Zero stars... Do not go here... Gel manicure took an hour... The young lady who started my nails took 40 minutes to take off the Polish. Someone else had to take over. I didn't get to soak my mails or a hand massage or lotion or anything but was still charged $ 30 as if I received a full manicure. I expressed my time limit at the beginning of my manicure and it was clearly disreguarded . So I have given this place a chance over and over. I went in 3 weeks ago to get a french and Pedicure. My Pedicure was AMAZING. I love the girl that does pedicures. My french Gel lasted one week. I went back again instead of apologizing and giving me a deal she charged me full price again. Only a week has gone by and my nails look awful. But I guess you live and learn. I rolled into Grand Nails with Astrid last weekend to get a pedicure and relax from a long week of packing and moving. There's nothing better than dipping your sore, tired tootsies into minty hot water, turning on the back massager and letting the nail technicians work out the tension in your feet. There must be some kind of stigma about men showing their faces in nail salons because I NEVER see any in these places. Guys, you REALLY don't know what you're missing. So just for you I would like to present... The Men's Guide to Pedicures: Lesson #1: Dude, Cut Your Toenails! Seriously. I've seen some of you guys at the beach, it's like your toes have never seen the business end of a pair of clippers. They're all tore up and cracked and ingrown. C'mon guys, when you finally get around to making sexy time with the ladies, what do you think will be going through her mind when she sees your nasty toenails? The ladies at Grand Nails will grind those talons down for you, even if they have to break out the pruning shears and the power sander. Lesson #2: Is That A Callus? What is that disgusting hard dry spot on your heel? It makes a scraping noise when you walk. You probably shouldn't be wearing flip flops with those revolting growths on your feet. That's foul, man. What self-respecting woman is going to let those feet anywhere near her? Listen to me, go into Grand Nails and let the ladies grind away at those calluses and dead skin. Your feet will turn out soft and smooth...and your lady might even allow you to snuggle with her in bed. Snuggling leads to other things, trust me on this one. Lesson #3: It's Chillaxin'! After your nail technician grinds, scrapes and atomizes the hard growths on your feet, you're in for some gratification. No, not self-gratification, save that for when you're home alone. I'm talking about a 20-30 minute foot, leg and calf massage that leaves you feeling semi-orgasmic. Don't worry about the chubber, just stay sitting down in the chair until it goes away. Lesson #4: It's Called Man-tenance! Look, you can call it what you want. 'Metrosexual', 'Effeminate', 'Girly.' You're the one missing out if you discredit it with names like this. I prefer to call it 'Man-tenance.' C'mon, you go to the doctor when you're sick, you go to the barber when you need a haircut and you go to the mechanic to get your car fixed. Why wouldn't you go to a nail salon to get your toes did? So I hope I've addressed some of the scarier parts of the nail salon experience and helped assuage your fears. My mother is a down-to-earth woman, far from prissy. In fact, she lives in a trailer (granted it's a vintage Airstream, which makes her more hipster than me), but she loves her pedicures as much as any other Real Housewife. So, every time she comes to visit I make sure to Yelp around for a good pedi. She likes the old-school, down & dirty pedis with the mechanical tubs and rough leg massages. It's a tall order, but I knew we could find her match on Grand Ave. This time, we ended up at Grand Nails because a few of the other highly-Yelped salons were closed on Sunday. We called in the morning to make a 5pm appt, arrived on time and were helped immediately by Vicky, the head honcho technician. While we did have to wait a good 15-20 mins for our services to actually start (mom's feet soaked until the water was cold), in the end we were both really pleased with our services. I got a very nice manicure from Vicky, and mom had "the best pedicure ever" from another woman. Somehow the total came to only $26, which I repeated back to them for accuracy. Sure enough, it really was that cheap. Looks like we've found our mother-daughter bonding spot! It's a no-frills salon, pretty crowded, and lacking in the decor department. You've got to be self-sufficient and grab your own magazines, and let them know when you're uncomfortable. They're busy keeping the place moving, but if you're looking for a reliably well-done mani or pedi, this is a good spot. Best of all, they use those electric foot shavers that will buzz all the dead skin and callouses off your feet. Bedtime cuddling just got less awkward. read more

