Cheap Chinese takeout was one of my favorite things to eat when I was in college. I tried Grand China Carryout because it's been years since I had Chinese takeout. The store was honestly kinda beat down and didn't look super clean. That being said, the woman taking the orders was very friendly and the food was actually pretty solid. I got General Tsos chicken and it tasted pretty great. It cost about $16, which is double what I used to pay back in the day. Regardless, I scratched the itch that I had for Chinese takeout.

First time trying Mumbo sauce, it was ok, service was fast, wings were fresh and cooked nicely, could've had more seasoning but I enjoyed it, the sauce could have been better but all in all, good eating! Nice retro Chinese restaurant vibe inside!

Decided to ride into DC to see what all the talk is about on Mambo sauce. I have be told that the Chinese carryout's are the spot to get some of the best sauce and chicken so I decided to visit Grand China to find out for myself. I arrived to the establishment on March 2 2021 at lunch time (12:45pm) to discover that they have a parking lot which was very nice b/c I didn't have to pay. The outside was clean for the city, but you have to be careful if your alone because this area gets some foot traffic. Once I walked inside I noticed that only 4 customers are allowed inside right now during COVID-19 so if your walking be sure to be able to stay warm waiting for your food outside if your not driving or just call ahead. It took less than 15 minutes for me to get my food and it was very tasty!! The Mambo sauce on the chicken taste very similar to a sweet and sour sauce, but just like others mentioned it is kind of bland and its more sweetness than sour. I personally prefer Capitol City sweet hot Mambo sauce because it has more flavor and heat. The fried rice was amazing and cooked to perfection with a good amount of vegetables and seasoning. Overall, if you the type of person that wants to get that flavor of DC Mambo this is not a bad choice but I still recommend you try Capitol city bottled sauce as well! Be sure to let them know you want Mambo sauce when you order because it does not automatically come with wings and if your going to have to travel some distance I also recommend you get the sauce on the side to prevent your wings from becoming soggy.

I just left this place I ordered the mambo chicken it was extremely bland...ALSO I ordered the chicken chow mein and they gave me some gooey chicken instead, they probably gave me someones order that wasn't picked up so they wanted me to pay for it!!!!! But because I was already home I decided to eat it because I didn't want it to go to waste ALSO!!!!! the veggie chicken had a bug in it!!!!! This place doesn't look the cleanest but I decided to give it a try. I am BEYOND disgusted and disappointed!! This is the first and last time You will see me here!!!!

Chicken wings with mumbo sauce on the side - beef and broccoli and generic ginger ale. Overall everything was really good!

Despite looking really shady and not having great reviews on Yelp the food was surprisingly really good. When you walk up at night you will probably second guess your decision especially when you walk up to the bullet proof window to order your food but if you can get past that you'll be in for a treat! I ordered thier famous chicken wings and beef and broccoli. I almost forgot about the mumbo sauce until I heard a customer after me ask for it. I'm glad I did as from what I read/saw on YouTube it's a local flavor. Mumbo sauce is kind of like a mix of sweet and sour sauce and Tabasco (most sweet than spicy). Also I was surprised to see that this exact hole in the wall take out restaurant was actually featured on YouTube. The chicken wings were cooked perfectly (crispy and enough flavor without being too salty). It was probably up there in terms of the best wings I have eaten before. Beef and broccoli was anything special but overall it was pretty good. If I come back to DC I'll make sure to stop by again!

I am a huge fan of Wings and M(a/u)mbo sauce but I enjoy the finished product a lot more than the process. The older I get, the more that carryouts give me the Heebie Geebies. Grand China did just that for me. I found out about Grand China from the Food Grails episode that I am including below. I love the series and since I had already visited many of the other places in the video, I had to try the one where they bought wings and enjoyed said wings with smiles on their faces. Walking in, I thought this can't be the place from the video, this place is more dingy than I pictured. It is the same place and may not have been cleaned since god knows when. I didn't want to sit and wait for my food, not that there are seats. I couldn't have waited in the car but they did have a space heater going, another plus. The wings were calidad and I enjoyed their M(a/u)mbo Sauce. It was sweet and tangy. Not the best I've had but above average. I don't think it was as great as it seemed in Food Grails but how many people really tried this spot on the account of a webseries hosted by Miss Info. I am not even going to lie by saying I am done with carryouts, because I will hit one up here and there but for my fix, I think I will stick buying my own sauce or making my way to Henry's in Oxon Hill. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_44jTTbD8Yo

