Normally their food is exceptional. Not tonight. We ordered take-out....orange chicken with fried rice. Passed on a side salad when were told it was $10.99! The coating on the chicken wasn't the same as in the past...it was strange. The chicken had something like straw pieces in it that we couldn't chew. Nothing was hot. I want to start this off by saying the server we had was amazing and this does not reflect him at all. However, this place is garbage. We ordered the vegan fried orange chicken and it was so soft. Not fried enough at all but oh well we ordered other stuff. The side of "fried rice" was just white rice with egg. When I asked about this we were told oh only the actual order of fried rice comes with veggies sautéed like normal fried rice should be. Idk why their side that comes with meal is different ??? The biggest shock was when we got the bill. Each order of orange tofu was almost $21 !!!! When asked about this they told us "oh the menu doesn't reflect the actual prices". This is the worst service I've had in the restaurant. I came here at night time 9.05PM, i. I ordered two food and had been waiting for 40 minutes and no one came and asked for us anything, they walked around and looked at us without say anything . I know it's busy on weekends but this is not how you guys serve customers ( plus there are a lot workers at that time. We would happy to wait if at least one of waiters say something " kitchen kinda busy or your food will come out soon" but NO. I work in the restaurant too so I definitely understand the food may come out late if it's busy but I just sitting and watch all waiters walk around. "We aren't going again" to Grapow proclaimed my Korean born wife. She and her Korean friends stopped by Grapow Thai 3 days ago and ordered a noodle dish. 1. Not too many noodles. 2. Way too salty. "Too salty" complements my observation when I went 3 or 4 years ago to Grapow and experienced "too sweet" (Pad Thai). I went there for lunch. Food was good and had a nice environment . The only complaint I have is we were seated in a booth and the black window blinds were full of dust and with the AC and ceiling fan going , there was dust particles clinging to dusty blinds. Generally this place is great, but I think some of the staff has been here so long that they hate their lives because every time we have come back, service has gotten worse and worse. We support this place OFTEN! Service was WEAK today. Invited our friends for the first time. Food was good, but service disappointed. 1) They put peanuts in my order after I asked them not to because I'm highly allergic. 2) Food didn't all come out at the same time. Took so long my god daughter was crying she was so hungry! 3) They never checked back up on us. I had to ask the hostess (who is always super nice) for our check. She proceeded to take care of us from there. Never saw the wait staff after that. 4) Had to ask for sauces/condiments that are usually set out, but had to wait until we were halfway done with the meal before we even had the chance to bc no one ever came back! Was constantly flagging down staff for service. 5) Didn't get any extra napkins. Had to steal them from the next table. 6) Refilled my drink with the wrong drink. I mean, yeah, sometimes places have an "off" day, but there is particularly at least one waitress who absolutely hates working here after the 3+ years we have continued to support this amazing restaurant. Birthday dinner request tonight was Grapow (of course). Showed up and every table was occupied because this place is so yummy! Was told our wait was about a half an hour by the hostess. Well we were seated after 20 mins. And our wonderful hostess ended up being a great server too! We ordered drinks from the bar, appetizers and sushi rolls to start. Our server checked in on us while we waited, our drinks were always full, and the food is consistently amazing. If you are looking for a great place to dine, Grapow is staffed with great people and always has the best food. I have missed this place so so much. Originally from Riverside, when I moved away I just never got to come back. 2007 was such a long time ago but the food has not changed at all!! All the flavors are still there, the presentation of the dishes, and the freshness of the food. I am so glad I made a quick stop here tonight. I brought my boyfriend and wanted him to try everything but we had some food before getting there. I had to get their calamari because I think it's the best I've ever had. What I love about it is that it's tossed with some green onions, peppers, and the SAUCE! The cilantro chili lime sauce is just to die for and it goes so perfectly well with seafood (it also comes with the tilapia dish). I also wanted him to try the lemon dressing on the house salad. They have a lunch special during the day that comes with a salad if you want to try it and not order a whole salad. The dressing is so good you're gonna want to ask for more abs dip everything with it. Lastly, my Thai Rice soup! I use to get this all the times. It's comforting, filling, and perfect for cold days or when you're sick. The nice big ground chunks of chicken and shrimp, the little fried tofu, the smell of garlic and to bring it all together is the thinly sliced ginger. Perfect remedy for when you're sick or whenever. They have a full bar and sushi bar which is to the left. Plenty of parking which is also near a Chili's, CVS, and LA Fitness. Give this cute Mom and Pop place a try. I love this place. Me and my husband ate here once and have been trying to bring people ever since. We've so far brought my parents and this trip was a group of friends from our congregation. The food is always fresh and perfectly cooked and seasoned. Huge portions too. Today I had Thai chili fries for the first time: phenomenal! Our server today was Daryl, he said he was newly promoted to waiter. He was awesome. Friendly and very attentive. I hope to have him serve us our next visit. Food was great only thing is when I was going to take a bite I saw