I'll preface this review by stating I haven't been in the newer Goodwill location that moved across the street when Dosa opened in its previous spot in the Fillmore. What I will divulge is the two times I went into this Goodwill there was some funny stuff going on behind the scenes. The first time I went to drop off two big bags of clothing for a donation. I was met with a curt, "I can't help you now, just leave the clothes." When I asked for a receipt he again said, "I have no time, just leave them here." So, not wanting to haul the bags back to my car, I left them at the counter and estimated my donation for the IRS, hoping I wouldn't have to one day cough up a receipt. {This was about 12 years ago before proof of charitable donations tightened.) The second visit to Goodwill, about 8 years ago, I dropped off my expensive wedding dress and Priscilla of Boston veil. I showed the woman at the front desk a quarter-sized stain where someone had spilled beer on my dress. Other than a little dust at the hem, the gown was immaculate. So the woman hurries off with the dress and starts heading upstairs, excitedly calling out to her colleague, "Brenda [or whatever her colleague's name was] isn't your daughter getting married in a few months?!" So clearly in that case, the staff was "pre-selecting" my donation. I wonder what the chances are she actually paid thrift shop value of my dress? I bet slim to none. Given my unfortunate and unsavory experiences, I haven't donated to Goodwill since and instead, donate my gently used clothing and household items to Community Thrift for the benefit of Casa de Las Madres. Perhaps things have improved at Goodwill but after striking out 2 for 2, I'm done. read more

If it were back in 2014 when I first found this Goodwill, I'd give it 5 stars - but it looks like the cat's out of the bag and everyone knows what a gem it is. That said, I still drop by this Goodwill any time I'm in Japantown - which is actually fairly often, since I regularly need Japanese food (Nijiya Market)/home goods (Sanko Kitchen Essentials/Soko Hardware/Daiso)/plants (Katsura Garden/Utsuwa Floral Design on the walk home to SOMA). This Goodwill is popular since it has a lot of name-brand clothes. Mainstream brands like J.Crew, Madewell, Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, Calvin Klein are very common, and you can occasionally find designer clothes as well. My best find was a cashmere sweater that retails for ~$400. I used to buy shoes from this Goodwill all the time as well, but I've since become very picky since I moved to SF and walk everywhere (functional footwear only)! I'm also a fan of the home goods section - they have quirky stuff! My best home goods find was a vintage madeline pan from France. So very cool! Minus 1 star because this store has gotten much more popular in the past 4 years (understandably so). The staff can also be rude and snarky. read more

This place is always my to go to when i come visit japan town. . most of the time i don't find much here but this time i was with d.b. i got lucky and found me a pair of dress shoes for work. It was expensive but cheaper than going to union square and buying it full price. let's just keep it simple that it is black and silver. chic, sleek, elegant, and professional. . they have a good selection for dress shirts. shoes is rare. pants a little. active wear, Adidas shorts for 4 bucks in good condition is great. This is not the spot to shop for clothes for men. The house supplies is ok, they sell office supplies, home good stuff too. great selection for women since most of the store is filled with racks of clothes. . overall don't give up your dreams and keep on thrifting. you will find stuff when your not looking, but when your looking you aint finding it. so this was my case. when i ran into the shoes i wanted for the longest time, i did score. anyways believe in yourself. I don't know why I am telling you this, because the more people that come here, the less good crap there is for me. But this Goodwill is frickin' awesome. They have so many nice brands compared to the other Goodwills that I have been to before and I haven't really been a huge Goodwill fan until I came to this one. It's gotta be the location that results in the multitude of higher end brands. There's a lot of H&M (ok not "higher end" but cute nonetheless), Ralph Lauren and I've seen theory and Zara there too. The shoe selection isn't as great the twice times I've really looked, and neither is the home-goods section. What I really go here for is the women's clothing. Cute dresses, cute blouses, where $4.99 seems to be the magic number. I'm a low key kinda girl who likes to look cute, but is not willing to spend $80 on a blouse EVERY single time I go shopping, so this place def fits my needs. I leave with at least 5 items to spice up my wardrobe each time, and that makes me a happy shopper! read more

You can find some good under the radar brands here. However, when it's a popular brand, this location seems to be one of the few in San Francisco that will continuously mark up the prices. Some examples: plastic Tory Burch flip flops for $29.99, leather Tory Burch flip flops for $69.99, Christian Louboutins (old version with platform) for $399.99, printed Doc Martens for $99.99. If you're willing to hunt, you can find some nice staples like Madewell and Anthropologie brands, but don't come to the Fillmore location to find discounted one off gems because the staff does raise the price to those of Nordstrom on sale. read more

