How has no one reviewed this place yet? I'm very fussy about my Italian food but this place hit the mark. Stodgy, 'good 'ol boys' type of place but still clean with a very friendly staff. If I recall correctly, house wines are about $5 a glass (you'll have to forgive me; my boyfriend and I had quite a few) and entrees are generous as is the complimentary bread. Entree prices are as little as $15 (you will be taking left overs home with you...it's like going to visit my grandmother!) and as much as $20 (veal dishes). Come here, sit at the bar and shoot the breeze. Only downside is finding parking (though they do offer valet). read more

My husband and I love GP's. He took me to this restaurant when we first started dating and we've been coming back ever since. It's a cozy, intimate little place that has top-notch service and authentically delicious Italian food. Every single item on the menu is cooked to perfection. The bar in front is a great place to come in and settle for a quick bite or have a few drinks with friends too if a whole sit down dinner isn't in the cards for your evening. The food was okay, nothing to write home about. The service is horrible !! We had an older guy serving our table and he just didnt give a damn about us. He was more interested in getting more tables seated in his section than looking after us. We asked for no parsley on our food and i think he added extra helpings of it. We asked for water, it showed up after 3 reminders. I got so mad by the end of it, i ended up giving him a piece of my mind. The atmosphere at GP's is cozy and inviting, the dining room looks like it belongs in a quaint street in Italy! The food and service are absolutely outstanding. After reading the reviews on this place, I decided to give it a go. I'm so glad I did. I walked in 2 hours before they opened on accident because someone left the door unlocked. The bartender John gave me the warmest welcoming I've ever had in a restaurant. He explained the situation and offered me a drink while they set up in the kitchen. I also got to engage in a great conversation with Joe (I think he's one of the waiters) who's very funny and endearing. I got to meet the owner Pat, who's husband was first cousins with Frank Sinatra! I felt like I've been going there since they opened (37 years ago). Although I didn't get to stay for dinner, I truly enjoyed my drinks and conversation. I'm definitely looking forward to my next visit. Next time I'll make sure I have more time. read more

I always just sit at the bar, watch the Yanks, tear through the delicious bread basket with some olive oil and balsamic, order up some chicken parmesan, go through a bottle of wine and enjoy the F out of myself. This place is everything you expect when going to a real Italian restaurant. This is it. Old school. This place is great. I've been there a few times and will continue to go back. My husband and I stopped for dinner there on Monday night about 7pm and while it wasn't crowded, there was still a good trade going on. We sat at the bar and John the bartender really took care of us. He's a total pro - remembered us from a previous visit six months ago, even remembered where we sat and our drinks. This guy should be holding classes on customer service, he has great people skills, is very quick and confident in his work, and must have eyes in the back of his head, he didn't miss a thing. We really enjoyed listening to the conversations around us, the crowd is obviously made up of a lot of regulars. We ordered dinner - Mediterranean Sea Bass for my husband and Eggplant Parm for me. Both quite good and good portions. The dinners are served with a nice salad that John tossed and served to us. We also had a basket of crusty delicious bread. Our dinner (entrees, cocktails, glass of wine with dinner) came to about $70 before tip. Not the cheapest place around, but good value. I've recommended this place to a number of friends, none of which has been dissapointed. read more

We were talking about moving. Leaving West New York, and mixing it up a little bit. One sentence ended all moving talk, "... but we won't be able to walk up to GP's anymore". It is that kind of place. We bring all of our out of town guests to GPs and they all say it is that neighborhood Italian spot they wished they had at home. Go more than once, and everyone remembers you. You feel at home. They open with a salad and bread. Simple salad, cold, crisp, great dressing and some wonderfully chewy bread. Who still does that? The Baked clams are my go to app. (Personally I think both their baked clams and linguine and clams are the best in all of Jersey). Sometimes they do an artichoke special app which is ridiculous. I was about to go through all of my favorite items on the menu, but they are all good, from the Scarapiella Chicken (get it non the bone) to pork chops with peppers, to the tripe it is all oh so good. Just make sure somewhere you fit in some meatballs, you can always get them as a side or app if not an entree. You haven't been to GPs until you had the meatballs. Run, don't walk to GPs, just don't take my seat at the corner of the bar by the jukebox. read more

I have been eating here for about 15 years. I don't like salad AT ALL because I don't like dressing, but there is nothing like a salad from GP's! It's nothing short of amazing. They serve this warm bread, and everything on the menu is amazing. It's a old school Italian restaurant and you walk in and the bar is there, and you wonder if you walked into the wrong place, and then you see the restaurant is in the back. My mother recently broke her foot and we ordered delivery for the first time ever. I called and told them my chicken wasn't right, and they passed me to the owners daughter and she had the right one delivered pronto! I would like to say I was surprised but I wasn't because the service here is spectacular! They did it no questions asked! They have a lifetime customer in me for sure! read more

The food was excellent. I ordered the tripe. My deliver was almost 50 mins late. Everytime I called to find out what happened to my food or the driver , I was given the run around or put on hold. Nobody knew where the driver was..and no one ever called back to explain why my delivery was extremely delayed. I really hope that was just an off day since this was my first experience with this restaurant. Really frustrating experience and the fact that the women I spoke to on the phone we're quite dismissive did not help. read more

ZERO STARS. First time ordering and it was disgusting! I ordered mozzarella marinara and a cheese cake. What I got was soggy breaded cheese the size of a brick with a ton of marinara sauce on top of it and a mousse like cheesecake. The cheesecake seriously had the texture of hair mousse. So gross. Went here for dinner after a day of shopping at Paramus on a Thursday night based on a co-worker's recommendation. They give you a complimentary bowl of fresh house salad and fresh warm bread. We ordered the fried calamari which was fresh and crunchy. This is a small little bar/restaurant and it's now 7PM on Thursday and half the tables are filled. At this point we knew this place is special. I ordered the veal saltimbocca and my wife ordered the shrimp francese. Both were delicious as was the homemade carrot cake we ordered for dessert. We both agreed that we haven't had good Italian food since moving from Brooklyn 2 yrs ago. If we lived nearby, we would come here more often. read more

When I first moved to Guttenberg 9 years ago, I really, *really* wanted to like this place, especially since it's a stone's throw from my house. Here's what's good: The cozy atmosphere, and how they make you feel like a friend of the family. I do like the vibe. But the food is just so damn heavy! I know what you're thinking: Isn't Italian food heavy? Not necessarily. It doesn't have to be so gut-bustingly heavy. I always feel kinda sick after I eat there. And it could be tastier. I'm much more for quality over quantity. But the prices are a rip-off for what you get. It's such a shame. I really, really want them to be better. I do like having a comfortable neighborhood bar to go to. If Charlie is still there, he's great. read more
