So, my family and I are sitting in Gorman's waiting for our food as I write this. My wife and daughter actually got their food about 5 minutes ago, my son and I are still waiting. The milkshakes had ice in them, from freezer burned ice cream I assume. The food is food, not very flavorful but not the worst either. The prices are expensive for the subpar food and slow service. We've tried it, we won't be back. And I suggest you avoid this spot as well. read more

We stopped in for lunch after running an errand. The place looked really cute and we were hungry. Hubs and I split a Chocolate Banana shake which was really good, probably the best thing we had. He had French Onion soup to start which was good but the cheese was all at the bottom instead of on top and broiled. It was odd. I don't remember what he followed that with, I think a burger which was fine. I had the french dip which was ok but the au jus was completely lacking in flavor and it was greasy. Fries were fine. I love to support local businesses and live nearby but can't continue going to a place that serves mediocre, over priced food and forces their political agenda on patrons both outside and inside the restaurant. The final straw was your support of school board candidates who don't have the best interests of the district in mind. This place is more about the atmosphere than the food. It has a country-kitsch feel and oldies playing on the speakers, and you can sit in a booth with a view of a farm field and/or Stillwater Boulevard. The food (I had steak and eggs) isn't amazing (the steak was about 1/4 gristle), but I'd say it's good enough for eating in the sunshine with a country view. The service was friendly and satisfactory, though not amazing. Worthwhile if you're in the area and need a meal, but nothing to go out of your way for. If you like a small-town place with average food this place is ok. The food is your very basic eggs, pancakes and burgers. If the food comes wrong, cold or service is slow do expect to have anything comped. If you get there and see an open booth don't expect you can sit there. This place has all kinds of rules of who can sit where. If you're family or friends of the family, you have reserved tables. If arrive on Saturday morning and that nice booth by the window is open, don't expect to sit there. You'll be told it's reserved for someone else. Even though for the next hour it sits empty. The who experience leaves a cold feeling of the staff going through the motions of their daily life and having to deal with customer who get in their way. They continue to talk to other staff and customer while pouring your coffee. The staff talks way too loud and about too much. They forget customers are around and have conversations way out of line for the business. The regular waitress during the week talks way to loud which can usually be heard across the entire restaurant. The owners daughter is just a loud mouth. I had high hopes for this restaurant. I was let down. The Good: the establishment had a clean and pleasant environment. Decent seating. The service: our server was nice enough. That's it. After bringing the food, she did not come back to ask if the food was okay. Actually, the food was minimally warm. No drink refills, no asking if we wanted anything else (we did). After our entree's, we wanted to try the wings. Server brought wings and no napkins or side plates. Just placed them in the middle of the table and left, without speaking a word. Food: food temperature, food safe, maybe, but not hot. Hashbrowns, decent. Biscuits and Gravy, bad. Very small biscuit. Biscuits microwaved so hard they needed to be cut with a knife. White gravy with no flavor, round sausage patties cut or torn into pieces. None of the food was hot. Jumbo chicken wings: honestly, they looked like a tall anoretic person. Somewhat large but very thin. Broasted my foot. The were deep fried I am sure. Dripping in oil, lightly browned soft skin with no dressing. You are given your choice of dipping sauce. The chicken itself did not seemed to be seasoned. When paying our check. The cashier offered us cookies. We declined. The cashier said the server would be spoken to immediately. I will not return to this restaurant. This is not my usual practice. However, so much was not good, I will not take another chance. read more

Friendly waitress. Loved our French toast. Kids loved their chocolate chip pancakes. Sausage was very good. Coffee was good too. No complains on the food or service. Could use new silverware, I must say tho. Mugs too. Place needs an update inside. Update: Decided to have breakfast again. Husband and I went in. Ordered steak, eggs, and potatoes w toast. Coffee. Well, the steak was super hard and rubbery. So rubbery my husband started choking on a piece. Scared the crap out of me. Waitress wasn't close by. Restaurant was kinda lonely. So that's was a scary not fun moment. The eggs where normal. And I did like their potatoes. Toast was a little on the burned side. Can't believe I have to be hit over the head with politics and religious issues just so I can eat bacon, toast, cold potatoes, and overcooked scrambled eggs. The pro-life signs are everywhere, which is a fine issue, but what does that have to do with a diner? The GIANT Trump flag was unsettling (especially as his attitude and policies ironically contradict the pro-life signs on the wall and logos on the menus), and the "I'm Conservative and we say Merry Christmas around here" sign in the cashier's window was overdone. Wishing somebody that should be perfectly acceptable but the militant attitude that it's the ONLY thing to wish people (which, among other faiths, doesn't respect Jewish people whose holiday comes first this year) is insulting. I've lived in the area for over 20 years and have always admired this building. I want the food to be good - and years ago it was! I would much rather give money to a local family business than a chain. We've been here twice in the past 5 years as I keep hoping things improve again. Years ago we vowed not to come back because of the high prices for breakfast. A few weeks ago we decided to give it a whirl for dinner while our daughter was at hockey practice nearby. Boy in sweatpants hosted us to our seat in the back of the museum looking interior. Lots to look at while waiting. At least it doesn't smell musty. I ordered a burger/fries, my husband the hot turkey dinner. Young waitress not friendly but shook it off. Food...$12 burger while likely came pre-packaged very well tasted like it. Small amount of fries. My husband thought everything on his plate came from a can. Turkey was cheap sliced kind with a not fresh taste to it. Potatoes tasted like they came from a box. Went in with extended family. EVERY meal was cold. Were so hungry that some of the people at cold. The other people sent back to be "Nuked" (yumyum). Still came back luke warm. Manager with the last name of Gorman treated my older dad with great disrespect after my dad had very politely told him that this has been an issue for years and that maybe he (the manager) wasn't aware as my dad did not know how long he had worked there. Very snidely the manager states, will I have been her 33 years, maybe that's not long enough. I have never been treated so rude. I stated that with a bill that large, my dad should be comp'd. If you're looking for good old fashioned diner type meals, kind of like what you might find in a small town up north, this is absolutely the place to be. Stopped with my Mom for early diner ( translates 4pm senior time). Her choice , not mine. Lot's of cars, but noticed only a few patrons. We walked in and saw two dirty tables that had dirty plates with partially eaten food left on the dishes. Smelled gross ! We saw only one waitress who was over-whelmed b/c she had to wait on customers in dining area & the drive-through customers, We waited over 10 minutes for the waitress to take our orders. Waited another 1/2 hour for the food. The grilled ham & cheese was over cooked. Onion rings tasted like they were cooked in old cooking oil. Yuk. My Mom's tuna sandwich sandwich was served on cold , however the bread was suppose to be toasted. It was cold also. $30 +tip for lousy food. Never again. This is a local favorite and it has good reason to be loved by all! The breakfast is always really good and the atmosphere isn't bad. It's definitely a family restaurant so make sure you expect to see lots of little kids. read more

