First time at Grappa this week for our holiday party. Underwhelmed would be the best way to describe the experience. The space is chic - cool furniture, industrial modern feeling space but the food and service were meh and bathroom dirty. We were a large group but it took time to find someone who was expecting our party and could show us to our space. We had a variety of appetizers - pizzas, calamari, Cesar salad and zucchini chips? The calamari was the best of the offerings but $16!?! The pizzas were not great- overcooked and seemed to be an attempt at wood oven thin crust but tasted and liked more like a frozen product. The salad was good but overdressed and the zucchini chips were way over breaded for the amount of zucchini in the slice. We didn't seem to have a designated server who was attentive to our needs - had to ask for plates and silverware, dirty dishes sat on the tables, we had to keep asking for water - they seemed to only care about waiting on those who were buying alcohol. Our daughter chose Grappa online and we phoned ahead to see if there was a long wait Friday evening. We arrived at 6:20pm and Rebecca was our server. She was fantastic! We ordered the Fig Chill, a glass of Dreaming Tree red wine and a mocktail for our daughter. We shared an appetizer arancini, which delicious! For dinner we chose a white pizza, orecchiette bolognese and finally fettuccine carbonara with a side salad. I cannot tell you how wonderful the atmosphere, service and meals were that evening. Really nice atmosphere at Grappa, and it seems like a restaurant for all occasions. We enjoyed the calamari and arancini for appetizers- both delicious. They also bring fresh bread with dipping oil. Both entrees pictures here, we did not love (Orecchiette Bolognese & Pork Shank). They were good, but we've had better. There was a lack in flavor to the bolognese and the polenta served with the pork shank was not our favorite. Personally, we would have preferred mashed potatoes over polenta. Parking was a bit tricky since Grappa is shared with other college town businesses and the hotel. Parking garage is available right there if needed. read more

I came here for an event which was held in a beautiful conference room, right on your right when you enter the restaurant. I had a multi-course meal. The caesar salad (Very good, crispy croutons, good ratio of contents and dressing), the chicken parm with linguine (chicken was very well cooked with delicious cheese and sauce; linguine was way overcooked and had a playdough consistency), and then chocolate gelato (very good). Grappas never disappoints. My husband and I went for our 30th anniversary, along with our family. The atmosphere is always calm and inviting. The food was fantastic and our server Krista was great. We had the bolognese and the seafood linguine. They have great chicken cutlets. The food and beverage director came over to our table, Tom, and introduced himself and thanked us for having our anniversary dinner there. The executive chef, Dustin, is very creative. Had dinner at Grappa Saturday 10/14. Seated at appointed reservation time. First off our waitress Arianne was awesome; working VERY hard with too many tables. Second, we've dined at Grappa enough to feel like it's time for them to update their menu..it's been the same forever. That used to have specials which have gone away "due to staffing issues". The food: the house salad is quite the presentation however, dressing is sparse and the toasted bread crumbs they put on it in a rather large quantity was like eating sand...not a good taste. Pizza with pepperoni was good; my husbands veal parm had been sitting and was dry; the pasta underneath was sorely lacking sauce. When he requested extra sauce from the deliverer of the food, ( not our waitress!) she brought a small container out stone cold from the refrigerator; frankly Gugliemos is better. Our waitress had to take it to the kitchen to be heated. It will definitely be awhile before we return..too bad; they are close by. Gets a three for the pizza and the waitress otherwise it would be lower. read more

Visited Grappa today for lunch with co-workers and to our dismay we found the lunch menu to be significantly changed. Offered were pizzas, panini and salads. The delicious dishes offered previously during lunch are a available now for dinner only. We ordered 4 different paninis and 2 pizzas. The paninis were made with focaccia bread, which we assumed would be grilled or pressed but it wasn't. The bread was dense and nothing special. Lacked freshness and flavor. Fillings were okay but each of the 4 paninis were drippy and not easy to eat. Nothing special, in fact, they were disappointing. They were good size, however, and the sides were good (tomato soup, potato salad, chick pea salad and homemade chips). The pizzas were not good. Pre-made focaccia style crust with toppings. The crust reminded me of packaged crusts like Boboli. Not good at all. Pizzas at Grappa used to be delicious and made with fresh dough and unique toppings. Rather than being seated by a host and being served by a waitperson you now order at a counter. Few beverage selections, no bartender should you want a cocktail, no coffee or dessert offerings. No even a cookie! A very blah and disappointing lunch. The restaurant was nearly empty. Top that off with a poor selection of very mediocre food. Great place! I recommend