I was a loyal customer but im just fed up. Almost all of the old workers left and now it's new faces-newbies who does a very unsatisfying job on mani/pedi's. It is sad...but it is what it is! My last visit, i realized i deserve better. I need to find a new shop. It's not worth waiting and sitting there forever for your turn especially when you have an appt! They need a make over especially with their management. They need permanant workers, more workers and new nail polish colors. they also need to STOP overbooking appts or taking customers when you have an appt coming up, and! they have such a ridiculous policy that needs to be changed!! Cause they str8 hustling customers for using their credit/debit card. I understand if you charge $1 fee for using debit card/credit card to pay but it is NOT NECESSARY to charge an extra $1 per person that you are paying for. For instance, if my sister decides to pay for me, my mom and herself one 1 card, it would be $3 extra on that ONE SAME TRANSACTION! That's hella annoying! AND...sometimes you have so many different workers working on you...that you won't know who to tip!! I hate how one person works on me and then another person come paints my feet and then another person does my manicure and so on!! Man...they get you on tips too!! It's ridiculous too! She blew on the wax each time so it wasn't too hot. She didn't double dip waxing sticks. She did small areas really fast making it as painless as possible. The little open roofed room you go in is private enough (though if you make any noise anyone getting their nails done will hear you) The bed has that paper on it like when you go to the doctor and I felt like it was perfectly sanitary. Not fancy, no scented candles, no immaculate decor, no soothing music, or fancy credentials, but hey, z to the illian + under arm for $40! Can't beat that! They didn't charge me for my underarms (probably cause I honestly don't have much hair there) but even if they did it would have only been $10 more. Also really happy they are open to 7:30pm weekdays, 6:30pm weekends for those of us who have to work! After some confusion over where I was meeting a friend for mani/pedis, we ended up here. Once I walked in I realized that this was one of the first places I tried when I moved to Oakland, but...... I also realized why I started going to other places. I realize there are some people who don't like the way one person collects the money at the Nail Shop, further down Grand, but the same thing happens here. Only one person [a dude] controls the cash register. And they ask you out loud if you want to add on a tip if you use a credit card.....ummm, I don't want to yell that across the store. On my most recent visit, I brought my own color and sparkly top coat, b/c I knew what I wanted. Their selection is ok, but not phenomenal. Although they do sterilize their metal tools in an autoclave, they use tissue paper for toe separators. ummm, ok. The woman working on me was nice enough, but that chick was ROUGH. When doing my pedi, I flinched numerous times. How much gunk could really be under my nails? Are you just taking out skin????????? ETA: I had to take away a star because I noticed some severe smudging. The sort of problem that is easily avoided by USING TOE SPREADERS INSTEAD OF TISSUE. ETA on 2/20/08. Do Not go here. They are horrible with the "just a few minutes" really meaning a 30-40 minute wait. Made an appointment today, they called to ask me to push it back. I did, and arrived at the time they suggested and was still waiting on the table for a brow wax for 25 minutes with no end in sight. Jenny was doing someone else's nails without any consideration of my appointment. I came out as they obviously weren't going to tell me she was busy and wouldn't be honoring the appointment time they gave me. I ended up at Grand Nails after checking out a few reviews and moseying down Grand Ave. Every other nail salon was booked up or busy for hours but grand nails had a few empty seats. I should have known it was because of the poor service. I asked for a full set and the hostess/nail tech/waxing lady greeted me but wouldn't give me an estimate on how long it would take. She started doing my nails and even though she could see the glue was dry she kept using it, even as the tips were popping up. Before she could even finish gluing them on she was called back to do a wax on someone. I waited about five minutes before she returned and no one came over to explain or fill in for her. She kept sneezing all over the place when she did come back but her conversation was pleasant when she was speaking to me, otherwise she was talking to her employees in their language which is so annoying and rude. Then after I showed her a picture of what I wanted she could not seem to get it right. I had resigned myself to going home and filing my own nails. I was then passed off to another lady who seemed to be rushing through applying acrylic and left a sloppy job under and around my nails. There is a dollar charge for using a card but you cannot include a tip...makes no sense. And when I asked the nail tech at the beginning if they accepted cards she did not explain there was a dollar charge. I don't mind paying it but after it taking over an hour for a horrible nail job I was not about to tip. The atmosphere is not too loud except for the Beyonce performance playing on tv and the chatter going on. The decor is cheesy, pieced together and extremely dated. I give it two stars because the first woman who helped me at least tried to accommodate me but I hated this place and I will NEVER go back. read more

