Waitstaff is super attentive and it definitely gives off a fine dining feel as they encourage you to order in a course kind of way. The sushi is just perfectly fine. It's a bit pricey and for the most part it's just standard. I guess it's the premium for being Downtown. They do have a few inventive rolls and all of the fish definitely tasted fresh. We had a larger group on a Saturday and we needed to wait nearly 2 hours for our sushi. The upstairs was busy at the time but for the past half hour it's been empty in the upstairs and downstairs. We continually asked about our orders and were told they were "on their way". 30 more minutes. Still no mains other than the cooked food. The poor server was also our bartender and none of this was his fault. If something was going to be this late we would've appreciated not being mislead. Came to Goma for a special occasion and had mixed feelings. My boyfriend and I had previously gone to Ginko and regretted not getting the omakase, so we made sure to order Goma's version of it, the Gomakase. First, I got one of their cocktails, which had the consistency of cough syrup and tasted strongly of liquor. Most of their cocktails were made with cheap liquor (think Bacardi) which turned me off, especially for an upscale restaurant. The Gomakase undoubtedly had great quality ingredients; some of the darker pieces were absolutely delicious. We LOVED the eel and the fatty tuna. However, the rice on every piece was undercooked and a little crunchy, and I feel that poorly cooked rice is a deadly sin in Asian cuisine. It definitely texturally detracted from the experience. Overall, I feel that Goma is more geared towards an opulent tourist population rather than trying to stick to Japanese authenticity. Our first review was a 5. And let me say, if we hadn't gone a year ago, this might habe been a 5. But it just wasnt as good. Service was lovely but still not the a++++ oir first server was. This didnt feel like *our server* but an organization issue. Does that make sense? He was great! But just missed some things. We were decision shy. So just went with the omakase or whatever they call it. Definitely got some things I wouldn't order. Like eel. Ewwww I never order eel. Ive tried so many times and gave us years ago. This was a unique experience. I don't normally like to go downtown due to parking being 30-60$ at night but we were celebrating a birthday and I made sure that they knew that upon reservations and to reserve a booth. Went at opening, had to wait for a table despite having reservations and it wasn't a booth which I was told were for bigger parties. Drink order was taken, was sort of waiting for her to usher in birthday celebrations to us but that never happened and the drinks didn't come until the food came. Normally we like to relax to drinks not eat with them. Food was relatively on point. We ordered spicy chip appetizers, Toro Steak Oishi, Goma Roll and the tempura brownie. Oishi was phenomenal. Flavors were spot on. However we ordered the brownie (because we figured out they don't celebrate birthdays maybe) and it came out with a caramel chocolate dip that burned...the birthday girls mouth to the point where she had troubles eating for a few days. We didn't finish and the waitress offered to get us the caramel in our take home box but it was so hardened at that point that they apologized and offered more. The atmosphere was great. Lighting was exquisite. Professional lunches or early dinners are probably best here. Romantic or celebratory small party dinners I'd avoid. Go to Hyde Park, Prohibition, Marble Room etc... as they aleays made her the center of the room and celebrated with her when we go out for her birthday previously. The food that I ordered: - Tamago nigiri: it had the right amount of sweetness and umami flavor - Seared scallop and pork belly nigiri: it had good flavors, aside from the wasabi that overwhelmed everything else - Yakisoba: good amount of shrimp and pork belly, and they let me sub bok choy for the Napa cabbage. It had good flavor, but was too salty and saucy. I prefer the drier style. I also tried some food my family ordered: - Shabu shabu: the broth had a good subtle bonito flake flavor. Sesame dipping sauce had a very rich, deep sesame flavor. We got certified angus beef (no cut specified, but it was melt-in-your-mouth tender despite not having much marbling at all. We asked for a side of rice and they didn't charge for it, which was nice. The heating element at our table took forever to boil the broth, though. - Duck: it was cooked perfectly, very flavorful and tender. Ambiance is lively with a lot people coming to dinner and some heading to the lounge downstairs. That being said, it is a great spot to go to after a Cav's game. I recently visited Goma to celebrate my sister's birthday, and while I had a nice time, I must admit that I'm not the biggest sushi enthusiast. I can't give a full review of the food since I only tried one crab Rangoon, but I will mention that the sauce had a very strong, vinegary taste. It wasn't quite to my liking, but I understand it may appeal to others. As for the rest of the group, everyone seemed to really enjoy their meals, and it was clear that the food was well-prepared. The restaurant itself had a beautiful ambiance, with an impressive setup where the chefs were cutting fish and preparing sushi right in the center of the dining area. It added an interactive touch to the experience. The food and drinks came out quickly but if you're going here to celebrate I will note that there was nothing special done for birthdays. I was lucky to snag a table on a Friday night without reservations. It happened to be a night with no baseball or basketball games because downtown can get a bit busy and this is in prime location! My partner and I sat got front row seats at the sushi bar, which added to the wonderful dining experience. We ordered from the Gomakase menu and got the sashimi tasting and goma nigiri. The sashimi was super fresh. The selection was excellent and I loved the salmon, tuna, and amberjack. The nigiri was also a good variety to complement the sashimi. Gave Goma a second chance after not being a fan the best time and was sadly disappointed yet again. Brought my godmother who was in town from LA. First we ordered drinks (she got hot sake, I got a dirty martini with wasabi goat cheese olives). The goat cheese were waaaay to goat cheese forward and just didn't vibe well with the vodka. Ordered the two new apps that were mentioned (tuna