selecting the Bartender's Choice cocktail. They ask you what types of drinks you like and match exactly for a personalized experience. The perk of this restaurant is their customization, which went beyond the drinks. We ordered the bruschetta board which allowed us to choose every element on it. We went for the artisan cheeses and prosciutto, but there were many options. Another plus is that you were able to get items made gluten free, including the calamari. Because they also have gluten-free bread, the bruschetta board actually an option for us. So many restaurants seem to have just a few items that can be customized, and it seems like a lot of work. Grappa accommodated. This is a big deal because, for some people, gluten-free is not a trend, it's essential to keeping them healthy. The atmosphere is modern and relaxing. For my starter, I had the kale salad. This was wonderfully flavorful and beautifully plated though the carrot was difficult to eat. I enjoyed the dressing and the crunch of the chickpeas. Fresh whipped cream and berries really made this a treat. Finally tried Grappa for dinner tonight on a whim. We went at 5 pm on a Sunday and it was not busy at all. The ambiance is modern but warm and cozy at the same time. Our server was friendly and professional and the perfect amount of attentive. Our dishes also came out pretty quickly, but that's not surprising given the small crowd. I ordered the spicy meatball as an appetizer and it was okay. It didn't taste spicy at all and I would have preferred more Parmesan on top. Overall it was decent, but nothing to write home about. I got the orecchiette bolognese as my entree. At first the portion didn't look very large for $18, but it was deceiving. I ate till full and still had a large amount to take home. The Parmesan was the best part and there was a lot more sprinkled on than the spicy meatball. The pasta was cooked nicely al dente and the bolognese sauce was good. I was hoping for a bit stronger flavor from the sauce--the Parmesan cheese was the sharpest note in the whole dish. This was a pretty solid pasta dish, but definitely priced higher than what I felt it was worth. I also got the Fall in a Glass (I think?) cocktail and it was fantastic. I normally don't do sweet cocktails but this one was blended perfectly and wasn't cloying the way some sweeter drinks are. I liked Grappa. The atmosphere is great for date night or any time you want to treat yourself to a more upscale meal that's still accessible. The food was good but didn't blow me away, but the service was great. I was here for happy hour and a work social a week ago. I got the 5 dollar red wine and shared a couple slices of the 10 dollar pizza. The bartender was quick in getting my drink. Both pizzas (pepperoni & white) were good but not anything to write home about. It's on the small side, close to a thin-crust style, with the topping laid all over, instead of leaving the edge bare. I'd say I prefer Nosh's pizza (fancier combo of toppings, better crust, larger size) over grappa's. It's close to where I live. I'll come back to try the apps though. Even though we sat in the bar area, the waiter refilled our water rather frequently. They also moved the tables together for us to make a bigger table. Grappa was lovely. My mom and I stayed at the hotel and had breakfast there every morning for about 4 days. The breakfast was always served hot and in a timely manner. The pancakes tasted like old school, southern pancakes. I love that they offer turkey sausage and really good coffee. My mom appreciated the flavored creamer. On 2 occasions we came close to 10am, which is when breakfast ends. However, they never rushed us nor did they appear irritated. We were waited on by a women who appeared to be a manager and a new waiter who did such an excellent job despite being new. The bar area is cute as well and they offer outdoor seating. read more

Overall a pretty good experience. Grappa has a pretty good happy hour specials specials from 4-6pm M-F where cocktails are $6, wine $5, and drafts $4. I got the citropolis which was very nice, light, and refreshing without the bad aftertaste some cocktails can give. The bartenders were very nice and attentive! They were even joking around while making my drink even though they were busy, it was a nice personal touch. The one negative I have is that it gets crowded pretty fast so chairs get taken from tables to accommodate some larger parties but then there are tables with no chairs so it was just odd standing near a table or take these disproportionately high chairs from the bar. One of my favorite happy hours in Rochester! My friends and I go all the time. They do a ten dollar delicious white pizza, 5 dollar wines, and 6 dollar delicious cocktails, along with two for 15 appetizers. I love the cosmopolitan cocktail the most! My favorite appetizer is the bruschetta for sure. It's a very nice ambience as well, and the bartenders are so nice as well. They do a late night happy hour in the warmer months after ten on Thursday and Friday. They have a fun outdoor area in the warmer months. Beautiful garden seating outside on the covered patio. Stopped by at 1pm on a rainy Saturday, the place was practically empty. Service was great. Our waitress was always around. I wonder if they've read all the reviews that say service was terrible? Maybe they're making a change. We shared the