Gorditas El Tio is a casual Mexican Restaurant located in a Phoenix Shopping center anchored by a Food City. English is the second language here so the food is authentic style. They have a very large menu and make almost everything you can think of. You order at the counter pay, seat yourself and wait for your tray of food to appear on the counter. It's not a fancy place and sort of looks like a fast food restaurant. Our order took 30 minutes. Basically most of the food was ok.......but don't get the fried tilapia. Mine was over cooked and was dry and crunchy. My husband said the shrimp in hot sauce was tasty but some shrimp were cleaned and others weren't. He also tried two mini tacos. He said the asada was better than the carnitas. 2.5 stars

It takes 32 minutes. (The time needed to get from SW baggage claim to the curbside pick-up to the highway to the very first stop on my every trip to Phoenix - authentic Mexican food at Alberto's....I mean, El Tio....same diff...and good at any location. They'll tell you they're different and that there is some type of territorial feud going on between the two locally-operated chains. But, don't believe the hype....they just like to give you reason to keep jumping back and forth between both their great menus! Go for the burritos, stay for the chips with pseudo-guac and homemade salsas!)

I had added a Mexican soda and the total came out to $10.10

The most authentic Mexican food you could possibly find! My total came out to 10.10. Order 3 street tacos which comes with two sides and an order of Mexican soda. The food was good, but they are really rude as if they don't value your business and speak to you rudely when you are ordering your food. It sucks that the customer service was awful because the food was great. I'm pretty sure they were rude because I didn't look Mexican, she was sure surprised when I responded back in Spanish. I don't plan on returning until they train their employees. ******Warning: Spanish Speakers****** When I went to go order they spoke ONLY Spanish which caught me off guard. Luckily for me I'm fluent. If you plan on coming here bring a friend who speaks Spanish! te habla groseramente como si ni siquiera quieren a tu negocio. Hay más restaurantes mexicanos que yo preferiría ir a donde tratan a sus clientes con respeto.

Very nasty carne asada served here in Mexico, Phoenix. The Mexican speaking cashier had to be substituted for an English speaking person midway through our order. This is not Trump country. Upon arrival home with carne asada burrito, I took three small bites before noticing an avalanche of fatty pieces and grizzle. It was pretty standard stuff for these type of places, so I actually took a major leap of faith, but was wrong. The carne ended up dumped out in the trash soon after that third bite. One white businessman was inside during lunch amongst a throng of Mexicans who apparently love fatty, grisly carne asada burritos.

To die for. Chips are gratuit. Service is prompt and knowledgeable. The entrance is via the kitchen as this was once a home, now converted into a great eatery. So you come in the side door to the dining room . Wait staff all greet you and guide you to the dining room, festooned with roses and talavera tiles. It's not kitschy, just gorgeous. The menu is ample and you can't go wrong with anything. The initial refrito dip, tho yummy, has pork. But they have the best, the absolute best black beans!! Try them just for a change. The restaurant is inside of an old brick home with wood interior and warm colors. The service was good-- friendly and food came out at a good pace, we were checked on regularly. We ordered an appetizer and then entrees from the lunch menu. The aguachile appetizer is SO good. It's bright, fresh, and has a lot of flavor in the green sauce. It reminds me of a ceviche type dish due to its raw butterflied shrimp that is marinated in the house made chile serrano & cilantro citrus sauce. It was awesome. We were also given free chips & house made bean dip. I ordered the mixed two item plate with a chile rellano and taco corazon (grilled taco dipped in a red chile sauce, stuffed with shredded beef & melted cheese. Topped with grilled onions). The black beans and rice is also tasty. I tried a bite of the other dishes, and I also really liked the brightly colored spinach & cheese enchiladas with pink sauce ( signature beet sauce). I look forward to trying other items from the menu, I was eyeing the steak Mexicano or red snapper. Those dishes sound good for dinner.

