Overrated ice cream - 2/5. The double chocolate was the only decent flavor. Peach was mediocre along with Peanut butter and mocha. I will take Oberweiss or a Klondike bar over this... Also Capanarri's or Hartigan's are way better if you care about a good scoop in the burbs. read more

I love Graeter's and always make a point to stop in when I am in the area. They have some of the best ice cream I've ever tasted. I'd go so far to even say it rivals many of the more popular ice cream franchises. The chocolate chips just melts in your mouth. They are very helpful when it comes to ingredients, which is vey important because I have a peanut allergy. I love ice cream and this is my go-to place on a warm night. They add on and switch flavors monthly, so there's always something new you can try. Their best seller according to their staff is the chocolate raspberry, which I didn't particularly enjoy, but I can see how it's a favorite. The buckeye, cheese crown, and chocolate fudge brownie (monthly flavor) are my favorites. The employees there are great, especially Joe, who gives the BIGGEST scoops of ice cream ever. Parking is sometimes hard, but you just have to make a few rounds around the block and someone is likely to get out. This just might be one of my favorite ice cream places EVER. First of all, the Rasberry Chip ice cream is HEAVENLY. my dad had the peach and said it was great too. With a chocolate dipped waffle cone to come with your icy goodness, everything was perfect! I will say though that there is very limited seating because there are always a ton of people and lines out the door the time that I came. The only drawback of this place is that they also sell their ice cream at grocery stores like the Mariano's near me, so it kind of takes away from how special it is because I could also just buy a pint of it and eat it at home and spend less money overall. That's why I think if you're in the area Cappanari's is really worth it if you want like REALLY quality ice cream. But this place is good too and definitely better than Oberweis or Ben & Jerry's. read more

So I grew up in Northbrook and my wife and I returned to the area for a family celebration. We love to have ice cream on Friday night (long story, but just go with it), and decided to let Yelp find it for us. This Graeters shop is located smack dab in the middle of downtown Northbrook, kiddie corner from Little Louis - the greatest Vienna Hot Dog stand in all of Chicago-land! I was so excited. I used to ride my bike to this part of town to meet my friends, buy comics, play little league and go to Little Louis' and the public library. So I have a big nostalgia thing going on. As for the ice cream, well, if you have ever had Graeters you know it was awesome. I had Buckeye Chocolate Chip and Salted Caramel Chocolate chip in a cup. My wife had peanut butter chocolate chip and banana chocolate chip in a waffle cone. Both fabulous. Except the banana. She loved it. I am not a banana ice cream fan. Place is lovely, but the neighborhood sublime. Trivia note: just up the street is St. Norbert's parochial school. Two of its alumni are well known for their interactions with the Chicago Cubs: Jason Kipnis, 2nd baseman for the Cleveland Indians went there. He made winning the World Series very difficult for the Cubs. Another graduate was Steve Bartman, who caught a ball during the 2003 playoffs and had absolutely no impact on the outcome of the game. We had just finished a 2 star experience at Lucky Fish next to Graeters, and were hoping that their ice cream would save our dining experience for the evening. My wife and I decided that we'd just get some pints from the freezer to take home - and a staff member came out from behind the counter to explain the flavors, what was popular, and her favorites. Driving through the area, had a sweet tooth and found this gem thanks to Yelp. I had the Buckeye Chocolate Chip. Peanut butter, cocoa, peanut butter cookie dough and gourmet bittersweet chocolate chips. Yes please! It was very decadent but not too rich. It was creamy with the right blend of peanut butter and chocolate. I found a pint in the ice cream section at the Jewel, but it's cheaper to just get it at the ice cream shop. My husband had the cinnamon flavor with caramel topping and said it quickly became a favorite flavor combination. My 9 year old had the cookie dough and enjoyed it. I also ordered a cup of coffee. Was in the mood to check out some ice cream and checked out Graeter's in Northbrook. They'll be opening another one in Winnetka this July 2016! They serve a premium ice cream made by the French pot method and the price reflects it. I tried the coffee and was very pleased with the rich creamy flavor. I came here on a Thursday evening with a friend on a warm day in Chicago and had a very nice time. The place was packed around 7pm so we literally were able to get one of their high top tables and so happy we did as we were able to enjoy our ice cream much better. I tried one of their cherry with chocolate flavors and it was way too sweet and for a second got worried that I wouldn't be able to find anything I like. So I went with the classic chocolate with chocolate fudge and it literally had pieces of fudge in it and it was very delicious. I also give a rating to an ice cream shop on the freshness of their waffle cones and their waffle cones were definitely on point and oh so very enjoyable. I think the place is definitely one of the best in the area to get your summertime ice cream cravings out of the way. I have to find another flavor next time but it's definitely very fresh and good quality almost like a gelato because it's so creamy. My only complaint is that it's not cheap for $4 for just one scoop of ice cream but that's okay you get what you pay for and if I'm in the area I'll definitely stop by again. The people working here seem friendly enough so that's good and they have a nice little park across the street so you can always take your ice cream to go if it gets a little on the crowded side. I was glad that a Graeters ice cream shop had opened in suburban Chicago. Originally, they are from Ohio. I have had Graeters in Indianapolis but not in Ohio. Anyway, so I knew what kind of ice cream they had. I had their Peach Melba Sundae which was super delicious and likable. The Peach ice cream which is seasonal was smooth and creamy. A scoop of it was placed on a piece of Shortbread and it was topped with Raspberry sauce and almonds. Boom, it was flavor explosion in my mouth. I couldn't get enough of it. I usually don't go for pre-set concoctions. I like to make my own but this Sundae was well worth the try. The menu has decent variety and the prices are not bad (sort of on the high side but comparable to the likes of Oberweiss and till some extent, Baskin Robbins). The restaurant itself was nice and clean. It's decent size place with seating available inside and outside. The staff is courteous and we had no issues with the service. Go here if you haven't yet. Graeter's Ice Cream, was it good? Yes. Was it memorable? Not so much. Would I go back? Sure...it's just not something I would crave. So, I've been on a major ice cream kick this summer! And a vacation out to the east coast kind of set my ice cream standards a bit higher than normal. Graeter's definitely has good quality ice cream...and I would hope so for about $4/scoop! They have your standard flavors, low sugar options, and sorbets. I got the coconut chocolate chip ice cream in a waffle cone and I sure did enjoy my sweet treat! :) I like that the chocolate chips aren't your typical chocolate chips out of a bag. This was more like chunks of really good chocolate. I knocked off a star for the service. Although it wasn't horrible...the people working there weren't super friendly. The location is totally in a family friendly area. So, I expect a bit more friendliness. Smile...say hello...not that hard. I knocked off another star because the size of my scoop of ice cream was small. I paid $4 and it wasn't even a proper scoop size. Would I go back, sure. I enjoyed the coconut chocolate chip. It is just too expensive for ice cream. Baskin and Robins honestly is better, flavor to flavor. The place is attractive, feels gourmet, but really, it is just ice cream, french pot or not. The counter/check out is really disorganized and runs like a train wreck when it is crowded. I am confused by the location planning. Stumbled upon this gem of an ice cream place one day while I was looking for a night snack and I was not disappointed. There are so many great flavors for a really reasonable price. All of the staff was very friendly and the store itself is very clean. Their sorbets are made of real fruit and are just so flavorful. I had the lemon and mango the first time I went and wow it was amazing. I also recommend the hazelnut gelato because it is SO rich and the flavors are amazing. My little brother loves this place. Him and his friends go all the time after school. One evening he finally convinced me to try it out. The line was long, but it was worth the wait. Really good neighborhood ice cream shop. The ice cream is so creamy and its home made in small batches. They really use quality ingredients. I also like that the ice cream is not too overly sugary. The chocolate chips that are used have a soft consistency to it. Its not like frozen chocolate chips. This adds a very nice texture to the ice cream base. If I can give minus stars for service, I would. This is the second time I've come to this Graeter's since the quarantine began and I NEVER want to come here again. The workers here are like nasty jail guards, telling people where, what, when. The worst is the I'm-so-much-better-than-you-because-I-work-here team leader (the one who looks 17 with the bandana on her head) who barks orders at you. "Stand in the box; don't cross the blue line"--with not one ounce of friendliness or politeness. She not once said please to me. To make matters worse, she was more courteous to two Caucasian women walked in after I and I heard the please--to them. I've dealt with this team leader twice now and both times I felt prejudiced against. Both times I felt very unwelcomed here. I ended up just leaving without placing an order because I felt so disgusted. I have been to many restaurants and stores since the quarantine began and I have NEVER been treated like this anywhere else. This is a place I've recommended to many of my friends, which I very much regret. I know that this is a time where caution needs to be taken very seriously but to be treated in such degrading manners is unacceptable. There is nothing wrong with common courtesy--the workers here need to show some. Whoever is doing the training for these employees needs to do a better job here. I will never go back and I will tell EVERYONE I know what happened here and how I was treated. This really sucks because minus the service, the ice cream is so good. read more

