At this point, I would be fearful of the level of care (neglect?) they are giving to their hospice patients who do not have a voice to advocate for themselves in their final weeks or days. This negative review is long and detailed because I don't want anyone to have to go through the experience they put us and my mother through. I hope it is helpful to other families going through such excruciating end-of-life decisions for their loved ones. We were on the waitlist for the "next available room", just awaiting transport, for my dying mother who is in terrible pain after fracturing both hips and a femur (simultaneously). After being told at her final assessment on January 19 that transport would "very likely be tomorrow", there was an abrupt change. They canceled the required Covid test they had scheduled for immediately before transport, and suddenly nothing was available. Every day for five days. Strange, because a friend had his mother admitted that second day. First red flag of their deception. Ultimately, after five days and no response other than terse texts each day saying "still no room, should be tomorrow", we learned from their team that they LOST their license to be able to provide inpatient hospice care! This was Tuesday, January 24, 2023. (What??) After that call, they ghosted us. We could not get a return call, text or email from anyone, trying daily. Meanwhile, my mother is still in terrible pain at an assisted living that provides no help. And because of her terrible pain, her Alzheimer's suddenly declined tremendously, immediately after the injuries. She is a shadow of herself and suddenly does not recognize me or the rest of her family. Up till the day of the injuries, she lit up when I walked in the room, greeted me enthusiastically, and spoke to me and her (private) caregivers. Now she sits in pain with her eyes closed, and when she does open them, there is zero recognition there. She isn't eating, is barely drinking, and is not getting the pain control medication she needs--in fact, which we were told by their nurses is "urgent." It's tragic. Out of desperation, we finally contacted corporate management and, after their initial shock and promises to "get to the bottom of it right away", we learned the truth. In a one-sentence text (!) the next day, they stated that they "can no longer meet my mother's needs." (What?!??) She had been assessed, accepted, and we were merely waiting for an available room, "any hour now", since January 19. We were told they would call me when transport (ambulance) was ready. Literally overnight, they suddenly "can't meet her needs?" The definition of Hospice is to care for a dying patient. What "needs" can they suddenly not meet? After that, once again, we have been completely ghosted. We have learned that several patients have been admitted to inpatient in the subsequent week, and we cannot get a return phone call or even a simple explanation. After my initial reaction of fear and denial when her doctor recommended Hospice (and wrote and order for it), and then the T. Boone Pickens / Faith nurses and sales team convinced us by explaining how badly Mom needed to be there "to get the medication and care she needs", I am heartbroken and helpless thinking of her condition now and her constant, untreated pain that she will suffer for her remaining days. The facility is physically beautiful. LOTS of money has been spent on a pretty building, nice fixtures, an attractive entrance, nice artwork--nothing the patients care about or need. It is just a lot of smoke and mirrors for prospective families during sales appointments. But it is painfully obvious that is where their priority is. Not the patients. Not the families. This sad fact is echoed repeatedly in other reviews. My assumption, since we can't even get the decency of an explanation, is that they have shifted to accepting only the private pay "Residential" patients (at $12,500/month) while leaving patients desperately awaiting hospice hanging alone in agony. We knew T. Boone Pickens. In fact, my parents bought his condo in Turtle Creek (and lived there for 12 years until assisted living). He would be rolling over in his grave if he knew what is happening at his namesake facility. PHARMACY? Singular? How do you lose your only pharmacy that allows you to be in business? No redundancy? They are still accepting residential and respite patients which are private pay, but not inpatient hospice patients which are paid for by Medicare. Is this a pharmacy issue or something else? We asked their representative case worker if they had any visibility as to when they would have the pharmacy issue resolved. She said management was not comfortable giving any timeline. After that call all we received was silence and no response to multiple attempts. We were able to find out a week later, after being connected to the CEO, that they were admitting patients for IV hospice care - Just not us. I feel lied to, manipulated and ultimately abandoned. We have had to scramble to find another provider. The process of managing your mother's demise is emotionally taxing enough. To add the additional stress and frustration through an exceptionally disorganized process is inexcusable. As a family we had two requests. 1. We do not want our loved one to be in pain, 2. the few requests she (the patient) may have would be received and acknowledged with responses to resolve all issues as expeditiously as possible. Most all employees who have been in contact with our mother have been very nice. That said, being nice is great but actually doing what has been promised means more than anything else. She has not found this experience to be helpful and/or reassuring.

