SOLID KOSHER TEXAS STYLE BBQ IN CROWN HEIGHTS Postmaster Izzy Eidelman is truly on to something here. His take on Texas style BBQ doesn't miss the mark. It's giving all the smoke necessary to capture the BBQ flavor. It's a great option for those who don't eat pork but lacks some of the traditional Southern side options due to kosher restrictions. Brisket has become the hallmark BBQ disk and Izzy's brisket is on the fatty side with good flavor throughout which can be attributed to the 18 hours of prep time. Heads up: half a pound of brisket equals 2-3 pieces. Beef ribs are another must try option that passes the Texas test. I was glad to see that they added a Taqueria section to their menu on my return trip. I have to try their tacos on my next trip along with their signature purple coleslaw that I have often left untouched on my plate. read more

This place was open on thanksgiving! We were a party of 5 who came around 8 pm. We were able to eat in and got lucky with a table that sat us just fine. They were so friendly and also gave us a sample of pastrami. The pastrami was soft and very yummy. The sandwich was juicy and tasted good. Our favorite was the cholent! It was so hearty, had a big chunk of beef, and comforting. The yapchik was salty and a bit too dry. We added ketchup to cut the saltiness. Overall, cool spot and good experience. read more

Sticky tables with trays of food were a bit of a deterrent but as one must do for treasure, I kept my eye on the prize. With limited drink options I tried my first Montauk beer (wave chaser) and really enjoyed it. It's not as bitter as I'd like from my IPAs but it was definitely something I'd get moving forward. The price may seem hella steep but it's compared to any other BBQ joint but actually delivers on moisture and flavor. The back ribs looked like a rip off from its initial appearance however once you got down and dirty the meat just kept coming (very little fat). The only minor complaint I have, with all meat joints, is the delicious top layer did not penetrate into the meat. However the meat was so moist and the flavor of the cow really shined through once the bbq sauce was eaten. If you do not like a pound of bbq sauce (like me) be sure to ask for the extra obligatory sauce not be added. Luckily the cashier gathered from my partners vibe we did not want extra sauce. The pickled slaw (pink) was sour and bland, I didn't care for it one bit. The pickles were everything but didn't go with the ribs at all so I at them with my burger. The Texas burger was cooked properly and as ordered (medium. Some gouda would have been killer). It was so juicy and felt like I was eating a sloppy joe. No complaints here because I love sloppy burgers, if they are finger licking good. Although the mx street corn was not legit (I understand why) the sauce was tasty and very much needed as the corn had no flavor (sweet or otherwise). The creamy slaw was slight salty but went well with the ribs. (The tables were cleaned off about 45mins later once the place started to get really packed and it was the only table left). Overall this is definitely worth a trek from way yonder. When my burger cravings takes over I'll be here. Even though they do not serve Mac and cheese (I understand but lame af. This place is such a joy. The focus is food, great KOSHER food. The smoked brisket is flavorful and moist. The BBQ pulled beef is tender and perfectly seasoned. Six of us stopped by last night. I ordered the smoked brisket salad off Uber Eats, and it was DELICIOUS. The salad was also very fresh and colorful. I just wish they gave more dressing. Also, the brisket is incredibly fatty ... This is the Best meat I've ever had (kosher / non kosher) we tried a bit of everything. The brisket is unbelievable. It's $70/ pound but it's worth every penny. The ambiance is a hole in the wall type place, but you can take it to go or eat there... I brought some home for my husband and found myself going to Brooklyn again to pick more up. There is virtually no service although it's a dine in restaurant with places for you to sit. A fall from grace, Izzy's used to be one of my favorite BBQ places in NYC. My last visit was a disappointment. I went around 1pm on a Sunday and they didn't have pastrami or any beef ribs. I decided to try the lamb ribs, while flavorful the serving was mainly fat and bone. It barely fed one person, and was overlooked. On previous visits over the last 5 years, I have noted the brisket being some of the best in NYC. This visit it didn't hold up. The meat while flavorful and Smokey was dry. The sides were nothing special. Bland coke slaw, boring ribs and standard pickles. I will not be returning to Izzys any time soon. It appears with all the expansion, Miami and Upper West, the quality and even availability of product suffered. read more