I like this good will - it's great for finding little household gems. I like how spacious it is compared to other thrift stores / it gets busy but the staff is very nice in my experience. I haven't tried shopping for clothes here before but there's a ton of that happening too. I love how the items get to be reused and have a whole new life. Some things are pricier than they prob should be (welcome to my urban nightmare) but there's gems to be found for sure ! read more

I've been on a Goodwill kick. Relationships are difficult, okay? Do you really want to wake the S/O up with a 5k+ credit card bill? I think not. Therefore, Goodwill. Plus, yanno, there's that whole bit about human rights, accessibility, access to employment, making the world a better place through allowing people to actively participate in commerce and giving each other and our clothing infinite second chances. But, in the moment, really, it was about some retail therapy. Because I don't want to look awful as a tenuously hold on to my ever slipping upper middle class lifestyle. Or something. Oh, right, this review was about clothing. I like this store. It has good things. It had a weird mug about pimping that made my bestie smile. And, people, my bestie almost never smiles! He's a crankypants. It also had a number of dresses that would have allowed me to live out various costume fantasies and one day-glo polyester blouse that was straight out of Boogie Nights. I left 2/3 of my favorite dresses I tried on that day here. A yellow polka dotted tennis dress vintage piece (it had ripped seams I didn't feel like sewing). And one black sheath dress with military-esque gold buttons. The latter somewhere between Korean fashion and that piece every dominatrix needs in her closet. Someone should totally go get both these pieces and repair to wear them, STAT. I settled on a green frilly thing for the next time I need to masquerade as a music festival going wood elf or something. Fashion is about expressing yourself. Or becoming other people. Depending on your perspective. You could become a lot of different people in this store. I like it! read more

I shop at the Goodwill because I am poor. I spend most of my money on booze, parking tickets and toys for my cat. I dress in black most of the time, and have decided to change my style for the new year. So, I walked in this Goodwill hoping to find a sexy polyester dress or maybe a colorful sombrero. I was shocked at the cleanliness of this location. I just went to the Goodwill on South Van Ness last week. It smelled like pee and I felt all itchy. Me and a muttering scarf lady I met in "outdoor apparel" agreed that it could be lice living in the fabric of the clothes and lying their eggs everywhere to hatch. Thus, creating thousands of little lice babies crawling all over us, making a lice city on our scalp and drinking our blood for nourishment. This place is like, 5 million stars better!!!! Maybe it's because this Goodwill is located in Pacific Heights. The people who live in Pac Heights do things with computers and have more money and drive better cars, but aren't lame like people that live in the Marina. The Marina doesn't even have a Goodwill, because poor people refuse to wear stripes. (????) Or maybe it's because this Goodwill just opened and the bacteria forming on all the clothes hasn't had time to cultivate yet. Whatever. I didn't find a dress but I did find a few black shirts. I might come back for this black belt that I saw for $2.75 because I heard from an anonymous source (fine, it was over the loud speaker) about a 2 for one belt sale next week. !!!!!!!!!!! BONUS- There are actually dressing rooms at this location with HOOKS to hang stuff on. And no random wet spots on the ground. And no hairy man hand that tries reaching for stuff underneath the gap in the door, while you are trying on a sweater wondering if there is lice in it (Flashback to South Van Ness *shudder*). read more

This has got to be one of the most organized Goodwill locations I've ever had a chance to shop at in San Francisco. As Thom Yorke says in the epic opus from KId A, it seems as though they've got Everything in its Right Place. Whether you're looking for books, electronic goodies, kitchen aides, etc... It's not hard to find what you're searching for. For the aspiring musician, they have a room with tons and tons of different instruments ranging from banjos to squeeze boxes... and they're cheap! Before hitting some of the big box stores or Pottery Barns of the world, swing by this Goodwill and see if they have what you're looking for at merely pennies on the dollar compared to department store prices. This was an interesting experience. The store was fine, didn't really find anything that I wanted, but it looked like they had a lot of nice stuff. We were visiting from out of town, and stopped in on a Sunday. As you know SF parking is bad. There was a spot open right next to the Goodwill that said "Loading Monday-Saturday, No Parking". As it was Sunday, that seemed fair game. So we parked. My friends got some stuff, which was great. The cashier was a little too interested in one of my friends and made some inappropriate advances. When we got back to our car, ready to go to the airport, the Goodwill truck had boxed us in. I really tried to use diplomatic skills and apologized, and the Goodwill staff were so angry with me, yelling, and unwilling to move the truck. I tried apologizing a number of times, to no avail. That was their spot and they wanted me to know it. They kept telling me it was illegal to park there, I kept pointing out the posted hours/times/days, and they would say "well everyone knows that it is our spot". Apparently everyone in the world should know this. I did tell them that I was legally parked (sign) and that they were illegally double parking and blocking me in. I had to resort to calling the police, worried for our flight times. The police dispatcher was so nice, and said patrol was on their way. When they realized that I may be right and that the police were on the way, they agreed to move the truck. I will not go back here, or any Goodwill in the SF area. read more