Holding Hands Hospice (HHH) is a boutique hospice group owned by a lovely, dedicated gentleman named Aqua Umoren. During the 12+ years they have been in business, he has built a team of amazing, dedicated individuals, the majority of whom have been with him for 5+ years. To me that speaks volumes, considering this is such a difficult industry to work in, with a lot of turnover. Our mother lives at The Preston of the Park Cities, an upscale assisted living facility where she is well cared for, however she is at the point in her long life whereby we needed the extra support hospice offers, which is provided through Medicare, at no additional cost. Mary, an RN is mom's case manager from HHH. Both she and Aqua made it a point of coming over and meeting me when I was in town a couple of weeks back since I live out of state. Prior to that I only knew their voices over the phone along with contact via text messages. They both are such genuine, personable individuals who love what they do, and have loads of compassion for those they are caring for. They matched my mother with an amazing woman named Lawana who assist mom Monday through Friday mornings, showering her & getting her ready for the day. Lawana arrives during the timeframe my mother requested, which is not an easy thing to. Lawana goes above and beyond, keeping our mother company after she has tended to her morning needs. They talk, and even go down to have coffee together. Aqua understood right away how impactful this type of high touch care was to our mother's well being, and rearranged Lawana's schedule to make this level of care possible. Aqua and Mary consistently keep me up-to-date on how mom is doing and any changes that are taking place. According to the Director of Resident Care at The Preston, HHH has had the best communication with her and her staff of any hospice group they have worked with. I just don't see how any other hospice organization can measure up to what HHH provides. They are truly the best of the best.

He spent a week in the hospital and 3 days in hospice before he passed. This small, 15-bed unit with large windows was exactly what we needed. Several extra folding chairs were provided when family came to visit. A recliner or stuffed chair was in every room. Each room had a large private bathroom. There were 2 nurses (RNs) on duty and only 1 other patient on the floor while my dad was there. So, basically, he had his own private nurse for his brief stay! Although I worked mostly with Brandon, all the nurses were kind, compassionate, attentive, informative, respectful to my comatose father, talking to him often about what they were doing. I really like that. The family was also notified immediately of any meaningful change in his breathing status. His passing was very peaceful, like a slipping away. All in all, it was a very positive experience, and I recommend the hospice at Presby for any shorter-term hospice need.

They advertise, or used to, that they will make a stuffed bear out of the clothing of your loved one. After the sub-standard, or non-existent at times, care my dear husband received, a staff member did come and pick up some of his clothing, his treasured cashmere jacket and a pair of his bluejeans. Time passed. And passed. I called to inquire about the status of my bear. I did receive a call back. Allegedly, EVERYONE CONNECTED with my husband's clothing has died! The volunteer who picked up his clothing and the bear maker. His clothing has disappeared. No offer of restitution has been made. I've been brushed off. I am so seriously angry with this Bozo outfit. They have a name change, but the product is the same. Excuses after excuses. Avoid at all costs.

She has been helpful, informative and supportive. Today the weekday nurse came by at noon and advised nursing home staff that my mom would pass within 24 hours. She did not inform me of that prognosis. I only found out because I was concerned watching my mom so I called the hotline. The nurse called me back and told me I was right to be concerned. Do not expect anything to change. They will keep giving her pain meds every two hours. I am now sitting here 6 hours later alone, with my mom at death's door with zero support from Three Oaks. To my knowledge they have no intention of sending anyone up here to assist with her final hours. I have seen hospice workers many times in the past and they have all been phenomenal. In this case, I cannot say that because there are no workers to be found for me to comment on. I am with my mom and I will be with her to the end as she was with me when she brought me into this world.

