Back again a year later and Daikaya is still one of the best bowls of ramen! I went with the spicy miso this time and it was excellent. Not super hot, just enough to have some flavor and warm you up.

Daikaya, which means "big cooking pot" is a modern ramen spot in DC that serves as a solid lunch option. A few things to note for a smoother visit: -Due to frequent foot traffic and limited seating, Daikaya enforces a strict policy that does not allow holding tables for incomplete parties (even for 2 people). -Parties of 2 are typically sat next to each other not across from one another (even upon request). -Pork is the primary protein choice (no chicken option available). -Stools are fairly short. Now! I do want to mention that aside from the things to keep a heads up on, I did really enjoy how fresh the ramen noodles tasted! The noodles were certainly the star of the show. The food comes out fairly quick. I'd say they create an environment where you can grab a quick yet filling bite to eat and then head on your way to explore more of the city. If I do go back, it would be for a quick bite at the bar or an order of takeout. Overall, with managed expectations, it can be a pretty tasty option.

What could be better than a warm bowl of ramen on a frigid winter night. Located right across the street from the stadium, Daikaya is a poppin spot that looks like it's alway busy (for good reason). There's usually a little bit of a wait for seating but it's worth it. Sat at the counter right next to all chef action. Bowl after bowl of delectable ramen being made. Ended up opting for the spicy miso bowl. Rich flavor with a kick on the back end. Really hit the spot. I usually don't eat the egg but this egg was perfect with the ramen. It was fun sitting down, engaging with the wait staff and the other patrons.

i liked the spicy miso ramen!! we tried spicy miso, shoyu ramen and curry ramen. the AC is blasting here and you won't be able to get seated until full party is there.

Fast service and straight to the point. You can see the workers scooping broth and putting together the bowls and they have counter seats plus tables! Spicy miso - has a good kick! Noodles pick up broth well but overall heavy which is Sapporo style just not my style 2.75/5 Shoyu - surprisingly it's heavy too 2.5/5

Bring the kid to eat at 3:30, and there are still a lot of people. It tastes good. The staff is probably busy. It is recommended to add spicy meat. The store is relatively small, and it is estimated that you have to queue up for dinner. The child also thinks it's delicious.

My coworkers and I came to Daikaya after our holiday party and were quickly seated in the far back where they have the large table. The menu is limited to several ramens, extra toppings and a few side options. Most of us ordered the Shoyu, which I did as well. The waiter came through and checked on us, taking our order and bringing out the ramen quickly. It was really good, I'm not a HUGE fan of shoyu ramen (personally, my fave is tonkotsu broth) but this was really good. The gyoza was also really good and tasted freshly made. The waiter also brought us a pitcher of water to serve ourselves. The decor is super cute with nods to JPOP bands, historical sites and pop culture in Japan across the wall. Overall it was a good experience, reasonably priced and good service! It's definitely somewhere I'd try again.

If you are visiting the Izakaya on the second floor- make reservations through their website- they have small plates. We weren't 100% sure of our plans so we opted for the 1st floor which is Ramen and had to wait quite a while (first come first served on a Friday) and it was quite cramped. The first floor was quite small with limited seating. The service was good though! I haven't been the biggest fan of Japanese ramen but have been coming around lately. The spicy miso was pretty good and my friends all got the Shoyu and ate all of it. All in all- seemed very popular. I spent about $27 for ramen including tax and tip.

One of my favorite ramen spots in the city! I usually get the veggie ramen when I come here because I rarely eat pork, but this time I decided to try the spicy miso ramen. It definitely did not disappoint! I decided to add veggies and corn to mine. I definitely will be returning when I'm back in town! The stag is friendly and the food come out pretty quickly as well. All in all it was a great experience. Hope this helps!

I came here with a friend for a later dinner on a Thursday. It's a super small shop, a few booths and two communal tables as well as a few bar seats. I think there's a larger izakaya restaurant upstairs but we didn't investigate. We waited for only a couple minutes before getting seated but I can definitely see it having a long wait on the weekends. I ordered the shio and it was excellent. I'm not the biggest ramen person but the noodles tasted fresh and chewy! I really liked the ground pork and chashu toppings. I had no leftovers and thought the portion size was perfect! My friend tried their tomato curry special and enjoyed it as well (although she said she couldn't really taste the tomato). Service was really fast and our food came out quickly. Definitely intrigued by the izakaya menu so will have to return!

