My friend recommended this restaurant since she's Trinny, so I decided to give it a try. While I was waiting for her to arrive, I took a look at the menu; it's definitely on the smaller side, unless they do daily specials (we came on a Sunday). Customer service was solid. The young lady taking our order was really nice and patient, which I appreciated since it was my first time trying Trinny food. I ordered the curry chicken with fried rice and potato salad, while my friend went for the stew chicken with roti. Honestly, my plate was just okay. The chicken was a little dry and not as full of flavor as I was hoping. Now, the potato salad? That was the star for me. I could've eaten a whole container of it--I really wish I had grabbed some to go. My friend, on the other hand, really enjoyed her meal and said it was good. Everyone has their own way of cooking and that's okay. That being said, the food in general lacked flavor. Stopped by on a Sunday. As I walked in, I was not greeted, and was certainly confused as I was expecting a restaurant. It was basically a bar / event space. You order at the bar. After mentioning that it was my first time and requesting a menu, they displayed the menu on the TV. The menu has no pricing, nor did the shelf with specialty items (i.e. caramel, currants roll, etc.). While I enjoyed the music, it was extremely loud for a Sunday morning breakfast. I got doubles and aloo pie to eat there. Sadly, neither one had flavor. I was so looking forward to a nice hot doubles with plenty pepper, and was truly disappointed. The aloo pie barely had potato. I ordered two Sunday lunch plates to-go. One was stew chicken & the other was BBQ chicken. Both were served with fried rice, macaroni pie, and potato salad. The stew chicken was dry. No sauce at all. The curry goat roti had such amazing flavors! The goat was very tender and the curry sauce well seasoned. For the price they do give you large servings. The service needs a little bit of improvement. There was a period, where I waited at the bar and no one behind the bar approached me. I did see a male bartender communicating to a couple and didn't acknowledge me. I drove all the way over there from the woodlands, and they were closed. Not only did I research it on the internet but also on their front door they stated they were open. and the guy said we are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, but their hours stated that they are open on Tuesdays. I really think if a business have certain hours. They should post it in stay open doing business hours now. That was a real inconvenience due to the fact that it was my birthday,and my friend took off work just to bring me there. I am very disappointed in that business. I went to J&D, and it was excellent! The restaurant is in a strip in Katy. The space is small but with a good amount of seating. It's order at the counter. The environment is really upbeat, with Caribbean music playing in the background. All of the portions were huge, definitely enough to take home. We had a lot of great dishes, including: Doubles (4.5/5): Really tasty! The roti was great and the chickpeas were well cooked with a good amount of spice. Curry Chicken (5/5): Excellent. The chicken was cooked so well, and the sauce was really well spiced. Pumpkin (5/5): REALLY tasty, loved this dish. Fried Rice (3.5/5): The fried rice was pretty good, but not the standout. Let me start by saying I'm an adopted son of Trinidad and Tobago due to my marriage to my amazing wife. I have had some of the best doubles, aloo pies, curry goat and buss up shot meals ever back at T&T and let me say that J&D is up to something! The doubles are some of the best I've had in the states. The channa in the doubles are whole and not split as I am accustomed to, but it was still amazing. I would recommend slight to more pepper, sweet sauce and cucumbers. The curry goat was also delicious. It is a bit pricey, but each entree is like 2 servings, I can essentially have dinner tonight and lunch tomorrow. They also have the traditional drinks like Apple J and Peardrax. We will continue to come back here and tell all of our friends about it. read more

We paid $50 a couple to attend a private event recently. That cost was meant to cover our buffet food, however expected items were not even ever offered and what was offered, ran out before many of us ate. Apparently that was not such a bad thing because friends who were able to eat before it ran out, siad servings were stingy and taste was terrible; the worse doubles and rotis ever! The bar was slow and unprepared. I waited for service at the bar far too long and even though white wine was on the bar menu, they didn't chill any! There were constant lines to get into the event. It was lovely to see our friends but we left hungry and disappointed. Most of us felt that service, organization and food were terrible - I cant imagine that this place will stay in business much longer unless it is overhauled. read more