I just went here an hour ago after having a nice day with my father-in-law and son. I see this place, it looks clean and organized. Right away I find a black cardigan and a cute pink dress. I'd say this place is nice to shop in... BUT one of their employee is very rude. I was in line, and since a cashier was free, I was sent over to her line (Maria or something is her name). This lady with a child cut me, but I didn't mind, seeing that I am a mom too. So after she's done, I say very nicely Hi! to the cashier, but she gives me this WTF look. I didn't notice this old lady decided to start her own line and it built up! So the cashier apologizes to the old lady and then goes on to calling me rude and irritating because I cut, and don't respect my elders (because I'm only 19). I am a very respectable person, but there was no need to call me IRRITATING or RUDE! She even had the nerve to hand me my money very rudely. Maybe they should actually have those posts to mark where the line is next time and treat every age the same. That rant aside, I wish I could shop here again, but not this particular store after what happened today... read more

I had previously called the Goodwill on 1580 Mission St. to inquire about pick-up service for my couch. I was told that they didn't pick up furniture, so I asked if she knew of any other Goodwill's in SF that did offer that service. She didn't and was extremely rude about it. I decided to try another store. I called this Goodwill and a very polite young man answered the phone. I asked if they offered a furniture pick-up service and he gave me a phone number to call to coordinate a time to pick up. Not only was he able to give me the information I needed, but he was extremely polite, which is something the other Goodwill employee was not. Even if he hadn't been able to give me the phone number, his politeness went a long way. I really appreciated that. read more

The Goodwill Store on Fillmore is a favorite of mine. I have come here to browse a number of times and have actually left with something in hand. I normally am on the lookout for home decor and this store has never let me down. I have bought a brass vase from India, a pen and pencil stand from Isfahan, Iran, a set of cup and saucers from Minh Long Vietnam and I can go on and on. When you do visit and you see something you like, you have to grab and go. Items do get purchased quickly. To this day, I regret not buying a set of Mughal tile paintings from India. I told myself I'd think about it and by the time I returned, they were all gone. It is true though that prices here have gone up. read more

I came here based on the strength of its Yelp reviews but I was totally disappointed. The place is about average-sized for a Goodwill--not cavernous but not dinky either. Unfortunately, after going up and down the women's aisles for about 20 minutes, I came away with nothing. The housewares are just as you'd expect from a thrift store--some kitschy finds but a lot of crap as well. I imagine if you had an art project in mind, this place would be great to find parts or components. Unlike a lot of the reviewers here, I did not find those mythical, designer goods they speak of. I found a lot of what I call "mall" clothing: lots of clothes from Old Navy, the Gap, Ann Taylor, and not even from their "vintage" era! A lot of these "mall" clothes look like they were produced within the last 15 years. The upside is that it's close to public transport, namely the 38 Geary, and is near Japantown and interesting shops and restaurants on Fillmore. read more

Rude Staff, Unsafe Shopping conditions... I see others have posted there is good stuff to be found there I agree, overall the store has a lot less good stuff than a couple of years ago, so I don't go frequently. I recently visited this GW while walking through the housewares department I almost tripped on a laundry basket of hangars in the middle of the isle. I moved the basket to the side so no one else would possibly trip over it. A strange lady moved it back in the middle of the isle as I was leaving, so I let it go and left. Two weeks later the same instance in the housewares department. I'm turning to go around the shelves to the next isle and it is blocked by two large cloths racks on rollers. There is plenty of room for them near the wall but this odd lady (apparently a store associate) has them crowding down the isle to less than 3 feet wide. In the middle of the isle is that laundry basket of hangars again. I'm just recovering from knee surgery and don't need an obstacle course to get around the store. Clearly this store associate (odd lady) has some issues dealing with people and takes some sort of pride in blocking the isles with clutter and hangars. It is unsafe and illegal, people in wheelchairs could not pass the blocked location and anyone young or old would trip on the basket of hangars in the narrow space to pass with this clutter. Goodwill staff seem to be clueless on customer service and are clueless on shopper safety. If you go there watch where you walk in the housewares department or you might trip or fall due to the negligence of this store associate. If you move the clutter she will just put it back blocking people who want to shop. I started off in retail, I would never hire anyone from the Goodwill training program to work in my retail store, they are clueless.... read more

