Molly is amazing! Been seeing her since 2012, as well as other family members. My hair is notoriously thick and easy to cut wrong. Other hairstylists before her would cut my hair in ways that would make it flip up in weird places a few days later. When I first saw Molly, she was real with me--"if I cut your hair like this, you're gonna get The Rachel" (SO true). She knows how my hair will respond to a cut like nobody else. Molly has been in charge of my hair for twenty years, since I moved into the neighborhood and walked in one day in 2006. Her salon is everything I want-great people (her BFF Josh works there and is clearly adored as well), warm welcoming energy, and a parade of family, friends, and neighborhood people constantly dropping in to hang for a while. All with great style and zero pretense. I no longer live in the neighborhood, but I truly love going there and have no plans to go elsewhere. She's just that good. I should mention that I don't own a hair dryer because I somehow never learned to use one, so the fact that I have great hair is testament to her wizardry. I've done pixie cuts, long layers, a million colors, and everything in between. I feel like a badass every time I leave Goo. I trust her implicitly and rarely have input beyond "I need it off my face" because I work in medicine. Molly is at her best when you let her run free. She cut my hair today during a terrible migraine. I literally sat down, closed my eyes, and when I opened them she'd cut off six inches and it was 100% the right call. She fully understands how haircuts can mark changes in our lives and is completely invested in honoring that if you want that from her. She never lets me leave until my hair is to her perfect vision. My roots got long in the pandemic and I went in during a brief opening to deal with them. She took one look and refused to dye them, basically saying "you're going to love this, so suck it up and grow it out." I get stopped almost daily since then for my silver Furiosa waves. She's done my makeup for events. You can bring in your outfit and she'll go to town. You will look sensational. And her excitement and anticipation make it all the more fun. Molly cares deeply for people and treats you like family. I think some of her magic is that she sees her clients the way we'd like to see ourselves and then makes our hair match that vision. She has never given me a haircut I couldn't easily maintain myself, or one that didn't grow out well. I could pay triple (and have) and not get anything that even comes close. Her prices are beyond fair and she is worth so much more. I'll stop here because I look like a groupie, though that doesn't bother me. When I was in my early 20s my hair got butchered at ULTA. I came in and Molly was extremely cool, she helped me come up with styles I could do my hair in while I grew it out- she did this entirely on her own time, and free of charge. Never did I ever get a bad cut from her- she evened out the chunkiest of layers in my hair and made them sleek and manageable. She was always cool to me. Originally, Josh fixed a Neapolitan-looking disaster on what was supposed to be natural red hair. Admittedly, he made my hair a little more ruby red than was natural, but all the better to fade. He did a great job on my red maybe 3 times, and was always very likable, and easy to get along with. The thing is I'm 30 now, and I don't feel shame anymore about leaving this honest review. Josh bullied me out of leaving an honest review years ago when he eventually turned my red hair brown. He insisted with me that it wasn't brown- I'm sad I no longer have the pictures, this was back in 2017- but he texted me immediately after I left an honest review explaining what happened with pictures- to let me know his friend saw my review and alerted him immediately. He wasn't aggressive but he made me feel uncomfortable enough to take it down, which just wasn't right, because that was twice he gaslit me- once for saying he didn't make my hair brown, when he did, and twice for convincing me that my honest review was somehow incorrect. Being likable might get a 20-something to remove an honest review about you, but I'm older now, and I never felt right about removing something that could have helped someone else all those years ago, just because I was uncomfortable with being confronted about the bad service I'd be given. The prices were always steep, and the salon atmosphere honestly always felt very gossipy. But I could have handled all that if my hair wasn't eventually turned brown against my will and then was refused to be fixed. I'm giving it two stars because Molly was always cool to me, and I appreciated her realness and care for the customer. Still. Redheads beware. Not a place for a copper top. read more