My hope is that under your leadership, no other family will suffer the nightmare mine did. In April 2025, my 87-year-old father died at home, not peacefully, but in pain, calling my name, without the comfort VITAS promised. We were assured VITAS would deliver compassionate, round-the-clock hospice care. Instead, they gave us a generic binder, no care plan, no medication list, and no guidance. A nurse arrived hours late and said morphine would come in the morning. It didn't. It took 2.5 days before my father received a small dose, just enough for a child. There was no case manager assigned to us. I was passed from person to person, begging for help as my dad deteriorated. VITAS falsely reported five nurse visits to Medicare, none of which occurred. The only nurse who showed up and called the situation "appalling" slipped out the door and left me alone while my brother and husband ran from Walgreens to Walgreens, trying to find the morphine VITAS failed to provide. My dad died while they were gone. His last moments were spent in fear and pain, not surrounded by his sons as he deserved. Even your own staff admitted this should never have happened. I have reported this to Medicare, Texas Health & Human Services, the Joint Commission, the OIG, the Texas Attorney General, and more. I have all the records, call logs, photos, and eyewitnesses. This review is not written out of anger. It's written out of heartbreak. Families need to know that not all hospice care is created equal, and that VITAS, despite its name, failed to meet even the most basic standards of human dignity. Please, Mr. Wherley, take action. She very friendly and goes out of her way to answer any questions I might have. She makes sure I'm comfortable with what she has to do and I have gotten used to being cleaned and bathed. I wish Vita's had more Aisha's on staff. She is an asset and a very valuable piece of this organization. I hope they recognize and treated Aisha as a valued employee. When his lungs began to fail and he elected not to continue treatment we had to find hospice care quickly. The VITAS facility came recommended by our hospital. It was very nice and quiet, located in the back of the Carrollton Regional Medical Center on the entire 4th floor, so it is low traffic. The waiting rooms for family are spacious and well appointed, and the room are a nice size. We were lucky enough to get one of the larger rooms with a sitting area and a pull out bed/couch for sleeping near your loved one. As nice as the facility was, the staff are what made it 5 star. Everyone was so kind and compassionate towards my dad, loving on him as he lay in his bed, with his lungs slowly failing. It was a sad experience made better by the staff who all go out of their way to help their patients and the families through the difficult end of life transition. While I don't take away from the 5 star rating, some of the furniture was heavily used and could have been more comfortable, but the caring staff are what makes this place top notch. I highly recommend it.

My family's experience with VITAS Inpatient Hospice in Carrollton:…read more * DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. * I strongly encourage families to thoroughly research all hospice options before choosing VITAS Inpatient Hospice in Carrollton. * In my opinion, no hospital or case manager should refer patients here without carefully evaluating the quality of care being provided. * The unit appeared to be chronically understaffed for the number of terminally ill patients requiring intensive end-of-life care. * Several staff members lacked the compassion, empathy, and urgency that patients and families deserve during a loved one's final days. * There were no accommodations for family members who wanted to remain overnight. The room only had a standard upright chair--no recliner or sleeper chair. Families were left to purchase their own air mattress if they wanted to stay at the bedside, despite the limited space. * I remained at my mother's bedside throughout her entire stay. I genuinely believe my constant presence was the reason she died with dignity and with as little pain as possible. Families should not have to provide around-the-clock advocacy to ensure their loved one receives appropriate care. * Hospice is supposed to provide comfort, dignity, compassion, and peace. Unfortunately, that was not our experience. * After my mother's death, I contacted VITAS Patient and Family Support Services to report my concerns. I was assured that a Bereavement Manager would contact me. As of four days later, no one from VITAS had reached out to offer bereavement support or to follow up regarding the concerns I raised about my mother's care. * Even after death, our family has felt abandoned and unheard. *, staffing shortages, or whether basic comfort measures are being provided. * Every person deserves compassionate, respectful, and dignified end-of-life care. Sadly, that was not our experience. Again, based on my family's experience, I do not recommend VITAS Inpatient Hospice in Carrollton.