a long hair draped in my fried rice.. eww.. and when I told our waiter he was apologetic and offered to have it remade but I was already full. Although I did hear one of the ladies in the kitchen smirk and bellowed across the kitchen "it's was more protein!" I like a good joke but that was unprofessional especially since we are directly across from the kitchen door. The waiter laughed and said "yeah I'm just letting you know" then we proceeded to wait about 20+ mins so far without being checked on and I have had time to write this review while still waiting. The picture of the door is how far we are from the kitchen which I can clearly see not a single woman in there wearing a hair net. Disgusting. And we actually never saw our waiter again.. we had to shout to a different server who was getting another tables check ready to please get ours too. He was very helpful and cheery and graciously helped us since our server had abandoned us. They did end up taking my hairy dish off the bill which was surprising and they still took our 10% check in coupon as well that was very nice of them. Came here for lunch today, based on my dental hygienist's recommendation. I listened carefully, not even noticing if she tortured my gums and teeth, because I believed she was a real Thai American. Update: Ooops. I'm bad. She's Filipino. Still ok. A lot closer to that part of the world than I am. We decided to make our first experience a selection coming from their typical lunch menu. That means we also got a salad, an egg roll, and a chicken slammer, with our entrée. Under $9. The salad started us off right. Crisp iceberg, carrots, purple cabbage, topped with a light green, sweetened mayonnaise dressing. Loved the finishing touch of crunchy wonton strips on top. I could have just kept on eating this all afternoon. Each platter was beautiful to look at. We eat with our eyes...remember? Mine was the pad see ew with pork. A great tasting dish with plenty of textures and flavors. The pork was tender, the rice noodles and scrambled egg had that burnt Asian flavor I have grown to crave. Topped with cilantro, it was divine. Yep, get it. Mr. B had a yellow curry. Great tasting, spiced just right in my book, but probably too mild for those with hair on their chest. Too bad there was lots of potato and very little chicken. Definitely a misstep in my book. My pad see ew had twice the amount of meat and protein. His dish came with fried rice. Great tasting, too, but he had ordered brown rice. Oooops. Misstep #2. Luckily, he liked the fried rice quite a lot. The sides: One eggroll, good tasting, non-greasy, not sure if there was any meat, just well seasoned vegetables if I had to guess. And what the heck is a chicken slammer? It turns out to be a grilled, thin pastry filled with a ground chicken filling. It was actually pretty good. And there was also a small cup of a sweet, fishy and spicy dipping sauce that put a whole new dimension on the filling. Oh, btw, they appear to have addressed the complaint of not noticing their clientele by installing little electronic buttons on the table. The button rings a bell and/or turn on a light (not sure) to let their servers know you are needing service. Clever. We punched the button to see what it would do. Hee hee. It worked. I seriously enjoyed my meal. Mr. B was slightly less enthused, but I know I could get him to return if we were in the area. And yeah, I know it's Americanized, but what isn't these days? Has a bad rap our yelp. I've been a customer for 10 years. For me the food has stayed consistently awesome! Service is hit or miss but if you don't mind looking for your waitlist to tell them it's time to pay then this place is great. I came here for the first time yesterday expecting bad service, as I read on previous reviews. I must, however, disagree with the negative reviews... I ACTUALLY LIKE THIS PLACE! For real! SERVICE: I came here with a party of 6 and we were welcomed and seated right away. Our server was friendly and attentive! He came to check on us to make sure we were okay throughout our meal. FOOD: Not authentic Thai---it's more American-Thai palate but good. We ordered the following: - JALAPEÑO CHEESE BALLS: very nice presentation but it was just okay for me... Let's just say they tasted like mozzarella sticks (balls, in this case), battered and deep-fried, then drizzled with Thai plum sauce and topped with a jalapeño. - DRAGON WINGS: Nice presentation again but it tasted more like lightly fried chicken wings tossed in ketchup and sriracha. - CHICKEN PANANG CURRY: This is my all-time favorite Thai dish and this place did not disappoint. Not THEE best but it still ranks up there with other Thai restaurants in the IE. - CRAB FRIED RICE: Big portion, enough to feed 2 adults and 2 kids; or 2 hungry adults. We all loved it! - PAD PIKING: Green beans in a tomato-based sauce. So good! - THAI RICE SOUP: This would be a great starter for those who have never tried Thai food and want to try their soup. The portion is very small compared to other Thai restaurants. I'd say this is just so-so. - FRIED CALAMARI: Pretty good. Actually, best in the area but, again, you can't mess up Fried Calamari. What I loved were the 2 dipping sauces--- they totally nailed it. Two distinct flavors and both were superb! CLEANLINESS/ATMOSPHERE: Cozy little restaurant in Mission Grove Plaza. There is also a bar with 1 TV, which you don't find at many Thai restaurants. The interior is dark in color. I'd prefer a warmer, light-colored space to amplify the colorful dishes-- just my preference. OVERALL: "We ran out of mangos" for Mango Sticky Rice is the worst thing you could ever hear!!! However... We had a great time, the service was wonderful, and the food was good. I would come back here! They have lunch special menus, which we were grateful for because their selections are quite expensive. For pad thai, regular dish was more than $13 We both had lunch special pad thai for just above $10 for each dish. The portion was questionable at first but it was filling when we finished it. I've been here a half-dozen occasions and frankly don't have too much to say as I thought I would. I'll start with the positives: the portions are HUGE and the servers have always been prompt and very friendly. However, I don't think they warrant more than the current 3.5 star rating because the food is fairly pedestrian. Servings are big, but the flavors are never particularly distinct. Nothing has been bad but nothing has knocked it out of the park either. Another negative is that the preparation of the dishes seems to vary from night to night, probably due to different chefs. Something as simple as a grilled fish comes out fairly different on different nights. It's a safe option, but one I'm never excited to go to. Come with an appetite or be ready for leftovers. 