This review is 2 weeks late, but here it is. I am sad to say that it feels like things have gone south at grand nails. I mean they still charge much less than most places, I just feel like the service has gotten a little sloppy. My guy and I went to pamper ourselves before leaving for a trip and it took a little longer than expected, at least for HIM to get his mani/pedi (no color, just clean up and buff). Just the pedi alone, he soaked for quite some time in water (no suds, no massage jets...just still water). I was disappointed that they no longer add the bath salts to the water while you soak for the pedi. Also, the nail polish colors seemed to be the same ones they've had forever =( yup, I got the same color on my nails for the 3rd time. read more

I cheated on Grand Nails this past weekend and I deeply regret it! I got a pedicure that was half done at a place that shall not be name, and it left me feeling so dissatisfied that I didn't feel the need to tip- yep, that's how bad it was and made me wish I came to Grand Nails instead. The ladies here are SUPER sweet and nice, they'll converse with you and will shape and file your nails based on your preferences. The pedicures are really fantastic, they go the extra length and I have never felt rush even though they are extremely busy. If there's anything that you'd like taken care of just be sure to tell them. The manicures are great too, but sometimes a bit inconsistent. I like my nails fully covered with nail polish, it's a pet peeve when the sides aren't completely filled in even if it's just a speck. Depending on the girls, sometimes my manicures are really great or just so-so. However, for a mani/pedi combo at $23 I cannot complain! They also offer gelish (gel polish) and it is FANTASTIC. Mine lasted for a whole month without chipping! =) FYI, the gelish polish is 23 or 24 dollars as it really does last you a long time so it's not part of the mani/pedi combo. read more

