A throwback kind of Italian Restaurant... Well I've been to newer one in Jersey City years ago, now the original one. This GP's has been at this location since 1977. You can definitely tell, with those black & white photos when entering the bar of celebrities that have frequented this establishment over the years. Dining area is in the back. Dimly lit makes for a intimate dining experience. Called first just to make sure about reservations, but honestly probably not needed during the week. But do call first to check. Service was impeccable by our waiter Joe. An older gentleman whose been here since shortly after GP's moved to this address. We started off with a carafe of house wine. While noshing on there signature meatballs appetizer. These aren't your grandmothers meatballs. They only come with 2 and that's all you'll need. Make sure to have that warm Italian bread to sop up that marinara sauce. Entrees... Veal Saltimbocca for the Mrs. I ordered off the daily specials menu & got shrimp with rigatoni. It was accompanied by a mixture of broccoli rabe, sun dried tomatoes & sausage. So good. Prices are pretty reasonable. Most entrees will run between 20- 25 a pop and portions are very large. When you think family, old school Italian restaurant, this is the place you are thinking of. My husband and I have been to GP's in JC many times, but decided to check out the original GP's. It was definitely not what I was expecting - but in a good way. We were seated immediately in a booth and served a salad and bread. The salad was nicely dressed and the bread was hot. My husband decided to order himself a starter of meatballs and garlic bread for the table. The garlic bread so good and the meatballs were huge! For main, my husband had the fettuccini Alfredo with chicken and I had the baked manicotti. Everything was delicious! I won't lie though, we didn't finish half of it and had to take it home as the portions are large. As full as we were, my husband insisted we have a cannoli. We will most definitely be back. One of the best restaurants in the Hudson county area! We had the clams oreganate, shrimp scampi, and crab cakes for our appetizer - they did not disappoint! Seriously, they were gone in a matter of minutes! Can't forget the complimentary salad to salad - the perfect balance of flavors and the dressing is to die for. For dinner we had the special Crispy Salmon Piccata and the Eggplant Parmigiana (if you enjoy eggplant slices perfectly thin, this dish is for you!). Both dishes were cooked to perfection and evenly proportioned. The salmon was tender and crispy in a blend of garlic and lemon sauce accompanied by a fresh bed of spinach. For dessert, we both shared a espresso martini (one of my favorites!) and safe to say, I will definitely be coming back here even just for that! Guttenberg is a tiny town between North Bergen and West New York. It is literally made up of a few blocks. GP's is the hidden gem that everyone should know about if you don't know already. Located on a residential street right up from Blvd. East this is the most authentic Italian food I have ever had in my life. I've been coming here since I was a kid and the food quality only gets better as the years go by. When you first enter you will see the bar but further in the back is the restaurant. I say restaurant but truly it looks like you are entering someone's living room. The decor is so homey and filled with family pictures all around. The entire wait staff including the veteran of them all Joe are masters at what they do. Joe has been there since the beginning and is a true gentleman at heart. Complimentary bread and the best salad you will ever have is brought to the table. Joe is always so kind to ask if you would like fresh ground pepper just to give it that extra kick. When I went recently with my friend who is not a cheese lover (the salad comes already prepped with tons of stuff) Joe was more then willing to return with her own salad without the cheese. If you want an appetizer trust me when I say everything on the menu is worth more then 5 stars. The meatballs, clams oreganata, mozzarella, you name it are all mouth watering. Now to the good stuff.....the dinner. My favorite meals that I am always a repeat offender with are the Chicken Balsamic with Roasted Red Peppers and the Shrimp Parmigiana. Each dish you order comes with a side of linguine separate in a bowl. It is the perfect portion. In my opinion I would rather not get filled up on the pasta and leave no room to enjoy the main dish which is why I enjoy the side of it. These two dishes are cooked to perfection. The sauces they use are truly fresh and with every bite it leaves you wanting more and more. With a place like GP's where the first course and second course meals are divine how could you not have dessert! As full as I am every time because I never leave a single piece behind I always make sure to eat something sweet after because after all their dessert is just as exceptional. The red velvet cake is delicious. Extremely moist and the perfect way to end the food coma you will be in after leaving. Please Please Please! Ordered Shrimp Scampi for delivery. When I think about Shrimp Scampi, I think buttery and lemony goodness on top of pasta, plain pasta. My family and I loved this place till there was a stripper striping infront for 4 children couples on dates and out with their family for a 80 year old mans party and it wasn't a private party.... My husband and I never go on dates and tonight was a date night since we haven't been out in 2 months... this place is very romantic and they have the lights dimmed and candles on the table which makes it beautiful but there was a 7 yr old girl, 2 boys that were at least 13 yrs old. Me and my husband and another family with a little girl and this woman came out dancing on this mans lap for his party and started stripping. She ended up stripping and was in a thong and had pasty that had tassels on them and she was walking around dancing... this was completely disgusting, inappropriate, we will never come here again... The fact that it couldn't have been a private party but a stripper had to be in front of a whole bunch of random families with children and people on dates it was completely disgusting. I read in all the reviews "old school their back Italian joint". By no means is that an exaggeration. It truly is something you'd see in a movie. The complimentary salad was the best--such a well-balanced dish full of flavor. I'd order it as a standalone dish and come here multiple times. 7/10 Clam oreganata - no idea what was in it but it matched with the clam so well. 6.5/10 Crab cakes - melted in my mouth...absolutely fantastic. 7.5/10 Shrimp scampi - best shrimp I've had in years. Buttery, juicy and cooked to absolute perfection. 9/10 Scarpariella chicken - read a ton of good reviews on this dish. To me it was average so I tried smothering it with parmesan and that did the trick. The side of linguine was a nice balance. 