Grape leaves has a new Chef-owner for the last 4years. Some of the food is still good, with some exceptions. Since my entree was sooo awful I can't give any higher than 1star. Avoid the kibbeh entree, $15 but size of an appetizer, rock hard shell too, received two kibbeh a little bigger than golf balls. I couldn't cut the kibbeh open with a fork, and it bounced off the plate when trying to cut it with the butter knife. The crust was about 3/8" inch thick, deep fried hard as concrete and nearly broke a tooth trying to bite it. There was only about a tablespoon of meat inside each of two kibbles. What are they doing in the kitchen? These had to have been twice fried. I was hungry for sure after that rip off. I recall that entree to be very good under the previous owner. Kabobs, falafel, stuffed grape leaves were good, but i only sampled those. Prices are higher @$17-19 entree. Don't know if lunch is cheaper. Lacking wait staff, so we were going up to counter getting things a lot. They also ran some high pitched like a vacuum in back, nearly the whole time we were eating, very annoying, and this was around 6pm. Not sure I would rush back there because of higher prices, lack of wait staff, and "noise" problems in the dining room. read more

We have talked before- I always make sure to remind you how perfect the hummus is and please don't ever change it :) "extra sumac please". I was first introduced to this place about 11 years ago by my old neighbor who was a plumber I would assist on the weekends. Over the years I have frequented here often. I am not sure why some people rated this place so poorly. It's a small place with limited staff so not meant for large parties. The place is clean, the service meets minimum requirements. The food is the highlight. We had the sampler plate ,a large salad and two Tagines (Moroccan stews) We are from the Middle East and to us all plates tasted very fresh and made with quality ingredients. We live in Chicago but this place was memorable enough to make us come back on a regular basis as long as the food quality remains the same. Well, Grape Leaves surprised us with their great entrees. I would give food and service all 4 stars but the interior 1 star. I didn't like the appearance nor the smell of this place when I walked in. They seriously should get a better ventilation system and replace the chipped tiles on the floor. I almost said to myself that this would be my last time in there. We shared the stuffed grape leaves appetizer. I ordered the Veggie combo platter with Lentil soup. my coworkers ordered Veggie kabob and Chicken kabob. A cup of Lentil soup was served first. What an disappointment. Very watery and salty. Then stuffed grape leaves were really good. Things were finally turning to a good direction. I loved the Hummus and Fallafal in my platter. It made a perfect combination when I get fresh salad, crispy Fallafal, and creamy Hummus into the warm pita. Yummy! Veggie kabob was really tasty with tons of grilled vegetables in a huge plate. loved this cozy little Oak Park spot. I eat 90% vegetarian, so I loved the vegetarian friendly selection. The falafels were the best I've had! Moist, tasty and crispy. I had the grape leaves, babaganoush, salad and rice and everything was awesome! I also tried the sage tea, which was tasty. The service was decent and it was nice to get a table at 7:30 pm on a Saturday night without having to wait. Excellent prices and portion sizes. WOW! this place changed ownership and has gone down hill. The space was about half full last Friday and while we were waiting we saw a couple come in and leave. We waited to be acknowledged and after being ignored for 7 minutes got up and left. The restaurant is now BYOB and they charge a $5.00 corkage fee. How can they charge a CORKAGE FEE when they DO NOT HAVE A LIQOUR LICENSE? I'm sad because I have had hundreds of wonderful meals here in the past. read more

This small Moroccan restaurant is a hidden gem. The food was absolutely amazing. The lamb couscous was PERFECT. everything was cooked beautifully. For fairly simple dishes they were absolutely bursting with flavor in every bite. The portion sizes were huge. 10/10 will be coming again. read more

