I really like gramercy Pilates. I would describe it as a casual, no frills Pilates spot which I have found very refreshing. The instructors are great and the class sizes are small so they really pay attention and make corrections. This is a great pilates spot! I went in for the Butt Camp Reformer/Tower class w Sasha and I gotta say, it worked out my entire body, not just the bum lol! Esp my core, wow, was sore for the next couple of days. I havent been to a pilates class since the pandemic, and was recovering from a surgery and she was able to accommodate me without any issues. Despite being a beginner, she gave wonderful direction and came up to help fix my form as she saw me struggle. He has a horrible, condescending attitude, and replies to emails at 5 AM in the morning, expecting it not to be buried deep in someone's mailbox. If a customer has a request, just reply yes or no. Don't question them with a snobby attitude and show some respect to your customers About the classes, Aliza has a great personality and was able to adjust the difficulty based on experience level; Brittany led a great workout that left me sore for days but the instructions seemed a bit rookie. read more

I took 3 intermediate/advanced reformer/tower classes here. I've been doing pilates for a long time, and the first class did not impress me at all. The instructor seemed disinterested and the exercises were all over the place. Still, I went back for 2 more classes, same level and same format. Different instructors each time, but no format to the class and no flow whatsoever. My impression was these were apprentices with zero teaching experience, and no knowledge of the foundation of the Pilates method. At one point I actually felt bad for the teacher, as she did not know how to cue the exercise she was trying to teach at all, it was obvious she was in way over her head. I would not return to this studio even for a free class. The space itself is dark and a little grimy. read more

I got a pretty affordable Groupon to try 5 classes, and am three classes into my pack, and to be honest, pretty disappointed. I've taken two Intermediate/Advanced classes (one a full hour, another 45 minutes) and the Pilates Butt Camp class. The Int/Adv are very, very easy. It was a shame because the 45 min class seemed to be 30 minutes of stretching with only 2 or so moments where we started to feel the burn. Most 45 minute classes in other studios are very intense - pack more intensity in a small amount of time. In general, the classes don't feel well planned out or holistic, skimping on some body areas. Neither teachers asked the class if they wanted to concentrate on a certain body area, either. Just didn't feel like a work out. The Pilates Butt Camp class was a bit more challenging, but, again, concentrated on just one area, so hard to justify for full body workout. I wouldn't suggest investing in a big pack here if you are an advanced pilates student. The space itself is clean and it's interesting to work on the hybrid tower/Reformer machines, but there are definitely other studios in the area that will really help shape and tone your body. read more

I did my Comprehensive pilates teacher training program at Gramercy Pilates.   The program director and my teacher was Kim Fielding. Her knowledge and ability to translate the complexities in a very understandable way is exemplary. She created a great cohesive learning environment by providing guidance and constructive feedback, whenever necessary. It is one thing to train the students but completely different ball game preparing teachers. Kim values the opinions of others and lets you develop on your own while still staying true to the teachings of Joseph Pilates. If I have to pinpoint one take away, I'd say she has provided me with the teaching tools/practices necessary to be a compassionate, empathetic and confident pilates instructor. I could not have wished for a better teacher and guide. read more

I try not to base ONE off incidents with my overall rating of a place I really enjoy going to. I will still give this place 5 stars because I love the instructors/ studio and will continue to be a customer here. With that said. I was comped a free class due to the complete absence of an instructor, Tai. Today's 7:15am class did not start until closer to 7:30am. A HUGE thank you to Veronica (I think that is her name) for stepping in and instructing the three of us. You saw how frustrated we were and ensured we had a great class. KUDOS. I understand that 'unforeseen' things happen and people are late. However, I made myself available to commute from New Jersey to make it to class at 7am, well before the class started. As a customer, who is spending a pretty penny for a 45 minute class the lateness/absence of an instructor is completely unprofessional. Additionally, the woman who was instructing a private lesson in the front of the studio could've been a little more understanding with the woman who was showing her frustration to the receptionist. The issue is that the instructor didn't show up to a studio you work at. Unfortunately, in this case, the customer is right. read more

