I've been at Grace Barra Fullerton for about 1.5 months now. I signed up myself, my five year old son, and my five year old niece. I have to say it has been an awesome experience so far! All of us felt very welcomed by the coaches and Professor Justin. They are super patient and helpful in teaching us JiuJitsu. For the Kids, the coach to child ratio here is about 1:4 (1 coach to four kids) which I've noticed at other gyms, can be 1 coach to 8 kids. My child works really well with Coach Mike, but all the coaches are great with kids. I just asked my son what he would tell you about Gracie Barra Fullerton, and he said this: "The instruction is very strait forward and coordinated. The people you spar with are very nice." And then he walked away ~lol~ My son is homeschooling, so he doesn't get a lot of in-person social interaction. Online, yes, but offline, no. I am so glad I tried jiu jitsu for my kid! This is very "hands on" (but no punching, no kicking - more like wrestling). My son is tall, so he feels awkward "sparring" (sorry, I don't know the lingo) with the juniors. No problem for him to join the adults. I had him try both the junior class and the adult class. The junior class was great but the "height thing," so he's more comfortable with the adults. At first, I wasn't sure how the adults would like to have a 13/14-year-old in their class, but it turns out they don't mind. When you watch jiu jitsu for the first time (maybe even the first few times) it might make you uncomfortable because of the close/personal contact. I recommend you try it anyway (or let your kid try it anyway) and then decide. I read a Yelp review somewhere where the reviewer said something about getting uncomfortable to get comfortable. As a mom observing from the bench, that was my experience - my kid, on the mat, was fine with it from the get-go. There are a lot of coaches, and the Professor, on hand to supervise and give you tips and techniques before, during, and after you're "sparring." It is very well organized. The two things I love the most are (1) that my son loves it, and he loves the challenge, even when he gets his "a$$ handed to him" (his words, not mine), and (2) that he's learning what to do if someone tries to grab him IRL. I've been a student there for 3 years, and the level of comfortability and acceptance I've felt at GB Fullerton has been present since day 1 and continues every day. One of my favorite things about GB Fullerton is the diversity of its students. ALL ARE WELCOME. If you're THINKING about trying out Jiu Jitsu and currently researching your options, here are some beginner pros to GB Fullerton: -The mats are cleaned and sanitized. -The cushion on the mats is reinforced with a lot of foam blocks underneath the main mat. This matters when you're 35+ and find yourself on the floor a lot (speaking from personal experience). -The monthly rate is competitive, and there's no cap on how many days you want to train. For adults: you can train 6 days a week if you want (2-3 days is typical though). -During your first week or two, you can borrow CLEAN uniforms until your uniform comes in. So just come in, and they'll get you set up before the class starts. -There are changing rooms and cubbies to store your things. -Bring the biggest water bottle you have and a sweat towel (not mandatory but good to have). -If you're on the mats and feeling confused, ask anyone for help.
