All you need to do is not look at the Kitchen cleanliness... and the food will be up to the standards for take out. Full of MSG, the wonton noodle wrap is thick, the fried rice id fried and greasy, egg rolls are a decent size and adequate in taste (no meat - all cabbage). I am not sure if its rooted in racism or she just hates her job but I've noticed on game day ( baseball or soccer) the lady who take orders is nice to me. Decided to ride into DC to see what all the talk is about on Mambo sauce. I have be told that the Chinese carryout's are the spot to get some of the best sauce and chicken so I decided to visit Grand China to find out for myself. I arrived to the establishment on March 2 2021 at lunch time (12:45pm) to discover that they have a parking lot which was very nice b/c I didn't have to pay. The outside was clean for the city, but you have to be careful if your alone because this area gets some foot traffic. Once I walked inside I noticed that only 4 customers are allowed inside right now during COVID-19 so if your walking be sure to be able to stay warm waiting for your food outside if your not driving or just call ahead. It took less than 15 minutes for me to get my food and it was very tasty!! The Mambo sauce on the chicken taste very similar to a sweet and sour sauce, but just like others mentioned it is kind of bland and its more sweetness than sour. I personally prefer Capitol City sweet hot Mambo sauce because it has more flavor and heat. The fried rice was amazing and cooked to perfection with a good amount of vegetables and seasoning. Overall, if you the type of person that wants to get that flavor of DC Mambo this is not a bad choice but I still recommend you try Capitol city bottled sauce as well! Be sure to let them know you want Mambo sauce when you order because it does not automatically come with wings and if your going to have to travel some distance I also recommend you get the sauce on the side to prevent your wings from becoming soggy. read more

I just left this place I ordered the mambo chicken it was extremely bland...ALSO I ordered the chicken chow mein and they gave me some gooey chicken instead, they probably gave me someones order that wasn't picked up so they wanted me to pay for it!!!!! Despite looking really shady and not having great reviews on Yelp the food was surprisingly really good. When you walk up at night you will probably second guess your decision especially when you walk up to the bullet proof window to order your food but if you can get past that you'll be in for a treat! I ordered thier famous chicken wings and beef and broccoli. I almost forgot about the mumbo sauce until I heard a customer after me ask for it. I'm glad I did as from what I read/saw on YouTube it's a local flavor. Mumbo sauce is kind of like a mix of sweet and sour sauce and Tabasco (most sweet than spicy). Ok so if you can see beyond the exterior and interior of the place you will know that they have really good food. I had the taste for some chicken wings, fried rice and mambo sauce, so we stopped by Grand China after reading reviews and noticing it was only about 5 minutes away. I can honestly say I was not disappointed at all. The food was fresh, hot and the prices were very reasonable. If we ever travel back to DC this will definitely be our go to spot. Just an FYI if you are familiar with mambo sauce then their sauce is about a 5/6, but thankfully Safeway was near so I ran in and grabbed a few bottles of Capital City!!!! read more

I am a huge fan of Wings and M(a/u)mbo sauce but I enjoy the finished product a lot more than the process. The older I get, the more that carryouts give me the Heebie Geebies. Grand China did just that for me. I found out about Grand China from the Food Grails episode that I am including below. I love the series and since I had already visited many of the other places in the video, I had to try the one where they bought wings and enjoyed said wings with smiles on their faces. Walking in, I thought this can't be the place from the video, this place is more dingy than I pictured. It is the same place and may not have been cleaned since god knows when. I didn't want to sit and wait for my food, not that there are seats. I couldn't have waited in the car but they did have a space heater going, another plus. The wings were calidad and I enjoyed their M(a/u)mbo Sauce. It was sweet and tangy. Not the best I've had but above average. She walked off during the middle of taking my family order to go grab some supplies for the cook and said nothing...came back and impatiently took the rest of my order. This hole-in-a-wall was really a let down. The menu is a bizarre mix of Americanized Chinese (with faded photos from the 80s), hoagies, and chicken wings. Apparently they sell a lot of the latter, because I was the only person there ordering Chinese. They also sell Black and Milds in case you have a craving. This is a carryout-only establishment with nowhere to eat-in. The food was a real let down. The only reason why they get two stars instead of one is because the broccoli was fresh and crispy, and nothing was greasy. The reason why they barely deserve two stars is because there was no flavor in any of the dishes, and the meat was poor quality. They serve the worst fried rice I've ever had, and the beef in the lo mein was so fatty that it was inedible. The general tso's chicken was barely marginal. While the portions were large, the flavor and quality was totally absent. Also, be prepared to encounter a few homeless addicts while you're waiting for your order. While outside, one guy walked up and got within an inch of my face, and anticipating an attack and/or mugging, I gladly complied with his request for a sandwich. Interestingly, the woman with his crew later came up to me and apologized that her friend got in my face, even saying "that is no way to treat a person." I was in town for the night and stayed at a nearby hotel a few blocks away from Grand China Carryout. I called ahead to order and ask if they had delivery, which they didn't, no big deal for me! I walked a couple blocks and picked up my carryout of General Tso chicken, a side of fried rice, and an egg roll. The lady at the counter and phone was super friendly and nice, great customer service. The food was even better though!! I was kinda wary at first of past reviews but don't let them discourage you. The general tso dish was packed full of chicken and tasted delicious! The fried rice and egg roll were super enjoyable as well. The lobby is small with a few benches to sit on so do NOT in any way think that you are going to eat there b/c u are not. This location is in downtown d/c next to the Capital one Arena where the Washington Wizard's play. Lot's of traffic and all types of people come in. The food. The chicken fried rice I had was exceptional. So were the fries. The wings were fresh out of the fryer, large ...actually the whole plate of food was enough to feed two people. The wings were.... fine. Not at all seasoned. They depend mostly on the Mumbo sauce for flavor. WARNING: I did not ask for it on the side and I regret it. B/c all these carryouts Mumbo have slightly different variations of Mumbo sauce. This one, was a little bland for me and not sweet enough though others liked it very much. This has always been my second choice carry-out, but now since China Wall has closed this is my go to for 2 things Cheeseburger sub w/mambo on the side salt n pepper on the fries or some chicken wings with mambo sauce and fries with salt n pepper on the side.........I really haven't tasted anything else........my mom likes the mixed veggies no msg (the veggies are always super fresh) I also like that the chicken and the fries aren't super greasy either. I have also tried the cheesesteak sub and the cheesesteak eggroll...tasty but the cheeseburger sub with the mambo sauce to dip it in wins every time!
