Simply put, Koen is outstanding! When I first reached out to Koen, we had recently adopted our puppy Oakley from the humane society. Although Oakley and our other dog Jojo got along fine, our house became chaos. Jojo's anxiety and reactivity became severe and Oakley needed to learn basic skills and commands. There is not a better, more honest trainer out there! He worked with my highly dog and animal aggressive dog, first we did a board and train to evaluate and re-educate the dog, now we are starting private lessons to include educating the humans. My dog is genetically programmed to be aggressive towards other animals, especially dogs. Koen was completely honest about her abilities and what I could realistically expect from her, unlike other places that promised have her "fixed" in 4 weeks. That's not how training works! She has made so much progress controlling her impulses, and we are learning together, with our trainer, how to strengthen what she learned and continue to improve. Let me start by saying that the negative reviews are pretty bulls**t and really tell what type of customers those people really are - the type of people that demand a cashier to honor a year old expired coupon or complain that they had to wait 15minutes for their order during rush time at a busy restaurant. Koen and Shelby (I'm so sorry if I misspelled it, ) are two of the most genuine people I have ever met. It was such a pleasure to meet them and I am so excited that they are working with my two rescues. The consultation was /well worth/ what my husband and I paid and the knowledge I gained from the short time I spent with them was worth more than its weight in gold. I met them downstairs with my 3 year old, Princess, and was nervous at first for their safety and for my baby's since she's very particular about people. The introduction was very slow and comfortable for all parties involved, though my baby basically puffed herself at them to appear scary when we approached them. Koen could tell pretty quick that she (Princess) was very food-motivated and just eased himself into meeting her by supplying treats from a distance. The good news? He immediately told me that Princess was not at all aggressive and territorial as we initially thought she was...She's just scared, with a touch of separation anxiety, and in her way is attempting to appear aggressive. We switched from the retractable leashed to the slip leash (which I absolutely promise to throw out this weekend), walked around my apartment building; He watched her behavior pretty closely, and even took the leash to walk her himself. Turns out my oldest pup-child is used to being on my hip because she tired herself out fighting against the leash to try and come back to my side. Like a child being left at daycare for the very first time. Haha. We then came back into my apartment to look at Princess' behavior in her natural habitat...and with her sister, Daisy, our 1 year old Belgian Malenois, and her cat sister and brother, Mia and Mozart. That's when the knowledge REALLLLLY came out. Koen is so knowledge and absolutely understands dogs and their language. He started setting the expectations for what to expect before, during, and after training. He and his wife were genuine, amicable, and professional - it was like talking with friends, friends that talk about their most favorite pasttime and you are enthralled in it because it's so endearing. He was easy to understand and easy to talk to; Honestly, from the correspondence prior to the consultation, I felt that he was someone I could trust my fur baby (and soon, fur babies) with, but the consultation drove the point home. I know this sounds like a love letter to the Good Vibes K9 owners and...yeah, it sorta is...but genuine recognizes genuine and they are nothing short of such. If you're looking for a trainer(s), Koen and Shelby are amazing. They are locally owned, very reasonably priced, and the work they do is amazing. And this is something I can say without hesitation from just the consultation, alone. You CAN train old dogs new tricks! I signed up for Good Vibes K9's private lessons for my 12 year old Maltese who I rescued 9 years ago. I needed to learn how to walk my little Missy on leash instead of her walking me! She has always freaked out when she sees other dogs so I had not walked her much since we moved to our new neighborhood because there are a lot of dogs being walked. It is quite embarrassing how she acted. Koen helped both of us gain confidence. Missy has done really well!!! Koen is an amazing dog whisperer who speaks "little old dog" language just as well as "big dog"! Actually he has quite a big heart for little tiny ones! Koen picks up on little nuances of behavior from both the owner and the dog where he can help correct and guide the wanted behavior/response. I adopted Blanca 2 years ago not knowing how severe her reactivity was towards other dogs. It was like Jekyl and Hyde! At home she was a sweet, snuggly pup. As soon as we exited the house, she was a beast. Walks were unbareable. I would come home in tears feeling utterly defeated. I had worked with 7, yes 7, other trainers who offered a variety of training tools....clickers, food, both, compressed air, yelling BAH!, throwing sandwich bags filled with water