Had dinner on. Wednesday night around 6. I've been to MST for brunch and happy hour with apps and always have enjoyed the food and service. If going for brunch everything, and I mean everything is good. For apps I love the Brussels sprouts and deviled eggs. It is a small bar but stocked with quality spirits. Dinner- the smash burger caught my eye but my week's diet said salad so I went with the summer salad. The greens were fresh, I added chicken (shrimp and salmon also options). Sweet corn, cilantro, tomato, cucumber and pepitas add a nice mix of flavors. It comes with an avocado dressing and I don't live a lot of dressing if any on salads but I forgot to ask for it on the side. It was a little more than I wanted mixed into the greens but not too overbearing or soggy. While I ordered chicken it came out with shrimp- I asked for it to be taken off. The server offered to fry the chicken and add it but I declined and the salad was filling without the protein. The server handled the situation well, and I did enjoy the salad. My husband had the pappardelle. He really enjoyed the flavors- Italian sausage, basil, butter beans Parmesan and peperonata. His only complaint was that for the price ($22) he would have liked a little bigger serving. All in all good food and service.

This place is kind of a puzzle. Best hot honey fried cheese curds ever! I also loved the Caprese Barrata but the next time I went it was off the menu. Hmmm? Also, breakfast and dinner menus are completely different. I've been three times and it's never overly busy, almost quiet. One wait staff was average, one was inattentive even in a near dead restaurant, and one provided a calm, confident attentiveness without being obtrusive at all.

One of the best breakfast places in Des Moines. Whenever I visit in town, I enjoy getting breakfast here. Prices are reasonable, and the food is delicious. The staff are very friendly. The pancakes are delicious, they are fluffy and great sizes. The ambience is clean and inviting.

Great food! Good service! Great vibe! So pretty & light! Went on a late Saturday morning & were soon seated. I had asked for a booth so they quickly bussed one. I had a lemon curd almond delicious pancake & the chicken fried chicken & took home over 1/2! It came with an egg on top, a bit of slaw on the side, & nestled on potatoes. (Next time ask for slaw on the side/another dish.). The pancake was so interesting & tasty! The slaw is interesting & funky for brunch. The chicken was hot & delicious, as were the potatoes. Hubby & son had the MST breakfasts. The sausage was great! I even got a bite! The bread is thickly sliced & son would've liked a choice of regular thickness. The accompanying orange marmalade was yummy. Eggs were cooked as requested. You'll enjoy this top notch brunch spot!

4.0* (out of 5) Food: 5* Atmosphere: 4* Value: 3* Service: 4* 07/22/2022 We were intrigued by the name when we saw it in a restaurant search, so had to give it a try. We went last Summer and while we found it a little pricey, we really enjoyed each of the plates we ordered. As a starter, we ordered the Chorizo & Potato Empanadas (see picture) and would highly recommend them. Next, my wife ordered the Grilled Hanger Steak (see picture) and I ordered the Fried Bologna Sandwich (see picture). As an 'After School Snack', the Fried Bologna Sandwich was relatively small - but was very tasty. My wife really enjoyed the Grilled Hanger Steak - it was juicy, cooked as ordered and the sauce and toppings tasted great. If you are in the area, this is definitely a place that you'll want to give a try. There are so many unique menu items that you are bound to find one that you will enjoy. We liked MST - Motley School Tavern so much on Saturday that we went back today, so my review is for both days. CHICKEN WINGS - you had me at gochujjang, and the side salad was awesome! Great combo of wings and salad. I love wings for any meal, and these didn't disappoint. $15 MST breakfast x 3: it's the "basic" breakfast. 2 eggs, bacon, sausage patties, potatoes and toast. But it's so good, and their homemade potatoes are bomb. $10 GREEN SHAKSHUKA: not a huge fan, but I'm glad I tried it. It's a bowl of tomatillos, stewed, with spices, tahini yogurt and rolled up flatbread to sop it up. When I saw flatbread, I was thinking more pizza type flatbread. Not sure why. Anyhow, I love all tomatoes but this one was just ok. And I'm a runny egg fan but these were VERY runny; I like runny yolks but not runny egg whites. $14 CHICKEN FRIED CHICKEN: it's great, not much else to say but it's definitely delicious. I like the chicken batter flavor, sausage gravy was good and I reeeeally liked the slaw side. Actually I thought the slaw on the side brought the whole meal together. I would definitely order this again. $15 BISCUITS: I wanted a biscuit since I couldn't decide between biscuits and gravy, and chicken fried chicken with gravy. I can't say we were fans and I'm glad I got the chicken fried chicken! The biscuit is very VERY dense and tasted like clarified butter. I love me some butter but this was too much (personal preference). +1 biscuit side is $5, fyi. PANCAKES (aka "CAKES"): they're allegedly known for their pancakes, and I don't love pancakes for two reasons. 1) I do not like syrup and 2) it's too filling. HOWEVER, if they're known for them then I wanted to try them. $5 for one, but $1.99 when added to a meal. LEMON ALMOND CAKE: oh my wow! Think "lemon meringue" on top of a basic, thick pancake. Topped with almonds. Mmnnnn it was awesome, and I was so happy to not see any syrup. BLUEBERRY: blueberry pie-ish piled on top but sadly it was drenched in syrup. We were not expecting that, since the one Saturday didn't have any syrup. It was good but the syrup was too much IMO. PECAN PIE: also equally surprised that this came already drenched in syrup. So again, I had a bite to try it but avoided it otherwise. I would totally get the lemon almond one again! We had an amazing two days of breakfasts here. Their basic coffee Pammel Park was explained to us as a locally roasted coffee, and our cups were always topped off. Meals are reasonably priced, minus the one $5 biscuit side. We will definitely be back and frequently! -- at Motley School Tavern - MST.

