My nightmare started when I hired a "contractor" through TaskRabbit with 600+ five-star reviews to fix and paint a peeling bathroom window along with some regrout touch-ups. Straightforward, right? Well, on Day 2 at 6pm on a Thursday, less than 72 hours before my guest's early Sunday arrival, he scurried away mid-job and left the window's wood and metal frame in worse condition than when he started. He used a chemical paint remover that compromised the surface, then left when things got complicated. No referral. Just a "sorry" and out the door. Now I had less time, a worse problem, and no clear path forward. Enter NYC Grout Pros. Elizabeth initially told me they were booked until Monday, which I understood, but once she heard my timeline, she led with empathy and assured me she and Daniel would make Friday work. It felt like a miracle! I went to sleep knowing I wasn't alone. Friday, Daniel arrives around 2:30pm, and what struck me immediately was how supported he was by his team. I was dealing with someone else's poor judgment. And Daniel kept reassuring me: he was on my side, he wouldn't abandon the project, and he would get it done. Although I was a complete stranger--one of millions of people in NYC--he treated me like a longtime friend he was willing to move mountains for. And boy did he. He never made me feel like a burden or like he'd been stuck with a bad job. There was also a generosity of spirit that permeated his work. My partner had ?'s about installing new flushmounts, and Daniel took the time to coach him through an example so we'd feel confident doing it ourselves. One micro-moment spoke volumes. After hours of driving and working late, he still cleaned thoroughly--bathroom spotless, tools neatly placed. As we walked out, he noticed dust from his boots in the hallway and instinctively dropped down to clean it, saying he didn't want to leave the building that way. That level of care--at the very end of a long day--is not something you can fake. I also appreciated how highly he spoke of his team, especially Elizabeth. I needed to get the hinges replaced on a noisy inside door of my house (the joys of being a new homeowner), and I got several responses from contractors across Yelp. Andrei's stood out both because it was the lowest price quote, and he had the best reviews of any other respondent. It seemed a little too good to be true, but I figured it was worth taking a chance. I'm glad I did, because Andrei IS too good to be true, and yet he exists. Excellent communication, punctual, thorough and completely self-sufficient, the hinge replacement process started off great. Then, after expertly replacing the hinges, and even sanding a bit at the base of the door where it caused the door to stick when opening and closing, he checked to see how the door opened and closed - the door was now blissfully quiet, but still stuck, and he identified the door latch and plate as needing to be adjusted. Above and beyond! The door works perfectly now, it's literally like a new door. And because the door was to my mother-in-law's bedroom, having Andrei provide this superlative service scored me a few points with her (well, at least for a few hours, until she found something else to grumble about). My friend recommended Eugene, a master of this sought after skill. The work he did was precise and the results are excellent. He did more sealant near my kitchen faucet as well. Making the appointment was very easy and Eugene arrived right on time. He works alone and is so concentrated on the task. A few days later, the grout behind kitchen faucet cracked and he was back in a flash. He also took the time to check on the whole project. Also suggested a simple squeegee to use after showering to prevent soap build up. I have showed my neighbors his work and sent his credentials to our building management team and co-op board. As the other reviewers state, he really is a tile savant. The work effort and knowledge can't be beat. My cost was $1480, totally on point with other providers in our building who did poor work.
