I've been wanting to try Sonora Moonshine for a long time and finally made it here to start our Sunday Afternoon. All I had to say was that it's a tequila based bar and restaurant to my hubby and he told me to say no more and that he was all in. The vibe was great playing Los Apson and Los Bukis along with other Mexican music classics. I absolutely loved it. All of the cocktails we had were great, but I feel that they fell short on the tequila. I had Four cocktails and really didn't feel the spirits come upon me lol. No complaints on the food quality. It was very good. My husband's tacos were big but he finished both of them before my food came out. I told him to eat so that his food wouldn't get cold. I think they could use an extra bartender for the amount of people that were there on a Sunday. Overall, we would recommend supporting this local gem. read more

Parking sucks but there is a paid lot right next door entrance on 6th. The taco prices are each so beware. They rotate local beers which i love had the Horchata Cream Ale and it was great (better than it sounded). Great staff, small inside with about 6 tables and more outside. They focus on Sonoran style if cooking which i take as low and slow. Really a great little stop. You can write a postcard and they will mail it so I wrote one to myself. read more

Other than being unable to get into the speakeasy due to a private event... It was great. The drinks were delicious and the server made great recommendations based on preferences. I actually didn't even know they served food there and everything that got walked by our table looked delicious. This place is pretty great. We went to see a singer (Paul Opocensky) who we used to follow when he was the lead of a local band (Tongue Dried Sun) here in Tucson. My wife and I were visiting Sonora Moonshine for the first time, and I think we both found the venue to have a bit of a "hip" vibe; it definitely has a welcoming aura; and it is a really nice place to enjoy performers in an intimate atmosphere. Sometimes the stars align and an, "evening-get-away" turns out to be exceptional. So was it last night at Sonora Moonshine. The drinks here are very creative (see cocktail menu in photo below). And judging from the sips that I snagged from my wife's cocktail, the bar-keeps here know how to combine ingredients to make "drinks of the divine." (aka: Nectar of the Gods). *They serve their drinks in pretty, ceramic glasses--which are kinda cool--both literally and figuratively. For my first round of drinks, I opted for the Ruta del Agave which involves a flight that includes 2 shots of mezcal and 2 shots of Mexican moonshine--all from different areas of "Meh-he-coe" and the choices rotate monthly . Ladies, be warned... these drinks will put hair on your chest. I'm kidding. But These drinks are served in mini-ceramic shot glasses (see photo below) and although I enjoyed their smokiness, they do have a bit of a bite. A tasty bite, but I probably won't get this again. I like the idea of trying something unique, but on the next trip here, I really would like to sample the cocktails that are their main-attraction/ feature. (*One of their drinks has the essence of pine needles from Mount Lemmon, another has fermented honey...And cricket salt. I don't know what that is, but come on! Adventure awaits!) Although the bar is known for it's drinks there is a little known secret that we discovered last night. Kinda keep this to yourself if you would, as we are definitely going to return, but would rather not have to wait in a super long line to get in...The nachos here are "off the hook". (No kidding! They are really-really-really good...chock full of southwestern flavors, thick chips, smoked meats, and generous heaps of exotic cheeses). So, let's say you are a guy and you want to score some points with a special lady. Take her here and see if you can convince her to share an order of these amazing nachos. As she indulges in the dish, she is going to start to wonder if you might "be the one." And finally, most of all...don't take dating advice from me. It has been verified by science that I, "got no game."... No game at all. But the drinks and the ambiance and especially the nachos...they are all really good. A friend and I met up for some food here before heading downstairs to check out Prohibición, and we really enjoyed our sharables! The menu on weekdays is a bit on the small side, but we were still able to find several items that looked appealing. We got the Queso Fundido and Ceviche de Salmon, and both were delicious! The Queso Fundido has birria in it, which is fairly unique in Tucson (most places go with chorizo), and I absolutely adored it. It had an incredible pull on the cheese and the flavor was fantastic. The spicy richness of the queso was offset by the very light, citrus-forward acid of the ceviche, which was plated gorgeously. The restaurant was very very quiet on the weekday evening we were there, and the server checked in on us regularly without it feeling overbearing. Came here for mothers day in the afternoon and it was extremely slow hardly any people eating there, we started off with some drinks which took about 20 minutes to arrive, ordered our food which all came out separately not only that but the ribeye that I had ordered arrived cold. We ordered another round of drinks and we never got them, server seemed too busy talking and hugging with what seemed