I originally walked in to spend $25, and left spending over $100 hahaha It was my first time visiting this shop, and was just curious to see what it was like inside. It was worth the ride over to check it out after work. They have some awesome items in the shop, along with a very wide variety of comics. The environment in that shop in general is just really cool and comfortable. To keep my review short, the gentleman with the long hair helped me out to figure out exactly what I was looking for and had a positive attitude the entire time. It's greatly appreciated dude! I rarely visit comic book shops, but I still consider myself a die-hard comic book geek. I found out about Gotham City Comics after meeting the co-owner Miguel down the street at Monsterland. It was the final week of Monsterland being open, so I dragged a friend in to see it and enjoy a last-chance beer in a bona fide Temple of Geekdom. Miguel was wearing a red Flash hoodie and having a beer at the bar with friends. After some casual banter, I knew I had found a kindred spirit and scholar of all things comic-booky. It was great fun to geek-out with someone so knowledgeable about the DC Universe (my particular obsession). Once I was clued into the existence of this enterprise that catered to comic-book fans and coffee drinkers, I had to check it out. I was not disappointed. I used Free Comic Book Day as an excuse to see Miguel again and he made my visit memorable. I stuck largely to the graphic novels and hardback books section, but ordered a coffee and perused the store. I settled on a great coffee-table book featuring legendary Superman comic-book cover art, but Miguel upsold me on a trade hardback of Identity Crisis, an entry in the DC Crisis portfolio I hadn't even been aware of. When it came time to pay, I outed myself as fanboy by revealing my Tyvek Superman wallet. This was not a huge novelty since it appeared that both Miguel and Jaime (who whipped me up a tasty iced vanilla latte) both sported Tyvek wallets. I guess it's not difficult to be out-geeked here! Love the vibe of this place. It's an indulgent little store that feels like the Bottle City of Kandor meets Comic-con. I shall return, and next time I may throw down for the kryptonite tchotchke! read more

I am not familiar with comics. I needed an Archie comic book, that I could cut up and make a comic collage for a themed cake.... I called this shop and asked if they had sone.. he said yes, BUT....since the next day was Halloween, they would be giving them out as treats. Now, I went to shop at 930 am, they did not open til 11 am. So I went to run errands, came back around 12 noon AND OMG...the streets were lined with trick-treaters of all ages and sizes.. the streets were crowded!!!! I parked, went into store and low and behold they were out of Archie's. However, they had a few newer Archie's, I picked one and started to pay.. the man behind the counter, GAVE me the comic No Charge!! WOWOWOWOWOW was all I could say, and THANK YOU!!! Now that's CUSTOMER SERVICE.. I will definitely recommend this shop to anyone!!! read more

My inner nerd has been UNLEASHED! Utilizing last weekend wisely, I spent my day here for a video game tournament. A portion of the store is dedicated to getting together and playing XBOX 360 with the best of basement dwellers around the valley. But that's just a fraction of what goes on. Even though I'm not into comics, I could see Gotham pulling me into them. So many Marvel and DC classics...I started actually wondered if Captain America would survive the war, or how Superman would fend off enemies without his powers. If you're a dork about Eastern entertainment, they've gotcha covered on Japanese video games, action figures, and Japanimation. In fact, they had an impressive library of soundtracks from various animes at deep discounts. Don't start thinking I'm a huge dork, because you don't have to be to love this place! Nourish your inner nerd...and order something from the coffee bar inside while you're at it. read more

Gotham Comics staff and owners are Great! They have all the new releases in Comics. If they don't have it they will get it the next week. Kevin and Miguel really know their comics too! I pull a wide variety of monthly books and each week they are pulled and ready for me (not missing anything). I'm also a Magic the Gathering player too. Gotham has a Great Friday Night Magic group. If your a standard player or a Drafter you got to check out Gotham. The players are fun yet challenging and Shannon does a Great job running each tournament. read more

Came in with my son to pick up some missing issues he was hoping to find of some story that I'm clueless of. As he was looking, I was eyeballing the books, posters and figures of things I never heard of. Oh yeah, they have the Superman, Batman, Marvel and DC stuff. So I had to buy a gift for my nephew who's a major comic book freak and a friend of mine recommended this place in Mesa. So I walk in the door and this is easily the coolest comic book place I've ever seen not that I go to a bunch of comic book places because honestly I never do. But damn, they had everything. I mean I'm sure that if my nephew came in here he would be in heaven and never want to leave. Very rude employees. You're better off going to literally any other comic book store.

