We were already looking forward to the opening of this place. They made the growing anticipation even more intense by dropping off a reusable bag with a 5% off coupon to every house in the neighborhood. How could we not go? This place is a fun mix between what we know GFS for and a traditional grocery. For example: they have ketchup in 10# cans, 6 packs and individual bottles. This puts another grocery in walking distance and really does up the ante for the FF down the road. The pricing is very similar and they do run sales. The space isn't huge but they have really thought about what to put in here. They still have my favorite section (to go containers) but don't stock alcohol or pet items. The meat counter and bakery section have quite few offerings and plenty of staff to point you in the right direction. We got the fajita mix from the meat counter and it didn't disappoint! The points system you see next to the price tags are for business or non-profits only. Parking wasn't a bother even though the place was packed and the lines had almost no wait time either. The store itself is great but the ladies working the deli counter are next to useless. Too about 15 minutes to even be acknowledged and there were only like 3 other people there. GFS is known in Grand Rapids for being a supplier to restaurants and the place to go if you're having a grad party or catering your own wedding. At least, that's what I knew it for. However, they just opened a brand new concept store in the heart of Midtown on Michigan between Diamond and Fuller and I think it's a game-changer. It's super exciting because it's a very convenient location for not just me but lots of other people in the area. The addition of this store is making the area even more walkable which is awesome. My boyfriend and I stopped in on their opening day to check it out after months of anticipation. The store has so many fun things, including: +guacamole bar (made to order with your choice of mix ins) +fresh squeezed orange juice station +fresh lemonade (like the kind you get at the fair and festivals) +olive bar +fancy cheese selection +$5 rotisserie chickens +quality seafood and meat counter +deli with lots of to go prepped food +lots of chocolate and pastries / desserts (think Martha's Vineyard) +ice cream counter This is all in addition to the regular stuff you'd find at a store - produce, grocery and pantry staples, etc. They also have paper products (toilet paper/paper towel) and the regular bulk food items you'd find at a normal GFS supply store. They don't have baby food, alcohol, pet supplies, greeting cards, textiles, clothing, etc. Mainly just food and basic grocery supplies. The produce seemed to be a little more expensive than Meijer or Aldi but not by a lot. They have a section in front of local products including Madcap coffee, Ferris Coffee & Nut coffee, nuts, and candy. They also have Monica's Gourmet Cookies, another local favorite. Everyone working was super helpful, happy, and excited to be there! The store itself is a bit cramped so it might be difficult to maneuver if it's really busy. There is surface lot parking available behind the building that I think is free at least for now. Overall this is a 5 Star establishment for sure. It feels like a cross between Martha's Vineyard (in terms of the deli and dessert area) and a D&W. It has a bit of an upscale feel but it's not snooty or pretentious. It's a comfortable neighborhood store that is wonderful to have in the area. I will absolutely be shopping here in the future and I hope it does well for a very long time! read more

This is my go to grocery store even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although this store is smaller than most grocery stores like Meijer, foot traffic is generally significantly less, so they are well stocked, and it's easier to stay safely 6 feet away from others. Everyone I have interacted with in the store has been friendly and helpful. They are still lacking in dairy free options as compared to the bigger grocery stores but they do sell soy milk and almond milk now! Unfortunately their bakery is currently closed, but their premade food area is still open. Parking is ample and located behind the store. read more

I came here for a Yelp event, but ended up staying and shopping afterward: to be clear this review is just for my after event shopping. I had no idea what to expect when we came in, but it definitely was not "Small corner grocery story." I was blown away about how nice the interior was, and the variety of things they had on hand. We live not far from this location so it's great having another grocery store option. I'd put GFS as somewhere between a normal grocery store and Costco - they have bulk items like Costco has, but they have a larger variety of items than Costco, plus non-bulk like a normal grocery story has. It's a really neat mix, and I really enjoyed just walking around and taking everything in. They had a really nice meat and deli counter, and a neat little bakery (they don't make their bakery items in house, but have it shipped in from a small bakery in Chicago - they do decorate their items in house though). Prices are (as expected) good on a variety of items. They are better than our normal grocery store (D&W) on a lot of items, and are competitive or better than Costco on bulk items as well. There are obviously exceptions - candybars would be cheaper at Costco as an exmaple, but they had more variety so....it evens out. Anyway - Highly suggest checking this place out if you're on the lookout for a better grocery store and live in the area. read more

First time customer. Went in just to have a look around. Found they have a wonderful 'Antipasto Bar'. Fell in love w/ their Berry-Prosecco sorbet...OMG!!! Gluten-free, dairy-free...sooo fantastic. I go here often for deli meat/cheese. Great customer service, often fresh. Two incidents NOT happy with, purchased a burnt rotisserie chicken, I could see through the container it was 'over-cooked' but I needed it for dinner. My second incident, twice I noticed the counter person NOT changing gloves prior to touching my 'exposed' food!!!! I questioned it but, I'm pretty sure I was lied too. The second time I watched carefully. The person (not same) was cleaning the counter, solution and rag in hand, set down, came and asked to help me. I gave the person my order, they didn't remove (cleaning) gloves, walked over to get the item, started slicing, I stopped them and asked if they would mind changing their gloves, the person did. I have experienced poor customer service with the manager named Rick. I purchased fresh chicken breasts. They spoiled in 2 days. He gave me a hard time and was not going to accept an exchange. He also told me there is a 2-3 day spoiled food policy. He would not me speak to explain the entire situation. I finally was able to tell him the package sell by date stated 10 days. I returned the spoiled chicken to GFS so they could dispose of it in their dumpster instead of my garbage. He was still rude and very condescending. I did not want a refund or exchange. It wasn't about the $4 is was about the bad customer service and their unusual spoiled meat policy. Very sad. read more