Hot dayam. This is some mighty fine BBQ. Eating empanadas in a kosher restaurant that smokes meats in the style of central Texas deep in the heart of Crown Heights - only in Brooklyn baby! This place came on my radar after seeing the glowing review from fellow Yelper Rebecca A. On a quest to try all the best BBQ in NYC, it's been sitting in my bookmarks, but after Izzy took home the crown at Brisket King NYC 2017 I thought it was finally time to make the trek and try for myself. There were two of us, and we tried to sample as much of the menu as we could. We ended up getting one beef rib (1.5lbs at $38/lb), 1/2 lb brisket ($40/lb), and a sausage. I really wanted to try the turkey, but they weren't serving it that day :( I asked for the brisket to be sliced from the more fatty/moist portion, and they gladly obliged. For the appetizers, we got some empanadas because it looked like a lot of the other patrons were getting them, and also some extra pickles. Also got some beans. The place is counter service, and after your meats are prepared, they'll call out your name and bring them out. So here's the verdict: Brisket: Wow. This is freaking legit. Visually appeared perfect. Sliced from the portion of the brisket I specifically asked for. Beautiful peppery bark, caramel-ly/sticky to the touch, and slightly sweet. Gorgeous pink smoke ring. Fat was rendered just right, the meat was limp in the hand but held together. No knife needed on this brisket - completely melts in your mouth. Good smokey flavor. Very enjoyable without the sauce, although it's not bad with the strip of sauce they give you on the platter. A++ Beef rib: Monstrous. We got a 1.5 pounder, so not cheap either. The meat was super tender, just the right amount of fat. Felt amazing in the mouth, nice peppery flavor, although smoke was harder to taste. Decent on its own, but to me the rib tasted better with the sauce. Not the best I've had, but definitely respectable. Pickles: I'm addicted to their pickles. Sweet+sour, but has this finish that reminds me of Indian food? Not sure what it is, but I'm guessing maybe it's the coriander? Regardless they are amazing, and a great side to enjoy with your meats. Cole slaw: Typical red cabbage slaw, sweet vinegar based. A side is given with each order of meat. Beans: They don't look like much, but surprisingly they were quite good. There's a spicy finish that I really loved. Empanadas: I can see why everyone in the restaurant was ordering them. Great appetizer, and pairs well with this horseradish based sauce they give you with it. Hot crispy skin with what tastes like shredded beef inside. In addition to the food, service was so friendly. When I walked in, it was pretty obvious that I probably didn't fit their typical clientele profile, but everyone was sooo nice. After hearing that I came from Texas, they dropped by multiple times to see what I thought about their meats. It's obvious they take extreme pride with what their smoking, and stand by their product - with good reason. This place is a must-try if you're a BBQ lover, regardless if you eat kosher or not. The price is not cheap (we paid close to $120 between the two of us), but I still highly recommend it. The meat is prepared kosher, so they have a process where they have to remove all the blood from the meat which makes the process more involved to prepare. All in all, this brisket is grand champion BBQ, and Texas would be proud. TL, DR: - Brisket is some of the best you will find in New York - Be prepared to spend, but the meat is all kosher read more