I am in lovvvvvvvvvvvvvve with my hair. My hair magician is @AllieCatColor. She is a hair Goddess! I have very fine curly hair and have always dreamed of having some color in my life. In the past, stylist have always over processed my curls leaving the ends to the mids straight and limp like my ex. That has caused me not to allow anyone to touch my hair as I grow it out from a buzz cut. I expressed to Allie exactly what I wanted. I wanted to have the mid to my ends bleached and have purple applied to that. Additionally, I told her I did not want to have to use a hot tool to make my naturally curly hair curly. I was that annoying client with very specific wants and needs that nobody wants to deal with. Allie never once made me feel bad about my request. She always responded in a calm and reaffirming tone. She never made me feel like the Karen I secretly hide. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ squad I am always reluctant about entering a new space. I felt welcomed and loved by Allie and the whole team the moment I stepped into the salon. Allie treated me better than I could have expected. My color is beautiful. My hair is still soft and curly! I am soooo glad that Janaan Simon has joined the team here. I've been going to her for about a half a year now and noone else in this town can do platinum blonde or color correction like her. Janaan rocks. Seriously she is one of the best stylists I have ever had touch my hair. Being from NYC, I'm extremely particular and haven't been able to find a stylist I'd go back to more than once since I moved to LA 7 years ago. That is, until I met her. And to top it off, she's a New Yorker too! Fate! When I first met Janaan, I came in needing not just color correction from years of highlights and regrowth, but I wanted to change up my look entirely. After a breakup, we all need to shake things up and feel refreshed and that is exactly what I was not only looking for but found. Janaan was so cool, she took my crazy hair state in without completely freaking out about my request to go platinum blonde and quickly devised a plan to make it happen. The transformation took 10hrs over 2 days, but she was a total trooper. She's an awesome person to talk to and made what could have been a completely grueling process fun and enjoyable. Not only that, but she protected the integrity of my hair. Anyone who's ever gone platinum knows that your hair can easily be damaged by the chemicals. But, Janaan is so skilled in what she does that not only did my hair not get fried, but it's shiny, silky, and healthier looking than it has been in years. This review is for Janaan! I met her outside the hair salon, and when I found out she was a colorist, I begged her for help. It was a tall order- I had a photoshoot scheduled the day after our appointment, and my hair was a box-dye disaster. She took the time before our appointment to make sure she knew exactly what I was looking for, and came up with a game-plan to execute. I had solid dyed auburn hair with dark blonde roots, and wanted her to take it to a natural copper red that would blend in with my existing roots so I could go longer between visits to the salon. Day of, she was ready to rock as soon as I showed up, and took the time to do it right. Full bayalage, then a copper rinse, finishing it off with a perfect trim. She gave me strict but kind orders to use color protective shampoo. It's been a little over a month, and it has settled into pretty much exactly what I was looking for- a redder version of my natural color. She's super professional, the salon itself is totally comfortable, and the gal knows her hair. Best service for the price I've found in Los Angeles :-) read more

By the time I was done with my conversation with Molly (the Owner), I was already smitten. I had an appointment and was really hoping for a client-hair stylist connection. Not only did she call me a few times to see if she could squeeze me in earlier (per my request), but when I got there for my first appointment, I was greeted with all smiles and a big hug. The salon is quirky and adorable with two mega-sized purple chandeliers. Amazing! And Miss Goo, herself, listened and explored possibilities with me. The end result was superb. I inevitably leave one of the cheapy chain salons somewhat numb. The haircut is fine, but never amazing. I need a few days to figure it out. But at Goo, oh man! The cut. The color. The highlights. I was so excited to go to Goo, after waiting the necessary 2 months for my hair to grow long enough to get the style that i want. I made my appointment, and everything seemed okay. I didn't think the girl on the phone took down my number properly even though she insisted twice that he "had it." But i didn't think much of it... until.... I show up after spending 40 minutes looking for parking and walking 6 blocks to Goo, only to find out when i get in that they have canceled my appointment because their hairstylist had an emergency. Did I want to reschedule? Not really. Not after learning how scarce parking is. And why didn't they call? When I asked why not, the girl became very defensive and said they had been trying to call "all day" but that i had given them the wrong number, in a tone of voice that suggested they could not possibly be held responsible for not calling. She sounded like the same girl I talked to one the phone, who wouldn't confirm with me that she had written down the right number. Interesting. Okay, I understand emergencies happen and that when they do, others get inconvenienced. But I lost half the afternoon because of this, didn't get my haircut, and got insulted on top of it to boot, by someone who suggested it was somehow my responsibility my afternoon was lost... because I didn't know my own telephone number. Rather than being so quick to deny responsibility -- who cares, anyway, who is to "blame" -- the girl should have been thinking about the inconvenience it caused me to come all the way down there and make it clear that my next appointment would NOT be the same, that they were sorry there was a miscommunication, etc etc. read more

