MOST disappointing and odd was the hummus tasted like egg, never had this experience before and I am an average connoisseur of Mediterranean foods.

North Avenue Falafel is located on North Avenue of course, but it's way out west around Oak Park. Has more than just falafel here with lots of classic items. There's options for both meat eaters and vegetarians who will find lots of good things. Came in around lunch and got a combo. It's about $12 for a typical one. They also have a few cheaper lunch specials. Had to get the Falafel Platter. This is the place's signature item after all, so it had to be good, and it was. I came with eight pieces of falafel. Quite a lot for a platter at this price. Lots of good ass stuff on here. There was hummus, Jerusalem salad, pitas, and rice. Falafel is the main thing it seems, but there's actually plenty more. There's side items like salads and soups. Have to make a return trip over here some time and get some more of the falafel and some other items. It's the best at lunch when there's some specials. There's more than just falafel, with a few meaty choices, and lots of choices for vegans and vegetarians.

It had a base of pureed butternut squash, a different temperature than the salmon, and the roasted/salted kale underneath, also served with pickled onion. It was fine. We had a small loaf of their bread as an appetizer, served with a goat cheese and a red pepper sauce (perfect spicing), also deemed very good. The hummus plate was also good. My partner had their eggplant dish, which she said was fine, not amazing, but good. Each of us, save me, had a drink (except me, the designated driver) of alcohol or wine. Also good to very good. I had their coffee, which (an Americano) was quite good. For a side, we tried their mac & cheese, which is mac and another pasta and cheese with panko, strangely delicious. I say strangely, because it looked pretty standard but the flavorings were good, and it retained its heat. This ran about $60ea (incl wine or liquor + coffee). Oddly, after decent beignets, I looked at the tab to find that a 3% surcharge had been added. I asked, Why? It was immediately withdrawn without explanation. I would recommend viewing their menu online to see if it fits with your budget and dietary desires. There are vegetarian entrees, and meat options (including an Amish Chicken half, which was rated good) that might suit you. It's good food. It is not totally amazing or exemplary, so no five stars. Would we go back? Maybe. Watch your bill carefully.

Autre Monde set-the-bar. I've dined at most decent restaurants in Berwyn and the surrounding…read moresuburbs, and they set the bar so high that I'm primarily disappointed when dining out in the area. It got to the point where I'd either go to Autre Monde, downtown Chicago or cook at home. The duck sausage flatbread is the best on the planet. Duck sausage, truffle oil, smoked veggies, and a rock star crust make it the perfect comfort food. If I had to choose my last meal before death, this may be it! Autre Monde is about as close to Michelin-star-type cuisine as you will find in this neighborhood. The octopus is to die for and consistently cooked to perfection every time, just like their meat and fish. I've never had my food overcooked there, and it comes out exactly how I like it each time. The chefs are pros; Dan, Arty, and the crew run a tight kitchen. The staff is well-seasoned and friendly, and you won't have to wait for a drink at the bar or table. Liz, Doug, and the other bartenders are mixologists and make delicious cocktails. The food comes out ready with excellent presentations relatively quickly. They function like an orchestra, playing in the key of spices. The patio is well-put together; between the décor and landscaping, you feel as though you are at a winery. It's nestled in the backyard with walls and large fences, making for a quaint and quiet experience. The wine list and selection will please any pallet, and the well-versed wine experts on staff will aid you in selecting the right pairing with your meal. They have an enjoyable, eclectic art and movie selection that plays ongoing on a screen behind the bar, including movies like Clash of the Titans and Amazon Women on the Moon. The music is consistently good, never annoying, regardless of the year, genre, or artists they play. I challenge other restaurant owners and chefs to dine at Autre Monde in their free time so they can experience how the bar sets and raise their own. Keep rockin' over there, team! Ira
