First of all, we decided to go through the drive thru since there were no parking spaces available. Why on earth move your store to a spot without enough spaces? That decision was frustrating b/c the young thing taking orders was chatting it up with the car ahead of us while we, and at least three cars behind us waited. Patiently. I even had time to get out of our car in order to read the menu as to be ready with our order (need a menu cars can read b4 reaching order taker!), to be expedient. Finally got to order taking step and out of: Strawberry syrup, chocolate syrup, lactose free flavors and bananas, and who knows what else, as those are only the items that affected our order! Finally got through that ordeal and pulled up to the window. Imagine our surprise when, after paying just a hair under $20, we got a banana split, with no banana as expected, but also without the sauces my husband ordered! It was plain, save for some paltry crushed nuts. My "medium" sundae, the largest offered, was in a 9oz cup, not even filled up, see picture taken. When I questioned the girl at the window if I had indeed received the "medium", she assured me that I had, and that "it was even measured"! Oh my. My advice? Unless they see the light on customer service and make ordering changes to ensure Saturday night crowds get what they want, there will be no more crowds! Cream City, all the way.

My husband liked his but said didn't taste the Carmel. The inside was clean and lots of seating. They could use a few more wall decorations, but again they just opened so I am sure it is a work in progress. I love the fact that they include all dietary options. The Custard Cabin offers fine quality desserts that should please anyone. Certainly the quality that you receive comes at a cost- there is no getting around it. Food (and dessert especially) products can either be cheap or good- you generally can only pick one. If you are price sensitive, there are other lower quality options available elsewhere. Kids generally don't know the difference and some times don't finish what they are given- so I can understand why parents might be price sensitive. Be forewarned if your offspring are as described. Having said that, if you are an adult with a reasonably refined taste for frozen desserts, you'll understand where that extra money spent at Custard Cabin went. It is true that they generally have 1-2 "flavors of the day" plus the standby vanilla and chocolate, but they have frozen pints and quarts usually in many flavors to go. You may want to consider the frozen pint/quart option if the flavor of the day just doesn't do it for you. Sometimes they run out of vanilla and/or chocolate close to closing time. You may want to call ahead if your heart is set on the old standbys.

A road trip stop somehow turns into a shopping expedition. We stopped at the Crossville location on our way to Nashville and accomplished the essentials: Glazed pecans. Barbecue. A case of water. Road snacks we probably didn't need but somehow couldn't live without. Mission accomplished. Now, compared to some of the giant Buc-ee's locations, this one feels a little smaller. It's still enormous by normal gas station standards, but in the Buc-ee's universe, it's more of a midsize SUV than a monster truck. One disappointment was that the fried chicken and burritos weren't being served during our visit. That's like showing up to a baseball game and finding out the home team has the day off. Still, it's hard to be too critical. The store was clean. The selection was huge. The bathrooms were spotless, as expected. And somehow I walked in for gas and left with enough snacks to survive a minor natural disaster. That's the Buc-ee's experience. Four stars. Because even a smaller Buc-ee's is still better than about 99% of the gas stations you'll find on the road.
