One of the best systems on the planet in a great sounding room, at one time they had Magico Q7 mkII, Spectral DMA500SV, being fed by a dcs VivaldI Apex stack. I've heard amazing systems. This one was clear and holographic on another level. Probably could cost 300,000$ for that system today, but it made Wilson Alexia V sound like garbage TBH. They also leave you alone at Goodwins. They just let you listen as loud and long as you want even if they know you can afford it. It is true that they don't provide much customer service but people going to Goodwins gener may know more than even the staff does so I consider this a plus. read more

Very weird experience. Went there last Wednesday, met with sales person who could not have been nicer. He thought it best to send someone to my house to look at the layout, and we agreed we would do it Saturday subject to the person's schedule. He told me he would get back to me later that day. He didn't call, so I called on Thursday, and he said he wasn't sure if the guy who was going to come over was available, but he would get back to me shortly. Well, here it is, Monday, and I am still awaiting the call. Not used to this type of poor service. Perhaps he sensed that my price point was not high end enough for them, although I never mentioned a budget and was and am prepared to pay quite a bit to get a great system. It is the simplest thing in business to communicate. They lost a good sale by dropping the ball. read more

Once you're buzzed in at the front door you'll set foot in a place you will lose yourself in for hours and will never want to leave. With a friendly staff and rooms upon rooms of incredible audio equipment there's not much to dislike about Goodwin's. You will be greeted by one of their friendly, knowledgeable staff members and you can either state what you're looking for or they can give you professional insight to what products will suit your needs. Being experts in the business they know exactly how to treat a customer and you'll never find anyone being pushy about any of the products in Goodwin's. Once you've spoken with an employee you're either free to roam the available auditioning rooms and poke around, or they can set up different products for you to listen to. Unlike some other audio stores, the representatives at Goodwin's will get you what you want to listen to, and leave you be to take as long as you like listening to some of the finest audio products on the market. With products ranging from entry level to reference audio systems it's hard not to find a product that suits your needs, not to mention your budget. However after hearing some of what they have to offer it may be hard to go back to what you've got at home. Places like this are getting harder and harder to find. I wanted to listen to speakers for my new home theater setup. I set up an appointment. They set up a listening room for us and let us hang out for as long as we wanted. No pressure. I ended up ordering all 6 speakers for my new Home Theater. Malcom was super nice and helpful and very knowledgeable. We need to support these local stores. Buying my TV from a big box store and having A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE (ok you dragged it out of me, it's Best Buy). Places like Goodwins are diamonds! Highly recommend. read more

I spent a lot of time and money at Goodwins. in my multi-year experience with this once highly reputable business, they love to sell but are poor in the follow through. They substantially underperformed in helping me set up my system at home, sold used equipment they could not get to work, and when I asked for help one of the technicians literally hung up the phone on me. They have great equipment but I reluctantly will never give them my business again and I feel others should know about this. I agree with the reviewer who says the "after sales service was a disaster". Finally, they have barely kept up with the digitization of modern streaming equipment. read more

Not sure I visited the same store as the other folks leaving reviews. I was visiting Boston and wanted to look at purchasing a digital music server, and these folks carry two respected brands. I was also looking to upgrade my current phono cartridge. I was buzzed into the store (the front door is secure), and then roundly ignored by the staff for half an hour, including by the guy who buzzed me in. No acknowledgement when I walked in, no greeting, no "we'll be with you shortly", no nothing. There were a couple other customers in the store, but there were also several staff members. I was treated to a resounding, frosty silence for thirty minutes. So I left. As a note: I recognize that sometimes high-end audio stores have folks visit who aren't interested in buying -- but how to tell without a conversation? read more

I had a full home system installed with Goodwin and while they did a great job selling all the features and benefits and setting everything up, the after sales service was a disaster. 1. They don't tell you how much it'll cost you to maintain the system upfront. I was surprised, when Verizon changed the cable box and Goodwin said it'll cost $800 to $1000 to reprogram the system. 2. They I got a new Iphone and they said it'll be $150 to set up the controls on the new iphone - really?? 3. Then when I wanted to make some incremental changes a year after installing the system, they said their main programmer who worked on my system (remotely from PA) has left the company and they don't have anyone who can work on our system. So what did they offer.... ...they said they'll send me a zip drive with all the programs and I'll have to find someone else. Not even a recommendation from them. There are other much better system installers in the market. Now that I know more about whats available I look back and it was absolutely the wrong decision on my part to go with Goodwins. Not recommended at all. read more