stuffed artichokes as an app. Four artichoke halves cake with stems, perfectly cooked and stuffed with a cheese mixture. The stuffing was very creamy and none of us could taste any sausage in it? It was served over a bed of arugula a balsamic drizzle. Not a bad start. For my entree I had the kale salad. It was lacinato kale, which should have been massaged prior to plating. If anyone has ever made a kale salad, the kale can be tenderized by massaging the leaves in a touch of olive oil just prior to serving. They should do that. It would make the salad more palatable. I topped it with the calamari, which was a weird combo because the salad had strawberries and candies pecans, but I wanted to try the calamari. It was ever so slightly breaded and flash fried. Delicious! I love the whole baby calamari pieces. The house salad with salmon looked amazing. The anatra pizza was delicious. Seemed super cheese because of the caramelized onions, cheese, and cauliflower. It all sorta melted together. The crispy duck was more like pulled duck, looking a bit fibrous. A lot going on in terms of flavors and we took half of it home. We opted out of dessert but the tiramisu looks good. Maybe next time. Clean bathrooms. Plenty of parking. Finally made it to Grappa about a month ago! I have to admit I was a little leery and had indifferent expectations based on a mix of reviews posted on Yelp. However Grappa far exceeded my expectations for service, food and atmosphere. We dined during Valentine's Day weekend and called ahead to secure our reservation. The bulk of the crowd seemed to all arrive and disperse around the same time. Hubby had the Valentine's Day Prefix with the Delmonico steak. I had the lasagna and we shared calamari. Our appetizers and entrees were phenomenal. Hubby enjoyed the risotto immensely. My only complaint was a shortage on every beer or cider selection that my husband ordered. After choosing two separate beers they didn't have in stock, they finally found the third. Our server was great. Management was also friendly. The restaurant is beautiful with two full walls of windows facing outdoors and one facing the classy hotel lobby. There's a full deck attached for the highly appreciated warm summer days. Upon entering, it seems very clean an inviting, with neatly organized communal bar tables and a long bar separating the main dining room from the bar area. It has great light, is simplistic and spacious, which makes it very comfortable. I ordered a happy hour cocktail, Swirlaway, with Vodka, Blood Orange, and Grapefruit Fizz soda. My mother and brother's wife ordered the Violet Cocktail which is a beautiful gradient purple that comes in a martini glass with blueberries for garnish. My father had to get the Grappa flight for giggles. It's really not my thing but it's old school Italian... and we had to get some Grappa at Grappa! For starters, we ordered the Buffolata Fritti, it's fried imported buffalo mozzarella with a crema di porcini (creamy mushroom sauce). Although very strong on the mushroom flavor, you can still taste the mozz through the sauce, which is nice. Five come in an order. We also got the fried calamari which was enough to please all five of us, that's why it's $16. I also ordered the beet salad, and it's huge! Definitely enough for 2 people to share as an app. It comes with three different fresh beets and a big ball of goat cheese. So good! For dinner, I got the Seared Diver Scallops because they're my fav. It comes on a bed of Polenta with Roasted Garlic, Asparagus tips, and Micro Greens with a Lemon and Sage olive oil. They were cooked well and had a nice texture and color on the outside. Very tasty! We also got the Grilled Eggplant Involtino, Carbonara, Linguini and Clams, and the Veal Parm. All were cooked very well and were large portions. We we're stuffed but miraculously made room for dessert! I highly recommend the Apple Crisp Crostada which is a large pastry full of baked cinnamon apples and covered in Vanilla Ice Cream and Caramel. Mmm-mm. For the quality and portion size, this place is definitely worth checking out. And they have great Happy Hour specials - $5 glasses of wine, $6 craft cocktails, and $10 pizzas! read more

This spot definitely lives up to it's name Grappa, the vibe is so relaxing and refreshing. I feel in love with the patio and the huge bar that they had along with a open kitchen concept. Enjoyed the Veal Parm and I cannot remember the name of the other dish, but they were delicious. First time having fresh pasta, so the noodles were a little under cooked but the sauce made up for it. Grappa has been on my "to visit" list for awhile, especially considering how much I adore its sister restaurant, the Erie Grill. Unfortunately, Grappa doesn't measure up to the Erie Grill. The decor/ambience is nice enough, and I enjoyed the mix of music (they were playing Earth, Wind and Fire when we walked in), but the presentation of dishes and quality of the food itself could use some additional attention. The libations were enjoyable enough though (I kept it simple, ordering the "Show Pony" with Maker's Mark, Lemoncello, and muddled berries). We ordered a variety of dishes and the food started out appealing enough, The truffle mac and cheese, for example, was an especially tasty way to start the dinner. Alternatively, my friend ordered the spicy clams appetizer and found it to be enjoyable. We opted