INCREDIBLE happy hour!! came here on a friday evening with a large group of friends and no reservation, and they were able to seat us immediately and even push together some tables so we could all fit. talay's happy hour is long and cheap - $6 cocktails and $5 apps. i got a siam dragon (thai iced tea with vodka), and the drink was super strong, so i didn't need more than one. the spring rolls were great, too. i was hungry halfway through my drink so i ordered the pad see ew with tofu, which was delicious, with a portion size large enough for leftovers the next day. i'm not a hill staffer, but i can see why they come here all the time after work! it was definitely worth the trek to capitol hill for me. highly recommend!

Came here after visiting the Library of Congress. The restaurant is located super close to Capitol South metro station. We arrived at almost 12 noon and we were greeted and seated really promptly. The restaurant was somewhat busy, and it got busier not long after we were seated. We ordered steamed dumplings, panang curry with chicken (came with rice) and stir fry mixed vegetables with tofu (came with rice). The food was served quite quickly. Aside from the steamed dumplings which are pretty much shumai and a tad on the dry side, we enjoyed our lunch! This is our first time trying panang curry (I think? I usually get green curry). While it's owned and run by Thai staff, I don't know if I'd say it's authentic Thai flavor but the curry and stir fry were tasty and flavorful. Reasonable prices, good portions. Prompt and courteous service. Four stars for overall experience, quality, and value.

Popular lunch spot. We came and ordered: 4*Mixed Vegetables with seafood: scallops and shrimps were tender, vegetables were fresh and the sauce was light, healthy and surprisingly good! I will definitely order it again 4*Pad Thai: very popular Thai noodle dish, the portion is big. Choice of chicken, pork or seafood.

Currently I am on the search for the best Thai in DC. I got the chicken pad Thai with tofu togo and it was a solid 3.5/5. The flavor was good and the container was packed with food. But, the noodles were dry and not at all saucy (something that is crucial for a great pad Thai).

I came to talay Thai for a happy hour. Overall, it was exactly what I expected. The deal was great. All the drinks are $6. I got the Siam dragon which was very strong and tasty. The service is quick and curt. If you're looking for a nice night out, this probably isn't the best option. It was very loud and filled with hill staffers. However, for a fun happy hour, it's a great vibe!

This a great lunch place close to the capitol and gives off a nice neighborhood feel. We were quickly seated for Friday lunch and we had a very good time. The drunken noodles were delicious and hit the spot. The prices are also very affordable and the food will definitely keep you full--I wish Thai places in Chicago were this cheap and efficient!

I have a new addition to add to my weekly Thai Thursday rotation. I've walked place this place a lot and recently decided to give it a try. I ordered pickup via DoorDash. I went with the Kaprow Basil with Chicken the Crispy Spring Rolls. The Kaprow was great and very flavorful. I asked for it to made Thai spicy and they totally delivered. The spring rolls were just okay. They weren't as flavorful as I've had at other places. They have a robust menu with great lunch specials and happy hour deals. I'm looking forward to trying new things and eating at the restaurant soon.

Excellent location near the one of Metro stations by Capitol Hill with an extended happy hour to 9 P.M. during the week. The staff is great with their consistent attentiveness and friendliness. The food is reasonably priced and there is plenty to choose from with a few select drinks and appetizers on the happy hour menu.

Great for the price. Drunken noodles were good. The pad see ew was good, but I wish I had gotten it with chicken instead of tofu.

I approach my review of this place thinking along two lines of thought. As a Vietnamese restaurant,…read morethis place is spacious and nicely decorated but very lacking as an example of what Vietnamese food is. More authentic flavors can be found 20-30 minutes away in East Falls Church at Eden Center. Having said that, I realize this place exists in Southwest DC and I should be grateful to find any Vietnamese food at all, no matter how mediocre. Yet even inside DC proper, where there's high-end (read overpriced) Vietnamese food and the standard spots for the everyman, the quality of food here does not measure up. I can think of a few small hole-in-the-wall Vietnamese places near Union Station, along 14th street, and even in Chinatown that have better Vietnamese food here. But if you're in the SW area and not keen on taking a metro ride elsewhere, having this place is better than nothing. Different than most Vietnamese restaurants where you sit down and they come take your order, you're supposed to grab a menu as you walk in and order at the counter. You're given a number and then you sit yourself. There's also a self-serve water station in case you didn't order a drink. It's functional but that level of service kind of undermines the nice decor here, pairing nice visuals with low-end service. However, I never go to an authentic Vietnamese restaurant expecting quality service, so whatever. The food is what I go for. And the food here -- I've had the phở and the bún thịt nướng (grill pork noodles with eggrolls) -- might scratch an itch but is ultimately lackluster. The phở is passable, though the cuts of meat are sparse. Flavor is not the best but it's not horrible either. The grilled pork on the grilled pork noodles however are super dry and I don't feel were made fresh. I feel as if they were reheated somehow. The flavor is off. The texture is tougher than it should be. And the fish sauce, which should pull this dish together and overcome other blemishes if delicious, also falls short. When I got the rice noodle dish, it came with a small portion of fish sauce. I poured it all in to the bowl but somehow every bite was still super dry. I had to ask for a second portion to be able to taste the flavor. But then I realized the flavor was not quite right. Overall I'm glad there's a Vietnamese restaurant in this part of town for times when I'm here and don't want to venture elsewhere. But should I ever really want solid Vietnamese food, I will venture elsewhere.

I stopped by during lunch time to take advantage of their lunch deal and ordered the Pho Tai Bo Vien (eye round steak and meatball) bowl and the Lemongrass Beef Plate. I had the pho and they gave me a lot of the steak which is a plus. Both have great flavor and portions are a good size. Only the Pho Noodles will come with the spring roll for the lunch special, other specials only come with a drink. The spring roll it comes with is veggie with a sweet and sour dipping sauce. They have plenty of drinks to choose from I think it is nice they offer sparkling waters as well. Overall, service is very fast for both dine-in and take out. There is plenty of seating. I would come again to try their banh mi sandwiches.

I sampled a crispy rice salad and some drunken noodles, expecting to eat about half of each. The salad was fantastic, with the light texture of the crispy rice allowing the aroma of lime, chili, and various other flavors to percolate through it. I asked them to hit me with the full spice level for my drunken noodles, and they were venomous, even once I had gotten used to them. The people were preparing some spice trays to be used for ad hoc seasoning, but I had no need of any further chili. A Thai iced tea with lychee I thought was going to be a milk tea, as the term Thai iced tea normally connotes, but it was in fact just tea with fruit. Still good though, and it came with one full lychee. Some of the other people eating around me noted that they planned on leftovers and instead ate everything they got, a comment that the portions aren't huge but also that the flavors are captivating. I finished mine too.

Was seated by a delightful young lady, and found the decor and layout to be quite pleasing; modest by elegant. As for the fare, it was indeed quite worth the walk. Ordered a bowl of Tom Yum and the Pad Thai Mun Goong. The Tom Yum was solid and quite flavorful, a flux of tangy lemongrass with the oniony sweetness of steeped scallions, and enoki mushrooms to provide some heartiness. The Pad Thai Mun Goong was a chef specialty pad Thai made with stir fried rice noodle, prawns shrimp tomalley oil (a crucial element for this version), egg and bean sprouts, naturally topped with green onions, peanuts and a lime for squeezing, and this also was quite phenomenal. Savory, sweet, a little tingle of sourness from the citrus in the mid-palate, and the juicy, briny shrimp balancing the dense carbs and rich flavorful sauce. All-in-all, I was well pleased this visit. As this is Padaek's second location, I hope they don't expand too much further/quickly and compromise on quality.
