I played the "flat 9" north course three times in the past few weeks and thought it was a great place to start my return to the game. Some of the holes are quite challenging, with only a narrow window to the fairway. No sand or water to worry about. I played the front 9 of the south course this morning and found it in great condition. There are some "ground under repair" spots here and there, but the fairways, greens, fringes, and roughs are all in beautiful condition. Prices are very reasonable. For a senior* who walks and carries his bag, it was only $14 for 9 holes. *Note: the date of birth on my driver's license indicates I am a senior... my brain vehemently disagrees!!! read more

The golf course offers nice views and the path is an easy one to follow. It's very hilly - keep that in mind - and there's not a lot of shade on the paths so it can get hot quickly. I've been golfing here for half of my life and I have never had an experience like I did today. We are all golfing on the 3rd hole to be interrupted by an older ranger at the course harassing us for our tickets while we are in our back swings. This is not our first run in with this pour mannered gentleman he has always given us and others a hard time during are matches. Canning this man would be a step in the right direction. read more

When is a park not a park? When you its part golf course and part community park. I was here one morning in May 2019 on a Friday morning running laps around Goodwin Park & Golf Course. Glad I didn't get hit by a ball. By all accounts, this scenic community park / golf course was the excellent venue to hold a marathon & half marathon event on the grounds one morning. We used the main path that looped around the interior of the park / golf course. According to Google Maps, it's called Goodwin Park Road. We just had to watch out for the arrant golf balls and people driving around in their golf carts around. Nothing happened with the golfers, although they were looking at us funny. I did enjoy the scenery while we were doing either 13.1 or 26.2, depending on which distance we signed up for. The large pond was nice and quite adorable. Every time I crossed that area, it was basically half way around the park / golf course. I didn't really enjoy the uphill leading up to the north end parking lot, but it had to be done. For the most part though, spending time at the Goodwin Park and Golf Course here in Hartford, Connecticut seemed to be more of a holiday than an endurance event. We all started at 6am and I promptly left the area around 10:15am. I did enjoy this park though. It was lovely. The overall experience here at Goodwin Park & Golf Course was nice and quite awesome. It was nice that the golfers did their thing and us runners did our thing. There was a clear cut asphalt path that starts near the corner of Maple Ave / South Street and ends up at The Hangar at Goodwin Park / north parking lot. It was about a 2 mile loop around for just about anyone and everyone to enjoy Goodwin Park. Regardless if you golf or not, having this park here is a boon to the Hartford, Connecticut community. It's somewhat away from the downtown district, but it maintains its suburbian feel to it. I assume the park is maintained by the city of Hartford. The park is beautiful and wished that I spent more time here. I did enjoy running laps around Goodwin Park & Golf course, which was my main source of experience here. If I had more time here, I would certainly hang out at the lake and make it a morning out of it. It certainly isn't the beach, but I would enjoy it. Perfect for families with kids, pets and their owners, and just about anyone who wants to get out of the urban rat race at least once a day. I would recommend coming here if you are in the Hartford, Connecticut area. It's a perfect place to stop and relax after a day of driving or a tough day at the office. Whatever you decide to do, consider coming here if you're in the area. The Goodwin Park and Golf Course is located at 1130 Maple Avenue in beautiful Hartford, Connecticut. As a park, there is no admission fees involved for anyone who wants to use the park in this manner. If you are a golfer, you'd need to pay the associated fees for using the golf course. On the Maple Ave side of Goodwin Park & Golf Course, there are generous parking options on that side of the park. Best bet would be to have a private or rental car to get here. Pretty sure there is public transit that serves this part of Hartford, but if you don't like that, consider Uber or Lyft as well. I had fun during my time here at Goodwin Park & Golf Course. It was a nice Friday morning in May 2019 when I was here. Very quiet and casual, especially when everyone is at work. This is probably what retirement feels like. This is a hidden gem. I've been golfing here for about 6 years and it has come a long way! The course consists of one 18 hole course and one 9 hole course, not a par 3 but no water or sand traps, just straight. Their main 18 hole course is great, plenty of hazards, a bit soggy in places but all in all a great, very affordable course. And I've always seen either deer or hawks. Their 9 hole course, during the week is only $9. I've also taken lessons here! Overall a great facility for an unpretentious day of golf. read more

I have never had a worse experience at a golf course. I would recommend never even driving past this place. As soon as I arrived the worker came out begging for cash. They were explaining that to even walk on the course it would be around 300$. I couldn't believe it. Unfortunately, I did end up paying this man but when me and my associates arrived on course, another different guy asked for even more money. I was forced to go into debt for this hell hole. Golfing should never be this expensive. Also, did I mention I am an African American? I think there could have been some legitimate racial discrimination due to my experience. I have heard similar things from my friends, though. Anyway, never go here worst place. Also the course was pretty shitty and not well maintained. There were dogs and wild animals roming around the course making it very hard to play. There were also several groups of tweens walking around playing loud music on Bluetooth speakers and smoking cannabis cigarettes. When I got into my cart, there was a crack pipe in the cup holder. Maybe it's only because my expectations of golf courses have changed after another year of play, but Goodwin is pretty freakin' terrible. It's not a one-star experience because it does remain cheap as hell. I just paid $20 yesterday for 18 holes, and I was a non-resident playing on a Saturday. I can only assume you cannot play golf for cheaper than that in the state of Connecticut. But this is a downright bad golf course... I guess you get what you pay for. After about 9 holes, I started to notice that nearly all of my well-backspun approach shots were not sticking on the green as usual. Then I began to realize: oh, right, there needs to be GRASS on the green in order for the ball to check up. Most of the greens did not contain grass. They did, however, contain a lovely mixture of bare dirt, patches of dead grass (doesn't count), and weeds. One of them was so bad there were actually small potholes developing in it... Talk about lift-and-replace... It's the Denny's of golf courses. read more

