First time visiting the bar. Awesome drinks and great beers. Hands down the best gin & tonic I have ever tasted. It's nice when a bar gets a simple and traditional drink right. This bar is just the kind of place I love. Helpful bartenders, local wines/beers, interesting, never-before-seen concoctions and a chill atmosphere. We were there around 7 on a Saturday and the bar was full, but we snagged a spot at a booth. The coolest thing about this place is it's infused beer-tails using a french press. I had the bacon-jalapeno cream ale and it was a-maz-ing. Their 'Go Cone' (a wine cocktail served over shaved ice) with sauvignon blanc, prickly pear, basil and lemon was crazy good too. They change out their menu every so often so make sure to come down and check these out before they're gone. I have visited the Good Oak Bar twice now and each time was quite happy! I can't say anything about the food because frankly, I didn't realize they even served food until I was ready to leave. Drink time...I was quite impressed! The sangria (go cones) blew my mind. I don't usually order sangria because I am not a fan of sweet drinks. The ingredients were so intriguing that I just couldn't resist and had to ask about them. Strawberry, Rhubarb, mint, basil, cucumber, and honey (I may be missing one or two)... I was convinced into trying it out. The bartender promised it wouldn't be too sweet. She was right! This drink was not sweet at all and you could be sure that every ingredient was all natural. I was in love! I also tried the coffee press... not something I would get on a regular basis but it was pretty good and something new and fun to do! The ambiance was awesome. It seems like a little underground bar that not many know about but it is actually quite popping when you step inside. The bar was at least half full and every booth was taken each time I went in. What was great is that it didn't feel crowded and we were still taken care of very well! The owner happened to be in while we were grabbing a drink and he was really friendly. He stopped by the table, said hello and told us a little about this bar and his others in Tucson and Flagstaff. Before he was heading out he dropped back by just to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. You can't beat that... so we bopped on over to his other restaurant for dinner! I probably wouldn't make this spot one of my normal hang outs but it is a great place and I will be going back! A little pricey but still pretty good. You'll have more attentive staff if you sit at the bar, so do that unless you don't mind being walked pass often and getting a drink menu or asked if you need anything after 30 minutes. Man, sad to say because I really tried to like this place. It's quiet and has a relaxed vibe, I'll give it that. It always seemed a bit over priced and a bit full of itself personality wise with bar tenders who seem disinterested or aloof but I'm forgiving if a place has a cozy feel. However, when I order 2 pints of dragoon IPA and hand over a twenty and wait for change and am then informed that they were $10 a pint, that is the line, I'm done ! NO BEER should cost 10 bucks a pint - where the hell am I, Manhattan? I thought I was in Tucson? Also, I've been to Manhattan, many times, and never paid 10 bucks for a pint of even, really good, beer. A local bar, serving beer from a local brewery, to local customers can do better than this. Even though I work right around the corner, I finally had the chance to check out the Good Oak Bar w/some friends. I feel like we lucked out because we got there around 830ish on a Friday night and were able to snag one of the big wooden booths. I had the old fashioned and it was pretty good. Like others have written about, the attention to the local Arizona detail is what really sets this place apart. If most nights also have around the amount of people tonight did, I think it also really hits the spot since it wasn't crowded and was just a lovely hang. Recommend! read more

I love this place. I always sit at the bar when I go. I love that it is wedges between the Rialto and the Diablo Burger because that makes it more intimate and you have to "know about it". The cocktails and drinks are always interesting and offer it's own unique twist. I love watching the bar tender at work as they carefully concoct your beverage and are pleasant to speak with. It's definitely fun to admire the space as well with unique glasses and decor. The food is good and the atmosphere cozy. A true Tucson orig! I like this place. It has a lot of wonderful things going for it: 1. The first and perhaps most important thing for you to know is that they specialize in Arizona beers and wine only. 2. It is located in prime real estate in downtown Tucson, right in the heart of activity. 3. I like the concept and the feel of the space. It has wonderful ambiance. 4. The booth seating is spacious and so very comfortable. The downfalls? 1. I prize that this place is all about the Arizona beers and wines, but you won't find a Chardonnay on the menu. 2. The service is lacking. While they do offer waiter service at the tables, I twice had to go up to the bar to order -- and this wasn't even during rush hour business times. 3. The space is somewhat small, so it can get short on seating fairly quickly. But, really, the most frustrating thing of all was the service. I was actually pleased with my flight of wine and appreciated both the selection and the pours. Still, neither of the bartenders I spoke with were either patient or knowledgeable enough to listen to my interests and give me strong recommendations. For a place that specializes in beer and wine, that is a sore, sore mark. But, that aside, I still like the space and will likely visit again soon. From what I could tell, the bar tends to draw many small groups of people, three or four in a group. It is a great space for socializing; great for casual talks -- I imagine it is a great go to spot for a pre-dinner drink and after dinner conversation. I also imagine this would be a popular spot for people who are in town for business conferences. Just a sidenote: The bathroom is an interesting experience. You walk through a set of doors towards the back of the establishment and ed up in a space that opens up to this weird corridor that totally reminded me of a horror movie. The bathroom has an equally eerie feel to it. But it is so, so bright in there so there is likely little changes at all that the Hash Slinging Slasher will grab you while in there. read more

