This guy K was literally abusive to my son today. Pulled out a drill and put it to my sons neck and was acting as though he had some serious mental health issues and wasn't right. He was not even communicating without screaming and kept coming at my son then pulled out a knife from his pocket. This guy ruined my sons car and said it was like that which is not true as we just purchased the vehicle and were connecting a backup camera. He unscrewed the license plate and broke the screws too. I would not step foot into that place unless I had law enforcement with me. Rude, obnoxious, abusive and angered was this man who was Asian but I don't know his name. I would never recommend ANYONE here!!! I hope he gets arrested for his conduct soon, as it was absolutely unacceptable behavior!! Far from a professional business. This is what America is about, one guy in a tiny garage fixing things for a price that makes sense, working on his own terms (cash or check only)...no big corporate store driven by greed, just one man making his living with his skill set. Folks, this is really American business at its best. Fifteen years ago, I needed a repair to the tape deck of my 1994 Volvo. I took it to Mr. K. at Gran Prix Auto Stereo. He had a small dog and storefront in an alley in Culver City. He fixed it cheaply and well. It still works. I still have the same car, and wanted better sound. I was pleased to find that Mr. K. was still around. He has a new dog now, but still the same place and the same great knowledge and service. Most places you pay for a shiny store front and the salary of a buttoned-down corporate glad hander (aka a salesperson) who never touches the tools. None of this at Mr. K's, just competence and a great price. He added four speakers to my car, finished in under his quote, and two hours faster than he said he would, which allowed me to beat traffic. I rarely write reviews, but I strongly recommend his shop. read more

When my car got broken into last week, the first people that I turned to for help was Kondo Motors. I knew that even if THEY couldn't install an alarm for me, they would know someone that could. And sure enough, Chris didn't disappoint. Immediately after I explained my situation to him, he referred me to Grand Prix Auto Stereo, and he said to speak to Mr. Kojima. I called Mr. Kojima after 10am that same day and told him what happened. He said that he could definitely install an alarm for me and despite my boss's misgivings, thinking it would take an entire day to install the system, Mr. Kojima reassured me that it would only take a few hours. I hauled my ass down there pronto. It was a little hard to find b/c there were no signs for Grand Prix Auto Stereo from Washington Place. I had to call Mr. Kojima, circle back and pull in next to the Elks Lodge and look around for Mr. Kojima. Luckily, he wasn't hard to find. He was standing outside with his blue cap and blue shirt. We discussed what needed to be done and I decided to get automatic doors with the alarm (yes, my car is that old). The whole process took about five hours and then last Saturday, I went back to get an antenna installed. He finished that in less than 2 hours. It's a small shop and he only takes cash or checks. But, he knows what he's doing and he does great work. I'd recommend him to anyone that needs this kind of work done on their cars. Hopefully I won't have to go back anytime soon, but if I do, I know I can trust Mr. Kojima. Thanks, again! (He was even sweet enough to organize all my junk in the trunk. I think he charges fair prices and appears to be skillful and know what he's talking about. My friends and I recently replaced the battery in my car and I stupidly didn't know that in doing so, my alarm would reset itself and thanks to an irresponsible owner that owned my car before the guy I bought it from, there was no longer any remote. Anyway, I freaked out and finally figured out how to override the alarm but needed it to stop going off every time I tried to use it, and I also wanted a remote, so I started hunting for options. I took my car to the dealer and they told me to take it somewhere else, if I wanted to save a ton of money. So I drove back home and kept on hunting. Came across this page on Yelp and thought it sounded excellent, so I called him up right away and he was very friendly (he went by "K" but I can assume it was Mr. Kojima). Told me I could bring the car in at a time that was convenient for me, so I did. He worked really fast, really well, and did it for really cheap. I expected to pay 5 times what he charged me for the service (40 dollars to remove my alarm since it was outdated and there was no way to order a remote). He's even offered to install a new full-feature alarm system at a great price ($180) if I ever want it; just have to bring it back. I don't think I'll need it but at least I can drive my car again, worry-free, thanks to K and his great, affordable service. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! read more