I'm not usually a thrift store kinda guy, but a few days ago I had to procure a suit and tie on short notice and didn't feel like sending a thousand bucks to Ralph Lauren (the actual price of a sport coat from the store up the street). I wandered into this shop and walked out with a pinstriped jacket, white dress shirt, two ties and a pair of dress shoes for about $23.50. Money well spent. I didn't recognize the shoe brand when I was at the store, but I looked them up online later and they retail for $430, I paid about eight, plus an extra three bucks for a new pair of shoe laces from Walgreens. Oh, and they are super comfy too. My theory is that the best thrift stores are the ones that border the nice neighborhoods. In this case all the wealthy people from Pacific Heights and the Marina donate their slightly used fancy stuff to this place, which would seem to explain my fancy shoe find. read more

Really efficient donation location, I swung by this place on a Sunday afternoon with a trunk load of stuff and I was on my way within 3 minutes. There's a side entrance for donations and all you need to do is dump your items close to the desk, fill out a form if you'd like to get a tax deduction and off you go. I learned that in addition to clothes donations they accept electronic items for recycle, I'll definitely be heading back with an old stereo I need to get rid of. read more

zomg. The MOST organized Goodwill (or thrift store in general) that I have been to. All the clothes are sorted by color and size. There is even a separate Junior's section. There's a lot of designer labels in good (almost new) condition. No weird clothes from the 80's. (You will be hardpressed to find anything for an ugly-sweater or other kitsch-themed parties.) No weird smells that are so prevalent at other second-hand shops. I would even say that this is a lot more enjoyable than shopping at Marshall's/Ross/TJMaxx. Went there today and was planning on purchasing a pair of shoes in the display case. I politely asked one of the employees if she could help me with the purchase. She simply made eye contact with me, didn't say a word, and walked away. The same thing happened when I asked another employee who had seen that I had been patiently standing next to the display case for 15+ minutes. This location is small in comparison to other goodwill's i've entered, but I personally don't mind that since it makes it easier to rift through racks without spending an entire day literally. A solid couple hours early in the morning and you are bound to find something. This location seemed to have a mix of mainstream brands (lots of banana republic, ann taylor, h&m, gap) with a few of the higher end things like J.Crew, Marc Jacobs and designer denim. I wasn't in the mood for a serious dig, but I did come out with a great black tweed J.Crew blazer that I know would cost at least a $100 retail, which I paid $10 for. With a little dry cleaning and some buttons I can tell this is going to be a new favorite in my closet. I went up the street to crossroad trading and personally preferred the goodwill. Better prices and the store was organized in a more uniformed fashion (all by size and styles, rather than just colors). read more

Staff yelled (in their nicest customer service voice) across the store repeatedly stating they were closing. I LOVE this Goodwill store. I've started shopping here when I first started grad school in SF about six years ago when it was across the street corner where DOSA is currently located. And whenever I'm in town I try to swing by and see what's there. Recent finds on my trip this past weekend: $1700 Corneliani suit for $16.99 and a $250 Banana Republic suit jacket for $6.50. I also saw an Ermenegildo Zegna Tuxedo, which wasn't my size, but is still a sweet find for whoever ends up with it. Past high end finds at this location: Escada tie, Ralph Lauren wool blazer, Facconable dress shirt, Prada belt, Coach shoes and many many other high end department store items at a fraction of the cost. Besides clothes, there are tons of ever changing bric a brac and sometimes some really good electronics too. I've found a Rotel DVD Player and a JBL center channel and subwoofer at bargain prices. Pros: Organized, good selection and helpful employees Cons: Neighborhood can be a little sketch, but really not bad at all Overall: There is cool stuff at this store. If you're willing to take the time to look you'll find some really good deals. read more

You can always find something at a thrift store! I come here mainly for the book section because I'm a total bookworm but I don't like paying $15 and up for a new book. They have a huge selection here and most of the books are $2 or less! Such a great deal. I've bought the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Eat Pray Love, and 100 Years of Solitude among others. They also have a large selection of clothes here although I haven't looked through the racks. It's easy to donate your unwanted clothes, shoes and other items; I did so this past weekend because my closet was getting a bit too full lol. Just head around the corner and you can drop off your items, just make sure you fold the clothes and separate them from your shoes because this will make it easier on the employees! read more

It can be a little too much of an adventure trying to find stuff in here, but otherwise this place rocks. They have stuff sorted by color and type (in the women's section anyway) but you really have to have something specific in mind when you're looking (unless you actually like shopping aimlessly, in which case you could spend hours here). I found a nice black jacket for my trip to Cleveland last December that I've been wearing pretty much ever since and a few choice 70s-ish looking items for a party (because we all know how likely orangey-pink is going to come back in style). It seems smaller than some other thrift stores, but the selection is decent and it's not creepy either. 4.5 stars read more