Great for Sunday breakfast after church. Hot chocolate and malts are always worth the order. They make some good breakfast foods. It's a small town diner kind of place but most of the reviews seem to be expecting fine Italian cousine. Get an Italian omelette with some breakfast potatoes and a side of ranch or some French toast. I went to Gorman's Restaurant with my family after a friend highly recommended it. I have two kids (ages 2 & 4) and was in need of a family friendly restaurant. I was very elated with how incredible the staff was with our bunch. The waitresses and management were so friendly and my kids had a blast! The restaurant was very pleasant inside. We loved seeing the history of Lake Elmo creatively displayed throughout the restaurant. My kids had the BEST TIME playing "I-Spy" while we waited for our food. The food! Incredible! I had the turkey club (real turkey!) and a cup of chili (which was homemade and delicious) My husband had the "Elmo" burger and onion rings. He thought the burger was very tastey and not at all like fast food. It was HUGE! Our kids both had breakfast, which is served all day. Who doesn't like brinner? Our daughter had a pancake, which was "Mickey Mouse" shaped and our son had french toast. Both of our children ate ALL of their food (and that doesn't happen too often! The best part of Gorman's had to be the ICECREAM!!! I think there must be close to 30 different flavors to chose from AND you can pretty much have it every way it can possibly be served (cone, sundae, shakes, malts, etc,) My favorite icecream was "Java Chunk." My husband had a "Bear Creek Caramel" malt. Our kids had "Birthday Cake" and "Superman!" YUM! We have made many trips back to Gorman's and they staff and atmosphere is always positive, fun, and accomodating. If you want a family-friendly restaurant with GREAT home-cooked food, then Gorman's is the place! We loved it! read more

I am surprised at some of the other reviews of this restaurant. First of all, service is not only slow, but almost non-existant. It took about 10 minutes for the waitress to come to our table (even though the restaurant was about 1/4 full). The broccoli soup was like cement and the BLT was dry and unappetizing. I ordered a chicken melt. It was an extremely bland sandwich. The chicken was not seasoned enough and the bread was soggy. Even the cheese on the melt was tasteless. If nothing else, they need to revamp their kitchen staff (or give them new training on how to cook). The final capper was the owner (I think that was the owner) was using a drill next to our booth. He was drilling holes in the floor and doing some pounding with a hammer. Definitely not a restaurant that considers their customers first. read more

We stopped in for lunch. We ordered hot turkey sandwich. 35 min later it came, the diet pop had a horrible taste to it, the waitress just could not understand what was wrong. We said taste it and you will know. Then our dinner came, the corn was from a can, green beans were raw, the potatoes were instant, and the turkey had a funny taste. We took a couple of bites and then a little bug ran across my plate and we decided to leave. Worst ever, will never return and I suggest you don't either. Drove by this restaurant several times and wanted to give it a try. We stopped in for brunch. My husband had ham, eggs, and pancake. I had oatmeal with raisins and a side of fruit. Within an hour after eating we both began feeling sick. I ended up with severe stomach cramps and nausea resulting in diarrhea. We won't be going back to Gorman's. read more

Been going to this restaurant for years, my family is good friends with the owners but that wont exactly restrict me of my opinion. The food is good while not outstanding or great by any stretch of the imagination, the atmosphere is top notch with Minnesota memorabilia all over the walls and it's practically a museum which is pretty neat. It's located between Lake Elmo and Stillwater, which gives it a nice "farm feel" to it, definitely a cool place to sit in and watch storms roll in with the open fields. The service can be slow sometimes, while them being friendly. I would recommend it to anyone passing by but would let them know of not expecting excellence. If my experiences change at all I will come back to edit this reivew. read more

Incredible Chef's salad! Real turkey- yes! Wonderful soups nad sandwiches too. Comfortable and affordable.

decorated darling but it was the worst meal out i have had in years. slow service and our party of 10 were the only people int the entire restaurant!! i had the broasted chicken dinner and the chicken was stringy and appeared to not be real fresh. the coating was not good either. mashe potatoes were cold and the gravy was absolutely horrible!!!! although, at least my coleslaw was good. i ate that. would not recomend walking across the street to eat here!! not a good place . read more