Awful is the only way to describe this course. We decided to play here because we heard it was under new management and that they had revamped the course. That couldn't be farther from the truth. The grass in the tee boxes was taller than he grass in the rough on any other course and the fairway was essentially woods. I typically lose two balls per 9 holes, I lost at least 1 ball per hole on the fairway at Goodwin. Overall I paid $40 for 18 holes at Goodwin. I would have gladly paid an extra $15 to play at an actual golf course. This course is a joke read more

This past weekend I played the course with a friend and paid the town resident rate of $ 40 for 18 holes and a cart. I know there is a new management team that is trying to get the course back in shape and I wish them all the luck in the world. But come on. You can't be charging $ 40 plus to play on a course in its current condition. Where are those fairway mowers? Tee boxes and fairways not cut to the proper grass height are my biggest complaint. If it weren't for that, I could live with the current green conditions until they improve. The other problem is that there is no one monitoring the course. There was a group of 12 people, mothers and kids, that were walking in the middle of the 2nd & 5th hole fairways. We rode up to them to explain that this was a golf course and that they could be seriously injured by getting hit with a golf ball. They told us that they thought it was part of the park and that they always walk around the ponds and through the area. I've played the course a few previous times and my hope has always been that the next time out things will get a little better. I'm not seeing it. I'll check back at the end of summer and see where things are. read more

One of the most poorly run facilities I have ever encountered. Seems to be indicative of ALL MDM golf courses (Gillette Ridge, Keney, Long Hill) that I have played. I had a Groupon and decided to make use of it Sunday afternoon. First of all after I checked in, I find out they didn't have enough carts so there was a half hour delay while they waited for the carts to come back in from other players. (Actually closer to 45 min). How do you run out of carts? Now Goodwin Park is a walkable course but I paid for a cart. The course was in absolute horrendous condition. The greens were atrocious with HUGE bare spots on EVERY one of them and the 7th hole has at least 3 big holes on them in addition to the one in play. What I found rather ironic was that they watered the greens. Nice of them to make sure that the dirt didn't dry out. The teeing areas were just as bare. Additionally for a muni they keep the rough extremely lush. I guess they can't afford to mow it that well but if they really want to improve pace of play they really have to. Balls were disappearing in the rough and it took forever to find. The course itself is relatively short, playing about 6000 yards from the tips. Water comes into play on multiple holes. Trees can be a problem if not hitting straight but you can play from other fairways to your hole if need be. Overall, while this wasn't the first time I've played Goody, it will be the last. At least until some other management company besides MDM runs the place. read more

Goodwin Park/Golf Course. You can barely call it either. Can't tell you how many years I've driven past this park and never gone in. Not quite sure why we decided to stop this time. Apparently this park is for people who are too cheap to play golf on a better course and for people who want to smoke weed and do other nefarious things in their car. Oh sure there were a few people (who looked like they didn't belong in the area) walking around with their ipods and expensive digital cameras exposed. I'm sure if the sun was down any little lower, they would be quickly relieved of those items. I was also informed that HPD does a few patrols in the park. I could not see spending the day here for any reason. Just a quick brisk walk (I don't trust mofos) and a wave at the duckies, and we were OUT! read more

The north course is the worst course I have ever played. That being said, I paid $7 for 9 holes, yet I somehow feel ripped off. In addition to the $7, the cart fee was relatively high at another $9. The course itself is poorly laid out. There are no signs to direct you to the first hole, and then when you get there, there is no cart path to take you down the fairway or to the next hole. The second hole had no signs and there was no indication on where to go. I ended up driving back to the tees at the 1st hole to ask a random guy where I was supposed to go. Once I got to the second tees, the pin was only 106 yards from the tee box. Now, I realize this course is made for beginners and people trying to get a quick game in, but that's really short for a par 3. There is hardly any care taken to the course itself. There are bumps, ditches, and bare land throughout the whole "fairway." If you hit a ball into the rough, you might as well take a drop, because you wont find it in the high, unkempt dandelions and weeds. On the 5th or 6th hole, I hit a nice shot close to the hole. When I got to the green, I couldn't find my ball anywhere. After about 10 minutes of searching, I found it parked against the 3-4 inch high "fairway" on the fringe. The grass was so high, I lost the ball on the fringe! Overall, there is no challenge to the course. No water, no sand, and large, flat, short lanes. The difficulty comes in hitting among hard, packed dirt, divots, and the general neglect this course features. Seriously, I know it's only $7, but save the money and hit some balls out in a cow pasture. read more

I hadn't played Goody in 50 years and the past reviews sounded dire. But, since it was on my CBS Golf coupon card, I decided to go back and reminisce. Boy was I surprised to find the course to be as good as other public courses I play (Rolling Meadows, Twin Hills, Cedar Knob, Black Ledge to name a few). I've played many golf courses in CT, and elsewhere. Yesterday (06.24.14), I played on the worst greens in my life. $50 (47 and change) for that lack of quality should be a crime.
