This afternoon Shauna repaired a flaw in a baby afghan that I recently knit for my expected grandson, due in May. Shauna was not only speedy, careful, and professional, she also made me feel so much better about myself as a fairly new and not very accomplished knitter. What a great yarn shop. I had a hard time limiting myself to a reasonable amount of yarn. They have a large selection to choose from. And it is just a few doors down from a wonderful quilt shop and a soap shop. If all that shopping makes you hungry, you can get pizza in the same plaza. read more

Wow! Great selection of wools, yarns and supplies for other fiber art projects. Just took the 3D needle felting class with Sandy and had a wonderful time. Grandmas Spinning wheel is a nice place to spend the afternoon. It does not matter if you knit, spin , weave or crochet. I bring my spinning wheel or knitting and spend the afternoon chatting. If they don't have it in stock ask for a special order, if it has not been discontinued it can usually be ordered. There is a wide selection of supplies including knitting needles, crochet hooks, spinning wheels, drop spindles and looms. Lots is accessories too. This is a very cozy place with good people. I have 2 yarn shops closer to my home, but this is worth the drive. read more

I have not knit in over a decade. I walked into Grandma's Spinning Wheel. When you enter the store, there are baskets at the entrance way to use when shopping and picking yarn. Then I was greeted and asked if I needed help. Why yes I did. I had some yarn, needed a pattern, and needles. Shawna (I don't think I spelled her name correctly) helped me find a pattern and spent time with me to help me understand the pattern. I stayed and knitted for awhile. They asked my name. I told them. The staff remembered it immediately. When I left, they said good-bye using my name and said see you tomorrow. Guess what? I went back and have been back as many times as I can. I highly recommend visiting the store to see their wonderful inventory or learn how to knit. There is table in the back where you join other knitters to talk shop. How this store has 5 star reviews, I'll never know. It looks and feels like a swap meet. No rhyme or reason to any organization. Not enough of any yarn for a large project, lots of old looking novelty yarn. They literally had a rubbermaid tub storing yarn with the yarn displayed on the lid. There's yarn shoved everywhere. It seemed very dirty and unkept. I didn't want to touch anything. Let after 10 minutes and didn't buy a thing. read more

THE BEST YARN STORE IN THE SOUTHWEST!! I am from California, and a frequent visitor to Arizona, and recently Santa Fe, New Mexico. Vickie and Michael's store has the richest collection of yarn lines, colors, and warm advice and conversation I have experienced anywhere. I have highly sensitive skin, so I am primarily a 100% cotton yarn knitter. In addition to their huge varied collection of wool, merino, and silk yarns, these folks have so many kinds of gorgeous, mind-cartwheeling color combination cotton yarns than I have ever seen. It is very easy get very carried away in here. I have lots of food allergies, so my food choices are very limited. And like people with food allergies with limited choices in life already, it is discouraging for sensitive skin folks to be offered so few choices in cotton yarns. What a huge treat to have a lush buffet laid out before you of colors and textures. Most stores all over the Southwest have next to nothing in cotton. This store does not disappoint, so refreshing to have so much to enjoy....my wheels turn very fast in Vickie and Michael's store, lots of creativity at every turn!! If this is not enough reason to venture in, they have a reward program. This is my favorite shop, hands down. I never feel any pressure to buy anything, and when I do, they never try to get me to buy something more expensive, like some shops I have been to. It is a very homey atmosphere, and I love how they have a table set up so that kids are welcome. Whether I am there to stop in and get something specific, browsing or hanging out and knitting, I am always happy to come, and always leave with a smile on my face! read more

If you knit, crochet or even remotely thinking about it this store is a must --worth the trip from anywhere and I know because I'm coming from New Jersey and this is a number 1 stop for me! TREMENDOUS selection of yarn, loads of samples on display but the best thing are the people who work here! Friendly, knowledgable, patient, and so helpful! I guess this place is good for what it is, but in comparison to the LYS I frequent, it was beyond disappointing. I did not feel welcome at all, nor did anyone offer assistance or even a friendly "Hello." They did, however, watch me like a hawk as I navigated the shop, despite the fact that I didn't even touch anything out of fear of getting griped at. The setup of the store is too crowded and dark for my liking, and I left without anything but a bad feeling. I won't be returning to this store. read more

My 11 year old son received a Star Wars crochet kit for Christmas and was so excited. Of course... I don't know the first thing about crocheting! We stopped in to Knit Night (Wednesday evenings) where we were able to talk with the real pros, purchase the right tools for the job, and start to get some pointers from some pretty fantastically great people. He now wants to go every week and is disappointed when we can't! Vicky and Mike are amazingly knowledgeable, have fantastic fibers of all types, and treat their customers like family. Ten thumbs up. This store is decent, but not well organized at all! It is very hard, if not impossible to find what you are looking for because they have the store "organized" by fiber content, not weight. Even then, it is not totally by fiber content. In addition to that, their store is so crowded with yarn, you can't see what all they have. There are balls of yarn in rubbermaids under the shelves...and therefore you can't find anything. There are much better yarn stores in town...with adequate space and better organized. If you go here, plan to spend an hour just getting through everything. read more

Although I live in Tucson, I didn't hear about Grandma's Spinning Wheel until I went to Portland, OR. I thought it was just for people who spin, but it's also great if you crochet, knit, weave, and/or spin. You can get knitting help for free, whereas some other shops charge you. They also have a free knit night and a free spinning night. Everyone is very friendly, and they quickly learn your name. I took a spinning class here, which was also fun. I would recommend this place to everyone. read more

This is just about the least organized yarn shop I've ever been in. There is no effort to display products nicely, the yarn is piled around in plastic bins. It is rather like going to a garage sale. They have a fairly decent selection of yarn, if you are willing to dive through the bins, but their supply selection (such as needles) is minimal. "Grandma" is more interested in pushing her own interests than she is in getting you what you need. When she doesn't have the needles I want, she tries to sell me different ones to use with her techniques. "Haven't you heard of the magic loop method?" Well, yes I have, but I still want a 16" circular. Yeesh. In addition, twice she has tried to sell me yarn that made no sense for the projects I wanted to make. Her husband is better to work with, do if you go there, look for him. The other yarn shops in town are much nicer. read more
