Delicious food (tender squid for example), ok speed (when in a hurry for theatre!), but service with a grumpy face in a super noisy environment. They have a huge patio (noise level outside is better; able to chat). Soft shell crab is great (sauce comes on the side so the crispy crab doesn't become soggy). Ginger lover seafood is also wonderful. The whole place was full at its seams on a Thursday night. Lots of guests in suits, probably the people working in nearby government offices. Tables and chairs aren't the best (may need attention) but the whole ambiance is casual so I guess in the end, thanks to relatively fast service, all is well that ends well. read more

This spot is truly the place to be! The staff are so friendly, the food is truly delicious and they have happy hour till 9:30 (rare in DC!!). We first ordered from here via Grub Hub and the food was so tasty that we had to come in person. We came by on both a Wednesday and a Friday, both times we had a great experience! INCREDIBLE happy hour!! came here on a friday evening with a large group of friends and no reservation, and they were able to seat us immediately and even push together some tables so we could all fit. talay's happy hour is long and cheap - $6 cocktails and $5 apps. i got a siam dragon (thai iced tea with vodka), and the drink was super strong, so i didn't need more than one. the spring rolls were great, too. i was hungry halfway through my drink so i ordered the pad see ew with tofu, which was delicious, with a portion size large enough for leftovers the next day. i'm not a hill staffer, but i can see why they come here all the time after work! it was definitely worth the trek to capitol hill for me. highly recommend! read more

Came here after visiting the Library of Congress. The restaurant is located super close to Capitol South metro station. We arrived at almost 12 noon and we were greeted and seated really promptly. The restaurant was somewhat busy, and it got busier not long after we were seated. We ordered steamed dumplings, panang curry with chicken (came with rice) and stir fry mixed vegetables with tofu (came with rice). The food was served quite quickly. Aside from the steamed dumplings which are pretty much shumai and a tad on the dry side, we enjoyed our lunch! This is our first time trying panang curry (I think? I usually get green curry). While it's owned and run by Thai staff, I don't know if I'd say it's authentic Thai flavor but the curry and stir fry were tasty and flavorful. Reasonable prices, good portions. Capitol Hill peeps: y'all are sleeping on an excellent happy hour option. Better beer prices than Bullfeathers and T Coast. Cocktails that are cheaper than most beers from the neighbors, with a decent list of options including mojitos and mai tais. And cheap, delicious small plates to hold you over til dinner. The vibe isn't that of a bar, but if you want to have some happy hour drinks and snacks with friends/colleagues at a table where you can hear each other talk, you should know that Talay Thai's happy hour exists. I've also been there for lunch a number of times. I usually order the panang curry (my go to order at any Thai restaurant, and the benchmark by which I compare them). Theirs is good. Spicy, peanut-y, coconut milky, pretty rich... everything you want from the dish. I'm sure that there's a Thai restaurant that does it better somewhere in DC. I can think of a place in Arlington and one in Alexandria that I know I'd prefer. But, they're better than most and compared to the rest of the mostly weak Capitol Hill food scene, they're a treasure. The service I've gotten has ranged from pretty good to very good. The prices are pretty reasonable even if you're not giving them bonus points for location. I don't know that you need to go far out of your way to go to Talay Thai. It's good, but many Thai restaurants are. But if you're looking for a meal on the Hill, it's a great option: a solidly above average Thai restaurant in a super convenient location. read more

I went with the Kaprow Basil with Chicken the Crispy Spring Rolls. The Kaprow was great and very flavorful. I asked for it to made Thai spicy and they totally delivered. The spring rolls were just okay. They weren't as flavorful as I've had at other places. They have a robust menu with great lunch specials and happy hour deals. The service here is SOOOO slow. Like do not expect to get serviced in decent timing. It was unbelievably slow, y'all. That being said, the food was GOOOD. It was my first real Thai spot and I ordered the Spring Rolls, the Penang Curry, the Shrimp Rolls, and a Mai Thai. The Spring Rolls were so tasty, I didn't even offer them to the table. They were awesome! The Penang Curry with tofu was awesome - lots and lots of tofu. It was so filling, I shared the rest and it was GONE. It was very flavorful. I recommend. The Shrimp Rolls never came out, she didn't charge them. The Mai Thai came after the food, so I gave it to a birthday in the group. He said it was tasty and sweet. Would visit again for sure. Talay Thai has been one of my somewhat regular Thai places throughout the years. Unfortunately, it's more for convenience than for anything else, because there are major flaws here and it's not a consistent. I still order here but I'm very particular about what I get. When the food is good, it's solid. Not the best I've ever had, but it hits the spot. Some dishes tend to be more consistent, although even those are sometimes hit or miss. The ka prow is one of the better ones. But even then, I've had it bland, or I've had it so overly spicy that it blows my mouth out. The pad thai is okay but again, similarly inconsistent. The larb and dumplings tend to be more consistent, but even then it's hard to know. I've had larb that's good, and other times when it's bland and mostly flavorless. The dumplings are generally good but I've had some that are also just dense and tough. Some food is just consistently bad. The curries I've gotten have all been relatively bland and muted. The noodle dishes have tended to disappoint me more often than not, pad thai excepted. The one relatively consistent good is that usually delivery is prompt... Except, on the rare times, when it's not, and your food takes a long time and arrives cold. Talay Thai is a sometimes passable experience, but overall, it's not the top choice if you have other options. read more

Great takeout. Quickest Asian delivery service in DC, especially if you call them and order directly from the restaurant instead of using a third party delivery app like Uber Eats or DoorDash. The happy hour starts in the late afternoon and goes until close. $2.50 beers and $4 select (strong) cocktails including Long Island iced teas. Can't go wrong with some affordable apps on the happy hour menu, but the pad thai is worth paying full price. It's only a block from the House office buildings, and it has a great patio to hang out on for affordable drinks with friends when it's nice out. read more

Some ingredient must have been bad because it smelled very "sulfuric," almost rotten. I have patronized this restaurant as part of an academic group for more than 10 years. I've also eaten here on many other occasions. Until the last few years many times the party I was with were the only customers. We spent hundreds of dollars with generous tips. Today our group tried to have dinner here. I checked their website to see if they take reservations. The site said no. We arrived at the restaurant to find that all the tables were occupied or reserved. When I noted the website said no reservations the host said Oh yeah you can call. No concern for misleading information. No concern for long- term loyal customers. Etc. This place USED to be so good back in the day, but now, the food has no taste what so ever. I had the fried rice with pineapples and my son had the fried rice with basil. I had about 5 pineapple chunks and there was barely any basil in my son's dish. NEITHER HAD EGG OR JUST BARELY, which gives the rice flavor. It was as if they just boiled the rice and threw some veggies on top. I spent $52 bucks, just to chuck it all out. DONT WASTE YOUR TIME GOING HERE UNLESS YOU HAVE MONEY TO LOOSE AND NOT REALLY INTERESTED IN A DECENT MEAL. I visited the Library of Congress and as I was walking back to the metro I saw this place & decide to pop in for dinner. I had the Curry Panang & it was pretty good! I enjoyed the quiet & quaintness of this restaurant! I definitely recommend.