DON'T DO IT!!! Don't do it! All the classes are full! I stupidly purchased a 5-class deal on Groupon without looking at the schedule. Literally. Every. Single. Class. Was. Full. Until. My. Groupon. Expired. There was something called "EXO Chair" and I would have even taken it, but it did not count towards my deal - would have had to pay extra for that! Ha! I asked for a refund because literally all of the classes were full, and they said no. They would not even put it towards a private session or anything. I was the lucky winner of a Fitness Package raffle at a social justice event, and one of the items included a free 55-minute Private Pilates lesson with instructor Audree Morrison at Gramercy Pilates Fitness. The hospitality I received when I entered Gramercy Pilates Fitness impressed me. I was greeted warmly, shown the bathrooms, changing rooms, and offered tea as I waited for my lesson to begin. The space was also very clean and polished. I haven't done pilates in a couple of years, and when I have, it's always been on a mat. Gramercy Pilates Fitness takes it up a few notches with their intricate machines. You really do feel like a warrior as you use the machines to add resistance and challenge to each aspect of the workout. Audree was an excellent instructor: informative, encouraging and personable. She took the time to explain exactly what we were doing, why, and help me navigate the machines with ease and confidence. I thoroughly enjoyed the lesson and would highly recommend this studio. read more

Nice studio. I recently found this studio on Class pass. Location and class times are convenient. It seems they offer all levels of classes. I've been practicing Pilates and other movement classes for 7+years so I tend to gravitate towards the intermed/advanced reformer+ tower classes which prove to interesting. They also offer mat classes, and what it looks like to be boxing and personal training. I've taken classes with 3 or 4 instructors now. Everyone is welcoming and able to troubleshoot if students have injury or need modifications. read more

I came to this studio a few times and took classes with several different teachers. Each Pilates class here allows 10 students, which is more than many other studios. I took classes with Hyacinth, and she was pretty good. She gives clear instructions and walks around to help each student. I took a butt camp pilates class with their owner, Ernie. It was a really really really bad experience. We had 10 students in the class, half of us were new either to the studio or to pilates. Instead of helping everyone with our postures and positions, he paid fully attention to one student who was new to pilates. I understood the student was new, but she was really not the only one. Ernie was helping her stretching and chit chatting with her during the class. The time he spent on other students was no more than five minutes in total. He also helped that new student's friend a little. His answers to my and other students' questions were really short and not helpful. I saw a few other students were struggling with their positions, he just ignored them all. I feel I was listening into someone's private session. It was seriously rude. I don't think I will ever go back to his class. read more

I have taken Pilates elsewhere and thought I'd try out this studio with a group on. The instructors are all caring and skilled, but the studio is a bit impractical. There are a few reasons why I wouldn't return all centering around noise. They insist on playing the radio! The radio! with bubble gum music and talking DJs, so you strain to hear the instructors who walk along the 5 reformers. I've never been to a Pilates place that sounds like a gym. Other noise distractions are if you use the reformer nearest reception, there is no attempt to speak quietly, so again you are straining to hear the instructions. When pointed out (two different times) they say, "Some people like to have music." It seems to me as long as "some people," complain they should be more Pilates like and care. Then, right opposite the Reformers are private classes with instructors facing out towards the group. So you have to tune out his instructions and listen to your instructors. The studio is certainly big enough to organize in a way that makes it easier. They just don't seem to care. read more

I have been taking pilates all over the city now with various different online deals so I am pretty aware of what is out there. I think this is pretty much the favorite studio that I have been to so far. I've had seven classes so far and no two classes have been alike. First of all, the studio is really beautiful, it is in a loft like space with high ceilings, brick walls, and wooden floors. It is extremely clean and smells nice because they use tea tree scented cleaning products. I have taken a lot of classes with Carin, whom I really love. She is very patient, takes your special needs into consideration, and is constantly checking to make sure that you are doing the moves right. She also takes time to explain things unlike some pilates instructors who can seem like they are reading a memorized script. She often teaches in the middle of the day, which is hard for me to get to but I do recommend going in the middle of the day if you can because it is much quieter and more peaceful in there and you have a much better chance of getting a class. My one complaint is that it can be hard to get into classes. That is not really their fault and may just speak to the fact that their business is good right now, but it is often weeks before I can find an open, after work class. I often sign up to be on the waiting list, and sometimes I get in, but it would be nice if there was more availability. Then again, it would not be as peaceful. So... there's the trade off. I would also say that if you are very advanced in pilates, you might want to take a private OR try another place, as their classes only go up to intermediate... this is fine for me as I am still working on some old injuries and problems but someone in tiptop shape might find them a bit too easy. read more