I came here with 2 other friends after the Caps game and it was such a great option. Either make a reservation in advance or come super early if there is a game. The food comes out super fast, drinks a little slower. Good vibes inside and cute decor - reminds me of Japan. The ramen is pretty good and the spicy miso is SUPER spicy.

RAMEN SNOB ALERT! Having spent 5 years in Japan we are always on the hunt for authentic Japanese ramen. This spot ranks right up there! Wait was a little longer than usual due to there being a concert across the street, but it was still only 20-30 minutes. The hostesses are AWESOME! Even with a line out the door! The place itself is small, very Japan-esque. Smells coming from the open air kitchen flow out the front door and they are mouth watering scents! We sat in the back for our party of 5, which is a very secluded back of the restaurant spot. Very cool Japanese wall photos. Our server Carl was on point with the orders. You don't think he's listening because the pens not moving but he got every order on point! The ramen itself is absolutely delicious! Gyoza as well, very crispy. The ramen noodles are flown in from Japan, and they are the BEST! My buddy and I got the Super Spicy and I'm telling you, I love spice but this is next level. Ghost peppers, Carolina reapers and 18 other peppers.... WE ASKED! I will say, I finished my whole bowl. After the initial shock and awe, it was ok. Couple others in the group got the Shoyu and they loved it! All in all, this place is legit authentic ramen. Will definitely be back!

This ramen had me reminiscing over my time spent in Japan. The whole experience felt familiar, from the long table seating to the busy chefs to the body and bite of the noodles. It's nice to have such a great ramen place in DC! I went for an early dinner on a weekday, so there was no wait. It's small inside with only a few tables, and most of the seating is communal. You can see the chefs at work behind the bar. Service was quick and very nice. My ramen came to me pretty quickly and was piping hot! I paid extra for an onsen egg which was so worth it! I also had the dumplings which were crispy and good. Definitely one of the best ramen places in the city!

Ask the Community - Daikaya Ramen Shop

Is the outdoor seating dog friendly?

    Yes

Can you take your food to go instead of dining in?

    Yes

    Any gluten free ramen?

No. Not that I know of.

Whats the best ramen on the menu, trying this place out tomorrow for date night?

Spicy Miso hands down. It's not very spicy at all. Ask for mild if you don't like too much heat! My husband gets the Shoyu but liked mine better. Whatever you get it will be delish! The potstickers are very tasty as well.

    Is it good?

Yes! I wouldn't wait an hour though. The wait can get pretty long.

Is parking near the restaurant difficult?

Parking is difficult. Street parking is the best option since the public parking in the back will.most likely be filled.

It wasn't hard to get a reservation, but the place was full the whole time I was there. We sat on the second floor. Dinner included the Tuna Nuta ($15), Shimesaba (mackerel, $19.5, 8 pieces), Beef Tongue ($19.5, 4 pieces), three small vegetables (we picked Kimchi Cucumbers, Hijiki Seaweed, and Nasu Eggplant, $19) and a fried Sea Bream Collar (suggested by the server, $30 maybe?). Also draft Sapporo ($8). I liked the Tuna Nuta the best. I had never had this before, and I liked the flavor of the dressing. The Shimesaba was fine; it tasted like mackerel, as you would expect. The Beef Tongue was a huge disappointment -- the slices were uneven and haphazard, the various marbling/fat/textures looked unappealing, and it was served lukewarm. There was no effort or care put into this dish. The Sea Bream Collar was fine; the fry was nice, it was boney (as expected), but I did not like it as much as the salmon collar at St. Anselm. Vegetables were pretty good; the cucumbers didn't taste much like kimchi (a positive, in my book), I liked the flavors and textures of the seaweed (a new preparation for me), and I liked the eggplant flavor even if the texture was a bit limp. Service was pretty weak. The server offered halfhearted suggestions. They did not do basic things like clear the chopstick wrapper or keep the water carafe filled. We struggled to order a second beer. Ambiance was simple, but I liked it well enough. Overall, do not recommend.