I went to Mr. Kojima because of the reviews I read and he did not disappoint. I couldn't be happier with Mr. Kojima's installation of my new cd receiver (a Pioneer DEH-P4000UB I got on sale online iPod-ready for $139.97) and the re-mounting of the after-market speakers the previous owner installed with tape! I liked how disapproving Mr. Kojima was of the mess of wires and shotty speaker mounting the other guy left me in my Nissan 200SX. He explained to me what they were meant for with out dumbing it down, which, as a girl, I always appreciate. He charged me $100 for the whole job which saved me at least $60 over a quote I got from Ed & Al's. FYI Grand Prix was hard to find because it's not located on directly on Washington Pl, but adjacent to the Elk's Lodge parking lot in the back. Professor, the little chihuahua, is also on hand to greet you. I highly recommend Grand Prix for the great work and fair price. read more

I can't say enough about this place and Mr. K. I won't write a 7 page essay about my experience but he told me it was one of the most difficult jobs he has even done, and I believe it. I was told by 5 other places that it was actually impossible. I switched out my factory Audi stereo for an after-market iPhone/iPod Bluetooth wired mircophone (handsfree) etc unit. It took a little time because he had to actually make a custom kit for it, the end result is like it was meant to be in my car. Not only is it seamless perfect work, but he charged me less than half of the other places I went to (of course they gave up). I gave him an extra 30 bucks because I felt guilty it was so cheap. I came here to get a backup camera installed... As soon as I got there, Mr K SNAPPED on me because I asked a question and he told me only he can ask the questions. Immediately it all felt wrong and suspect. He took apart my license plate, broke a screw and stated it was the cars fault. When I told him to put it back the way it was when I came, he again SNAPPED only this time pulled a drill up towards my neck. I smacked his arm away and he got in my face until I showed him I wasn't taking his shit... He started reaching for his back pocket insinuating that he was going to pull a knife on me so I snapped back and grabbed onto my knife. I told him his service is garbage and that he's just a little punk and that I wasn't even moderately afraid of him. When he realized he wasn't scaring me he started backing up and crawled into his little shop area. This dude is a joke, his service and approach to the entire situation couldn't have been much worse. I literally almost caught a case for beating this dude when he pulled a drill to my neck. Save yourself the time and pain and avoid this guy/his shop in every way you can. Alright, so I have to admit, I really, really wanted to give this place a 5 star review at first. I genuinely like Mr K -- I wish he could have been my uncle when I was a kid to teach me about electrical circuits and give me awkward advice about women. Essentially, Gran Prix is a case study on one of the core tenets of engineering -- you can only have two of the following: cheap, reliable and fast. The work here was fast and cheap (he installed door actuators and an alarm in about 3 hours for less than $300), but not really that reliable. The door actuators he installed burned out in about two months. Also, the alarm he installed is kind of finicky and the keyless entry broke in about 3 months. To Mr K's credit, whenever I went back, he fixed everything that was wrong at no cost. I even tried to pay him and he gave me a look like I was crazy for even suggesting it. I'll put it this way -- if you are looking for an inexpensive fix, Mr K is up for the task. Maybe you just want keyless entry or want a cheap auxiliary hookup for your stereo. He certainly will work with you there and can get you where you want for less money than most other places. But if you are a technogeek like I am and want a lot of flashy features that you can rely on for a long time, you really should put up the extra cash and look elsewhere. read more