Waited patiently for product availability, drove out of our way once it arrived. Was told only one per person, so I gathered all who wanted product as well. Once we got to store was only able to buy one total, not one per person. All played and wanted own set. To add insult to injury, relative who frequents store was also told was unable to purchase because we already did and related, which does not make any sense. Truly unfair as each was willing to pay price increase from original quoted price ( over 20 plus dollars) and with gas also rising this is a horrible way to take advantage Of customers who could bring business in. Guess this place is not welcoming to new customers so unless your in and established with this shop looks like you are out of luck in finding a good shop for collectibles. read more

This is a great little comic book store. But they don't just have comics. They have action figures, collectables, and rare items. I can't forget the awesome art that covers the back of the building. It's amazing and really well done! It's a really neat place to look around in. The owner is also very nice. As far as comic stores in the Mesa area go, this is my absolute favorite place. Despite the name, Gotham City Comics carries much more than just DC merch. The store is well-stocked with back issues, trade paperbacks, and action figures, being one of the few places where I can reliably get Alien/Predator figs. What makes Gotham City Comics stand out is the exceptional customer service. Shoutout to Miguel, who helped me immensely in finding some HALO trade paperbacks. Overall, the store has a nice atmosphere, and the owners utilize their store space well- although their inventory is big, it doesn't feel cramped or claustrophobic as a smaller store would. If you're looking for a store that has plenty of comics, graphic novels, manga, figures, pop vinyls, board games, and more, than this is definitely a place to check out. One thing to point out is that they no longer sell coffee- the stand has since been taken out. i believe they still sell beverages like soft drinks though. read more

This is a really awesome comic/gaming store! I've been going regularly and will continue to. I can't really speak to the comic or collectible selection, because I come for the Magic: the Gathering events. They seem to have all the normal MTG stuff and good prices. I also like that they have fun drinks like coffee and Italian soda, and T-Shirts and stuff. I've been to Friday Night Magic events here a few times, which has been really fun. It's a smaller crowd than at other FNM places. People here are way less intense too. More girls, younger people, and newer players. WAY less intimidating than some other nerd stores I've done it at, notably Gamers Inn. XD The staff here is super nice. They seem to try to remember names and stuff, and go out of their way to make it an awesome experience. I would highly recommend this place for someone wanting to get into MTG, or play without the really intense players. read more

If you're into comics, this is the place to geek out! First of all, the employees are always so nice and in the know. While we looked out of place, they didn't make us feel that way at all. I was interested in something my little cutie pie could get into and we were showed the stacks of comics for little ones. In front of me lined TMNT, My Little Pony, Brats, Sponge Bob, Sonic, etc. My little cutie pie picked Sonic. There is a snack and coffee bar inside--tables and chairs in the back of the store. I saw a couple of small groups playing cards. I take that they don't mind people hanging out and relaxing in there. One time, there was a couple of animators who can turn you into a hero or heroine of your choice. If I ever see that again, I'd have them do my little cutie pie. Even if he tells me he is not into super heroes, he'd enjoy a caricature of himself. My hubby and I snicker as I hold up a drawing of a comic heroine with 38"-18"-36" stats busting out of her costume with come hither look all nipply. I forgot this is also a haven for a young man's fantasy. Worth coming in to browse around! read more

What a charming, welcoming comic book store! My previous experience with comic book stores was only what I saw on the Big Bang Theory, so I wasn't sure what to expect when I was on my quest to pick up the new Rick & Morty comic books (if you want to laugh your ass off- check out the tv show Rick & Morty) I called GCCC and checked to see if they had what I was looking for. I received Prompt, super helpful information and the guy even agreed to hold onto my items so I could pick them up that night, and so they wouldn't be purchased by someone else prior to my arrival. When I arrived at GCCC it was a weird scene outside. I didn't know this, but the Second Friday in Mesa is super happening, with live music, vendors, you name it. Picture Phx's first Friday's before it got huge and sucked. Parking is either on the street or a huge lot behind the building. As I parked and walked up to the store. I saw a large crowd of kids in COSplay gear having fun, which I thought was cool for them. Walking into GCCC you think you could be on a movie set. There are people playing board games, trading comics and cards- arguing what trades are fair, you name it. I honestly had no idea what the hell was happening, but I did know people were happy and joyous- and I knew GCCC was a great spot. A really nice guy helped me find my comic books and during the time he pulled up my items, teens would come up to him and consult if a trade was good or not, etc. really cool. I got my items and was told to head to the front of the store where I met Jaime, who rang me up. He explained you can sign up for your favorite items so the day they arrive you can pick them up. Super cool. Well done GCCC, you have a fan for life! read more