Was in the mood for hummus so found this place because the prices were reasonable. For the price, the food wasn't bad at all. The service on the other hand was very slow...almost an hour to bring us salad and hummus? Okay... plus it's a very small restaurant which wasn't crowded either. The waitress said the wait was on the leaves. So, I got the combo plate so I could try a little bit of everything. The hummus was pretty good, but I've had better. It was a bit too creamy, I like it a little thicker. The falafals were my fav...so good. Salad was fresh, but wasn't feeling the stuffed leaves. The seasoning was just too much of something. Absolutely DELICIOUS!!! I ordered the vegetable kabob with some babaganoush and pita. I am so impressed. I'm greek and it's hard to find food that tastes like home. I know this isnt exactly Greek food but it tastes just like the food my grandma made! Just simple, delicious, and not heavy. I've been trying to eat a more veggie based diet and the flavors Grape Leaves presents will definitely make that an easy task. I will definitely be ordering again. I can't wait to try more! I started coming to Grape Leaves with my family when I was in high school (about 10 years ago). We lived bout 30-40 minutes away, but whenever we were in town made sure to stop here. I continued to visit occasionally when I was in college, and now that I live in California, I STILL visit when I'm back in town. The food is so fresh, flavorful, great service. The prices are a bit high for the quality of food received. The service was inadequate - no water refills, no check-ins, needing to request the bill and it was freezing. They are a BYOB, but don't tell you that the charge to bring a bottle of wine is 7.00. Also, they do not divide payments for multiple credit cards. My friends and I had a terrible time when we went there on December 30th. We wanted to have a wonderful meal then go to Brookfield Zoo Lights. The owner ignored us and paid lots of attention to another table of two women. My table was three women: all women of color. There were no other customers. He barely noticed us when we walked in. It took him 15 minutes to come and greet us. It took another 15 minutes to take our order-and I had to wave him down to do this. He forgot to bring us bread. He forgot to give me a paper bag for my take home container. He did, however, lavish lots of time and attention on the other two women also dining that evening. I approached him at the cash register and talked to him about the disappointing service. His response to my saying we would not return? That is fine. It's Oak Park, and perhaps you can find higher quality in Greektown in Chicago... but you're in Oak Park in a fairly deserted area of Oak Park for decent food that's affordable. The food, service, and quality are where they should be. They never let me down. I do not go as often as I'd like because I'm trying to save money, but I go often enough to crave it when I do not go. I live in the neighborhood and come to Grape Leaves often. It is by far one of my all time favorite restaurants. It is very reasonably priced and the quality of the food is fresh and consistent. First time visiting this restaurant today and I was utterly impressed by everything but mostly with Caroline who was probably the sweetest person I met working in a restaurant. She was so helpful in answering my questions about vegan meals. She went through each item on the menu and with her suggestion, my meal was so delicious. Fresh and delicious! We just moved to Oak Park and ordered delivery from here within the first week while we were settling in and we were not disappointed! This past week we stopped by for lunch and while the dining room was crowded we were greeted w a smile and seated right away. Ordered the grape leaves and babaganoush for an appetizer and then two falafel sandwiches and tea for lunch. Best baba I've ever had and the grape leaves were just right. We came here for dinner, and were very disappointed. This place is not good, even considering their low prices. My date got the chicken kabob with rice and I got a falafel and humus plate. The chicken and rice were both very dry, and the falafel was undercooked on the inside. Bother dishes generally lacked flavor. The icing on top was when the waitress completely ignored us. We wanted more pita and more drink and she never came by. I ended up just walking up to the counter to pay so we could finally leave. read more

I usually dine at Grape Leaves at least once a week. My mom and aunt were in town visiting and they wanted to experience my favorite spots. I took them to Grape Leaves. Karem (?) and Adam were sitting down eating dinner. After about 15 minutes of sitting and waiting I went and asked can they take my order. By the way I've never had to ask a restaurant are they going to take my order because that should be standard. The response from Karem was "nothing gets done until I eat" and he continued to eat really? If my mother wasn't on a walker we would have left. I didn't want her to go through the hassle. The food was still good but I will not be back for a while because I don't appreciate being treated poorly by anyone especially when I spend money in your establishment weekly. I was really hoping this was going to be a good dinner. I came here hungry as hell and ready to eat. Service was very slow to begin with. It was quite a busy night (and crowded) I'll give them that. We sat down, ordered, and waited and waited and waited. Our food finally arrived -a Shawarma sandwich, the seafood platter, and another item the waitress forgot. Overall mediocre food but the seafood platter in particular was overpriced for the size and taste. I ordered dessert with a last hope that it would fulfill the remaining emptiness in my stomach. Disappointment would await me. The plate that sat on that table was supposed to be a sort of chocolate wafer instead it was something more like paper in looks and flavor. As much as it pains me to write this review, I think it's necessary. I've been a resident in Oak Park for 15 years and Grape Leaves has always been one of my favorites. Last night we had a very dear friend visit from out of town. We asked what he might want for dinner, listing several of our locally-owned options, and he requested Mediterranean (specifically lamb shawarma). We got on Grape Leaves' website, where they offer delivery as an option, and we placed our order. When we placed the order we filled out the "specific instructions" box and told them to Buzz when they arrived, so that we could let them up (since we live in a condo building). We put the time we wanted dinner to be delivered and all seemed well. When I noticed it was about 10 minutes past the time we had asked for, I checked my phone and noticed two missed calls. I called the number back and received no answer. I called the restaurant and the owner rudely informed me that he is not responsible for the deliveries, only for "cooking and taking orders" and that I would have to contact one of the companies that they use. I tried to explain to him that I ordered off of their website and then he interrupted me and told me it is a third-party platform and he has no control over who delivers the food and they would not be able to do anything to remedy this issue. I called the missed call number back a third time and reached the driver who told me it was raining so hard she didn't want to get out of the car and she tried to call me twice but we didn't answer so she pushed us to the bottom of her list. I then called Grape Leaves back a second time to let them know I had reached the driver and that our food was now 30 minutes late and *again* I was interrupted and spoken to rudely and told they can't do anything or offer any compensation for the late meal. I now understand that Grape Leaves uses third-party delivery services when you order on their website and they were very clear that they choose to not be held responsible for any failings on those delivery services' behalf. It would be my recommendation that Grape Leaves let you know on their website that Door Dash or GrubHub are their delivery partners-and I would also make the suggestion that if a customer calls you because the food they ordered from your restaurant is 30 minutes late you let them finish their sentences and you apologize, as opposed to being defensive and continually stating that it isn't your problem and you have no control over the issue. Our driver circled back and dropped off our food 30 minutes past our scheduled time and apologized for not getting out to buzz the door. We've had bad experiences with DoorDash in the past and had I known this is a partner with Grape Leaves we would not have ordered from here. And now that I know Grape Leaves treats regular, returning customers with such disdain in the middle of an issue, sadly we won't be ordering from Grape Leaves again. read more
