Girls night! Music Bingo! How fun! Free! We came out on a week night for the bingo. We snagged a small table near the back of the establishment. There was one waitress running our half of the bar. She was busy and non stop running around. She was a little sparse because of how busy she was. We put in our orders and took a look around the room. Almost floor to ceiling velvet paintings. We counted the unicorn velvet ones from our seat and I still enjoyed the Bubba Fet painting. Its a neighborhood bar with beer and mixed drinks. Its mostly a bar, and a small menu. The tables are chalkboards and you can sit and draw or play games as you hang with your friends. Our food didn't take a long time. One of the ladies at our table got the "SPIN" spinach dip. It comes with a mix of tortilla chips and pita bread if you want both. I enjoyed the pita bread over the chips. I had the waitress help me pick my sandwich. She helped me pick the Ruben. It was pastrami, Swiss, thousand island, sauerkraut and little pickles on the side. You get to pick a side , pasta salad, potato salad, spinach salad or chips. I asked fort he pasta salad. I accidentally got the potato salad but they switched it for me when I took it back over. We stayed a while after we got done eating. Playing bingo and enjoy the event. Sunday afternoon with few patrons. Service was prompt and friendly. Clean bar and dining area but the fans and higher placed decor have several years of dust on them. Interesting decor with a variety of themes including Star Wars, Elvis, bicycles and famous people flipping the bird. Multiple televisions with various sports. Small selection of food and it was ok. I'll likely be back as I am moving to the area. It is a bar for drinking, not for dining. read more

Goodsons is one of my favorite bars in all of Des Moines! Not only do they serve awesome drinks at an affordable price, but their food is incredible! I absolutely love their wings that are smoked to perfection on site! (no dipping sauce needed) But my most favorite is their Mount Olympus panni sandwich! I could eat it everyday. I strongly recommend Goodsons for lunch, dinner or even just a few drinks with friends! A huge shout out to Kaci and Matt! They are awesome bartenders, comics & great advice givers! The people at GoodSons were really nice. The felt paintings were also really nice. The wings...are TERRIBLE. Gross, rubbery, not fried, kind of cold and wet, gross, undercooked, and possibly microwaved. I am not sure what "award" they won for these "wings", but it definitely was a self-appointed award. KT gave my wife and I the best damn service I've ever had at a bar on a date night. she made the atmosphere relaxed and casual, and didn't let assholes be assholes. I would have her as a bartender any day. 10/10 would recommend. read more

GoodSons is pretty great. Wings are some of the best in the Des Moines area. They're smoked, which is my thing, so if not yours, I get it. The regulars, the staff and the owner are all good people. Trivia on Monday nights is fun and Bingo on Thursday's can get crazy. read more

Generally, I've had no problems at GoodSons. It's a pretty typical bar with beer and such, but has an OK menu, though I don't think there are a lot of vegetarian options. My only gripe is that I've had issues with the service. Last time I was there, though this was a while ago, the waitress was drunker (that's the correct form of the word, i looked it up) than anyone in the bar. She was going table-to-table, sitting with people and drinking. I had to literally go to the bar to order food and drinks. The chalk tables are a lot of fun for everyone at the table. We were looking for a new place to grab a Saturday afternoon drink so we decided to give GoodSon's a try. This is a quality bar. One really cool attribute of GoodSons is its chalkboard tables - we ended up playing a few rounds of hangman. I was also really impressed with GoodSon's panini menu. I had low expectations because I assumed GoodSon's would have typical bar food, but the panini's were really creative and really tasty. I had the buffalo chicken panini and for dessert we shared the chocolate panini, which was also really good. We will definitely head back to GoodSon's when the weather is warmer to enjoy their panini's, their patio and a few more games of hangman. read more

I'll start by admitting something most people know about me - I enjoy the Continental. The Continental is probably my favorite Des Moines bar. The atmosphere is relaxed, the tapas are outstanding, prices are moderate, and staff is good. GoodSon's Martini & Panini is a new restaurant/bar from the same people - Kevin DuBay and Todd Petrowsky. I've been looking forward to the opening for a while, hoping it would be similar to the Continental so I could have a favorite bar close to work, and one close to home. The atmosphere is similar to the Continental but smaller. It's more open with tall ceilings so it gets a bit loud, and feels new, but it's nice. The place is new - pretty sure tonight was opening night - so the service was a bit slow and the waitresses seemed to have a hard time finding what they needed on their system, but they got our orders right and were friendly so I'll chalk that up to the new-ness unless I see a pattern the next times I go. The menu is small. I knew it was a panini specialty place, but I didn't really expect that to be all there was. They were quite good though and there were a lot of different kinds, probably a dozen choices. I had a hard time choosing. Ended up with a muffaletta and my friend had the 3 cheese. Both prepared perfectly with a crispy outside, but it collapsed nicely once you bit in. Sometimes a panini can get too crispy and get that cut-the-roof-of-your-mouth thing, but these didn't. The dessert panini's sounded good but we didn't order this time. Bar prices seem the same as the Continental. All panini's were $7.95 and came with a side. I'd say it's definitely worth the price. They're decent sized for sure. It's hard for me to make a final summary since the place is so new, so I'll reserve that for another time. For now, I'll just say I liked it enough to go back. Was it the Continental? No. But I shouldn't have been expecting it to be. read more

The server "Die Hard" made me the BEST virgin Bloody Mary without asking about my nonalcoholic preferences and just treated me like a normal bar guest - exactly what I needed. I didn't know there was a pretty extensive menu, so she showed me some of her favorites and I'll definitely be back for food next time! Went on a Sunday at like 2 pm. Service was okay...kind of slow considering not many people were there. Fiancé ordered a Bloody Mary and it was great and came promptly - I only got lemonade (pregnant at the time) and she kept forgetting about it because it wasn't a "drink" I'm sure, which was annoying. Ordered a classic cheeseburger and fries. It was okay- something was off about the burger meat to me though, and I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Goodsons Bar and Grill, is barely a grill, and mainly a bar. Their "grill" is an all panini restaurant, who doesn't even have a fryer(NO FRENCH FRIES). The tables are all chalkboards, which is cool aside from the part where they barely ever wash them off and usually have penis drawings on them. My "cheeseburger" was a burger cut in two, on hotdog-like buns which were "grilled" in a panini press. Before I even got to order, I had to wait for the owner-type person to get to the restaurant, get ready, and then take our order. After our food came, she asked if we needed anything, and then left again! She came back 20ish minutes later to give us our check. Pretty cool place to go and have a few drinks and some dinner. A small menu with mostly panini's and a couple appetizers, but everything I've had there has been pretty good. Great local bar. The bartenders are sociable, but efficient. They have a decent selection of local beer and are knowledgeable about the beer and drinks they have. They have a rotating tap of FireTrucker beer from Ankeny, which is always scrumptious. Once I leave this place I always have a yearning to come back. read more

I came in yesterday with my girlfriend, we were interested in trying the wings and have heard a lot of good things about it. The place was NOT busy, and we sat down. We waited there for 5 minutes before the waitress decided to stroll over there and serve us. It than took another 5 minutes to get 2 beers. She just didn't care and wasn't in any hurry. Her sense of urgency towards the customer was AWFUL! I drank mine, sat there for another 10 minutes waiting for her to come back which she finally did. We did not order any wings or anymore drinks and left and went over to Saints. The place had maybe 15 people....this waitress was lousy and just didn't give a crap. I would come back to try the wings, but if she is working...I will walk in and walk right back out. read more