I love comic book shops. Love them simply for what they sell. But there's nothing better then finding a comic shop with the perfect ambience. This is not that shop. I've stopped here five times over the past year and every single time I was treated like the employees would rather continue to have conversations with each other then at least act like I could be a potential buying customer. I tried the coffee but it was really bland. I was thinking of at least going to this shop as a last resort location when I couldn't find the books I wanted elsewhere but changed my mind after the last visit. I witnessed two of the employees being so rude to these two old ladies who were asking about comics and batman. It's weird cause I have a couple friends who say they dig this shop, their the reason I visited, but wow I don't plan to go back. read more

Hands down, best comic book store in town. It doesn't get any better than this. The owners are awesome. They have always been incredibly welcoming from the first time we walked in the door. They make the time to chat about anything and everything--Doctor Who, X Men, Avengers, Star Wars, Star Trek... they are knowledgeable and they love to socialize. They have put comics into my hands that I never thought I would have liked, and they were right. And it was so sweet. The store is exactly what I want a place to be--comic shop meets coffee store meets gathering place meets gaming place meets Doctor Who Marathon movie theatre. It's got a cozy feeling without being too crowded. The couches are wicked comfortable; you can slouch down into one with a comic book in your hands, and the owners encourage such behavior. They also have a TV that often has tv episodes or movies playing, and a room in back for console gaming. And a great, industrial-batman themed bathroom. Their mini coffee shop sells chai, coffee, italian sodas, and other cold drinks. Also snacks. And they have wifi. You could literally (and I have been tempted) spend the entire day there, with tons of different activities planned. A lot like when you were a kid and had friends who went to daycare during the summer, and they got to go on a field trip every day. The weekends are kind of like that--adult fandom daycare. Sign me up. They have Doctor Who Tuesday nights, where they show two episodes (new and classic or documentary of DW). They often have something (or multiple somethings) going on during the weekends. Today it was Yo-Yo demonstrations, then Pokemon, then gaming (I forget). They'll be at PHX Comic-con. They should be everywhere, all the time. Visit them and say hi, and ask about the new Star Trek movie, DW theories about Clara, or what they think about JJ Abrams doing Star Trek. Or the new Iron Man III. All of them will get you a long, spirited conversation. And I love it. read more

This place is great. I don't know much about comics but the staff and the customers were extremely friendly and helpful. They don't pressure you to buy anything and have couches and seating for you to hang out to take a read. They also have amazing espresso. This was a surprise to me how good there coffee was. I really enjoyed being able to thumb thru the comics while sipping on my amazing expresso. Im excited to crack into some of the comics and graphic novels I purchased. The best comic book shop in the Valley, hands down. The owners and staff are super knowledgeable and friendly. They keep realistic hours for the Valley (i.e. open til late so I can get my books and collectibles after dark and not have to drive in the oppressive summer weather). Their snack bar makes great coffee and slushee drinks. They buy art from local artists to sell in the stores and have tons of events to make the place a social hub, whether its classic wrestling, Doctor Who nights or collectible card games. Plus they have lots of local and celebrated national artists here on a monthly basis with their 2nd Friday nights. All in all a great venue with a rich selection of collectibles. This place is dope. The staff is super friendly and helpful and the coffee is good. Plus, importantly, they have tons of sweet comics, graphic novels, and collectibles. I was just visiting town but I could see they had a cool back section for group viewings and gaming. Before grabbing my drink it was cool browsing their goods too. If there's one "bad" thing (that's not really bad) it's that the sitting section isn't that great for working or reading. They have a few recliners and tables up front but don't go in expecting a coffee shop set up. This is definitely a comic book shop first and foremost that sells coffee and espressos. I came in just to check it out and do some work on my computer. It worked for me on my macbook, but it may not work for all. Regardless, definitely worth a visit just to pick up a solid coffee drink and a cool comic. read more