I've been coming to Gramercy Pilates since January 2016 (approx) due to a lower back herniation. My doctors recommended I pursue Pilates to strengthen my core as a way to provide greater support to my back/trunk. In July 2016, and I am doing great. I've done a combination of private sessions with Maysa and Rhys, and classes with Viktoriya and Ernie. Private sessions are spectacular. Maysa rocks - great sense of humor, clear instruction, excellent progression in difficulty of exercises and variety of equipment. I've never had "abs" before - and now, all of a sudden I'm not embarrassed to take my shirt off (how vain, I know). Rhys has been great too - he has a different style, and keeps your session moving. Pretty great instructor as well. My group classes have been a wonderful experience as well. They are usually between four to eight people in the class. Ernie's butt camp class kicks my butt (pun intended) in a way that allows me to be participating in it and not feeling incompetent or useless. It strikes a great balance and Ernie is great at giving clear and precise instructions. At one hour, it is well suited for the intensity. Plus, Ernie is clearly present at the studio. Owner managed, Ernie (and Tommy) are mindful of keeping their studio in pristine conditions, operating and otherwise. read more

I took a reformer class here today and didn't feel any muscle activation at all the whole class. It's not that it was too hard or too easy - it was hard in all the wrong ways. I felt pain in my neck, lower back and hip joints but no muscle burn. Maybe the problem was there was no real warmup, other than a quick rollup. The instructor couldn't figure out why either. I had the pleasure of having Kim as my Teacher throughout my Pilates Teacher Training Program at Gramercy Pilates. She is very knowledgeable and has a tremendous teaching persona. Kim welcomes and encourages any and all questions, and is very happy to share her skills and experiences with all of her students. I have felt nothing but prepared since graduating from the program. I have learned so much from Kim, not only with Pilates, but also about how to treat people. She is so kind and loving to everyone. Having never done Pilates on the reformer, this place was a dream come true. Non-intimidating atmosphere and knowledgeable instructors made it a really great experience for me. The classes do book in advance because there are only six slots open for each, but this just helped put me commit to a regular schedule. The customer service is also amazing--I booked a package and by accident signed myself up for a gyrotonics private lesson instead of a Pilates one. Without hesitating the front desk staff (one of whom may have been the owner) just said to do the gyrotonics lesson, see how it was and then reschedule a Pilates session at no extra charge (these cost $195 a pop). I went home to discover it was, indeed, my mistake so I never booked the other Pilates lesson, but that speaks so well of their customer-is-always-right philosophy. They've been 100% accommodating every single time I've had any kind of question or confusion about anything. I'm addicted to Pilates now because of this place! read more

Just email them the time slots I want, then maybe 30 mins later, I got the confirmation for all the classes. I really enjoyed Ashleigh's class. She's very patient, clear and friendly. I would love to take more classes with her if the normal rate is not that high. One thing I didn't like this place is the other instructor Ernie. I had one class with him. It was like a waste of time. He cannot stop bashing other studios by saying that they're also just doing choreography, not really realize the real pilates. Took a group reformer class here and had a very rude experience with the instructor. Everything started off pretty normal and I was working through all the moves, but in the middle of explaining directions to everyone, the teacher turned to me and loudly announced that I looked really angry to the whole class and asked me why I was angry. It was incredibly distracting, rude and offensive ... and not true. So while I wasn't angry before, I certainly was then! I was disappointed that the classes were booked a month out, so I had to wait a month to use my classes and then cram them in within 10 days before the deal expired. The studio is tiny and only offers classes for 6 people at a time. The teachers were great and I loved the class, but the infrequency and the difficulty of getting into classes has deterred me from being a regular. I have 3 issues with GPF that prevent me from giving it a better review: 1. The schedule sucks - just one beginner class after work each week at 8pm? Ridic. That is way too late and those of us who want to take more than one class weekly without interrupting our weekends to do pilates are out of luck. 2. Cleaning of the machines - they reuse the same towel over and over again between clients. Yea I assume that's bleach in the spray bottle but still, do you want to put your face on a machine that's been wiped with a dingy, not white damp towel that like 10 other people have used? Just plain gross. They either need to give each client a clean towel or just use paper towels. 3. Cost. I've signed up for private classes at a different studio in the neighborhood that gets good yelp reviews. If I like it there, I'm switching because they are a lot less expensive AND have much better more flexible class schedules. read more

I'm fairly new to pilates and have had my share of good/bad experiences with several studios in NYC with Class Pass and I have to say that this studio is one of the nicest in terms of friendliness, nice staff, good instructors, and good equipment. What I also like is that I don't get the pilates snobbishness that I feel exists in a lot of pilates studios. The instructors are very gracious, kind and good at working with new students. There is stuff going on while class is in session but it doesn't bother me since I'm usually focused on my workout. read more