I bought a new car stereo on Amazon and tried to install it myself through online instructional videos. Five hours later, I had made an absolute mess of things and had taken apart half of my dashboard and was lucky my car was still operational. I researched through Yelp and brought my car to Gran Prix. As soon as I arrived, there was no wait as he had told me over the phone. Mr. K took a look at what I had done, and said he would fix it if I would promise never to try again like this again. He spent the next 2 hours un-doing my mistakes and then installed the radio, which worked perfectly by the time he was done. He even meticulously put my dashboard back together like it was new. After all of that, he only asked me to pay him $100 inclusive of the parts he retrieved from his shop, which I happily did and even threw in a generous tip for his trouble. My car stereo had been acting up (specifically, the left speaker would cut out when I was listening to my iPod). Initially, I thought I might be able to repair it. Alas, even though my suspicion of the problem was proved correct (a wire had come out of its soldering), I found my fumbling hands unable to make the necessary repair. So I looked here on Yelp to see if someone could help. So, I called Mr. Kojima because of the reviews I read here. His place, as the other reviewers noted, is not that easy to find (Pull into the Elk Lodge parking lot and make a left in the alley) and it does look a bit shady once you get there. HOWEVER, Mr. Kojima (and his feisty little Chihuahua) could not be nicer and he seemed to immediately understand my problem. He just told me to come back the next day. I did, and he even found something I'd screwed up by trying to repair it myself. 20 bucks later, my stereo was working great and I have nothing but good things to say about this little hole-in-the-wall stereo place. It's a one man shop in a tiny garage, Kay is the owner & mechanic there, he installed an aux cable 3.5mm headphone jack into my 2002 BMW. Once he opened up my dash, told me it would take an extra hour over what he originally anticipated (I had read online that the BMW's built prior to september 2002 were particularly hard to add an aux cable). He didn't charge for me for the extra time/effort! He was a solid $100 cheaper than the quotes I was getting in both the west LA (where I live) and in pasadena (where I work). I had a stereo installed from a previous business on Washington St. a year ago and they went out of business just when I started having problems with my stereo. So I YELPED and found Mr.K. That was cool enough because I am called K-Mann. He gave a once over on my car and amp and then proceeded to test wires and take out the stereo looking for the problem. He knows electronics. Within 1.5 hrs. He was done and my radio was fixed. He then explained what the problem was and even gave me an additional part that made the connection better. Tricky to get to. . . . He is in the alley off of Washington Place not on the main street. If anyone doesn't give him 5 stars they a just some picky /&$@(!!!!! Holes. As much as I hate to leave this review, I have to leave it. I've known Mr. K since I was a kid. He was close with my brother and he's worked on my car(s) MANY times before. A few months ago, he installed new headlight assemblies, and at first glance, they looked great(I DID notice that the molding around the lights weren't as flush as they could have been, but I figured he knew what he was doing and and that they were fine.) Well, two months later it rained and water got into one of the headlight assemblies. Thinking it would be an easy thing to rectify, I took it back to Mr. K. I didn't even get the chance to explain the issue thoroughly when he BLEW UP!. He refused to even LOOK at it, and then started yelling about how it was MY fault for buying an aftermarket part( which were new and off Amazon with GLOWING reviews) He FINALLY agreed to look at the headlight( continuing his rant regarding the purchase whilst doing so) It was obvious that there were gaps in the installation, which he neither acknowledged nor took responsibility for, but I was NOT going to argue with him. I've subsequently taken it to another shop and the breach had NOTHING to do with the assembly- it was the installation that was substandard. I will NEVER go back. Mr. K, (if you're reading this, and you're most likely not) if you're working on cars at this point as a hobby, fine, but charging people and then not standing behind your own work is unacceptable. So far so good. "K" or Mr. Kojima is a down to earth, knows what he is doing guy. Fair prices. UPDATE PLEASE READ! He tries to keep your old parts to sell on E-Bay WITHOUT asking! Other reviewers had the same thing happen to them, so read theirs, as well. "K" does know how to do a BASIC car radio install well, but, my last visit wasn't as pleasant as the first. I was replacing my old Alpine head unit (stolen) with a new one. I wanted to add the Alpine PXA-H100 processor and Bluetooth, as well. Negotiated a fair price (Same as Al and Eds). He went to work and called a several hours later and said the car was ready.... No processor installed, he insisted that I didn't need it. The truth was, it was too complicated for him to install. But, he told me I didn't need it. Then charged me the full price. I wasn't happy because of the uninstalled processor. He claimed that I was only paying $60, because the insurance company was paying the rest. I don't like when people squeeze more money because they feel insurance money is "free" money, it's not. I pay a monthly premium for insurance, so it is still my money! Then I noticed that "K" pulled out my old iPod adaptor and didn't give it back to me (the new unit has it included in the head). He told me that it was old and not worth anything. I almost let it go as I was driving home, but something wasn't right the way he was acting and insisting, ad nauseum, it was "worthless." I went back and demanded it back, because it was mine and I paid for it!!! That is when his tempers flared and got defensive and argumentative (dead giveaway of someone who is guilty) and told me that he was going to have to charge me $20 more because that was why he gave me a "low" price in the first place!!!! I couldn't believe he was holding my own equipt. ransom! I ended up getting the piece back without paying anything more and sold it on E-Bay for $125 dollars!!!!! This guy was up to no good. Looks like the "troubled economy" gets the "best of 'em!" I am still upset about his backwards behavior, but his install was very clean and the system and bluetooth work well, so I'm leaving high marks on the skill, but beware of his tactics. I found out about Grand Prix through Yelp. I had been looking to have a amplified subwoofer put into the trunk of my 2010 3 Series BMW. I called a few places first for price quotes - Best Buy (just as a last resort), Al & Ed's, California Car Sounds, and Grand Prix. All of them quoted me around the same price - about $100 for installation and about $40-60 for parts (power and audio cables), except for Al & Ed's who quoted me $200 for install and another $75 for parts. I ended up picking Grand Prix since it had pretty good Yelp reviews and was close. Grand Prix is a 1 person operation from what I could tell. Just Mr. Kojima, a Japanese man in his 60's who gives off kind of a skilled handyman vibe. I called Grand Prix on a Wednesday to see when I could make a weekend appointment. I could only do weekends since I work during the week. Mr. K told me that Saturday was a little hectic, so I offered to come in a week later. He told me that would be great. He took my name and phone number and told me he gets to the shop at 8 am and I could just stop in whenever. He told me based on my description of what I needed done over the phone it would take about 2 1/2 hours. On the day of my appointment, I drove over there at about 8:15 am. The place is located about 1/4 block east of the Sepulveda and Washington intersection (where Tito's Taco's is). It was a little hard to find like the Yelpers said. I ended up following the instructions of one Yelper who advised to turn into the Elks Lodge parking lot (on the south side of the street) and taking a left into the alley. That was definitely the proper way to get to the shop. There aren't any signs for the place visible from the street, but once you turn into the alley you'll see some auto bays built into the side of the alley wall on the left. There was a small sign by the first bay identifying it as Grand Prix. The place appeared to consist of just the one bay run by Mr. K. The bay itself had stacks of parts inside and you couldn't pull in, it looked almost like a storage facility for car audio parts, so I just parked into the alley. I saw Mr. K inside, identified myself, showed him what I needed done, and at about 8:30 or so walked home to wait for the job to be done. I called back at around 11:30 since I hadn't heard back from the shop and wanted to check on how the car was doing. Mr. K let me know that he had hooked the whole thing up and that it worked, but advised that the BMW upgraded stereo I opted for when I bought the car was pretty high tech, was using fiber optic cables, and had certain other electrical aspects that was making it hard to get a voltage reading on the sub. There were also some other issues that he wanted to make sure he took into account because of how the car handles its power (BMW's electrical system is separate from ignition, and has separate auto shut off). Everything he said was consistent with what I knew about the car and what expected the difficulties would be based on my own research. He said that he had pulled a bunch of specs for the stereo and the car and had looked a few things up on the internet just to make sure everything was hooked up right and that he'd be done shortly. He called back at around 1:00 and advised that he was done. I went back to pick the car up and everything was expertly hooked up. The sub installation was very clean and professional looking, no loose or straggling wires. I asked him how much it would be, expecting to pay more than the quoted price since the job was legitimately complicated and took twice as long, but he told me it would just be the $140 he quoted me. I honestly wouldn't have been offended if he had asked for more, even up to $200, and would have been happy paying for it. I asked him if he was sure, indicating that I was willing to pay more, but he wouldn't take any more than $140. He did so even though he didn't have another customer that day (at least that I could see), and that my job was basically going to be his income for the day. Overall I would highly recommend this place, unless maybe you have something super high tech. Mr. K worked over half a Saturday for me, did a clean and professional installation, was very friendly, and only charged me $140 for all that work. It's a good place to go to if you want someone that has a pretty good knowledge of what they're doing, is the ultimate hard worker and professional, pays personal attention to the job and isn't farming it out to some workers just to get as many jobs done as possible, and want someone that does the job because they love it and not to try to squeeze dollars out of customers. read more

