Very local beer and wine, Tucson and Arizona based. Good selection and tasty beers. Small place, mainly booths and bar tables. I had a cream ale and (I've forgotten what the other one was, but it was local) and tasted the delicious fried pickle, homemade chips, and bacon. Very good. Two beers and a six fried pickles came out to about $19. The waitress said we needed to go to up to the bar for service but she did come visit us at our booth to take orders for food and drink and bring water. NIce place. I have to give this place 5 stars after being so consistently awesome for the past year. This is my favorite place on Congress and my only complaint remaining that they open late but whatever I love it all the same! I usually hit a place twice before I review, just to take novelty out of the equation. I went to Good Oak again last night and had a great time. The ambiance and music are just right to be able to relax, but without having the energy drop out of the room. I've met two wonderful bartenders so far. The one that served us last time was there, but she got off work as we arrived, so we got to meet a new one. She was great too, and explained what makes them special. We had a couple of beer presses, which is a genius idea, and they were quite tasty. I've heard a couple of complaints about price with this place, but after my second visit, I'm prepared to disregard them. I think people like to forget that you get what you pay for. Quality beers cost more. If you want to spend $3-4, you will be drinking Bud Light. Plus, I'm willing to pay a "quality tax" if I can have my beer served to me by a well-trained person that's friendly and knows their product. Overall, would recommend! read more

This is a tough place to review, because it depends entirely on your perspective. It really comes down to two things, the quality of the place, and the competition in the area. I wish I could give this place a higher rating, but I honestly can't. The quality of the place itself seems good overall. The location is great, they did some great things with the space they have, it's a fun place to go into, and the food and beer selections are great. The only down side I experienced was the service seemed a bit, well, disinterested in providing any service at all. Other than the service, the biggest problem with Good Oak Bar is the competition. Downtown Tucson is changing quickly over the last couple years, and just being a great place with a great product isn't all it takes. For example, it's called "Goad Oak BAR." So, if you go and don't think about the food, I couldn't help but be bothered by the fact that just about every beer was $7 or higher. Sure, they are "local" and focused on only Arizona products, but they wouldn't be the best choice to go out for a drink. Consider for a moment any of the competition. You walk a block over and go to Thunder Canyon Brewery you can get great Arizona beers for $3/pint. If you're with someone, and have more than one beer, that difference adds up extremely fast. 2 people having 2 beers each is at least $28 at Good Oak, and $12 for similar high quality beer nearby. And to be honest, if I felt the service was that much better, I might be able to partially rationalize it. But, the service isn't better. It's not just price, it's about competition. For the "go local" movement, I guess it's one of the best places around. But you have to be willing to pay at least double to get that "local's only" exclusivity here. The bottom line here to me is literally "the bottom line." Although this is a really nice place, based on the competitions pricing I can't give this place high marks, it seems unnecessarily expensive. read more

Pretty neat set-up they've got here! It's teeny tiny, so don't be disappointed if they don't have a seat for ya. The staff was very friendly and attentive, particularly with all the running around they were doing! Loved the beer and wine selection (Arizona Stronghold is one of my favorite American wineries), and the food selection was eclectic! I guess it shouldn't effect my star rating, but the food just seems overpriced to me! As many have noted, the decor is pretty great (backwards Tucson for the win!), and it's such an interesting change of pace from any other bar/restaurant on Congress. A tiny bar right next to the Rialto on Congress. Lovely feeling inside--think English alleyway pub. But the libations are decidedly American. Arizonan to be specific. And this is what I love about this place--local beers and wines, rotated in selection, are the catch of the day. Expect to pay a bit more, but know that what you get will be high in quality. Food options are plentiful--they're attached to Diablo Burger. But get some fried pickles. Yum! Service around the 5pm hour is wonderful. This bar features Arizona wines & beers. How cool is that! Close to the Realto and is a pretty cool place as far as location, decor and ambiance. Service was excellent and drinks as good as any. Beer press?? Beer press!!! I love this idea!! Why have I never seen this before?! The bar tender added some lemon, cardamom and some other spices to a wheat beer then let it sit. This is one of my favorite bars in Downtown Tucson, love this place. I like to come in every now and then after work, and a sudden feeling of " calm and collect" comes over me every time I walk through that almost unnoticeable door ( The place is kinda hidden, and that's what makes is so top notch, cherry on top!). Every visit is better than the last. I love the emphasis on local product- from beer to wine and even coffee. Even better? They mix it up and create legit sangria's with beer AND wine and how about the beer press? It's damn delicious. The Arizona focus has really stolen my heart here. But that's not the only detail that warrants a near perfect rating (I'd give 4.5 stars if I could). The charming and approachable staff add to the picture here. I'd be remiss if I didn't mention their fried pickles. They're damn delicious- a close runner up to Trident's pickles. I'm a fan of the giant wooden booths. You can comfortably fit six people and not feel like your crowded by the rest of the bar. It's intimate and as Saba B points out "encourage conversation."Why not five stars? It would help if they had extra staff to cover the tables. We've never received table service and it seems to slow down the bar. Does it exist? Having to get up and order at the bar every time feels disruptive. Like I said, every visit is better than the last, so a little more personalized service would bump this one of to a five. read more