These ladies do it well and they were PACKED! on a Sunday afternoon...I don't think there was more than 5 minutes where someone didn't come in and say "Mani/Pedi" or "Eyebrow wax" etc. Anthony and I had moved all our stuff yet again, to our new 'hood in Oakland. Thank you all the nice people we have met, we appreciate your liberal and intelligent attitudes! Anyway, I digress...so we were bone dead and I said "let's get our toes did", and our BFF Lisa said "oh, go to Grand...they're great and a mani/pedi is only $22" righty then, we headed out. It seemed like 5 hours later (more like maybe 45 minutes) we were refreshed, relaxed and totally happy. They love the boys coming in and making all their customers feel like they're important, no matter how busy they were. Would give zero if I could. They should be called Grand Nasty Nails. We came for two walkin pedicures just now. When we walk in they are wiping down the diposable (which shouldn't be reusable) flip flop. Then she starts the water and opens a tub to get a bath soak. The bath soak is first off broken in half so they only use a half a customer. Then she drops one of the halves on the floor. She was about to go in the bucket to get another, but changes her mind and picks the one up off the floor and throws it in the foot tub. umm no. So we walked out. I normally go to Cosmo, they don't have walkins all the time. And there is a reason. I was just looking for a quick soak and polish change. I think I would have walked out with a virus. I'm good. Meh. I've experienced better. The prices are great! I spent $23 for white tips. My nails look okay. My nails have looked better. They didnt even push back my cuticles, or lotion and massage my hands. I am from New York but I assumed a hot towel and a lotion-massage was customary. Also, I brought my own tools. The nail file cut me because it was new. Okay, seriously.....who has a license to do nails, owns a salon, but doesn't know how to get gel polish off of acrylic nails? AND doesn't know how to do an acrylic fill. My girlfriend kept telling me "you're so fancy..." but I don't think Iggy would have this same problem! We had been to a couple salons already asking if they do acrylics and a couple said no or their acrylics person wasn't in yet, and this place said yes right off the bat and didn't say that the person who can help me didn't start for hours or that they can't remove gel polish without the person who knows how to soak off the polish but she isn't here. My girlfriends sat down to their Pedis thinking I would be helped soon, it was my actually birthday btw, and just looked at me with sad eyes and called me fancy. When they were down with their Pedis, one was seated to do her gel Mani while the other was sequestered to a drying stand for her toes. She wasn't helped either. By the time our 1 friend got her Mani, us two were just waiting. FINALLY I was asked by a man if I was the one that needed an acrylic fill and I always blew up. YES, I said and how long will it take but all he said was I do now (one lady was already there for 2 hours and told them she needed to get back to work but they didn't work any quicker). He then asked me what I had on my nails and I told him gel polish AND THAT IS WHEN THEY SAID THEY COULDN'T HELP ME. It had been over an hour and I could have gone somewhere else already to go my nails. To add insult to injury, when you pay here they add $! to your total if you pay with Credit or Debit card. I don't think that is legal at all! They are very quick to take your money but aren't quick with the work if you need a Mani quick. This establishment is the best in the grand/lakeshore area. My pedi lasts a good three weeks and they do a great job with dark polish application. Their massage chairs are great and very new. Also, their products smell sooo good! They use a pineapple sugar scrub that I just want to lick off my legs! And they give a kick-a$$ leg massage! The only constructive criticism I would give is to change up the Beyonce and Michael Jackson concert specials that are always on! I came in here today with my bf's sister who introduced me to this place. I originally just wanted to get a pedi to fix my tired feet from my Vegas vacation but I ended up also getting a gel mani which I have been wanting to try/get for a while now. It was $40 for the gel mani and pedi. I haven't done my nails at a shop in a long time but it seemed decently priced. They asked me to pick a color for my toes and the selection wasn't the greatest. I ended up with a purple color I probably have at home.. The next time I'd probably bring my own color for them to use on me. As for the gel color selections it's a lot better and actual colors I would pick out. We got seated and my water was pretty cold, I didn't want to ask for it to be hot cause I just didn't feel like I wanted to be an annoying customer today, so I just sat there while it soaked. Anna was the one who worked on my feet and she was thorough and got all the nasties out and scrubbed the bottoms so they are nice and smooth now. The tool they use seems scary but doesn't feel like too much. That's the first time I've seen that in a salon. It was very interesting! I also got a nice little rub down on my calves and feet and that was a nice addition to the soak and polish. Sally is the one who worked on my nails. She started taking off the polish and filing while I was still in the massage chair and then later on moved me to the mani tables off to the side. She took her time and made sure they were perfect. This is a big plus since I don't want to be paying someone to do my nails and do a half ass job. I really appreciate the time she took, even if she was super tired and falling asleep while doing my gel mani :(. Either way, they turned out great and I love the color! As I was waiting for the last hand to dry, she gave me a short shoulder and neck rub which hurt but felt great at the same time (I'm just sensitive to touch lol). The place is clean and I saw them taking out the tools out of the package from the sterilization machine. Big plus in the books.. There is no way you wanna be cut up by some dirty tools used on others! Yuck.. I also saw them cleaning the tub after I finished. They take credit, but there is a $1 fee for using a card. Not to say the environment is crappy, just that they're not the most posh place you can go. This is the only place I go to get my nails and waxing done. Their prices are reasonable and they have to be the friendliest people ever. Even when they are slammed, they won't rush your mani/pedi. They're also all little perfectionists which I appreciate. I just got my legs waxed here by Sally. It took about an hour and she was perfect: very nice, not too much talking, professional, and accommodating. Very thorough too... she made sure to check my legs from several different angles to ensure she got all the hair AND she tweezed at the end for any sneaky hairs that evaded the wax. Honestly though, the more important amazing thing about this place is the price: $15 for half-leg wax and $30 for whole! So cheap, especially for the good service. I've had only great experiences here at Grand Nails. The ladies here are extremely friendly and really get to know you. Unfortunately, I forgot the names of the two young ladies who usually help me since I haven't been in for awhile, but they're the two youngest ladies here. They're extremely sweet. As far as quality, it's a little above decent. I haven't had acrylics here done yet, but my nail color seems to chip within a few days. Honestly, it could just be me seeing as how I do keep active and I'm a bit careless. Although this place wasn't thaaaat bad, it didn't blow my mind either. I am not sure what the big hub bub is, seem like a typical nail place to me. In fact, with the high yelp ratings, I had high expectations but was left disappointed. I made an appointment for 3 people for a mani pedi. When we got there, there were a lot of people so we had to wait 30 min. Well they started on my friend, then me, and finally my other friend. Because we are started at different times, my friend who started before was done way before we were so once she was done, she just sat there waiting 30 min for us. On top of that, the water in their foot spa was only luke warm and because they were so busy, the lady who worked on me kept getting up to walk around to do other stuff and she never really worked on me so for a while, I sat there with my feet soaking in cold water. About 15 min later, someone else just took over. But this person didn't know how to do a French pedi so a third lady took over and had to remove what he had done and started all over again. The chairs aren't very new and the place is pretty small (about 8 pedi chairs and 4 mani tables). Cleanliness was only ok. The only positives of this place is their price, they do a pretty decent job, the staff is nice, and they accept credit cards. read more