I recently made a purchase at Goodwin's and found it to be an excellent experience all-around. Even though I was buying at the low-end of what they sell, Steve spent a lot of time with me, allowing me to test out different gear together, compare alternatives, etc. There was no pressure at all, and a definite sensitivity to my budget and getting the most value for the money. In some cases, he talked me down from upgrades that were not worth the money, in his opinion. Steve is passionate about music (vinyl especially), so he also had recommendations for record storage, cleaning, and so forth. It was a great buying experience overall, and I highly recommend them. read more

Every time I visit Goodwin's I think that I'm in audio heaven. Goodwin's specializes in home audio and video products but not the junk you find in a Bestbuy. The sales staff there really know audio and take the time to explain the why's and how's for your needs. They also sell used home audio units at pretty good prices. read more

The experience there was GREAT when Al Moulton worked there. He was friendly, knew his stuff, and not pushy. Without him, the service has gone to zero. I was working with him to upgrade a system, but can't go back there now since their service sucks so bad now. No callbacks, no follow up, nothing. Pissy attitude on the phone. Hire Al back, please! Took my old LP12 turntable to these guys for a set up and additional work. The work took exceptionally long, due to improper intake and handling by an employee who I learned later was leaving the company--this was frustrating. However, the work was excellent and the store manager went out of his way to make good on the departed employee's mistake. This is a shrine that will take you to audio nirvana, treat it as such and it will take you there. After you've sunk a few thousand well spent dollars and you are ready to go whole hog, there's Goodwin's ready to help you out. Every time I go I call in advance to ask if its a good time, they treat me respectfully and let me listen for pretty much as long as I'd like. They don't expect anybody to make a quick buy and the customer service is very nice. If audio is your hobby, you have to be grateful. read more

The store has the best items, these guys really know what they are doing, and they are friendly too. Perhaps you get some idea of the efficient and personalized service that Goodwin's High End provides from the story of my system upgrade, which is why I describe it here. My first contact with the store years ago, when I was buying a subwoofer, already had left a positive impression. More recently I was looking for a remedy for some harshness in the sound from my system. After discussing with Paul at the store, he let me audition in my system a D/A converter at my indicated price point that was critically acclaimed and that he judged to be outstanding. Yet while it was better than my old DAC, I did not hear significant enough differences, and it did little to solve my harshness problem. Like me he thought that under those circumstances it made no sense for me to purchase it, and indicated he was no fan of too small improvements for the price. We discussed what was likely to blame for both harshness and the fact that I did not hear so many differences between the DACs in my system, and we ended up agreeing on acoustic room treatment, which they offered unlike other high-end stores in the area, and which they have equipped all their own listening rooms with. Paul worked with the respective company to get plans for custom designed treatment of my room (tube traps, sound panels). He also advised me how to implement it in steps, according to my budget. The result was far beyond expectations. The room treatment solved practically all my problems with harshness (while natural hardness of sound was preserved), and gave incredible additional sonic benefits, including much better detail, dynamics and acoustic separation of musical strands, as well as a deep and layered soundstage that before had been flat. Yet ultimately I still was looking for another DAC. Upon request, Paul let me test in my system two cheaper yet also highly acclaimed DACs first. After they turned out to perform less well than my own DAC, I decided to try again the DAC that I had initially auditioned upon Paul's suggestion. This time it was a hit. With my vastly improved acoustics, the unit indeed turned out to be the immense bargain at its price point that Paul had said all along that it was, and provides jaw-dropping resolution through my system that I had not thought possible from CD. A slight remainder of harshness left after acoustic room treatment, which I had hardly noticed anymore, is gone as well. Paul also sold me a great second-hand digital interconnect between CD transport and DAC for a really low price. Overall, with the room treatment and the new DAC, my system has undergone an incredible transformation towards extraordinary sound and superb clarity of musical presentation, a transformation that I could not have dreamed of some time ago. I obtained enormous value for my money. All this played out spread over about a year's time, and Paul guided me through the process with great knowledge and always friendly service, and never put any pressure on me. Rather, he made sure that I was able to appreciate the value of my purchases by testing all the options in a proper way, and that I obtained tremendous value based on the excellent products that the store had selected over the years. My encounter with others at the store, including Alan, the owner, left a favorable impression as well. I highly recommend Goodwin's High End, it is the best store of its kind that I know. read more