I just moved to LA about a month ago and as of a few days ago was about three weeks late for a haircut. I mean, I had enough hair that if I rode a bike, I didn't need a helmet. So of course, being future Yelp Elite, I yelp that 'ish. What I came up with, based on reviews, was Salon Goo. Getting very healthy reviews from everyone, I figured it was a good spot to try. I always trust in Yelp y'eard! Well, I got my haircut. Unfortunately, it was more of a chop. I have no idea how it's going to grow out, but it's basically what I had before but all uneven. I've got hella long hair in some places and short ones in others. It looks cool, but I felt like a dog when its owner takes clippers to its fur because it's a hot summer day. Now, Josh is cool. He's a neighborhood guy and is pretty funny. He also looks like he knows what he's doing. I mean, he did say, "Let's just 'F' it up!" And it does look good. I have three main issues: 1. It cost $65 for like 15 minutes of work. Girls are only $10 more at $75. But everyone knows a woman's hair is substantially more work. Getting paid $65 for cutting off random strands seems a bit high. 2. His scissors were not very sharp. They kind of pulled out my hair rather than cutting it. 3. I have the sinking feeling this haircut is going to grow out funky. I mean, it looks good now, but a true test of a cut is how it looks a month later. Anyway, I'm sure he's very good at cutting women's hair and everyone was very nice. And he definitely knew his way around a set of sheers. But 15 minutes for $65, it just isn't justifiable... But it's my fault, not Yelp's. I should've realized that it was nearly all women that review Salon Goo. read more

I'm the type of customer that walks in, sets a couple of loose guidelines, and lets her hairdresser do whatever. What I look for in a hairstylist is a good eye and a strong opinion. Molly is my perfect match. The first time I came in, I wanted bangs for the first time in my life. I was worried they weren't for my face. Molly cut me a heavy bang and worked with my fickle, frizzy, curly hair. An hour later, my head was held high and I was floating down Fairfax. Molly hooked it up a second time, too, for a badly-needed trim. Goo is warm and stylish at the same time. Everyone who works and gets their hair done there are really cool, so it's a great energy to be in for the hour you're bound to a chair. So I went back last weekend for a follow-up cut/trim and got another awesome, fun and funky look. Jahmai is the best braider ever. I came in to get the 2 braid special. No one else does it better. Too many times there's a huge knot of hair at the top when other people try to do it. Years ago a friend introduced me to Josh and I've been going there ever since. Josh is rad guy, super friendly and most importantly he always does a great job. It's kinda pricy for a guys haircut but Josh does a great job. The vibe is always mellow and Josh cracks me up. I highly recommend him. He will give you a unique haircut that fits almost any style. He's an artist at what he does, and really knows how to find the best color and look for you. I have a very busy work schedule, but Josh is always able to squeeze me into a Saturday appointment. I started seeing Tonya for brows ~ 4 years ago at a different salon. She always did a great job, but like the masses in Los Angeles I was pulled away by a bigger name (you know - I already reviewed her). Eventually I saw to error of my ways and found Tonya again. Now that I have something to compare to WOW! Tonya is an artist with the brows. I always leave with movie start brows. As important, Tonya is NICE and EARNEST. Sure she does celebrities brows, but she is still nice to common folk like myself. In fact after a 2 year hiatus - she remembered me. Tonya is awesome. The only downside I see is parking is scarce, but that comes with the territory. read more

Harriet is the BEST !! I started going to her about three months ago on referral from two friends that already saw her and said that not only is she talented, quick and insanely well priced, but she's just the best and friendliest. My hair is ridiculously thick and has therefore both been next to impossible for me to dye on my own and has been equally annoying to go to salons to have them either mess up the color or just charge a fortune and keep me in "the chair" for 5+ hours aka my nightmare. With Harriet I'm always done in under 2.5 hours somehow with cut, color and a perfect blowout. Sometimes I actually jealously watch her arms while she moves quickly and perfectly through my blowout and I think "damn maybe i need to be a hairdresser to get perfect arms like her". Other pluses: street parking is pretty easy, cute pastel interior and canters is like 100 feet away so stock up on pastries before your appt or regret it foreverrrrr read more

The rating I gave Josh is the average of the two times I went there. Let me start with the good: The first time I went there, it was 5 star service. Hell, 6, if I could be so rash with yelp stars. He asked if he could highlight my hair a particular shade of red, and when he saw the hesitation on my face, he said "Don't worry! I'm not going to fuck it up!" and I went with my gut. He gave me an amazing cut and color, it looked fab for about 4 weeks, until the damn red got kinda brown. I still got compliments on my hair long after (I thought) my color had faded. Now the bad: The second time I saw him, I couldn't wait to go!! I was all excited!! I don't know if he felt like I couldn't keep up my highlights (I'm not the best at it, but come on, I don't think I deserved THIS). He colored my hair almost entirely really dark with tiny streaks of brown. I asked for highlights and I paid $160+ for something I think I could have managed to do at home. I guess he's some sort of a genius who you have to catch in a certain frame of mind, and then his haircuts are works of art. If not, you're going to get mediocre work that you overpay for. PS: If you DO go there, Don't get your eyebrows done. The pretentious lady who does it will rob you of $45 + tip and will do a below average job. I ended up coming back home and plucking strays out. PPS: Also, if you go there, park in the private lot in front of the bank, they threaten to tow, but haven't done so to me, and I've left it there on a weekday for 4 hours. read more
