John was also a straight shooter from the beginning, and we always felt fortunate to have found Gordon Manor. Ultimately, my dad ended up moving to another facility to be closer to family. Even during that difficult transition, the entire staff could not have been more gracious and respectful. They never once made us feel uncomfortable, and it was obvious how much the staff genuinely cared about my dad. That meant more to our family than I can express and spoke volumes about the relationships they build with their residents. Finding the right home for a loved one with memory issues can be incredibly difficult, but choosing Gordon Manor was an easy decision. I also encourage families to review their publicly available licensing records through the California Department of Social Services. When we reviewed them, the absence of complaints and citations was remarkable, and based on our experience, not surprising. Their team guided us through the transition with such compassion that it eased a burden I didn't realize I was carrying. I wanted her to be somewhere she would be protected, respected, and truly cared for. Kensington has given her all of that--and more. I visit her almost every day, and from the very first moment, I saw the staff treat her not as a patient, but as a person they genuinely care about. Management will be all supportive if you keep your mouth shut and any updates will be sporadic, not truthful, inconsistent and sadly, non supportive. Senior leadership lacks oversight and you will be gas lighted on multiple levels. The price is sky high and you do not get what you pay for. Food is good if you order off menu vs vats of food specials. Sadly, they simply do not care much for residents as evident on multiple visits and their motto of caring for your family member like family is not factual. Avoid this place.

Before placing someone you love here, I strongly urge you to review the facility's public licensing and complaint records available through San Mateo Department of Social Services. Recent records include extremely serious allegations and/or substantiated findings involving resident safety and care, including sexual assault of a memory-care resident, medication mismanagement, unsanitary and urine-soiled bedding, unmet incontinence needs, failure to respond to residents' calls for assistance, missed medications, and inappropriate photographs of vulnerable residents. Our own experience has been equally concerning. My father went to the emergency room twice within the first six weeks at Oakmont, and his longtime physician at Menlo Medical Clinic urged us to find another facility after experiencing difficulty reaching staff to discuss his care and medication management. We personally found my father dressed in dirty clothing, unshaven, and sleeping in urine-soiled sheets. We ultimately moved him and his new home has made us realize just how bad Oakmont was for his mental and physical well being. My mother remains on the assisted-living side, but we are now taking immediate steps to move her as well. She has missed meals, rarely bathes without intervention, and has declined significantly since moving there. I recognize that some of this may be the natural progression of aging and cognitive decline, but the utter lack of communication and consistency of care has left us deeply concerned. Moving an elderly parent is enormously disruptive, so this is not a decision we are making lightly. Please do your research and read the public regulatory records before choosing Oakmont. Based on our family's experience, I cannot recommend this facility.

I hope things have improved since then) The terrible management at CS had completely destroyed my trust in any facility but I had no choice but to start looking around on my own. I visited a place in Union City which was way out of my budget but the staff in marketing actually seemed like decent, caring people. They recommended I call Sandra Wallace, and I did. Sandra came to meet my mother and I at Casa Sandoval. I was immediately impressed by her experience, professionalism, knowledge of the state laws regulating care facilities and especially her knowledge of the various facilities and costs in the area. After looking at several places she recommended I check out, I moved my mother to Rosegate in San Leandro. She lived there for almost five years until she died at age 93, very well taken care of. I was very happy. I had some problems in the first six months at RG but Sandra helped me get them resolved. Her knowledge and understanding of memory and cognitive impairment is amazing. In addition to managing facilities she also has hands on experience taking care of her own mother and understands the every day challenges of caregiving. In 2019 we started looking for a place for my aunt, who also has Dementia. I called Sandra and she helped us find a place we liked in Castro Valley. But then the Pandemic arrived and changed everything. My aunt came to live with us instead, which was a very challenging time. In September when I was at my wit's end I called Sandra again and asked for help. She recommended Quail Garden in Livermore, which is lovely AND they were allowing outside family visits which was critically important to us. My aunt has lived there since October and it's been great. I cannot recommend Sandra more highly. She is a powerhouse of knowledge and support. She is a person of integrity and stands by her clients. She checks in from time to time to see how things are going and goes the extra mile to solve any problems that may be going on.

These other facilities were newer and fancier (complete with smaller rooms and 10%/yr price increases to keep their publicly traded parent companies happy!), but they didn't come close the warm and welcoming environment we found at the Elms. The staff are wonderful: happy, relaxed, dedicated and you can tell they truly care about the residents. The Elms is a nonprofit and was started by San Carlos; you can see the focus is on the wellness of the residents, respect of the staff, and bringing as much comfort and joy to the community as possible. The residents are lovely and my mother has made very nice friends (they had a little holiday party in one of their rooms this week, and another family brought my mom a small Christmas tree for her room). The downtown San Carlos location allows residents who are able can walk to the wonderful offerings on Laurel Street. We walk to restaurants, the farmers market and seasonal street fairs; it feels like a breath of normalcy amongst all the changes that have been forced on her over the last few years. The Elms has a good variety of programing for the various abilities and interests of their residents. Today my mom and I caught an acoustic guitar holiday music show in the lounge. It was such a gift to enjoy that with her. The holiday parties are quite fun and everyone participates. The administration reaches out at regular intervals to make sure everyone is doing ok. The housekeeping and medical staff have been very responsive and easy to work with. I imagine managing the expectations and needs of this age group is a challenge but I think they do a great job with a tremendous amount of compassion and patience. I believe most of the staff has been with the Elms for some time and everyone seems to know whats going on and has a great deal of competence. Ultimately the biggest winner in the arrangement has been my mom. Her neurologist said her test results have improved over the last year which she attributed to her environment and having socialization, quality food and stimulation (and professional medication management). Moving a loved one out of their home is a very hard choice, but I am grateful for the Elms staff and their sensitivity, kindness and caring they show towards the residents and their families.

The town of San Carlos is also the perfect walking town for an ambulatory elder! Across the street is the library. Two blocks away is the Senior Center (if your loved one wants more activities.) A block and a half away is the pharmacy. Three blocks away is the bank, post office and grocery store. Two blocks away is a coffee shop, and Laurel street which has lots of activities (pictured here.) If you or your loved one is considering The Elms, please contact Amanda and get on the waiting list ASAP, we waited a year for my mom's name to come up and it's been life changing! She was not happy about it but the staff assured me that it was not unusual and that they would help her acclimate. And they did. After about a month she not only was acting as though she'd been there 20 years but had befriended another lady who she had all her meals with. Bayview is clean and safe and while not inexpensive is about half what you would pay for 24/7 care at home by licensed caregivers. I owe a big debt of gratitude to the staff and administrators who made this an easier transition, not only for my mother, but for me as well so that I did not have to worry any longer about an independent nonagenarian still living at home by herself. Staff was caring and attentive and always available. The facility itself is very well kept up and during holidays always decorated. Highly recommend.

My Manager and I could not have been any further from each other regarding religious attitudes, yet we worked well together, she made herself available for questions, held monthly staff meetings to air any grievances, brainstorm, and often food was provided. As for the Employee handbook, It's pretty airtight, and most times I had a question for my manager the answer would be in the handbook. Kainos could not be a better program to work for. It is an assisted living located in Redwood city. The facility has ALWAYS put the needs of the clients first. The previous impersonator mentioned Andy. I didn't see Andy every day, but I did interact with him every other month or so. I could not ask for a better Executive Director. He was always clear, respectful, and calm.
