Been going here once a year for three years. In those three years I'd be shocked if the automated coffee machine for espresso drinks was cleaned. The baked goods are pretty good apart from the gobs which just aren't as good as my moms. The owner is usually pretty nice, but isn't really that friendly overall and is generally the only one working. Other coffee shops in Pittsburgh are a LOT nicer, cleaner, friendlier and more professional. read more

As Pittsburgh tourists, naturally we came up the incline and explored a bit. What we didn't realize was that the weather was going to be in the 20s and the wind was about to blow us off the edge! We quickly went to seek some warmth and found a coffee spot right by the incline lookout. The owner, Todd "the god" was super sweet! Very patient and helpful! I ordered the vanilla chai latte and it was absolutely delicious! Not overly spiced like you get at Starbucks sometimes and not excessively sweet like Dunkin'. Just a perfect balance! My boyfriend got the hot chocolate and it was just as delicious! I only wish that I could've tried some of the other drinks. The specials sounded so delicious! Definitely a must try!! read more

Coffee is ok I guess, but Espresso drinks are expensive and not good, and they come in styrofoam cups like you're at a gas station. The owner/operator isn't the friendliest and usually has a few of his buddies there taking up all the seats (it's a small place). Terrible! If I could remove even this one star I would. The owner is rude. The cappuccino was too hot to drink, burned my tongue, bitter, and undrinkable. We threw our drinks out. This hustler only takes cash- charged us $5 for each medium cappuccino which is listed for 4.75. The atm in the shop charged $2.75 to take out $20. So we threw away $12.75 on two terrible undrinkable cappuccinos. You ask why I didn't go back and ask for my money back? I wanted to. But my husband and I knew this is a fighting man and scammer who won't even care about this review. He can't do anything right/ we even asked for proper "to stay" cups- we got shitty "to go" cups. Every who knows coffee- puts cappuccinos beautifully in a cup. Never get their pastries! We got two small hot chocolates ($3.75 each) on their menu, a chocolate chip cookie and a bomboloni (pastry prices not labeled) and it cost $20! I can not support this locale business. I think the shop has been there for way to long and the owner is not willing to do any updates this old news papers and being cash only. When I first got there the owner was two doors down in the ice creamer shop and I had to wait not something someone should do in the service industry. I asked him for a cold brew coffee and he rang me up for it. I tasted the coffee and it was bitter and stale and I asked the man that helped me "is this cold brew" and his respect is "it's yesterday's coffee that I put on ice so it's cold". I asked him if he had any cold brew coffee and he then told me he was the owner and never heard of it. He the. Told me how long he has been in the coffee business and that it sounded like nonsense. To whom ever reads this and does not know what cold brew coffee is it's: made by steeping coarsely ground coffee beans in room-temperature water for six to 12 hours. This creates a coffee concentrate you mix with cold water or milk. To me the acidity is much less and I like that. I just can not recommend this shop to anyone that wants to get tread well and expect some one to not keep you waiting and listen to what you order. In the end I met my friend and we went somewhere els to have coffee. This was bad service, bad experience, and over all a let down by a business owner that has been in the industry so pond that he doesn't know what people want and keeps in his old ways. It's not the only place on Mt. Washington to have coffee so trust me go somewhere els. Oh and if you do go here and the owner is not at the ice cream shop he might have you wait wile he shines the wheels on his Cadillac parked in front of the shop. read more

This place was a great stop after coming up the Monongahela Incline! It's 120 ft away, as a sign by the incline conveniently points out for you. The owner is kind and sat to chat with us after making us coffee. We had a pumpkin spice latte and a white mocha, and both were delicious. He carries fudge as well as pastries, and they taste like they've been made with a lot of love. We'll definitely be back the next time we come up the incline! read more

We planned on heading to DiFiore's for a sweet finish to our afternoon only to find that they were closed. 2 doors down, however, was Grand Brew with an "Open" sign hanging humbly on the door. I don't drink coffee, so I opted for a hot chocolate, and ohhhhh, how it washed away the memories of suburban chains (Five Guys) in a river of ambrosial, whipped cream-topped rapture. There sat a chocolate chip cookie the diameter of a manhole cover, the last of its kind for the day. It begged me to take it to the Promised Land to join its brethren, and I did. Crusty on the outside and chewy within, I tasted the perfect union of sugar and salt, savoring its small cocoa bits, breaking it into pieces to baptize in hot chocolate. Despite having an ideally spongy texture, the chocolate gob I took home fell flat in terms of flavor. Kay will have to tell you what she had in her own review since I cannot remember. After the hot walk from Duquesne Incline upper station to the Mon Incline upper station, Grand Brew was a welcome respite. We were able to cool off in the cute shop with a nice, strong iced coffee and a Shot in the Dark, husband's newest favorite coffee drink. Everyone affiliated with the store was incredibly nice, too; when we walked up the owner was opening up his ice cream shop two doors down, and one of the locals on the patio went and got him for us. A coffee shop masquerading as a coffee shop. As a new Mt. Washington resident, I am on the hunt for a new coffee spot. Being that Shiloh is within a short walking distance we checked it out. To our surprise this was the only place listed as a dedicated coffee shop. Upon entering on that early morning, the barista was in conversation with someone else and we waited until they finished their thought. In the shop there are espresso machines, etc, but we opted for a regular black coffee to establish a baseline before we got into something fancy. We made the mistake of ordering 2 instead of sharing one. We took our coffees to go and paid more than I would have expected. We started walking toward Grandview and after a few sips had announced how displeased we were with the taste. A few more sips and into the garbage can they went. I hate throwing money away, but it was not drinkable and we definitely won't be back. read more

I took my girlfriend and her friend here about a week ago after taking the incline and it was a great place to have a cup of coffee on a cold day. We took the incline trying to fill some time in our night before dinner and after taking pictures at the top of the Monongahela Incline we were all frozen. We kind of wandered around for a bit at the top of the incline and found this place. The gentleman who owns the shop was awesome. We hung out in the coffee shop for a little while and had great conversation with the owner about business and his love for muscle cars. I've only written one review before and it was a 5-Star, raving review of a place. This one will most definitely not be like the last one. I travel a lot of the year all over the United States for my job. This "Coffee Shop" was one of the worst I have ever been to. The man who took my order was INCREDIBLY rude and nearly paid no attention to me at all. They only accept cash under $5, which isn't the biggest deal but I didn't see any postage about this and the man didn't tell me until I went to pay. He then told me to go use the "cheap" ATM ($2.75). Also, this may not matter to you but he had a gun on his hip. That's not the biggest deal to me (I live in Houston) but couple that with his demeaning/combative disposition and it may freak you out. He dropped a few f-bombs while talking to his associate and then, while giving me my change, threw my money down on the table and never once made eye contact. I'm telling y'all, this experience was terrible. If only the espresso redeemed the utter lack of customer service. It didn't. Sorry to be this negative y'all. Locally owned and operated with homemade pastries and delicious coffee. What a great find! The owner was super nice. He was gracious when we took a bit to figure out what we wanted. We had a dog so we couldn't both go in at the same time. We ordered a bear claw, an apricot/blueberry pastry, and two coffees. Everything was delicious! One time they were closed on a Sunday morning and the second two times the doors have been open and I've gone in and there was no one around.