The Good Oak is a comfortable respite from the frenetic mayhem that has become the triad of World of Beers, Congress, and Playground. The clientele, thankfully leaning more toward geek than freak, are craft beer fans who like a pub feel. IPAs abound, including a coffee blend and Nimbus. The tall, deep booths encourage conversation. A downtown bar where the staff has restrained themselves from tweaking the decibels beyond tolerance is a sparkling little gem. This place gets better and better for me! The old english vibe of the dark wood and tall bench booths just invites me to come in and stay awhile. And why wouldnt I when they have so many great beers on tap! This last visit, I tried a few different ones, with my favorite being the Porter and Chai concoction, it was delicious! I also tried the IPA and Coffee french press which never disappoints, though I think the server could have filled the press with a tiny bit more beer. Then I finished my night with a pumpkin porter which had the perfect balance of pumpkin and beer, yum! I also tried the fried pickles for the first time and the dipping sauce should be served with everything on the menu, it was THAT good! Another fun fact, did you know they have a photo booth inside! I was one of the first customers to come through the door on their opening night and I was greeted by all the staff. They were super energetic, friendly and helpful. My first impression was of the giant bar and the big mural of TUCSON spelt backwards on the wall, which I loved. If you look into the mirrors above the bar, it spells Tucson correctly for you, which was a cool design idea. The first night they weren't serving their beer cocktails yet, so I plan to head back in the next week to try those out. They did have local beers and wine on tap, I had a Papago Orange Blossom - one of my favorites, and my boyfriend had the Borderlands Citrana. After about an hour or so of quiet chat at the bar, the staff turned the lights down and music up. It became much more of a comfortable bar scene. Two fellow Yelpers Jide F. and Victoria G. joined us for some drinks and we ordered the Shepards pie and some fried pickles to share. OH MY the fried pickles were AMAZING. They are coated with panko crumbs, and something a little spicy which makes them out of this world. And, the best part about the opening night, the food was free! I haven't been to Diablo Burger yet, but after sampling the food at the opening night of Good Oak Bar, I definitely plan to check it out. I'm happy Good Oak Bar is a new addition to downtown, it will be a great place to grab a drink before or after a show at the Rialto, or a nice place to watch a game. read more

This place is right next to Rialto theater, very small bar I mean if you blink your eyes you will miss it. It was a really cool bar, the bartenders were friendly but not very attentive. I ordered the Good Oak Burger, the burger was heavenly. I tried a few of their craft beers. It is a little hard to read the chalkboard because the bar is dark inside. But overall a really cool place. I'm digging it. The bar is tucked away on Congress next to the Rialto, and honestly, if you're not looking for it, you probably won't find it. I'm okay with that, as it gives the bar a bit more of a speakeasy vibe. The beer and wine are local, and it seems that the offerings change pretty frequently. Last night, a few friends and I got dinner here, and although the menu doesn't seem vegetarian friendly, as soon as I asked, they surprised me with several options. I had the BLTA, swap the bacon for cheese. It was substantial, and they didn't skimp on the avocado, which I appreciate. I also tried a fried pickle, and boy, was it good.