This restaurant is centrally located near the ASU campus and offers generous patio seating in addition to their indoor dining area. I was greeted upon entering and since I was dining alone I decided to sit at the bar. I didn't realize you were supposed to order at the register at the bar, but the bartender was kind and took my order from my seat at the bar instead. I started with chips and salsa, which came with guacamole but I'm not a fan so I didn't give it a try. The chips were perfectly cooked and seemed to be house-made or at least a high quality chip as they were thick and had a good salty flavor. The red salsa had good flavor but mild spice. The green salsa was bright and had a little kick to it. I wasn't super hungry, so I only ordered one chicken taco (without the avocado salsa). The taco was pretty good, although I was anticipating a chopped grilled chicken but it came with more of a pilled marinated chicken. Still good, just not what I expected from a more "authentic" taco. I also missed having a salsa bar with toppings (onions, pico, etc) that you can add. Instead these tacos came as designed by the chef. I also ordered the mango and original house margaritas, both were refreshing and hit the mark with the chips and tacos. They had a $5 margarita for a special as it was Monday, but my margarita was full price. Not sure what the difference was, perhaps a lower quality tequila? This is a great spot for a quick bite or a light happy hour. They are newer, so show some local support!

Also bring a group. The portions are huge and the food is clearly meant to be shared. Trust me on this one, bring friends. I've tried a bunch of dishes here, and there are a few I always go back to. For the table, Camarones Locos is an easy choice. The flame grilled shrimp comes out hot and full of flavor, perfect for passing around. La Patrona ceviche tower is massive and worth the order. When it hits the table, you immediately feel good about the decision. El Pulpazo is technically an entrée, but we always order it as a shareable. The octopus is grilled perfectly and it comes with rice and beans, so everyone gets a little of everything. For entrées, my number one pick is the Lobster and Crab Enchiladas with green sauce. I think about this dish at least once a week. The enchiladas are packed with lobster and crab, and the green sauce ties the whole thing together. Honestly, I could talk about this place all day. If you like Mexican food and seafood, you need to try it. Great food, big portions, and a menu that makes it hard to stop ordering.

To start, we ordered margaritas, Jarritos, and a few tequila shots, which were the perfect way to kick off the meal. For appetizers, we enjoyed the tostada de ceviche, prepared oysters topped with shrimp, bacon-wrapped shrimp served with rice and beans, and the aguachiles. Every dish arrived beautifully presented and freshly prepared, showcasing the vibrant flavors and quality seafood that this restaurant is known for. The ceviche was refreshing and full of bright citrus notes, while the prepared oysters were flavorful and complemented perfectly by the shrimp topping. The bacon-wrapped shrimp were cooked perfectly, offering a delicious balance of smoky and savory flavors, and the accompanying rice and beans were a great addition. The aguachiles delivered just the right amount of heat and freshness, making them a standout dish for seafood lovers. Beyond the food, the restaurant itself is colorful, lively, and full of character. We initially sat on the patio, which was a pleasant setting, but as the afternoon temperatures rose, we moved indoors where the atmosphere remained equally vibrant and comfortable. Our party arrived right on time for our reservation, but we were not seated until 15 min later because our table was not ready. It took about an additional 15 min to get tap water for the table (there was not enough provided anyways), and to place our orders too another ~20 min. The food did not arrive until 30 min later. For context, we eventually learned that the restaurant was short staffed and the bartender was also operating as our waiter. When the food finally arrived, there was a mix-up on what was delivered. We had checked with the staff who delivered one of the dishes: we ordered the "wild mushroom" side, but what we received did not look quite like it. We asked clarifying questions x2, but were assured, "no, it is the wild mushroom." Turned out, it was the mushroom empanada that was delivered to our table, which we originally did not order. The management did rectify the situation upon the conclusion of the event when we were paying the bill, but to us, it felt a bit accusatory as if we intentionally wanted to cause a huge fuss about the final total, which was absolutely not the case. The food in general was delicious. If this was a more standard dining experience, it would have been 4-5 stars just for the food. The service was very subpar, and really colored the entire experience negatively, therefore the two star review. I understand that staffing shortages happen -- fine. My family has worked in food service as wait staff for 25+ YEARS, so I am empathetic. But for management to ring up our bill and then come confront us in an inflammatory manner, making us feel like we were wrong, on an occasion to celebrate something special, was extremely disappointing.