I got the fatty kind because I think fat adds extra flavor, but next time, I plan on ordering the lean brisket, as there is still a flavorful amount of fat on it. I took 4 friends and we ordered ribs(we later find out it's 1 rib) and some tri tip that was only enough for 2 people. The meats were extremely dry! the baked beans also dry, vegetables did not look appetizing they were over steamed and goey. Mashed potatoes were watery. Everything was a mess and not to Mention you serve yourself . FOR $190.00 BILL I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO SERVE MYSELF, especially not terrible food. If you're craving meat this is your place! I've tried their fried chicken sandwich which is huge!!!!!! It's really good but I think next time I would ask for no honey on the chicken. It made it too sweet for me. But the sandwich comes with two huge pieces of friend chicken. I really like their purple cabbage side. They don't always have rack of lamb but if they do, it's not bad. A little too much fat for me. I've recently tried their pecan pie which was not bad. Wish it was served not in a plastic container after it was heated. But I asked for a paper plate so was good to go. It was warm on the top but not throughout. Would have been even more delish if it was warm throughout! Place can get super packed. As someone who occasionally goes to kosher restaurants to accommodate friends and family, but still eats treyf, I can generally tell you a kosher meat restaurant isn't as good as a non-kosher one. But, hearing the fascinating story of this place, I knew I had to try it. Can one study under the best pitmasters, never try their food, and recreate it well AND kosher? Brisket had the right amount of marbling to keep the meat soft and firm all in one bite; the Dino Rib was perfectly mouthwatering with the perfect amount of course peppercorn crust; Burnt Ends were nuggets of smokey goodness; the Burger was a prefect med rare deliciousness of 2 different cuts of beef brought together to make the juiciest patty between a sliced bun and the house cured veal bacon was addicting!! The fried chicken sandwich....holy...no words. It's a must MUST order with whatever else you get. Accompanying our meal was the large baked sweet potato covered in a what I think was pecans and brown sugar. Great flavor combo just wished the nuts were toasted a bit more. The best part about this place is that it's kosher. If you're keeping kosher, it's obvious that this is one of the better places to eat in Brooklyn. However, if you don't keep kosher, then it may not be worth it. It depends on what day you go, which is their biggest problem: consistency. Sometimes they're out of items, which is more understandable than other things. What's not understandable is why their food is inconsistent. Sometimes you go and it's the best BBQ. You understand the training that went in behind it and you understand the hype. If you go on a day where it's not living up to hype, then you get what I got today. It depends how much you want to take a gamble that day. I love brisket. I make brisket myself. Today I got the most bland and dry brisket I think possible. For having so much fat on it, and I don't even prefer fatty brisket, I prefer first cut and lean, it was incredibly dry. I'm not sure how you can have each slice of brisket being half fat and half dry meat. The bigger problem behind how dry it was is that it was basically unseasoned. If you get a piece at the end, then you'll taste that they used pepper. But if you want any sauce, salt, garlic, onion, hot sauce, or anything else, then you have to put it on yourself. I got a half pound of brisket, slaw, and pickles. I'm also not entirely sure that they seasoned the slaw? I don't even think the slaw this time was pickled? It left me with a lot of questions. Basically, i've eaten here many times.If you're willing to take the gamble, then it might be really good. But, if it misses the mark, which is about half of the time, then it is not worth it. It is simply overpriced and not seasoned. The good thing is they have a great selection of drinks, so maybe you can get drunk and it'll be a little bit better. I live very nearby and the meat is kosher, so I will return and give it another shot. We heard so much about it, we had to try it. Given COVID, abs the time of our arrival it was packed. We were able to sit ourselves right away. We ordered the lamb ribs, which came as a whole rack. We had also the brisket, a beef rib and the pulled beef fries. Everything was great. The brisket was avid rough, we assume is bc of the kosher process that drains all the liquids out. My favorite was the lamb. It was melting and falling of the rack, delicious and nit too salty, as the kosher process adding salt. The pulled beef was ok. The fries were crispy and perfect but they put a Ketchup-based sauce to it that really ruined it for us. The meats came with pickles and coleslaw that were delicious. Only beer for alcoholic beverages and other soft drinks was also disappointing. Super casual place, the tabletops were paper and we had to ask to replace it or we would be dinning on the leftovers crumbs of the previous patrons. read more

Delicious barbecue! This is a small restaurant but the food is DELICIOUS! I came here with some friends and we all ended up eating the brisket sandwich. It comes STUFFED with brisket which is moist, flavorful and delicious. The bun is chewy and the cole slaw and pickle in the sandwich is the perfect balance between meat and carbs. I also had the candies sweet potato which was different from what I envisioned. Anyway, it's a baked sweet potato smothered in maple syrup and pecans. The pecans added a nice touch however, it was a bit on the sweeter side so it felt like a dessert rather than a side dish. Anyway, I couldn't finish my food because the portions are huge. great brisket, short menu, very high prices, basically no service i came here for a small dinner with my girlfriend and friends. the menu is short and simple, meat, some sides, and different combinations of meat (sandwiches, fries, etc.). the prices are incredibly high, perhaps the highest i have seen for bbq, but i suppose this is the cost of kosher meat that most jewish and israeli restaurants in nyc cannot justify paying for. there is basically no service. you order at the counter and the staff were very unclear about where we should sit or whether someone was going to bring us the food (they did). water is in plastic cups filled up by a sink next to the register and all the utensils are plastic. the beer was very expensive. the food was delicious. we ordered brisket, corn, smoked beans, and got pickles and slaw on the side. everything was really good; most surprisingly, the corn which was sweeter than i would have expected for this time of year in new york. like the rest of the food, the corn (a cob of corn topped with spiced mayo) was astronomically overpriced. i cannot for the life of me understand why. read more