5/10 The cab sauv and especially their shiraz complimented the dishes well. Attention to detail, pretty good service (although the tall waiter rubbed me the wrong way) and atmosphere are what bump this restaurant into 4-5 star range. My girlfriend and I went to GPs for a sexy night out, traveled all the way from NY, and we were sat at a cozy table we was enjoying appetizers and this guy that works at the restaurant comes over and tells us " I love it , I really love it, it's beautiful but your making some customers uncomfortable" We apologized and said ok. But honestly it stuck out in my mind that it really wasn't a customer it must have been the waiter, the waiter saw us kissing a few times and he clearly was the uncomfortable one... since after that guy told us that he never returned to assist with dinner orders and drinks. Yes I get it I guess seeing Two beautiful ladies making out is a bit intimidating for a old man, but we were paying customers and spend over $150 and as well still tipped him and sadly we would have stayed there if it wouldn't had come to that annoyance!! You would think in this time and era people would be much more accepting of the evolution of LOVE. This is my go to for the Guttenberg/North Bergen area. If you like the old school family run Italian restaurant with quality food & quality service, then go here, you won't be disappointed. Parking is tough in this area but they have free valet that you can take advantage of. I typically sit at the bar when I go and the staff is always friendly. No matter what you order for your meal, they will give you a Greek salad to start which is delicious, just be mindful of this so you don't over order. As for the apps - meatballs are a must. You get 2 but they are pretty big so perfect for 2 people. Also the Zuppe de Clams and crab cakes are a personal favorite. For entrees - the linguini in clam sauce or the zuppe de clams are my go to's. They also have a strip steak and Veal Piccata. Whatever you order, you can't go wrong. I absolutely love this place. I've been here three times within a week of discovering it. My mother told me she had been here 20 years ago and the food was delicious so of course I had to give it a try. The staff is very friendly and the restaurant is family style. You will hear some Frank Sinatra and other 50s-60s classics playing lowly inside, just quiet enough for one to have a conversation. Also, their limoncello cake is amazing I recommend it. The absolute best Italian around. I have to say I'm a little upset that it took me so long to try this restaurant. It's small, the lighting is dim and the place seems to have a certain charm. The food was amazing. I've tried the eggplant parmigiana. It was a large portion, super cheesy and full of flavor. The chicken scrapariella which was a chicken dish with pepperoncini it was delicious. Pretty much all of the dishes we've tried have been great. I don't know if I would recommend making a reservation, I don't think you need them. Although the bar area fills up very quickly. Even on a week night the bar is filled with people. I tried to make a reservation on their website but it didn't seem to go through. When I called they had no record. Same dishes do not taste the same twice, which is disheartening bc one of the chefs made the chixken scarpereella soo good i'd order it each week for life! I want to like this place soo much especially because I live nearby and would come here weekly but the older women who either own or run or who are affliated with this place completley turned me off due to their lack of respect for patrons trying to dine in peace. While trying to enjoy a relaxing dinner with my husband, these yentas where cackling away so LOUD!!! Not once, not twice, but three times. I'm italian so i grew up loud but this was obnoxious. One of the few places to receive one of my coveted five star ratings, GP's fully earns every star and then some. This little Italian restaurant in Guttenberg has some roots here, and has been serving delicious food and thirst quenching drinks as long as I have known it. It has a lot of "locals" that go here (my girlfriend and I included) and a very good crowd if you happen to walk in any night of the week. Here are some of the reasons why it has earned my coveted five star rating. The first reason...is the food. When I say it is amazingly delicious, it is a understatement. I cannot tell you how good the food is here, you have to go and try it for yourself. I promise though, you will not be disappointed. My personal favorite is the Chicken Parm, and although I order it every time because it is my personal favorite, it doesn't mean I haven't tried other things. To list a couple, the lasagna is hearty and delicious, the fish is always good, the meatballs are OUT OF THIS WORLD, the eggplant parm is a favorite of my girlfriends, the steaks are really good and cooked to your perfection every time, the crab cakes are some of the best I've had, the salad is phenomenal (yes the salad, I know), etc. The portions are very big and you will be walking out with a go bag every time. I could go on forever about the food but then we would never get to the other things. The second reason...is the staff. The owner George (who we know personally) takes pride in what he does and what he serves to his customers. He will make sure that you are always well taken care of and will always make sure to correct anything to the way you see it fit. He wants to always make sure that you have some excellent food and have a good time. The rest of the staff too is really good. Joe, who is one of the servers in the back, works hard every night to make sure his tables are all set and that you are having a good time. Johnny, at the bar, is always making sure your drink is full with what you want, your food is getting to you as soon as it comes out the kitchen, and that you leave with a smile on your face. The third reason...is the atmosphere. The atmosphere of the restaurant is really nice. The bar area is great for coming in, plopping down and having some good drinks while watching TV, chatting with everyone else there, and having some of the delicious food. During the winter it is the best place around because it is always warm and cozy there. But at the bar you can usually bet on having a conversation with someone else there or a couple people. The locals and other people that come in are very friendly. And Tuesday nights is trivia nights! Careful, its gets super competitive. Although I have never eaten in the dining room, I have never seen a unhappy table back there either when I walk though. Mostly what I have seen is people talking, laughing, and having a good time. It can get a little loud sometimes back there, but its because of all the fun people are having. The fourth reason...is the food! YES IT'S THAT GOOD! Overall, this place is one of the best that I know. I always cannot wait to come here and always have a good time when I do. I can understand where some people might think that because I am a local, I am biased. But I take my reviews very seriously, and if you don't believe me, just take a look at the other reviews this place has received. Although I have not been to it yet, there is a GP's in Jersey City too that George owns. I haven't been able to get over there yet because I always want to go to this one.