her boyfriend and gave him a beer while we waited for our drinks still, it wasn't busy at all and there was only a few workers but all seemed manageable for the people that was working there. Another semi-under-the-radar downtown gem! Ventured to Sonora Moonshine with 12-15 coworkers for a celebratory retirement HH for two colleagues. It's quaint with a couple of small 4-seaters and a half dozen 2-seaters (which we took over). By 5:15 on this Thursday there were fortunately only 3-4 others besides our group (one of the reasons we phoned ahead to coordinate our visit with SM). This is both a craft cocktail and craft appetizers joint. That is to say, creatively clever ingredients fused to make unique riffs on standards - and one-offs! The bites menu is simply delectable. My favs were the ricotta cheese dip with carne seca (underneath) served with thick toasted bread and the queso fundido, also with birria underneath. Both proved to be not just savory but substantive thanks to that little surprise layer of simmered beef and, as a result, well worth the $14-$16 each. The most popular drink on this 100° afternoon was the lemon fizzy, although their version of the espresso martini looked delicious. In terms of ambience, I don't know if this would be an ideal first date spot since the tables are close together and the venue is small. But for any other occasion - pre-show; after work; etc., it's now in my top-10! Parking will be a challenge since it's right on Broadway. I hate to admit it but they have the best tacos in Tucson... my baby loves the kid menu the agua de chile con camarones. They cut the grapes perfectly for a small child. I've came here twice, once in November and the other on Valentines Day. My boyfriend and I came in November, we raved about this place. We got the pork belly, aguachiles, and 2 other things that don't seem to be on the menu anymore. The pork belly and aguachiles were sooo fire, we couldn't get enough. You tell the bartenders what spirits and flavors you like, and they make a custom drink for you. Our drinks were really good and interesting. It was $50 after tax and tip, which seems expensive, but honestly you pay that much for two drinks off a menu anywhere else anyways, so I'd say it was worth it (also speaking as a college student lol). The vibe in there is also super cool too and there was live music (you can find the schedule on their site). When we came back recently, it didn't meet our expectations for some reason and was a disappointing, especially for the price. We got the pork belly again, which was still pretty good. I got the quesabirria and my boyfriend got some kind of tacos. They were underwhelming, which was surprising because our server the first time mentioned it's a fan favorite and insisted I get them the next time since they ran out that night. Wow what a great spot, I went for a Tucson Foodie member mixer. The food was amazing and the staff were friendly and helpful. We sampled their food, we had the pretzel with a nice mole sauce, a ceviche, queso fundido, and guacamole with carne seca, which was my favorite and will definitely go back for. There is a speakeasy where they build the drink based on what flavor profiles you would like. They ask you what spirit you prefer, then what notes you like I choose mezcal with citrus sweet and tart. The drink was amazing, they do take some time to make but so worth it. Love love love this concept, and will definitely be back. You will never get the same drink which I think is so fun. What makes Sonora Moonshine special to me is that after my first visit, I couldn't stop thinking about when I'd return. Very good, relatively upscale Mexican food. And better cocktails than most of downtown, all in one place! What I loved: Brilliant seafood options, but also some heartier dishes. The octopus and shrimp in salsa verde was outstanding, but the aguachile en salsa negra stole the show with its refreshing tartness. Their rendition of queso fundido is so rich, topped off with a generous heaping of juicy birria. They also serve one of the best pork belly dishes I've ever had! What I liked: Service is friendly and attentive, and the expansive patio is romantic to me. Cocktails are phenomenal and express a certain authenticity. Their take on the negroni, with an extra burst of floral flavors. Their take on a spicy margarita was perfection. I'll be back to try more, and I'll be back to visit their speakeasy, Prohibicion. I came here with a group last night. The 4 other people I asked, all found a cocktail they liked. I loved the La Sangre Fria. It is made with rum and somehow has a slight taste like bloody marys but not overpowering like a normal bloody mary. It is light and refreshing. I tried the Blackberry bacanora spritz again this time and again it was decent but not close to as good as the La Sangra Fria. The food was awesome. The tuna dish was fresh and really good. The Pulpo y Camaron a la Diabla was delicious and a little spicy. I didn't get a chance to see the downstairs speakeasy style bar yet. read more

