Chicken Gyro & Extra Crispy Sweet Potato Fries...So Good..!
    Paul S.

I Love, Love, Love Grape Vine. This is a very nice family run business. The Owners Phillip & Jill are good people. Check Out my photos. The food is so good. Prices are right on for the Newton Highlands area, pretty affordable. The Grape Leaf is clean, staff is nice and helpful. Everything on the menu is incredible. My personal favorites are the Sweet Potato Fries. Ask for them "Extra Crispy". I also really like the chicken Gyros, Salads & the Homemade Greek Yogurt is amazing. Grape Vine is also Wheelchair accessible "No Power Door" but someone will open it for you. They do take Credit Cards as well. Eating here, you will not be disappointed.

Despite the vertical rotisseries on display, the lamb gyro I ordered looked and tasted like boiled meat. It resembled nothing like I would expect to come off a rotisserie. The meat was floppy like a roast beef. Definitely would not try that again. Their hand cut pita chips appear to be deep fried and improperly seasoned. Some pieces were coated in salt and some pieces had no salt at all. They were crunchy on the outside but then spongy and dripping oil which typically means the oil was not hot enough. I had also ordered a pastitsio which to my dismay when I got home, looked like it was leftovers from last month. The top was a displeasing grey brown color and was dry with an odd aroma. Pretty much no béchamel sauce. See sad photo. I rarely ever throw away food but unfortunately I threw it out because I was worried about getting sick, especially with that pastistio. Terribly disappointing.

I was excited to hear that a new Greek restaurant was opening in Newton Highlands because it is my favorite kind of food. They had a grand opening a week ago Saturday (that we missed) so my first trip was last Tuesday. My wife and I were offered samples of the chicken and pork it was awesome! We decided to get the chicken kabob Gyro with Home made pita and tzatziki and a side of rice pilaf. It was delicious to put it mildly. Fresh and yummy! I highly recommend eating here. We have been back a few times since our first visit !

Grape Leaf in Newton has outdoor dining, socially distanced.

I always liked their tofu gyros, and now they have real silverware and napkins for the seated area.

Easily the best greek food in Boston, although the Feisty Greek is also on point. Highly recommend the gyro or the moussaka.

First time at Bar Vlaha with a friend- overall, solid but not life changing…read more We started with spreads and bread and we got the trio: Kopanisti (whipped feta), Melitzanosalata (charred eggplant), and Taramosalata (carp roe). The dips were all good. The whipped feta was creamy, the eggplant had that nice smoky depth and the taramosalata was super interesting, very briny in the best "yes, this is definitely roe" kind of way. Only note is that the Horiatiko Psomi (house bread) could've been warm/toasted for my preference especially given the price of the dips, I expected the bread to be a little more elevated too Then we got the Lahanodolmades (cabbage stuffed with beef and pork, rice, mint, avgolemono). Well seasoned, the cabbage was tender without falling apart and that lemony avgolemono sauce tied everything together- it was bright and savory. For mains, we shared the Moschari me Damaskina (red wine-braised beef cheeks with prunes, trahanas) and Arni stin Souvla (slow-roasted lamb leg). The beef cheek was ridiculously tender- like barely touch it and it falls apart. Rich, slightly sweet from the prunes, with that warm spice note of the cinnamon that balanced the tomato acidity really nicely. The lamb was cooked well and definitely tasty but nothing super extravagant compared to other Greek lamb dishes I've had. Still really yummy especially with the onions and a squeeze of lemon cutting through the lamb. Portion-wise, the pricing felt a little high for what you get but the ambience is beautiful, definitely a great date night spot. Low lighting, cozy, feels elevated without being stuffy

That's already a steep price for a salad. I ordered a greek salad with chicken souvlaki. I didn't know kebab and souvlaki were that much different... so ok.... now my salad is $24. Oh. 25% more money.. I guess it's because they're about to put a massive amount of chicken on it because that must be the portion of souvlaki to justify the price? Nope. 5 tiny chunks of grilled chicken... about 1/3 of the kebab chicken it seems. Wow. I asked for some extra feta on my $24 salad. That's $2 more. I'm now having a $26 salad. I've noticed this in the past as well. They will find any way possible to upcharge you. I skipped a drink anticipating maybe a cup was $6 and the ice another $3. Lids for $2. Straw a bargain at $1.50. I will say this. At least for $26 I got a hefty amount of veggies. Not $26 worth but by comparison, when I order or do take out the containers are tiny. I swear it's a 1/3 of the size you get in the restaurant. I would be paying $26 for 1/3 of what I got. I like the quality of the food here but they're charging sit down prices for a counter service place. The staff seems really indifferent to just charging you whatever. You want extra tzatziki with your gyro? They sell $10 tubs. Don't dare ask for a side portion. You're in for that $10 tub. Now your $18 gyro is $28 but at least you got a container of tzatziki, more than you need for the gyro. I love the food but I feel like I need to negotiate every item I order and ask the price. Any deviation and you're looking at a 30% increase. You want those fries well done? That will be another $6. I'm no longer tipping at this place. For $26 salads, the staff better have Healthcare and be making 4 times the minimum wage.
