The stars were finally aligned when we met Dan, owner of American Kitchen Concepts, Inc. He was highly recommended by a neighbor, and he lived up to the stellar recommendation. We met Dan in his office wherein we made design plans and chose from the varied, quality cabinets, countertops, backsplashes, and hardware on hand. Dan gave us wonderful ideas, that we never would have thought possible, had we designed the project on our own. Then came the hard part, the actual demolition and reconstruction. Dan's right hand man for this project was the highly skilled Cameron, a brillant carpenter and electrician. The scope of this project included removing two soffits and elongating one; electrical upgrading; removal of old and installation of new appliances, countertops, cabinetry, sink, faucet, disposal, and lighting; backsplash install; drywall install, repair and painting. Cameron was meticulous, professional, kept the worksite clean with daily sweepup and vacuuming. Cameron's attention to detail was highly appreciated. He treated our home as if it was his own. Dan and Cameron communicated effectively together and with us along this journey. In six weeks time, our kitchen was transformed from a 1980's look to one that is better than cool and modern. We love waking up everyday to our new kitchen and spending time in this room. If you are thinking about a kitchen remodel, don't hesitate to consider American Kitchen Concepts, Inc. Our project initially started as an involved kitchen remodel (demo down to the studs and moving two doors) in a c. 1900 house, however, it ultimately involved far more than the kitchen. Over the course of our remodel we developed a strong trust in the crew and their assessments- at multiple points there were things (not related to their work) that they could have covered up, been paid and moved on to their next paying job leaving us with a nasty surprise years down the line (eg failing joists/support beams). Instead, Dan and his crew slowed down their project to take the time to walk my wife and me through the potential implications of findings, the solutions (which may or may not have involved them) and then allowed us to properly address each issue before continuing the kitchen project. Even beyond the trust, which is so important in an involved project, American Kitchen Concepts craftsmanship and attention to details was exemplary leaving us with a beautiful, transformed first floor of our house! We cannot wait to show it off. Before hiring someone for this type of project, I believe it is completely reasonable for a homeowner to ask detailed questions about measurements, materials, waterproofing, scope of work, and the installation process. Unfortunately, the contractor never came to my home to measure the shower, and he did not have the dimensions of the existing shower. When I continued asking reasonable questions before committing to the project, instead of addressing my concerns professionally, he told me: "You are too tough of a client for a simple job. Good luck with your project." I found that response unnecessarily rude and unprofessional. Asking questions before spending thousands of dollars on a home remodeling project should not make a customer a "tough client." I was also unable to independently verify his claim that he has been in the business for 40 years. The online business information I found indicates a considerably shorter operating history. In addition, the company's BBB profile shows that it is not BBB accredited and currently has only a small number of BBB reviews. To be clear, I did not hire 4Gen Remodeling, so I cannot personally comment on the quality of their completed work. My review is specifically about my experience during the consultation and communication process. For me, a good contractor should be willing to answer reasonable questions, properly assess the project before quoting it, and treat a potential customer with respect--even if the customer ultimately decides not to proceed. We wanted a premium quality update for 20 year-old kitchen, but had a tight budget. After getting some eye-popping bids from contractors that wanted to do everything or nothing, we decided to DIY it and hoped for the best. We looked at all the online, RTA and big box retailers but weren't happy with the combination of quality, price and guidance we found. Fortunately, we came to Kraftmaid Vantage, Pandora and Shaw. Shaw worked with us to DIY what we could and provided help (patiently) when we asked. He had great ideas, but also listened to our ideas. He gave great guidance on configuration, color and countertops. The cabinets were professionally delivered on time. We had one damaged item and the factory didn't cut the oven cabinet correctly. Shaw sorted the problems quickly without issue. We're very happy with Kraftmaid Vantage quality and finish - particularly for about the same cost as online brands and for less than lower quality Kraftmaid product from the big box stores. Shaw also provided guidance on the quartz counter tops and arraged for their installation. His contractors were polite, professional, on-time and did beautiful work. Again, for about the same cost as the box box stores. While we aren't 100% finished (still need to install the range top in the island and some lighting), we are thrilled with the result.