Fitting, since it's right next to the Air and Space museum, I decided to hit the National Museum of the American Indian and partake. Skip all of the food trucks lined up along the road, and go inside and sit down and enjoy. It's one of the few times I dined anywhere and knew exactly what I was going to get. It was set up like a mini food court with different stations which had different dishes. I ponied up to the one with the taco and the woman put together an amazing looking "taco". It's like no other taco I've ever had. This thing weighed a lot, and that made the $18+ price tag worth it. It was delicious and definitely knife and fork material. It was a hodge-podge of meat, beans, pickled veggies, and sauces and it was delicious. There was plenty of seating when I was there and some cool views of a water feature outside. And since you're here, go visit the museum too. It's pretty cool!

There was a peaceful ambiance - the view of the outdoor space was lovely. Nice complement to a beautiful museum.

It should be noted that the A/C is quite powerful in there, especially if you are under a vent. Good thing you're about to have soup! Here, we want to shoutout our server Elmer (we think that's his name!) who was a hero in terms of relocating us from stools to a booth and lowering the music, which was really, really loud. We've gotten so used to not having good customer service that it really shines when you actually get it. Promote Elmer! The ramen here is capital-E Excellent. All of us ordered different ones, and all of them were beyond delicious. The broths are so flavorful, and we appreciated the ground pork (we didn't love the chashu because the meat was a bit tough). The noodles had a great bite to them. Our daughter got the shio, which was perfect for her because it was the most simple one. One of us got the shoyu, which has more depth, and ordered it with the extra veggies on top. The other one got the spicy shoyu, and that one had the right amount of kick--like, legitimately spicy, but you're not writhing in pain. We wish there were some fresh starters on the menu (like a cucumber salad, etc), but there's only fried stuff. Finally, we need to mention that the soft serve sesame ice cream was NEXT LEVEL. Like, do not NOT order it. So creamy, so smooth, perfect balance of sweet and salty--it essentially tasted like frozen halva. We would go back just for the ice cream alone!! Never change that flavor! So, to recap: nice ambience with incredible food and service. Four very happy stars and we'd highly recommend it to others. It got us all excited for our trip to Japan later this month.

Plus, the ambience is a mix of relaxation and class. I ordered the Lychee Martini to start, followed by the Tom Yum Fried Rice with Shrimp. It was cold, fresh, and so flavorful. The freshness and spicy/sour flavors really delight the pallet. Plus, the pepper tray provides vinegar and hot sauces to supplement, if needed. The owner not only cares about the quality of the food in this restaurant, but about his customers and the community. I haven't visited for a while, and the staff still remembered my standard order. Before we even walked into the restaurant, we were informed that the left entrance door had been broken for quite some time. Overall Ratings Atmosphere - 3/5 Service - 3/5 Food - 3/5 Parking - Street Parking Atmosphere - The restaurant feels a bit old and dated and could probably use some updating. Interestingly, while the dining room definitely shows its age, the ordering system is modern and up to date. The contrast between the two was pretty noticeable. Service - Service was just okay. This is more of a casual setup where customers place their orders at the counter and the staff bring the food out when it's ready. There wasn't really anything memorable, either good or bad, about the service experience. What We Ordered - -Spring Rolls (Good) -Pho Dac Biet (Special Beef Pho) - The flavor was good overall, but the broth was only lukewarm when it arrived. A bowl of pho really needs to be piping hot, so this took away from the experience. -Grilled Pork Rice Plate - The pork was a bit too salty for my taste and was just okay overall. Final Thoughts - This was an average dining experience. The food was decent, the service was adequate, and the atmosphere was nothing particularly special. Nothing stood out enough to make me want to go out of my way to return, but I also wouldn't discourage others from trying it if they're already in the area. There are simply other Vietnamese restaurants nearby that I would be more inclined to visit first.