After a hard week at work, I decided to treat myself a little and try out this new place. Brand new and in soft opening mode, they are still getting things down like the drinks but this place has much potential and great a location. The grand opening is tomorrow on Cinco de Mayo. Happy hour or Hora Feliz is from 2-5 pm and after 10 pm which is basically $2 off cocktails and beer. Parking is going to be street parking but there is a small public paid parking lot too. Service was good and the waitress checked on me often. The only super minor complaint I had was that she did not ask me if I would like water. I did eventually ask for it after checked up on me a few times. Like I said it was a very minor issue, but on a hot day in the desert, it would be a nice touch. I ended getting the La Sangre Fria which had a nice, tartness to it with a tamarind rum It's right across the street from my favorite brewery, Pueblo Vida. The inside is a mix of brick walls, granite like tile floors, wood square tables with rope and metal chairs and lively music playing on the stereo to get you in the mood and try to make the whole thing an experience for you to enjoy. There is a large outdoor patio area that offers some shade but I would recommend that for the evening. It looks like they have a movie screen too but I am not sure if that is going to be a regular thing. I would recommend if you are coming in the afternoon to just sit inside in the cool AC. The waitress was very attentive checking up on me several times but the only minor issue I could find, and it's really minor, is that I wasn't asked for water. After she checked on me a few times, I finally asked for water. I came in 10 min before happy hour and decided to just put on my food order and have the waitress put the drink order in at 2 pm. Super nice of her to do that for me. She even came back and told me she submitted it at 2 pm. I ordered the La Sangre Fria which was savory and tart with a tamarind salt rim. All their drinks sound very interesting. Definitely not your usual drinks. Prices are on par with what I expected for cocktails at a restaurant but the happy hour helps a little. Lots of good food choices too. I got the birria nachos which was served to me in a cast iron skillet and presented beautifully with toppings of three cheeses, jalapeños, sour cream, and of course birria. The portion size was ample and enough to share with another person. The restaurant also specializes in many selections of bacanora and mezcal if you want to try some out. I have to say, I knew nothing about this restaurant upon meeting my friend here & once glancing at the menu, was a little disturbed seeing the prices and hearing it was a tapas restaurant. But after my experience at the restaurant, I have to say, it was nothing short of great! From our server who helped me to find a drink when I didn't want alcohol (a guava-like lemonade the bar concocted), to the portions and presentation of the orders, to our time at the speakeasy after... everything was better than expected. We ordered the pretzel dish which was pretty large. We weren't big fans of the mole sauce that came with it, though I commend the kitchen for the uniqueness of the dish. If it came with a cheesy sauce as well, it would have made the dish a 10/10. I'd love to see another dish used with that mole sauce though! The pork belly was awesome and not at all as fatty as I'm used to and was expecting! The pulpo and camaron had nice flavor but has a kick so if you cannot handle spicy, it may not be for you. The salmon dish was also very fresh and yummy, though I didn't not realize it would be raw. I was curious to try a salmon ceviche and do wish that would have been communicated that it would not be cooked through. These portions are definitely enough to share and after all of this, an app my friend ordered before I got there, my drink and my friend's drink, I believe our bill was around $120. I would say the value is worth the price. And to top it all off, we learned they had a speakeasy downstairs you get in with instructions on a card. We came here after a small lunch and had the Aguachile to top off our day. The Aguachile was different from what we are used to in an Aguachile as it was with salsa negra, but nonetheless packed with flavor and delicious. We also aren't huge tequila/mezcal people but wanted to try some cocktails and this place can change your mind if you are like us. We had the La Niña Fresa and La Sangre Fria? to start and both cocktails are balanced perfectly and have flavors that are not typical in a cocktail. Last but not least we had the shrimp and octopus a la diabla I have to say the flavor on point I would love to give this dish a 10/10 but the octopus is very much over cooked. This new bar/restaurant combo didn't feel ready for its launch. Food and drink were solid, but came out at a slow pace. There was also a lot of mix ups in orders, but you can tell the staff were hustling and were very kind. I started at the speakeasy bar and waited 20 minutes for a drink. After five people who were seated after me got their drinks, the waiter circled back asking what I ordered. I repeated my order and waited another 20 minutes and still didn't get a drink so I went outside to be seated with some friends. I asked the waiter if they could bring it upstairs for me, and they said would. Outside I got the Pulpo y Camarones a la Diablo and a Last Resort Water. We got our drinks before we got water. I asked for water twice but never got any. The drink itself was solid and cutely presented. The one food item we split was also delicious and is something I would order again. In the end, I never received my drink from the downstairs bar. All in all, not sure if I would go back. Maybe when service becomes more streamlined. read more
