At J9, the server was super great and friendly, he recommended us the wines. I like sweet white wine, so I had a Riesling. My friends like dry red wine, they had a Cabernet. Also, one of my friend at the table was pregnant, and the server recommended a zero-proof wine, which I didn't know existed until then, and we all took a sip and we could not tell it was a zero proof wine, it was amazing! We were so happy to have walked by this spot while looking for a nice place to get drinks before dinner. J9 is the perfect place for that! The weather was particularly nice on the day we stopped in so the large doors that enclose the wine bar were open which made for great ambiance. There were date nights happening, couples playing cards that they'd brought, and others sharing a cheese board. We each got a glass of sauvignon blanc. Had a glass of wine here before dinner and the place has a nice library type feel to it that I really liked. Cozy and welcoming. The wine list was extensive and they also have some beer and liquor options. They also offer a cheese plate which looks good but is really their only food option so don't come here too hungry. I had the Piggyback Cider which was like an apple cider liqueur with maple syrup and lemon juice and it was wonderful! My friend and I split their small charcuterie board which was very lackluster (as you can see) I wish they could've added more to fill up the board or arranged it to look more bountiful and appealing to the eye but the cheeses and meat were delicious and the preserves and pickles complemented them well. Does nobody else find it odd that a place which only serves charcuterie meant for sharing doesn't have plates? It makes for awkward group nibbling. Charcuterie is probably overstating it a bit. They have a 3 and 5 piece option. They have three cheeses and 3 meats. Pretty limited but totally fine if you're stopping in before dinner. Again, though, what's up with providing paper napkins instead of dishware for an offering meant to be shared? The place is obviously popular - good location across from the Summer House group at Halstead and Armitage, not crazy pricing, nice outdoor space for the short summer months. We felt a little pushed out, likely because their lack of reservations - I believe they take a linited number by phone for parties over 4 - means people build quickly by the front door. Wine list was fine. Sever was educated on their offerings and made a good suggestion as an alternative to Pino Grigio (odd omission for a wine-focused menu). Atmosphere is a little confusing. Decent spot to meet a few friends for an hour but not a place worth fighting the crazy area traffic and lack of parking to go out of your way for a visit. read more

(would actually be 2.5 stars if i could) walking back along Halsted we were looking for a quick small bite and a drink before heading back home and then to dinner. debated on this spot given the one option of food but decided to give it a try since we had not been before. the service was nice enough and speedy. the vibe of this place is just all wrong. weird mix of furniture decor (felt like a mash between World Market and Pottery Barn) and poorly converted space (feels like this may have been an old art gallery? and felt just as un-cozy). the TV playing Men in Black was mystifying. though it's a personal issue i have with non-sports bars--i dislike TVs in bars like this. and lastly, the drinks were fine, though typical overpriced cocktails but that is par for the course in Chicago (my bf makes a better Aviation, and i prefer them with cherries vs lemon peel ‍). the one food option, a very sparsely put together charcuterie board was severely lacking. like a half teaspoon of fig spread to share between two people, a few almonds, another half teaspoon of mustard, some shredded pieces of serrano and tiny slices of baguette for $20 bucks? no thanks. also geez those knives that have like cut-outs of the word "cheese" along the blade (these are not weird and kitschy but they also make spread the cheeses and things more difficult) it seemed pretty popular, so it's likely this style of place will suit a lot of people in the area, but this was a miss for me unfortunately. seems to be a pattern with wine bars in Chicago having recently had another weird and terrible experience at another on Broadway near Diversey. read more

This wine bar is around the corner from work, and I recommend it to my clients anytime they ask where they can get a drink. It's cozy and intimate, and they always have really interesting selections. I asked about the differences between the two rose options, and our server explained what the wines were like, and I absolutely loved the one I chose. I'd buy a bottle of it if I saw it in the store. The seating is casual and cozy. It's dark and intimate enough for a date night, but not weird to go with friends or family. The seating is broken off into sections so you can have your own little nook. It feels very homey inside. Great spot in Lincoln Park for a relaxing glass of wine.