in front of her, and one who told me to put her down. None of it worked. I was close to giving up, and saying 'she'll be an inside dog only.' But I knew that wasn't fair. On a late night search for a board and train, I came across Good Vibes K9. Here was a trainer who used different methods based on the dogs need, not some technique they were pushing. So I gave them a call. During my first conversation with Koen I knew he was different then other trainers. He spoke a language that made sense to me that didnt involve "be the alpha, or " be dominant." He understood my dog to be a family member but that I was lost on how to help her or myself. I signed up for a 2-week board/train. I was sent updates of her progress, but the first picture of her walking with his dog brought me to tears. He was working some magic that was helping my dog relax and just be a dog! On her return, Koen spent time with me teaching how to teach Blanca. I used to have to walk her only early mornings or late nights. Now we take walks whenever we want. She has learned to walk by dogs and ignore them. I NEVER thought that would be possible. My relationship with my dog went from one of defeat, to actually having what I wanted when adopting a dog, which was a companion. The 2-week board/train gave her the foundation that I continue to build on with Koen's help. He is available to answer my questions, and walk me through new challenges with confidence. On the surface, Koen may seem kind and knowledgeable but once you get to know him, he's anything but. Initially, my dog improved but halted in progress shortly after. Additionally, Koen is extremely manipulative. He's lied to, manipulated, and insulted friends of mine and even people in my family. He backs out of agreements and "begs" people to write positive reviews instead of having people say negative things. All the while, he acts like you're his best friend - saying he's there for you, why have you used a different trainer, etc. I am extremely disappointed in how he has treated those close to me and his manipulative tactics. He's got the whole "oh woe is me" act down perfectly instead of owning up to his shortcomings, failures, and lies. Do not go to him if you want to work with an honest person. While Koen is very talented in training and rehabilitating reactive pet dogs, he is very poor at maintaining that same reliability with the humans he works with. I would not recommend him for service dog training. He can train very effective and consistent basic obedience, but charges at a rate as if he is training tasks - thousands for a few week board and train. Even after staying for several months with Koen, the dog I sent there did not even have a consistent recall with the e-collar (I provided a dogtra) when I picked him up. There are other trainers in the Texas area who are just as reliable but with more competitive pricing. He has reneged the contract he signed with me and changed the rates to push me out because he doesn't like me by suddenly doubling his boarding rate from what was in the signed contract due to COVID-19. This is unprofessional at best, and malicious at worst. Despite maintaining more than four adult animals in his household, he refuses to undergo appropriate paperwork and licensure for his facility to provide legal board and trains and turned on me and reneged his contract when I tried to clarify (the consequences of not following the law include up to a Class A misdemeanor and seizure of all animals on the property, whether they are Koen's or his clients'). He cannot have his cake and eat it too. If anyone ever snitches to animal control about his lack of licensure and more than 4 adult animals (which his personal pets exceed already) you could be paying for over a thousand for a couple week board and train that could land your dog in animal control and/or no longer in your possession, and be ineligible for a refund for your board and train! According to his contracts, he can and will claim any animal under his care as his if he deems you "neglectful," and this is entirely subjective to Koen's opinion, which apparently includes losing income in the COVID-19 crisis! When I became unemployed AND was forced to shelter-in-place, I offered to continue paying our $10/day boarding as laid out in the contract we signed (not including the dog food, crate, and flea/tick/heartworm prevention I paid for), but he doubled the boarding rate. I explained I could not pay $20/day because I was placed on furlough due to COVID-19, and he tried to resell the dog I paid $5k for (in training alone) for $4,700 to a friend. Then, he broke his promise to the owners who donated the dog for service work, and has refused to discuss returning the dog to them. Koen and his wife have sent harassment and has wheedled and manipulated his other clients to contribute to said harassment against anyone who doesn't paint him in a perfectly glowing light, including when I left a similar negative review with my experience and documented proof on Instagram. He has deleted this review TWICE before on Google, and keeps a photo of ROBIN who was effectively stolen and resold for $4700 as the picture for his business on Yelp. Disgusting. It doesn't ruin his reputation, it just makes it more accurate. Caveat emptor! read more
