This is probably the best Jamaican restaurant on the South West side of town. The brown stew chicken is deliciously sweet and the jerk is flavorful but not that spicy. The beef patties were flaky and spicier than the jerk. My only complaint is that they charge a "non-cash adjustment fee" of 4% which is basically just a fee to cover their credit card processing fees. After I found this restaurant I sent a text to my middle school bff and told her I found a new go to place for patties! She instantly responded, "Lunch there next week?" Ya Mon! Our lunch date was last Tuesday. The restaurant is very simple inside but the nicest Caribbean couple were there & greeted us like friends when we walked in. My island friend & got a booth, menus, & started to check out the menu. She ordered chicken roti, it sounded familiar but my mind was blank! She reminded me the chicken roti was a Caribbean burrito! The bread/tortilla is super soft, similar to Indian panan bread. Our food was ready & delivered quickly, then she says, "remember we need to eat this with our hands!" You tear off the bread, then use it to scoop up the jerk chicken curry inside! It was heaven. It was so delicious I couldn't stop eating. Then realized I didn't even make a dent in my roti. Back in the day this establishment would easily be 10/10 but with the recent inflation on meat prices its sadly dropped to a 7.5/8.5, the price is just so sky rocketed compared to what I was used to but the food will always contain abundance of flavor. portion size is a lil ehh but taste wise they never disappoint read more

Any time I'm in the area I make love bird a designated stop. When my family hears I'm making a stop near sugar land they ask me to pick them up plates. This is a small spot within a strip center. The food is so worth it and very authentic. You can eat inside or call it in for pick up - usually takes about 15-20 mins so call in advance! Everyone I've met in the store is so kind! The menu is a decent size, they have specials and the BEST meat patties I've had in Houston and close to ever! (I didn't make it to the car without biting it lol) The oxtails and jerk chicken are my go-tos. With the oxtails, they are generous. This isn't your $19.99 and receive 2 tails type of place... come hungry! Most of the plates come with a small/large option. The large portion easily last me 3 days. They have plenty of sides, my favorite are the rice & peas (rice & beans), mac & cheese, cabbage or plantains - you can't go wrong with any of these. The yams are good, but definitely sweet. The patties are in a warmer in a cabinet next to the register, usually chicken and beef are there when I've come. Get both! They accept cash and card. The restaurant is quite small, and even though there are tables there, almost everyone we saw had ordered for pick-up. The temperature in the restaurant was on the hotter side, so be mindful about that if you decide to dine in! Food-wise, we were able to sample: - Oxtails - very flavorful! I like that the meat was NOT too tender - I like the meat still having some chewiness to it. The only negative thing would be that the meat was on the saltier side. Lighter salt would have made it perfect! Oh, the portion was definitely good for the Large size. - Curry Goat - definitely another great dish. The meat was tender, and the curry sauce was not overpowering. I ordered this for dinner Placed my order over the phone and informed it would be about 20mins. I ordered a large plate of oxtails with plantains and a small plate of oxtails with Mac n cheese. I also ordered a beef pattie I made it there in 30 mins and the food was ready.. drive home in traffic(took about 30 mins) and the food was still hot!! The beef pattie is sooo gooooood!!! It has spice to perfection and flaky good! I really enjoyed the oxtails. It wasn't very spicy or salty. I added a dash of Tony's and accent for my own preference and that took it up a notch. The wife and I have visited Love Bird twice now. It has become our go-to spot for delicious Jamaican food. So far, we've had the oxtails, curry chicken, brown stew chicken, ackee and saltfish, rice & peas, cabbage, callaloo, and plantains. Their food is tasty and fresh, and at least the entrees are "bussing." Our only half-complaint is that the rice and peas--which is a signature Caribbean dish--is somewhat lackluster. Oh Love Bird, I have to start with the positive first because there is negative. Sigh. Houston has such great offerings of a variety of cuisines and unfortunately the Caribbean offerings aren't up to par in most of the restaurants I've dined at. To be fair, island food tastes the best on an island or homemade to your taste but I'm on the hunt for great representation in Houston. I'm running out of places. The Yelp reviews for this restaurant are great. I can understand why. They have a greater variety of items. Okay, the positive. The curry chicken is very good. Very succulent and delicious! It is seasoned well! Based on the curry chicken I know the chicken roti would be very good. I would definitely order it again in a heartbeat! As a classically trained chef I can't make white rice well to save my life and the white rice here is perfect and that's a big deal for me. As a Caribbean girl, rice is important and a big thing so I know it's odd to say but the white rice is BANGING! The curry chicken is BANGING! Okay, in to the not so good. The brown stewed chicken is tasty but it needs a lot of pepper and it's too sweet. I burn sugar as well to make my brown stew but I add enough spice and seasonings so that it's not so sweet. It shouldn't be that sweet. Having said that, I think that if you're not familiar with Caribbean food some may like it very much. It's not bad, just too sweet. Speaking of sweet, the yams were not. No cinnamon or vanilla or nutmeg. Just tastes like yams out of a can and too much juice. The macaroni tastes too much like mustard. A little bit of mustard in macaroni is good but this is too sour. No bueno. Also, the rice and peas (arroz con gandules) is bland and not enough pidgeon peas. I love pidgeon peas. I would love to see more. My American boyfriend enjoyed the rice and peas so I think people would like them. All in all, I would order from here again. Probably to try the roti. Love Bird is a hole-in-the-wall with no-frills ambiance and excellent food. It's exactly what I like in a restaurant. The menu features standard Jamaican dishes. Our favorites are curry goat, jerk chicken, and oxtails. The curry goat is tender and has a deep flavor, but is not spicy at all. (By the way, my mouth salivated as typed that sentence.). The spiciness of the jerk chicken is inconsistent--it is pleasantly spicy at its spiciest. The oxtails are our favorite dish, and my younger kid always threatens to horde it all for herself. The oxtails somehow simultaneously melt in your mouth while retaining a slight chew. Like that of the curry goat, the oxtails' flavor is deep and permeates every muscle fiber. The entrees come in small or large orders with two sides. Our favorite sides are the rice and peas, which is rice cooked in some broth and studded with lentils, and plantains. Their yams are good, too, but they are sweeter than the yams you might eat at Thanksgiving. Love Bird is generous with its food. The portions are huge--we got eight meals out of three large orders. You will have leftovers unless you are a competitive eater. What's wonderful is that Love Bird's dishes taste even better after the flavors meld further in the refrigerator. That Love Bird provides for a lot of leftovers led to another discovery ... its food appears healthier than the delicious tastes would suggest. Often, when you put a leftover meat dish that was cooked in a sauce in the refrigerator, the fats and oils in the sauce rises and coagulates into a layer on top of the food. I'm not sure how, but Love Bird's leftovers do not form this layer of fat. Love Bird was our introduction to Jamaican food, and it has since become one of our favorite restaurants.