I've been to a lot of comic book shops in my life and I can easily say this is by far the best comic shop thus far. From the moment you walk in, the staff greets with a warm welcome, to the time that you leave after shaking your hand and sending you back out into the world better equipped to "geek out". The inventory is most impressive and anything that you can't find? Well, just ask the knowledgeable staff and they will be happy to help you in your quest to find that particular rarity that you're after. Need a drink? They've got that too, coffee, slushies, soda etc. The lounge area is by far one of the best attributes in the store, if you have some time, sit down and unwind reading a few new titles, you just might find a new line for yourself to enjoy! I have recently been around the Phoenix metro area checking out comic book stores and this one is the best I have seen so far. Really clean and spacious while having their comics organized extremely well. The biggest plus is their selection of older comics. I have been buying up some Amazing Spider-Mans and most other stores have very few if any. Gotham has a ton of Bronze/Copper Age Spideys and their wall with the more sought after issues had several great ones too. Oh yeah the pricing was very good and the staff extremely helpful and friendly. Even talked to me about the grading of comics/sports cards. Will definitely be checking out Gotham again! read more

What a cool location. I've never been to this part of Mesa and I really liked the vibe here. The store itself is nice when you walk in. It's an open floor plan with a nice setup in the back with tables that I assume are used for gaming. This place has sections which I like. Toys, comics, games etc. it's easy to navigate most of it. The tables with the back issue comics are poorly marked though. Very few dividers and the lower shelves are really awkward to browse too. Again I wasn't greeted when I walked in. I spent 10 minutes or so in the store looking at comics and still got nothing while Jaime the clerk talked to friends and they were all having a great time. Finally as I was close to walking out Jaime asked if I had questions and immediately he became helpful, professional and really friendly. It turns out they didn't have what I was looking for, but he offered to take my info and call me if he came across it. That was awesome! My first impression wasn't very good, but Jaime turned it around for me. I would ask why they have some books hung up on the wall when they aren't all that special or valuable, or how anyone is supposed to see the prices on said books with those awful orange/red stickers and black ink? I was squinting and straining so hard just to see anything. The place isn't perfect, but overall it was decent. If I lived in the area I'd likely come back to check in on them. read more

This is THE place to go if you're a newbie or shopping for a friend or browsing for a tangentially related hobby. Ordinarily, when I go to a single-hobby shop in the hope of scoring a little something for my weird dollhouses, I get The Sneer because I'm buying only a couple fat quarters of fabric or one skein of yarn or whatever. Not at Gotham City! There is no sneer at Gotham City unless it's part of the comic-book character's official persona. The clerks got totally into what I was trying to accomplish and the shopping trip ended up with my happily buying more than I'd strictly intended to and taking various flyers for events. They showed me things; they explained things; they gave me not the slightest trouble over not really being a fan of any of the major franchises. As a result, I have all sorts of neat stuff in the under $10 range, plus a general idea of what more I could get and how and when. Also, my $1 Spiderman figure from a flea market is moving up from house-sitting to having his own house so he can collect the things that aren't right for the 1:6 people or for the hipster ST:TNG couple. Also, from a prior (very pleasant) visit, I know I can get coffee and cold drinks, including an Italian soda that looks like green slime. There are days when an ice-cold, fruit-flavored glass of green slime is what hits the spot. read more

Hands down the Best coffee I've ever had! I know, strange for a comic book store. Seriously, stop in and try the coffee, it will ruin all other coffee for you! This is also an amazing comic book store. It's clean, inviting, fairly priced, lots of Doctor Who merchandise and they even have Doctor Who night every Tuesday from 6 to 9! The back has an AMAZING game room. A row of cumfy chairs and a row of TVs where you can hang out and play all the newest games online or off. The owners are very nice and very welcoming. This was AWESOME! The staff treated me like a lifelong customer even though it was only my 2nd visit. I'm from our if state but they definitely made me feel at home. The staff really knew their stuff and gave me some great recommendations. The atmosphere was great, no matter the age group. It also didn't matter how much of a fan/nerd/fanboy you are or if you're just a casual fan or shopping for a gift. Big thanks to the owners who ate really cool but also/especially Jaime who remembered me & was super nice/cool/hilarious. The only negative was the new comics section but that was due to some sort of anomaly due to the holidays. I can't comment on the coffee; I didn't order one. I know that seems like I'm going overboard, but I've worked in comics before and thus I can appreciate how well run this place is. Strongest recommendation to check this place out! read more
