[[HIGHLIGHT]]Stepping into Gottlieb's was such a cool, transporting experience.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]I (and other clearly non-Jewish) patrons were in flagrant violation of the dress code not allowing shorts, but no one called us out or made us feel unwelcome.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Along the walls are hooks for coats and purses and shelves for hats. Sitting at the edge of the Orthodox Jewish community in Williamsburg, it still draws in a good number of non-Jews. The menu is fairly typical of Ashkenazi Jewish fair, with even some Chinese noodles and egg rolls from what I could gather. A lot of the food looks has been sitting out, but most of it is still tasty after being microwaved. The latkes were more cakey with too much flour and not enough potato in the composition. That was a letdown, but the coleslaw and kugel were solid. My kids also liked the goulash, which was tasty and flavorful, as well as the pastrami sandwich. As expected with kosher food, the prices were fair given the portions. But we came more for the experience than to titillate our taste buds. read more

I loved just about everything about this place. It's a neighborhood deli, no fluff, no gastro tourists taking selfies and videos with their food, fairly reasonable as Kosher restaurants go, and best of all the food was scratch made, and reminded me of my Grandma and the years I got sent to an Orthodox day camp, plus there was plenty of on - street parking. Chicken soup, plain but not out of a can, so kudos on that. Stuffed, grilled kishke with beef gravy that didn't come from a can, also great. Melt in your mouth Hungarian Goulash and Chicken Paprikash, yum. Noodles with cabbage? Fantastic! Noodle Kugel? I think mine is the best, so they had a high bar to clear, it was still dense and delicious. I haven't had a vegetable cutlet in years, the ones I remember were golden, theirs's a little scorched, dark brown, yet still delicious. Our waiter and the counterman were about as sweet as could be. NYC has gone from something like 600 Losher delis in the 60s to about 6 in 2026, most of them very Disneyfied, Gottlieb's is a time capsule from a bygone era and well worth the trip. First time eating at Gottlieb's. I only eat kosher meat, but I didn't grow up in NY and had never been to this classic, kosher NY deli. The potato knish could have been good if it hadn't been microwaved to heat it, leaving it strangely chewy. The corned beef and pastrami sandwich on "rye" that we shared, tasted suspiciously like white bread with a touch of rye (Korn's?). It was fresh because it was just out of the bag, but flavorless. Thousand island dressing and mustard are offered in large plastic squirt bottles (my pet peeve -- I find those really unappetizing). The deli meat was fine but nothing special, fairly bland. The waiter gave us two, very flimsy, little plastic cups to pour our Snapple into. I thought about ordering something else but wasn't tempted. Maybe it's more of a take-out place. Sorry, but I've eaten at a lot of kosher deli's across the country over a few decades, and never encountered one that didn't offer lox. So, the rating started at a 1. Since we walked about a mile from the L station in Williamsburg, we capitulated and just stayed rather than walking out. But there was nothing else about the place that added any stars. The overall food was meh, and the service, while friendly, was just not attentive. We went through the whole meal without the staff ever knowing if we wanted anything but water to drink - because a) they didn't ask, and b) they didn't stick around long enough for us to add drinks to our meal order. Oh well - their loss of my money.... And, speaking of money, the meal was way overpriced for what we got. Over a hundred dollars for four mediocre sandwiches. Amazing setting with overpriced and dry sandwiches. The coke bottle shelf over the beverage fridge, the dish of pickles brought out immediately to your table, and handwritten menu signs at the counter create a great foundation for a classic dining experience, but unfortunately the food lacked flavor and was incredibly inflated in price. It was $27 for an "extra large" brisket sandwich that was at best a medium in size. Their best is definitely the pastrami, but even that doesn't have that dreamy flavor you attribute to the kosher deli pastramis of NYC. read more

Was in the hood so I yelped this place; had decent reviews so we stopped in; 1st off good luck finding a parking spot; had to double park n leave the wife in the car; no big deal..... I ordered three hot Pastrami's on rye; here's where I noticed that maybe I choose the wrong place; the deli man pulls out a cold piece of Pastrami from the Refridge; then he puts it on the slicer n starts slicing very thin which I have no complaints about; then he puts the meat in a lil metal bowl n weighs it; When he got his desired weight which a didn't get to see he then puts the bowl in their Pastrami steam box....... so three bowls in and eight minutes later hot Pastrami; I had him top each sandwich with russian dressing that's what we like; 3 Pastrami @ 13.50; they give you plenty of pickles; also had to get three Dr Brown Black Cherry Soda's !!!!! Went back to the car to chow down; the Pastrami was good not to fatty n not too lean; had a decent taste; the amount of meat was like 1/4 of what Katz's n Sarges deli puts on.... hence the low price @ 13.50 a sandwich; I enjoyed it but the wife thought the Pastrami was too mushy with no real bark / seasoning you know that good black stuff!! As old-school as it gets! A bunch of grizzled cooks preparing all the classics. My dining companions had told me this was open for about 60 years. I can tell they've got a strong following by the branding of the product and the demeanor of the workers. They are welcoming and kind to newbies like myself. They've got frozen dinners you can take to-go! I think they even ship some out. I'm not much of a soup guy, but we ordered chicken soup with matzo. The matzo was very dense, and this felt heavier than a soup would normally be, but it was good. I appreciated that it wasn't absolutely loaded with sodium, something they more than made up for with generous sides of pickles. I readily admit I'm no expert on these foods, but can say this is a can't-miss for anyone with some time to spare in this hood. read more