I just tried this place out after seeing it on Yelp a few days back... Wow, that's some good ice cream! So creamy. Probably the best I've had, (and I don't throw superlatives around lightly!) Plus the service was very good. They had 4 or 5 people behind the counter taking care of the customers so the line went fast. And they were all friendly. They have tables inside, benches outside, and there is the park across the street where lots of people sat and ate their ice cream on a beautiful summer night. The only negative I can think of is the price. It's steep. But for this ice cream, I'd be willing to pay that once in awhile. read more

I used to think that Oberweis was the place to be. That was before I had my first Graeter's. They have so many unique and seasonal flavors. It's never the same. Handcrafted. We've heard from many that Graeters is great so were excited to give it a try. With nut allergies in the family, the first thing we did was tell the server that we had allergies. At most places, we generally brace for shrugged shoulders or an eye roll (I'm looking at you Baskin Robbins on Lake/Milwaukee). We were blown away by how accommodating Graeters was. The server said that their procedure for allergies is that they wash their hands, get out a new tub of ice cream (even for trying a sample), and sanitize the scoop. As we were deciding on flavors, the manager came over. She herself has a nut allergy so she served us. I noticed that she got out cups and spoons from a new box. She also told us that she could only offer whipped cream from a can because they didn't have a new container left today of their homemade whip to scoop from (they have homemade whip?!). With our minds greatly at ease, we ordered. The ice cream was really good. We often get store-bought cookies and cream and cookie dough. The Graeters versions tasted much better - they were really fresh and there were large chunks of oreo and cookie dough. Strawberry was fresh and light. Not cheap - $3.50 for kiddie cone, $4.25 for single scoop, $6.25 for sundae (2 scoops and toppings). But the portions were big and some of us had trouble finishing. We'll definitely be back again for a special treat! read more