Kay's shop is certainly not your typical car stereo install & repair shop. First.. in my discussions with Kay, the boss, installer, and do it all, I found that he really is knows what it is that make radios tick. I say that based on my background as a Ham Radio operator and Electrical Engineer. Supposedly he spent time designing radios in his youth decades ago. Second.. one look at his shop and it is obvious he hates the throw away surplus parts that might come in handy some time in the future. His shop is the place to take to have a 21st century stereo installed into a piece of vintage iron as he's got the pieces to fashion custom fits, and something most shops will not tackle at any price. In my case, he clued me into the likely problem from a list of the symptoms, listening to my story of the body work that had been done after an accident, and knowing the idiosyncrasies of my particular model vehicle; he didn't even ask to take it apart. When I got home, I opened things up as he said, and quick work with a soldering iron and shrink tubing had my radio working once again. Admittedly, most people are not handy with a soldering iron, but for me, he easily earned his fee even if I didn't ask him to get his hands dirty. read more

Surprise, surprise; I probably paid too much last time I went to this place. My car's right rear door wasn't opening from inside and one of the auxiliary boxes was broken. He estimated $200 to fix the door and $160 for the part and work on the center console. I thought it was a bit too much and decided to go to a auto repair shop where I fixed my car 3 years ago. There they took only 5 minutes with my door and it was fixed. They laughed when I asked what they did and charged me NOTHING for it. Then, instead of picking a price from the top of their heads like Mr. K from Gran Prix did, they called Toyota, got the part's price and estimated it for a total of $150 (part+labor). I just freaking saved $210. This guy at Gran Prix is a crook. read more

For what it's worth, the guy was right. Unpleasant, really poor communicator, but he was right that the seemingly identical cars could have two different incompatible factory stereos... and these two do. I did, however, figure out which wires go to which wires, swapped the speakers myself, and now it sounds great. But it wasn't as easy as I thought, which was, I think, his concern. I had one remote that stopped working. The company that sold us the original remote said they could order another for $90 but it might not work and there would be no returns. I could just replace the entire alarm system for $300, I remember Kay he fixed my Pathfinder alarm. Took him both remotes. He took the broken one for the Subaru. Called me a day later that he fixed the remote. He was right it worked like a charm. The cost was $40...I'm thrilled. read more

If only all life's problems were so easily solved. Tuner died in our Civic so checked out Yelp and decided to give Grand Prix a shot. Called Mr. K and explained we just needed an install of a Sony already purchased. Took it in the next day at 10 and it was ready before noon. $60, about half of what we would have paid one of the big retailers. Note on the location: look for open doorway on the backside of the auto shop at 11132 Washington Place. I've installed dozens of stereos but i finally got stumped on the wiring of my wife's Audi. I took it to K and he gave me a lecture, sorted through everything and bailed me out. The shop is behind Jack's Automotive and it looks like 'K' has been there a long time. He spent an hour and a half on it, used some new harnesses, a fuse and some connectors and it cost $80 for everything. read more

Really great place -- K was efficient and helpful and affordable, gave me what I needed without overselling me on crap that wasn't necessary and even threw in the 3.5mm to 3.5mm ipod connector cable for free. I had Grand Prix do a decent sized job on my 2004 dodge ram. The work was very clean and professional. I had 2 amps,4 after market speakers and 2 tweeters ,7 inch DVD head unit,rear view cam as well as a radar motion detection system added to my stock alarm system.