It was served with plain white steamed rice and cucumber slices. It was not very flavorful. The portion was huge. The customer service was good. I don't know if I'll return because the food was not that good on that day. I ate about a third of it then it sat in the fridge until trash day. I had no desire to eat the leftovers. I was expecting lots of flavor from a Caribbean restaurant. This was my first Trini experience. I was leaving Houston to head home to Austin and couldn't pass up the opportunity to have some of many ethnic cuisines lacking from the Austin area. I've really missed having access to a full Trinidadian restaurant menu. Doubles!!!! Pholourie, aloo pie, bakes...all the little things that make Trini food among the best cuisines can be found here. I got a couple doubles with pepper and tamarind on it. They were good with a proper consistency despite not being able to eat them for two hours (the drive). I also ordered a shrimp roti with pepper and tamarind on it but they forgot to add that roti...smh. It was tasty, good shrimp, but definitely lacking the flavors that I wanted because I never eat roti without at least adding the pepper to it. I also asked about pumpkin but the girl on the phone either didn't hear me or said they didn't have it though when I arrived for pickup, I saw it on the menu. I also ordered a sorrel which was delicious. Passing through the area, I'd detour here again now that I actually realize that they have a Full menu of all my favorite things. Visited Houston for the second time, and stopped by J & D's for the first time, and there was no wait when I arrived. I ordered 3 rotis (1 curry goat and 2 curry chicken). Not knowing how big they would be, I was shocked and was highly satisfied with my purchase. The rotis were very filling and delicious. The restaurant's ambiance made it feel like I was back home in the Caribbean. Just seeing the owner interact with some of the customers, and knowing them by name was definitely a site to see. They lost stars due to the bad service from the young man working the register. We walked in and patiently waited for him to assist. He acknowledged us and continued what he was doing. A customer walks in after us and he serviced him before us. Like we didn't exist. When he finally got to us. We ordered four doubles and two beef Roti's. We specifically asked that he not add the cucumbers to 3 of the doubles. He did anyway. When reminded he proceeded by scooping it off. Mind you..we asked for none due to an ALLERGY. So we had to have him make it again from scratch. In the end the beef roti was dry and lacked flavor same as the doubles. I had to add seasoning and pepper sauce to bring it up to par. Looking for a new restaurant to visit tonight, thought how about Caribbean cuisine? J&Ds came to mind, i haven't tried it and who doesn't love jerked chicken right? It's a small restaurant welcoming with an island clientele. Seemed like we were in Jamaica, reggae videos playing on the TV. The woman behind the counter was very welcoming and pointed to the menu on the monitor behind the counter. I mentioned we are both doing the KETO diet as i noticed every item had rice or potatoes. She offered to make us a cabbage and pepper mix instead to go with some jerk chicken. Sounded good so sure i said! Well it was fantastic. The chicken was flavorful but moist- cooked perfectly. The cabbage with peppers and Brussel sprouts were seasoned with an island spice with a taste fused with the jerked chicken and i just loved it. I couldn't get enough.. i didn't mind eating with plastic utensils, heck i didn't even really notice. It was really that good. Feeling like taking a trip to the islands without leaving Katy? I've been here about 3 times and each time was worth the visit. The food: I have tried the curry chicken which was really good and full of flavor. Ive also tried the shrimp curry over rice. The Shrimp was tender and yummy over the curry rice. Definitely try the hot pepper sauce to spice your food up a bit (warning the sauce is extremely hot) Also make sure you try the "doubles" those are my all time favorite! (Chickpeas) read more

It's probably one of the best curry meals I've ever had. I really enjoy the flavor of curry, but I don't like the "hot" spice it normally comes with. This meal was right on! I am so happy I saw this Gem!!! Especially in katy. I would drive all over Houston and the surrounding areas looking for good island food. Not a fan on the Jamaican food around here. It may be good Jamaican food but I'm not Jamaican and I've had good Jamaican food so it's just not my cup of tea. Seriously lacking. But this is more like it. So many Caribbean places are NOT professional. Their hours ARE NOT CONSISTENT. And The attitude as If your money is the worst thing for them. It's just a breath of fresh air to drive to an establishment during their business hours and they are actually there AND have food!!!!! The food is DELICIOUS!!!! DEEEEEEELICIOUS. I had a shrimp Roti wrapped. And my dad and kids had a chicken roti. Since then. We've ordered take out and I've gotten the bake and salt fish (right on the money) and doubles.