Williamsburg is its own little world; we all know that. Gottlieb's is an old school Ashkenazi delicatessen in a very old school part of town. (It is not for the faint of heart, nor for anyone who isn't prepared to see Williamsburg at its most Hasidic.) Don't go in expecting glam. Seriously. You're in the wrong place if that's your cup of tea. But if you're craving succulent pastrami, freshly sautéed liver, tender whitefish, flaky knishes, sweet kugels, rich and filling kasha varnishkes, crispy latkes, killer cholent, dense and flavorful matzo balls, and savory tsimmes, you've certainly come to the right place. The website doesn't always work, so be advised in advance. And ladies and gentlemen alike, please dress modestly if you're going. (Just be cognizant of where you are. It's common decency and good manners. It just IS. You're in a heavily uber-Orthodox part of the city, and many of the Satmar locals are VERY persnickety about modest apparel. Just be nice whether you agree with them or not, mmmkay? You're just here to eat freakin' lunch, for Pete's sake.) Do yourself a huge favor and listen to the staff if you need help ordering. Hadn't been here in several years. Came again to see if I remembered it correctly. The answer is yes: this is some of the most lackluster Ashki food ever, and I say this as a major Ashki food fan, having grown up eating tons of it. Schnitzel, meh (The waiter double checked with me to confirm I knew what schnitzel was? Was it because I was a woman wearing pants/obviously not Orthodox? It was weird). Yerushalmi kugel, meh. Grilled veggies: grey and mushy. Only exception was the grilled kishke: it was actually AMAZING. Truly wish I could find a good old school Ashki restaurant/deli, because this ain't it. This may have been the worst sandwich i've ever been served in my life. A 10 year old could make a better sandwich. Just two pieces of thin, weak rye with holes and a moderate portion of meat that I couldn't pick up without it falling apart? No lettuce, tomato, or even a toothpick to hold it together? My kid got "chicken nuggets" which were overcooked, oily, breaded pieces of chicken that were unedible and soggy fries. The other people eating had equally simple and insufficient sandwiches. But to experience gottliebs the real way you have to turn to your right and take a seat and there you will be greeted by Yitzchok, now yitzchok is the waiter and trademark of this place, his friendly and helpful personality adds a charm to this old rundown place and he does everything old school, from scribbling down your receipt on a old ticket book to remembering all your old silly jokes, oh and about the décor, that pretty much looks like it hasn't been updated in the last 60 years either, but when you come to gottliebs you come for the food not for the décor.... So we sit down and Yitzchok comes over and starts the usual chit chat and I mention that I used to come as a child here every Friday with my father (Story of like 15-20 years ago) and we would get the famous chulent a and Grilled kishka with gravy, and my stomach starts rumbling and begging for some good old chulent, so we order the Chulent*, Grilled Kishka**, Yaptchik*** and Pitcha**** (Some call it gala..) and under a minute Yitzchok is back with our order, including the usual bread and sour pickles (I could eat those pickled goodness all day!) and Boy oh boy was that good!!! The real good old taste of homemade chulent is simply amazing and you won't find it better at any other place! period. So after indulging with all the delicious stuff I call up Yitzchok and tell him that I'll go for another round of Chulent (If you didn't see my profile, I'm in love with this dish...) and he said, "for over 20 years you come here for chulent, the 2nd round is on the house! and that's the service that makes us all come back here...... Looking forward for my next meal here.... ------------------------------------------------------------------- Disclaimer: I stole this stars idea from Peter D *Chulent is a Hungarian dish somewhat similar to Chili with beef, It consist of mixture of Kidney beans, navy beans, cranberry beans and barley slow cooked for 24-48 houers with Flanken meat and marrow bones. **Kishka is basically a dough dish made out of flour, eggs, spices and is usually cooked in the same slow cooker as the Chulent. ***Yaptchik is potato kugel (the description for that I'll leave for another time)with tidbits of beef baked overnight. ****Pitcha / Galla is not for the faint of heart, it is water cooked for like 8 hours with chicken and beef bones and then refrigerated and as a result this super fatty mixture turns into a Jello textured dish and sprinkled on top is garlic and various spices for flavor. We loved Gottlieb's! The best kosher food I've ever had, and I'm not exaggerating. haha The corned beef roll was out-of-this-world, mnnn having flashbacks :) The pickles were amazing as well. And lastly, the restaurant had a great vibe. So Hasidic Jewish(!!) which i'm fascinated with. The men behind the counter seemed irked by our presence (a Brooklyn tour) at first, but I think they could tell I was nice and after a while warmed up. After reading various reviews and trying dozens of dishes with my jewish and gentile friends, I can offer the following unbiased observations; Cleanliness continues to improve at this pre-cooked take-out cafeteria style 50 seat dining room. NYC is spoiled by world class breads and cured meats which you won't find at any budget restaurant like this. If you wanted Chinese food, then why would you buy it in south Williamsburg? I'm in a position to compare Gottlieb's dishes to the authentic Hungarian, Polish, and Yemenite restaurant class sources these recipes historically originated.