crispy rice cakes and some sashimi plate). Tuna crispy rice didn't taste super fresh, the sashimi plate was okay, I enjoyed the sauce paired with the toppings. For our dinners, we ordered rice with vegetables and chicken (barely any chicken lol), wagyu beef nigiri (steak was so chewy I almost had to spit it out, I mean so bad the table next to us was about to order it and we encouraged them to not waste $20 on it), and spicy tuna roll (probably one of the better things I got throughout the night - however I ordered it with avocado and they forgot so had to send it back). However, the Shabi shabu was such a huge disappointment. It came out in a pot with just water, once it's boiling it's expected to add the veggies (which consist of just carrot slices and baby boy Choy and a bit of napa cabbage) and beef slides. The broth had No seasoning whatsoever. There's dipping sauce on the side but it's tasted just like soy sauce and sesame paste. It was a huge disappointment. Let me preface this review by saying I'm a huge sushi fan. I've eaten my way through traditional nigiri, experimented with wacky fusion rolls, and even braved the occasional blowfish (gulp!). So, when I discovered Goma via Yelp, a Japanese fusion concept by the acclaimed Chef Dante Boccuzzi, i had to try. The Ambiance is sleek and sophisticated. Think dim lighting, plush booths, and a bar stocked with enticing Asian-inspired cocktails. The vibe is definitely date night or special occasion material. I found the wait staff to be attentive and helpful. The sushi chef are to rock stars here. I sat at the sushi bar and asked if I could eat Omakase style. I could see a smile of joy take over the sushi chef behind the bar. What followed is a stream of eye catching presentation of mini masterpieces of delectable creations. See the attached pictures. These are not all on the menu since Omakase style is leaving it up to the chef. Goma definitely thrilled me beyond the moon with my first visit. If you are a courageous sushi fan with discriminating taste bud, you can't go wrong doing Omakase style dining at Goma. Goma is an experience, not just a meal. Goma roll: I was about to order the Zen roll as many of previous yelpers recommended, but Goma had more of what I wanted. No rice in the roll but fresh and quality ingredients. Did not see saba (mackerel) on the menu but when I asked sushi chefs they were like oh yeah we have that- yay. Verrrrry generous portion. Did not have as much of that salty brine like in other sushi establishments. So good ordered two more Gomakase: tasted as exquisite as it looked. Sushi chefs explained which ones to not add soy sauce with and to start from left to right. That was an epic tip because the eel finisher was nice decadent finale. Sadly they ran out of uni and beef tenderloin which we wanted to try, but based on our experience, will definitely be back. This has happened at every single sushi restaurant in Cleveland--uni not being available. Well, so Goma did have enough for ONE roll, lol. I took it. It was ONE piece of sushi and it cost $14. WTF. The uni itself was excellent but the seaweed wrapper was too hard and thick. The rice wasn't as soft and cooked as I was expecting. Ordered a soft shell crab roll that was too sour and citrusy with the crab not being as crunchy as I would've liked. The presentation for the food was only meh. My date ordered a basic tuna and salmon roll and it looked small. The coloring was off; like someone turned down the saturation levels...I was NOT impressed. It was a really hot day and even though we were inside, they had their entire wall opened up and it was so humid. Goma by Dante opened on July 1st 2021 and has been doing great in its first couple of weeks in the old Chinato space on the corner of E. 4th St and Prospect Ave. Be sure to get a reservation as this place is still New and Hot! Last logistical tip, you can park in the valet option for E. 4th, instead of a surface lot or street parking nearby that usually have parking restrictions, for very cheap. After you've parked and walked over, you'll walk through large glass doors into a great space with good decor filled with blown glass lighting and modern blue and black furniture to make you feel like your in the ocean. Loved the layout of the restaurant and the outdoor seating options if you wanted to enjoy some fresh air. My friends and I went for dinner here. We tried the calamari and mussels appetizers, along with some edamame. We ate them so quickly I didn't snap a pic. The calamari are tasty and served with shitake mushrooms and spicy mayo but unfortunately didn't have any tentacle pieces, if you like those! The mussels were seasoned well and served with crumbled crab on top! Edamame was solid, as to be expected, served warm with flaky salt. The other appetizers looked good too so I'll have to come back to try those. For entree, we tried a combination of sushi offerings. My favorites were the tobiko gunkan and the California hand roll. You can taste the freshness in the ingredients and everything is prepared nicely for a no-mess dinner. I'd say, think Ginko but with a more modern and expansive menu. If you like Ginko, you'll love Goma and you'll have more nightlife around you to explore after dinner! Outside of food, the drink menu holds its own. They offer cocktails, beers, wine and sake. I had the Neon Dove which was perfectly balanced with firery mezcal and fresh fruit. The cocktails at the table looked amazing but were also consumed too fast for a photo! So be expect to wait a little when you come. For drinks we got the whiskey king which is legit. The mule is not too sweet with strawberry syrup. The look can be better. Food here is okay. Sushi rolls size are decent. King crab rolls has lots of king crab pieces inside. We also got the pork belly salmon belly rolls. Pork belly is a bit tiny hidden in the big piece of rice. The salmon belly is not as fresh as I hope. Lobster roll lobster is not really fresh also. More like on the frozen side. Udon was good. Big portion. Can't go wrong. The special items of the night such as the toro tartare was approved by my colleague. For dessert we got the tempura brownie. My husband didn't see any specifications on a booth so we asked upon arrival and they told us the booths were for parties of 4 or more or people with special reservations and that they were all reserved. She then sat us at a two person table top where we ate . We were there for an hour and a half while all but one of the booths stayed empty and untouched.