I live Good Oak because it represents a reprieve that characterizes living in the Sonoran Desert. Here's why Good Oak is my favorite Tucson bar: 1. Craft: I'm drawn to establishments that develop a craft identity, where the bartenders, for example, can tell me why and how certain flavors develop during fermentation. And where the local vineyards whose products are for sale actually come in for tastings. I'm drawn to Good Oak because the bartenders seem to know and care about what *I* like and they've never recommended something I didn't enjoy. Sometimes I don't feel like just a customer here, not because the staff are friendly, but because when I go into Good Oak I almost feel like I've escaped consumer culture--and that's a kind of reprieve you won't often find (the caveat, however, is that this isn't the cheapest joint in town). Maybe it's the novelty of their beer presses, or the almost hidden location, but this doesn't come together feeling like a bar in a busy downtown area. Maybe it's that it seems like Good Oak cares as much about the alcohol as it does about the customer. It's this atmosphere that makes it idiosyncratically cozy (really, Im just a sucker for the metal and the wood accents). 2. Discreet: Even though it's located downtown, it isn't swarming with Coors Light-soaked undergrads. In fact, it's almost hidden in plain sight. I like to come here with my colleagues for relief drinking after long days at work. It can get loud, but it's mostly pretty reasonable. 3. Arizona local: GO serves beer and wine sourced from Arizona. I love the wine selections, and though they're not necessarily cheap ($8-12/glass), they're *all* excellent, locally-sourced. On a recent visit, I started with the xo coffee stout and finished with a Dragoon IPA, which left me delightfully woozy. And while you can now find Dragoon brews in a number of establishments around Tucson, and the selection of swill isn't quite as wide as say, 1702, it's leas about the breadth of selection than the reason for it. Is this my favorite bar in Tucson? Probably. Nestled into busy Congress street, the place is an absolute gem. Cozy space, friendly bartenders, great drinks, and a killer food list. This is the kind of bar I like to hang at, especially if I'm lucky enough to snag one of the big booths. I could hide away in one of those for hours! The Happy Hour is a fantastic deal - featuring specials on local brews and tap wine, as well as $ off apps. I'm obsessed with the chips here - crispy, homemade, light. Addicting. This was a nice surprise bar on our first visit to Tucson. Recommended by a co-worker. Great happy hour prices. They offer food but we just had drinks. I was curious to know if the vegetarian burger was good...it sounded good! This seems like a hipster bar, based soley on the look of the bartenders. Handlebar mustaches and fitted pearl button shirts...I loved it. Their craft cocktails were great. Meticulously made with lots of tinctures, ingredients and love. The space is small but very cozy....and although seemed hipster, also very cozy. You Can't not love a local az wine and beer bar. That's all it was when I visited this bar a yr ago. I went in Saturday and I was blown away. They have a good selection of local beer and wine and now have some really good cocktails and a superb tequila and whiskey collection. Of course I tried a local dragoon red dipa and my lady had a mezcal sour and it was legit. It's so cool to come to a beer bar and also get a really good craft cocktail done right if you're in the mood for that. I have always loved the size and how intimate the place is but the staff is awesome, friendly and so cool to talk too. Also a big plus is the munchies they have . I'm a sucker for the pub plate which is potato chips bacon and the best fried pickles ( that's bar food right there) it's all so good, and perfect with a beer. Excellent atmosphere. This place just invites you to hang out and relax for awhile. Local craft beers showcased--love seeing that. They seemed to have a good selection in general, especially for a pretty small bar. The servers all seemed to be working pretty hard (e.g., taking care of things behind the bar whenever they weren't interacting with customers). My friend got a smoky negroni. It was super smoky--not really her thing--but I got a French 75 and loved it. Really delicious. And because it hasn't been said in a year, and is worth mentioning: Clean bathrooms! Multiple stalls! Not the easiest thing to find in the area, so was definitely appreciated on our end (make sure you stop before heading to another bar). read more

