But a little too crispy for me and very little scallion. The pork chop had a weird oily taste. Ask for their vinegar which will make it taste okay. Food was pretty good, hall can be hot. We were here at 7 pm on a Wednesday in July and the food hall was quite warm. Soup dumplings aren't really a meal you take to go though so we decided to stick it out. We got lucky and snagged a table. There aren't a ton, but there were more throughout the evening. What's odd is there was a police person at the door at 7 pm but not at 8 pm when we left. The bathrooms do require a code to get in which is at the bottom of your receipt. Bring water, because dumpling district does not provide free cups of water. You can order at the touch pad or the cashier. It is made fresh so it takes a little while. We got beef stir fry, chicken soup dumplings and a side of white rice (for my son). My husband said it's the best dumplings he's ever tasted. I thought they were solid. I don't get soup dumplings a lot so I'm not well versed, but I liked them. The stir fry was also quite good, not a ton of beef, but what I'd expect for $2 extra. I was craving Chinese and thought I would come here as it's very close to me and the menu seemed intriguing, but I was really disappointed. I came in the early afternoon and basically half the menu was unavailable. This was not written anywhere though, so it was just an awkward game of ordering and being told one by one what was sold out, which made for a long and drawn out ordering process. I then ordered the cucumber salad and the cashier told me they don't have that here, until I pointed it out on the menu on the wall behind him. When they turned the iPad around for me to pay, I was grossed out because it had greasy fingerprints all over it and needed to be cleaned. I should have left, but I'm a fool so I paid and waited for my food, which did not impress me. You can tell the dumplings are from a factory and are frozen because of the pleats. The sheng jian bao wrapper, which is normally supposed to be fluffy and bread like, was thin and chewy. The flavor wasn't anything to write home about either. The cucumber salad was coated in oil and thus none of the dressing adhered to the cucumber, making it just bland and greasy. Definitely won't be coming again. Home to the best soup dumplings DC has ever seen! I was a little dubious when I saw Dumpling District nestled in the back corner of Luna Hall when I first visited the food hall, but...wow. I'm so happy I decided to give it a shot. The soup dumplings are phenomenal -- they have a genuinely impressive amount of soup inside, and their soup is also absolutely packed with flavor. The skin is quite thin and has a slight chew, which makes them a wonderful eating experience, but also a mildly embarrassing test of my chopsticks skills. Dumpling District is also one of the only places I've seen do a purely pescatarian soup dumpling; their shrimp and zucchini filling has genuinely changed my life and helped me recover from years of sadly watching as my friends devoured their pork soup dumplings without me. While their soup dumplings are absolutely elite, their other menu offerings are a tad less exciting. I also tried their stir-fried rice cakes, which, while tasty, didn't have a ton of seasoning and honestly felt like something I could throw together in 15 minutes back home (not that there's anything wrong with homestyle cooking...it just wasn't really worth $15). Little interaction with any staff so can't comment on the service. Plenty of seating unless it gets busy, which it did pick up after we were done. All of the dishes we had were pretty good for a food hall stand. The rainbow dumpling gave us options to try all of the flavors - my least favorite was the mala, then chicken, but the rest were good. I have seen these dumplings pop up in my feed many times and knew I had to try them. My buddy and I rode our bikes into Chinatown and stopped by for a little snack. The dough was a bit thicker than I would like but the filling and taste was great! It came with a pork, crab and pork, chicken, shrimp and zucchini, mala and black truffle flavors. I was looking forward to trying Dumpling District but I have to say, it was super disappointing. I'll caveat this though with the fact that I didn't get any actual dumplings, so maybe that's why the food was so bad. If I were ever to go back it'd only be to try their dumplings or dim sum and see if they had any redeeming qualities (I assume so, given how many others have said good things about them). In our case, my friends and I ended up getting the scallion pancake, noodles with scallion sauce, and two orders of stir-fry noodles. The scallion pancake was texturally not bad, but it was totally devoid of taste. A friend and I were going to share it, but it was so underwhelming that we ended up just not eating much of it (and neither of us are the type to throw away food). The stir-fry noodles were similarly bland -- only with heaps of chili oil and/or soy sauce did they feel somewhat palatable. And the scallion noodles were slightly more flavorful, but were so incredibly overcooked that they were hard to eat as well. We all ended up having a lot of leftovers -- but for all the wrong reasons. Btw, we stopped by the one at Pentagon City Mall and heads up that finding it was a bit of a chore. It turned out that it was right next to the Kung Fu Tea (they share a space) but that wasn't immediately obvious and we were initially confused trying to locate it. read more

