I do not eat pork and love that on Wednesday they make stew peas with oxtail instead of pork and make it the regular way on Saturday so I can still enjoy it. I see so many comments saying they're rude but that has never been my experience and I've been going for over 8 years. I don't know what's going on in that kitchen, but someone needs to be held accountable -- because they're out here serving spoiled food like it's no big deal. Let's start with the snapper. It smelled off the moment I opened the box. I still gave it a shot -- and I immediately regretted it. The fish was mushy, sour, and absolutely spoiled. Like, this-should-not-be-served-to-humans level spoiled. I couldn't even swallow the first bite. I was worried I'd get sick. Then came the oxtail sauce. What should've been rich and flavorful came oily and also smelled funky -- like it had been sitting out for too long. The whole plate tasted like leftovers gone wrong. And not just "oh no I left it in the fridge too long" wrong -- more like "this should've been thrown away days ago" wrong. Even the sides couldn't save it. The rice and peas were mediocre and the cabbage was just ok. The cabbage was the only halfway decent thing but by that point, I was too grossed out to enjoy anything. I spotted this little cafe as I dropped my daughter off at dance camp at the fabulous Fort Bend Academy of Art and Dance in the same strip center. When I saw Jamaican food painted on the window, I knew I was in for a dinner encounter. It was closed Monday, but I stopped by Tuesday to try the patties. I spied cabbage and plantains on the menu, but sadly they were sold out! I got two patties - chicken and veggies. The crust was just right. The chicken was flavorful and not too spicy. The veggie was fresh and wholesome. I finished it for breakfast. Service wise, there were no grand gestures, but respectful, quick interactions. It's definitely a neighborhood joint where customers are known. If I'm in the area again, I'll stop by to see if plantains and cabbage are available and if they are indeed delicious. The lady walks to the back and sends the guys out which was weird and the gentleman proceeded to take my order. The fish dishes are always fresh or they won't sell it. 4. They have yet to get caught up on raising their prices to satisfy the word recession vs taking care of their community in which they have served and has served them. 5. The staff is very nice and approachable. Never had a rude experience here. I prefer the Red Snapper or the Curry Goat on my days off. The food is great, authentic Jamaican cuisine. Now, if only they can open on time and have the food ready when the doors open. I have patronize many Jamaican restaurants in the Houston area but I keep coming back to this one because of the quality of the food. However, it is so disappointing that they do not value their patrons time. I have learned to call first, to inquire if the food is ready before I drive across town. Curry chicken/Stew chicken were the only thing prepared by their opening time of 11am; sorry, rice/peas also available. No vegetables were ready outside of a salad they threw together. I'm truly disappointed, this is not Grace's cooking I remember from BMC days. Hardly any gravy, meat was dry may have been re-heated from the day before and crispy pieces of rice. 1) If you promote opening at 11a, pls have more of your menu available for choosing, 2) If not ready to serve, don't serve food from day before and 3) we as customers pay quite a penny for your cuisine of which we are under the assumption is true quality. I ended up here after my very pregnant sister begged me to take her here for Carribean food. Now I'm not one to really venture out into island foods but this place was actually pretty good. It's very homey, mom and pop type place and super comfy. I ordered a large oxtail dinner with white rice and cabbage. Now they did get my order wrong by giving me rice and peas instead of white rice but they were super cool with fixing It and even gave me more oxtails for the trouble. It's a bit pricey in my opinion but they do give you quite a lot of food but it's super hot and brought out super quick. They scowl at you like you're a bother. 4-5 times, no oxtails were cooked, & I was told to wait up to an hour on my 30 minute lunch break. I've been coming here for a long time. since b4 2012, Today makes at least 7+ yrs. I drive pretty far too. Today I drove about 40 mins from my school. I got there 130ish. The fried Dumplings weren't done, the cabbage wasn't done. If the restaurant is open for business why isnt the food done? They don't give much meat(my large oxtail was $14 and pack the plate with rice. They had maybe an ounce of lettuce one tomato and 2 cucumbers and called that a salad. The owners husband won't crack a smile for the life of him. and I'm good at making ppl laugh I'm funny as hell. Lmao. My son is now 6 & they have been feeding me since before I was pregnant! This business is ran by the father, the mother & her daughter. They are Jamaican family and the food is definitely authentic. If this isn't supporting black owned businesses I don't know what is. The mother cooks, cleans, serves & is the cashier. The daughter cooks & serves as so does the father. They have chicken, veggie, & beef (my fav) patty's, oxtails, jerk chicken, curry shrimp, stew & all types of other amazing items. Some items sell out quick like the jerk wings while others are ready later In the afternoon (due to freshly made & long cooking times) like the oxtails but it's worth the wait! I noticed there was a complain about the call In orders being prepared when you come in but who wants soggy jerk chicken that's been sitting there for 15 min because you're running late in traffic now you want a new plate? I think not! They value the quality of the food here and it's a small staff with a huge demand. I hope everyone takes the time to read this and give this place a try. Definitely don't forget to tip! Heard about this spot from several people. Made it a bit early today and waited 20 minutes for it to open at 11 am. They did not open the doors until 11:15am. I waited and talked with another customer on the porch. When we finally entered the guy at the counter stated all they had ready was curry goat and the remainder of the menu would be ready in 20-30 minutes. The other gentleman didn't say a word and walked out. I ordered the curry goat. Then he tells me I had to have cash b/c the lady with the credit card machine wasn't there yet!!! Thankfully I had some cash which I seldom carry otherwise I would've walked out as well. The food was good. Not great but good. I drove across Houston for this and was disappointed. Could've went to Caribbean Hot Pot where I normally go. May try it again if I'm in the area already and it'll be much later than there opening time. Definitely the best Jamaican oxtails I have had in Houston. The meat just comes off the bones and the gravy it cooks in is so flavorful. The rice and beans are yummy and the plantains are always cooked just right. I have also tried the Jerk Chicken and it is always so good and cooked just right. They definitely dont kill it making it too spicy. It is always seasoned to perfection. 2 plates and a side of plantains will cost about 30 bucks. ... but I have never come across cheap Jamaican food so its expected and I never mind here. read more