4-6pm is happy hour with $5 appetizers that are the same as the normal portion, so that's always a good option. read more

Let me start by saying I don't write reviews unless they're bad. Not just bad but so bad that it pisses me off to the point of writing a yelp review. I'm from SF and was recommended this place by a local. Being I'm from SF I'm spoiled with good food. That isn't saying LA and greater socal doesn't have amazing food, this place just isn't one of them. After seeing the ratings and reviews I was ready to try this place for myself! My gf, her family, and myself held off from eating all day at Universal to pig out here afterwards. Boy do I wish we made a different decision tonight. So before I get into the bad let me start with the good. The establishment is gorgeous and the ambiance is perfect. Even with a full bar and Sunday night football, the fact the venue is split makes it very enjoyable to dine in. Granted I didn't dine in, as a restaurant/businees owner, I look at all these things. Considering I'm staying 20mins from the restaurant, a lot of the dishes held up REALLY well! Especially the orange chicken, which in my opinion was the best dish of the night. I didn't get to try the crab fried rice but everyone who did, loved it. It's worth noting it wasn't finished tho... Nothing was. Now on to why there's a one star in this rating. In all honesty it's a shame it can't be zero stars. First off let me start by saying, if I'm paying $20 on average per dish, I want exactly what I asked for. Especially when what I'm asking isn't that difficult to keep out of a dish THAT DOESN'T HAVE THE INGREDIENT TO BEGIN WITH! So I myself ordered a panang curry with chicken. I made it a point to ask for no lemon grass. I was told by multiple people, the dish didn't come with it. Cool. So I reassurd the waiter that I didn't want lemon grass in my dish. Upon picking up our order the receipt clearly said, "ADD Lemon Grass"... Ok no sweat. I bring it back and they happily exchange it while explaining to me the dish doesn't even come with lemon grass... In my mind, it's football Sunday night and it's pretty darn busy, I can't hold them to it. But twice? Twice? Even after I had to walk in and make it clear I don't want lemon grass. Unfortunately I didn't realize my dish was full of it until getting back home. There was so much lemon grass in my dish, as soon as I opened it that's all you could smell. My gf ordered pad Thai. Let me add that my gf and I love spicy food and they did a pretty darn good job of applying the heat we wanted. So kudos there. Now back to the "pad Thai", I've had better tasting Pad Thai from hole in the wall "King of Thai" restaurants. My point in saying this it to try and justify the price of this food. At $20/dish I expect WAY MORE. The pad Thai was for sure spicy but pathetically tasteless and flavourless. She actually dumped a box of rice in it, it was so painfully bland. Pad Thai is very rich in flavor and has multiple individual accents that come together to make "pad thai", the only one I got was the tamarind which tasted more like ketchup. Pad Thai is supposed to be sweet, salty, and sour. This barely hit one of those notes. The yellow curry, isn't even worth me speaking on it's so pathetic. There was barely any chicken in the fish at all. Just bits. The terriyaki chicken, I've had better from L&L Hawaiian. We also got lettuce wraps, which one wrap got shared between a few people, and the rest of the dish is sitting unfinished. I'll let that speak for itself. The pad see ew was a lot like the pad Thai in my opinion. Pretty but lacking authentic flavor. We also got a har gow, which are the Chinese shrimp dumplings. For those of you who don't know, this is typically a dim sum dish that's steamed. I'm not sure what I got but they weren't steamed. The flavor was almost spot on actually but those weren't steamed at all. They actually reminded me of when you microwave them the day after or something. The edges were so hard and the wrapper was about as dry as death valley. It's worth noting not a single person finished their dish. The closest dish to being finished was my panang. In my opinion the craze with this place is the ambiance and venue itself. Just because you put a high price tag on food and plate it pretty, doesn't make it good. This place is the perfect example of that. I take pride in being a great cook and successful businessman. Whoever owns this place, and whoever is cooking, should be ashamed. I have no issues with paying for food, clearly I ate here. If you're going to ask for a high price, make sure your food is worth it first. After not eating all day, being so excited to try this place, I couldn't be more regretful wasting my money here. As someone whose eaten authentic Thai food, cook authentic Chinese food, I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone looking for good food. read more

Great atmosphere. I visited Grapow with friends on a random Tuesday night. We had various cocktails and beer along with appetizers. We ordered their edemame, calamari, and dumpling. Venue - Large restaurant with a nice dining section and a pretty cool bar area with a lot of tvs, and outside patio area. Prices - Avg prices for a higher end restaurant.