I had one order of rainbow dumpling take out, so I'm rating this only as a take-out place. It's a counter in a food hall, not really someplace I'd want to sit and eat. One order was 6 dumplings for $16.95, and that was more than enough to make a meal for one person. I was really excited to make a return visit after checking them out at an event - I remember their XLBs having thin skin, being super juicy, and pretty comparable, if not better, than other XLBs in the area... Their menu offers various dim sum items (buns, shumais, potstickers, steamed dumplings, wontons), various apps (such as cucumber salad with garlic, braised duck, etc.), stir-fry noodles, fried rice, etc. We came here for an early meal, and we ordered: +Pork XLBs - the hubs did NOT enjoy these at all; he stated that the broth was awful, and the pork was of low quality and did not taste good +Shrimp & Zucchini XLBs - these were just okay; I felt as if the filling was super bland and it was more zucchini bits than shrimp We did mention to the cashier that we were going to dine-in, so we expected these to come out in the bamboo steamers; however, all orders are automatically packed in to-go containers, which, I feel, do not travel well. I was a bit disappointed, however, by the broth, which had a good flavor but wasn't very rich. The pork, shrimp & chive dumplings, however, were very disappointing. They were doughy and thick, and the filling was not fully heated. The flavors just didn't meld. And rather than serve the dumplings with the appropriate sauces for dipping, a single overly sweet vinegar-based sauce was provided. I have relatively low expectations for XLBs (soup dumplings) in the DMV, but one of my friends insisted that I gave Dumpling District a try. PORK SOUP DUMPLINGS (6) - 13.95 Most people get the rainbow soup dumpling sampler but I prefer sticking to the traditional option. This is pretty pricy for six soup dumplings, but they're on the bigger side. I wish they gave me a soup spoon to eat these with because upon biting the skin of the dumpling, I am forced to slurp all the soup, otherwise it will spill and drip everywhere. The soup was on the lighter side, savory with a hint of sweetness. The pork was also well marinated and tasted pretty good. The skin was thinner/more elastic than I expected. Overall, these were much better than I expected. Sadly, one spilled open because it was stuck onto the parchment paper. Other than that, these are one of the better XLBs I've had in the area. My friend got a rice cake for the table and I thought that was just OK. There wasn't a lot of sauce and the rice cakes stuck together and were on the drier side. The vegetables were fine. The pork shumai were perfectly cooked and piping hot when I dug into them and they were delicious! There was plenty of filling inside and combined with their chili oil, it was a great combo! For the soup dumplings, they have 6 different fillings inside and I chose the rainbow option to try them all! Here is my ranking for the 6 fillings: 1. Mala 2. Pork 3. Crab Meat & Pork 4. Since I live in Maine, I don't have too many options for Chinese soup dumplings, so when I travel I seek them out, and I've had some really delicious ones all over the country. In DC, a new spot recently opened, and the "rainbow" concept intrigued me. The dumplings were delicious! I know eating them immediately is best, but I had limited time and had to get them to go. I wondered how well they would travel. I was very impressed. I ate them about 15 mins. after my order was made. None of the dumplings had any tears in the wrappers even though the wrappers were quite thin which I love. I also worried they would stick together, make a hole when I separated them, and lose the broth...but this did NOT happen, not even once. There were several kinds of broth, chicken, seafood, and pork. The filling was different in each one, and they were all delicious. I also tried the Shanghai Shumai...which were filled with a mushroom and pork filling and very mushroomy, but the mushrooms were ground to small instead of of in small chunks, and they were slightly dry filling. The atmosphere & decor is basically a food court with tables and chairs, with lots of flashing lights, some lots of comfy couches. I did not figure out how to order online or by phone so I walked there and ordered at the counter. The service was great. The dumplings took about 10 - 12 mins, and the counter person brought me my order to the table I was waiting at. read more