I love first impressions. This was our first time here. I lucky got to experience a brunch on a Friday morning. A two top, we walked right in and were seated right away. A small establishment with a great atmosphere. Been meaning to get in here for a long time. I want to come back tomorrow. The food was incredible. I never knew I could love brussel sprouts in an omelet. I DROOLED over the look of the potatoes with the omelet and loved them even more with the goat cheese in the omelet. It was a win win. Perfect atmosphere to catch up with my friend and delicious food. My friend let me try her blue berry pancake. Hot dang. So good. Melted in my mouth. I recommend. Beaverdale hold onto this place!

We saw there were a few table so we decided to try it with the intention to be quick. Boy am I glad we did! Started with the sunrise juice, a carrot juice blend and the homemade strawberry lemonade both were so fresh and delicious. We tried the brown sugar and cinnamon pop tart and that was heaven in my mouth. So much flavor and goodness. I ordered the limoncello French toast and it is a slice of fresh baked lemon bread made into French toast. The flavors were rich and the texture was fluffy. A must try while it's in season. Others got the turkey and avocado Benedict and the pancakes with eggs and bacon. All cooked to perfection. Our server Jess was so nice and we did tip her well for being so last minute, but to our credit we were out of there at 6 mins after closing while everyone was still working to close up. The restaurant itself is beautiful, and the staff was incredibly kind and welcoming. They were a little busy, so service wasn't always the fastest, but everyone was very friendly. My mom ordered the meatballs and the corn soup. Unfortunately, both dishes were much spicier than she expected, and she wasn't able to eat much of either. The staff was so understanding and kindly removed them from our bill, which we really appreciated. She then ordered the fig and pear bruschetta, and she really enjoyed the combination of the fruit, cheese, and bread. The only thing that surprised us was the onion bread--it had a strong fried onion flavor, almost like onion rings, which wasn't really our favorite. I ordered the fettuccine. The pasta was cooked al dente, but the flavor was very underwhelming. It was silky and creamy in texture, but honestly, it didn't taste like much. It mostly tasted like parsley and almost watery, and some of the noodles were stuck together. I added Parmesan hoping it would help, but I was still searching for flavor the entire meal and never really found it. The texture was nice, but I wouldn't order this dish again. The food came out in about 15 minutes, which was pretty quick. Overall, while the restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere and the staff provided excellent service, the food just wasn't for me. I also noticed that several dishes leaned on the spicy side, so if you're sensitive to spice, I'd recommend asking if they can make it milder or choosing something else. Personally, I don't think I'd come back, but I truly appreciated how kind and accommodating the staff was throughout our visit.

We were greeted and asked if we were dining in (it appears they do a brisk takeout business) and were told to sit where we wanted. It was surprisingly crowded for a Sunday afternoon at 4 pm. The menu is extensive and hubby and I both like Mediterranean food. I chose the Falafel plate, served with five falafel balls, hummus, a pita, and Greek salad. The portion was generous (ended up taking two falafel home). Served with tahini and their house green sauce (olive oil, cilantro, and jalapeño) It wasn't spicy but it was so delicious - I could get addicted to this thinking of all the other ways so could enjoy it!! The Greek salad was served with house dressing - garlic and yogurt, also very good. The falafel was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, and flavorful. The hummus was not at all grainy - smooth but just a tad bland. Hubby had the lamb skewers and liked them very much. Served with rice, salad, and hummus. He also took one of the skewers home.