My favorite downtown bar - feels like a little neighborhood joint from Providence or Boston. Love that vibe. The old fashioneds are strong and on point, and they do whiskey flights for those who like to try out all kinds of whiskeys. I haven't been here when it was really busy, but each time had been a lot of fun. They have these amazing coffee beer press! It's pretty fun doing it yourself too. I also get the fried pickles most times because I like the fact that they use pickles spears rather than slices. Other than that all I have had are a couple misc beers. There's options for various tequilas and whiskeys both of which you can order a flight which I will try next time hopefully! I love it! We went there on their first night, last Wednesday, for their "soft opening." We went again for my husband's birthday two days later. I love how it looks in there, totally beautiful with great lighting. I also love the word "Tucson" painted backwards on the wall. They only had 3 wines on tap when we were there. I'm hoping they expand their offerings, but even if they don't at least they are choosing good wines to feature. I liked every one I tried. The beer selection is bigger. I'm not a huge beer fan but I like to sample my husband's beers. He got this Papago Brewing beer that seriously tasted like drinking a s'more. It was so good. Get that. The bartenders were really nice and one was even telling us the history of the space which was really cool. She also was telling us how they were getting more chairs in there which will be great because right now they just have a few tables (maybe 4?) so seating is really limited. What I like about this place: - Great overall decor and ambience. The booths and all the wood have a very warm and welcoming feel. - The location is great. A nice alternative to Congress or District (my usual haunts) that still feels adult and trendy. - The service is great. I have mostly always sat at the bar and been served by Cassidy (a staunch New Orleans Saints fan). She's so friendly with everyone but still manages to stay on top of delivering speedy service. - I love the focus on local everything.... Why the 3 stars then? I wish the overall selection for wine and food was greater. The beer selection seems great (but I'm not much of a beer drinker so I would not be the best judge) but the wine selection is pretty limited. I totally get the emphasis on local wines and wine by the tap, its just that if you don't care for the two or three wines they serve, you're sort of out of luck. For their food offerings, nothing stands out as particularly good or bad and the menu is a bit limited. So I'm not downgrading them for food, but neither can I call it a plus. read more

I like the local only beer and wine. It makes for some great selections and creativity. The "sangria" like mixes were good. And the IPA with coffee was surprisingly likable (I do not like IPA). The atmosphere is nice and the prices are decent. But they get three stars because I sat with an empty glass for almost 45 minutes. Not once did either of the bartenders ask if I wanted another drink. It wasn't that busy and they just seemed to have better things to do. I haven't been downtown for a while, but happened upon this place while waiting to eat at Proper. Glad we showed up early for our reservation! It is not very big, but big enough if you want to bring a small group (maybe 4-5). There is a decent sized bar and a few booths. Blues music was playing when I went. Basically a very cool, laid back atmosphere. There are a few local beers on tap, and they serve some apps (they share a kitchen with Diablo Burger). One thing that caught my eye, but that I didn't have a chance to try, was the infused beer. Basically a beer in a coffee press with some spices or other things which are allowed to steep in it before drinking. I can't wait to try it on my next visit!. Plus they have a photo booth! Aw yiss. This bar is great, seriously. I went with a friend expecting it to be a standard downtown joint, but was pleasantly surprised. It was pretty packed on a Tuesday night, with one bartender. She was great! She was handling it really well, having fun and very attentive and efficient. The selection of beer/wine were seemingly all from Arizona which was kind of cool. I had a really tasty zin, my friend an AZ hef. We ended up being there around 2 hours since we were enjoying ourselves so much, the noise level was good considering it was really busy and we enjoyed the old time-y music. Decided to try this new bar on a Thursday and enjoyed everything! There were just a few (~8) people when we arrived and we chose a booth. I wasn't sure if we would have a server but the bartender came around to take our drink orders. Like another reviewer said, they only have three wines on tap. It was a little hard to choose because the chalkboard menu didn't specify what type of wines the three were and you could choose between tap wine or wine from the bottle. We tried all three and the red was our favorite. We ordered food and I understand the menu might change frequently but I didn't enjoy asking what each item was all about. Maybe printing the menus on paper when they change? It wasn't a problem but the bartender was the only staff there and I didn't want to monopolize his time. Anyways, I had the Good Oak burger which was amazing. My friends had the BLTA which got rave reviews and the shepard's pie which was good but not fabulous. Named for perhaps the most likely origin for the word "Arizona," Good Oak Bar delivers what feels like a beverage spotlight on southwestern beer, wine, and spirits. Many different Tucson and Arizona drafts, even Arizona wines to try (we visited during rosé week to sample different Arizonan rosés), and of course margaritas. They also feature their own inventions if you're feeling adventurous takes on sangria or frozen wines. If you get hungry while you're there, get the chips and guac or the fried pickles. Or both. They're both delicious. I wouldn't have expected a bar to make such good quality guac but they delivered. Additionally, the bar itself and the rest of the interior are pretty stunning. They pull off the rustic look without feeling contrived or forced. It is a bit dark though so be prepared for that vibe. This is my favorite bar in Tucson. They only serve Arizona wine and beer, and the menus rotate often. The staff is very knowledgeable. They have "french pressed" beer, which is either pale ale or stout pressed with coffee or chai in a coffee french press. Too fricken cool. They also make homemade sangria from the wine on tap. They have a large bar and a handful of booths. The fried pickle spears are to die for. I have had a bite of the burger which was good too!