I have a regular nail salon I go to usually around lunch time during work, but I'm always walking in so today I needed to get a manicure badly and opted to go somewhere else nearby because they were busy and told me to either come back later, call before I go in, or make an appt. Stumbled upon this salon after 3 unsuccessful trips to other nail salons that were overbooked. Decided to stay here and get it done. Got the gel polish color wheel to choose a color, sat down, a man wrapped my gelled nails and attended to another customer. As soon as I sat down, I realized it was one of the worst salon I went to years ago out of desperation for a manicure. They wrapped my gel nails and left me for 20 minutes!! I gave them the benefit of the doubt and stayed to get pampered. My nails were wrapped for longer than I'm used to (~3-5 mins), so I was starting to look around and see if the man would come back and help me. Another lady finished up with her client so came and started scrapping off my gel polish. After receiving 3/4 of a manicure completed, she let a younger girl take over. When it was time to polish my nails, she insisted 2 base coats. I wasn't use to having that, so I told her one would suffice. She kept on insisting so I just let her paint an extra coat. Going back and forth between both hands, she was surely multi-tasking with painting one side and manicuring the other all the while answering the business phone and helping customers getting pedicures get situated into a station. I was annoyed! After receiving 2 layers of base coat and 2 layers of color, she insisted on a 3rd layer of color. I told her I didn't have time because I was already running longer at a nail salon than usual (1 hr) and needed to get back to work. She tended to my left hand, painted a primer which the other lady didn't do to my right hand, painted 1 base coat, 2 layers of color darker than my right, and topped it off with a top coat. She came around me and brushed my hair to the side and said she was going to massage me. At this point I was irritated with getting 3 different people to work on me, manicurists tending to other customers in the middle of my session, paid for parking that didn't print out a ticket, so I was afraid of getting a ticket and declined. I came back, as I always do, eventually. The pedicure was nice, I've definitely had some bad pedicure experiences that are pricier with less service. There was a foot and leg massage (not that long, but still felt great), a showing of Beyonce's concert and Tan who was working on my feet was very attentive. As for TMI details: I liked how they rubbed oils to soften my cuticles. The clippings and cuticle pushing were done very well. Gentle, but thorough. I left with a few calluses on my feet which I really was hoping would be taken care of here. I didn't get use of the buffing machine which I think would have taken care of the job. I saw another lady get it though. I was told that my feet were smooth enough that they didn't need it and was commended for taking care of my feet... Overall it was a good pedicure, but I would definitely emphasize and remind them what details are important to you. read more

This place is the best bang for your buck for nails, by far. They not only do a good job, but they also throw in a little shoulder massage while you're there. I don't think you'll ever find another salon that will do that for $23 for a mani-pedi package and $30 for french mani-pedi. They use this industrial looking sander thing for callouses on your feet, which might turn some people off, but hey, whatever does the job is what I say. The girls tend to switch in and out of here, but everyone does a really good job, so I've never had a problem. Last time I went, they had an Adele concert playing, which made the experience even more fun. Bring cash for your tip! read more

Not sure how this place has so many positive reviews and ratings. My sister and I decided to get a pedicure here based on all the raving reviews, but left disappointed. Arrived, picked our colors, sat in the pedicure spa chairs...and played the waiting game. I understand that they might've been shot on workers and I was okay with that. However, my sister's pedicure was complete and dried before mine even began! The reason was due to the nail technician going back and forth between me and another customer! On top of that, the technician switched with another worker in the middle of my pedicure! Saying that I am disappointed is an understatement. The result of my horrible long long long pedicure: nail beds were not completely painted...I am certain that I will not return to this nail salon. read more

Decided to stop by here because I was in Oakland hanging out with some friends. Even though it was almost closing time, the owner welcomed me in with no hesitation and asked what service I would like. They set up really fast and got me in. Rose and Sally were the one who serviced me and I had very nice conversations with them. They are really nice and gentle while doing my mani and pedi. I do enjoy the extra attention of the neck and arm massage They had a wide range of nail polish brand and I was happy to see that they had OPI. One of my favorite brands. Definitely a place to visit when I'm ever visiting Oakland:) read more

Hands down, my go to spot. Especially considering the several salons in the immediate area. The workers are so kind to me always, but lately Jenny's been my nail tech and she's been killing it!