I did my teacher training here with Kim Fielding and it is difficult to put into words the magnitude of her warmth, knowledge, diligence, and kindness. You can ask her any question no matter how "dumb" you might think it is and she focuses and spends time until she knows that you understand and feel comfortable. You can tell Kim is an expert in Pilates by the details to form, history, and her ability to teach to an array of students. She creates an extremely positive, happy, and safe learning environment and is able to tailor her teaching depending on your experience. She is one of the sweetest people I have ever come across and whether you are working with her in teacher training or Pilates lessons, I can confidently say you are in AMAZING hands and you will feel better physically and mentally after spending time with her. read more

While he has a unique sense of humor and brand of tough love, he has an unparalleled focus on technique that has saved me from a repeat stress fracture in my hip and really helped strengthen my glutes! My mom has been a Pilates teacher for years and this was the first studio I found that lived up to my expectations. The one teacher I had, Alix, was so wonderful. I felt like even though there were 4/5 in the class it was almost like a private class because of the attention she gave to each of us. My mediocre rating is because of their inflexibility. They refused to let me use my remaining class that I purchased on groupon because it expired. If I were running a business, I would let the student take the expired class, which is never full anyway, and make them happy. Instead, the owners said I just couldn't use it, with no real apology. They need to make more classes available at different times for the various levels if they want to put an expiration date on a series. I've lived in New York for 3 years now and this has never happened. Every studio I have been to whether its yoga, pilates, spinning, etc has been extremely flexible and understanding when classes expire if the times don't fit your schedule, especially if its just one class. In short, I agree with previous comments that I would absolutely join if they had a better system for class scheduling. read more

I'm a pretty serious Pilates practitioner and have been taking classes for almost 3 year now. I take about 5 classes a week (sometimes more!) and have been to about a dozen different studios in the city. Gramercy is my favorite by far. Pros: They have a lot of different kinds of classes with a variety of instructors. Some of the classes are geared towards beginners and others to intermediate and advanced levels. This has been good for me as my strength and knowledge have increased over the past three years. The owners Ernie and Tommy are very responsive to suggestions and have added classes based on requests from students. They also keep the equipment well maintained and have added more machines and props as needed. They have the tower/reformers that allow for both tower/mat work as well as reformer and jumpboard all in one class. I like this set up better than other studios. They also have a variety of other machines and props some for classes and some for privates. Really great and experienced instructors. My favorites in the current group class line up are Hyacinth (very precise, and will push you to do your best), Kim (warm, magical and giving), Bailey (very clear instruction and easy going). They give a lot of individual attention and want to make sure you are safe. The desk staff is very responsive and helpful in scheduling or other questions. They answer emails promptly! It used to be more difficult to schedule classes, but they added more classes and equipment, so I haven't had difficulty in a while with that. The location is very convenient, close to Union Sq. They offer deals regularly and they are on Classpass, both of which help me not break my budget while staying on track with my fitness goals. Cons: Sometimes Classpass students sign up for a class above their level and are in over their head which can be distracting to other students. (the instructors are very attentive and always make sure beginners are safe), but if you are signing up make sure you are in an appropriate class for your experience and strength level. Loudness, sometimes if there are a lot of classes going on or other trainings on weekends it can get loud. They do play music, which I like. You can always ask to have it turned off if it bothers you. Overall way more pros than cons! read more

Actually - it would be 5 stars since Steve is the BEST. I've followed him through 3 studios and many years... he kicks my butt but I still go back for more. The staff is great - awesome pilates instructors who know their craft. The studio itself is also a very nice place to do pilates... BUT - the reason for the FOUR (4) stars is because I am just just so sad that they allow other trainers and students to walk around the studio in "outside shoes.." I have never in all the years where I have done pliates or yoga been to a place that allows for external shoes to be trekked thru the studio.. just ewww & gross... when i mentioned this to Ernie the owner, he reassured me that was not happening. But I have witnessed it multiple times and obviously, not enforced. read more

I quit Equinox and now just do 2 sessions a week at GPF. Alix and Ye Ra are amazing, dedicated, Smart teachers really interested in helping you learn which muscle to use to control which movement and how to compensate and modify. Ernie's advanced class whips you in to shape real fast once you're at that level. Everyone there is really nice and helpful and it's a good location. I never would have gotten in to such good shape if I'd stayed at Equinox. read more

I have had a range of experiences here, having committed to 10 classes with a Groupon (making the price quite reasonable). I wasn't too impressed until tonight, when I attended Helen's class. She is dynamite and actually corrects the postures of the students and clearly demonstrates and explains what you are meant to be doing!