to split an autumn salad... but this is where the meal started to slip for me. The salad came with bland dressing, improperly mixed greens to dressing, and looking sloppily thrown on the dish. The poached pears were also fairly tasteless. I know it was a simple salad, but I was less than impressed. For our main entrees, we order the cioppino and manicotti. While my friend generally enjoyed the manicotti, I was disappointed in my cioppino... especially the overly cooked scallops (which, at least on one side, seemed nearly burnt). Also, cioppino should be at least somewhat stew-like, but the lemon-garlic white wine sauce that I expected to find in my dish was nowhere to be found. It didn't seem to have been absorbed by the pasta, as there was no burst of flavor from the pasta itself. The entire entree turned, again, to be somewhat bland and tasteless. From my experience, I'd say Grappa is more of a place that could offer an enjoyable Happy Hour or appetizing pizza options... but it misses the mark when it comes to flavorful, and well presented, dinner options. TL;DR Given so many other options in Rochester, I don't anticipate making a point to get back to Grappa... and especially not for the cost. read more

We had dinner at Grappa last night. Because of the beautiful weather and feeling cooped up we chose to sit outside on their patio. Outside was definitely more crowded than inside. Tables are well spaced, servers are obviously masked and in addition there are outdoor heaters well placed. We ordered one of their signature cocktails first... really good but too small for the price. Dinner started with the beet salad ($13 for the large that we shared). I ordered the chicken cutlet ($20) which does not disappoint and my friend ordered the stuffed eggplant ($28) which was good but for the cost, kind of on the smaller size. No dessert. read more

Grappa has cool vibes the minute you walk in, the lights are dimmed and there's a cozy heir about the bar, plus a plethora of drink options to choose from. AND THE BAR TENDER CJ WAS SO AWESOME - he was personable and put up with my indecisiveness with a smile on his face and patience. I wanted a cocktail, but there weren't a lot of labels on the spirits/bitters so we went the wine route, and again, I wasn't sure. He poured me three mini tastings of his top choices to help me pick - and the moscato was a winner (I like sweet okay?) I felt so fancy with my large glass! I also enjoyed a non alcoholic drink, with lemon, lavender, and fresh blueberry - I love when places have a cool mocktail! We didn't get dinner, but the food smelled AMAZING and the dishes looked plated to perfection, from what we could see. Wow! What a great first impression. We went on a Sunday at 5 p.m. And the best part about that place is that they have happy hour every day of the week! Although it is only 4 to 6 they have basically buy one get one free, beer,food, cocktails, I have yet to see a better happy hour. Although I get out of work at 5 o'clock during the week it would be nice if most happy hours went to 7, I don't like to feel rushed. We tried Grappa for the first time, and if you don't know what it is you need to try it at least once. We will probably never order it again but you need to do it at least once, the alcohol is very strong. I had the sangria and I am a sangria snob, but the sangria tasted like it had alcohol in it and I loved it. I'm used to getting sangria that tastes like fruit juice and is overly priced. The food was delicious, the drinks were delicious and we had two the best bartenders ever. Elizabeth, who I found out was a manager later, took awesome care of us and explained everything. Jessica took over and was just as great! The building is beautiful and has a great set up for outside seating, once again we took advantage of the beautiful weather Rochester has to offer. I am rarely in this area so I was looking forward to try Grappa during restaurant week. New to the college town area, I was so glad to find that there was off-street parking. Easy to find following Yelp's directions. I like the indoor decor and outdoor patio. I get an open, clean-cut vibe from the contemporary decor. We were greeted by servers who were walking either in or out to their guests seated on the patio, which is next to the entrance. I immediately noticed the bustling service traffic going through the doors and couldn't help but watch throughout my entire indoor dining experience. Are the servers getting paid enough to battle the doors for outdoor service? Talk about needing helping hands by your side. Hands full, prying open not only one, but two doors with pinkies, toes, elbows to get in/out AND they stop to hold the door mid-way for guests. Where is the host? Doorman? Extra kudos to the servers for working as a team to do three jobs. On that note, our server was accommodating and friendly, but a little slow. To her defense, she was also serving the private party room as well. The dishes were brought out by different servers. My three course meal included the truffle mac and cheese appetizer, orecchiette bolognese, and the ricotta stuffed cannoli. I'm biased to mac and cheese because I follow an amazing Food Network recipe so it was just okay to me. I couldn't distinguish the different meats - pork, veal, and beef in the bolognese, but the flavor was good. We asked for black and red pepper and I was surprised to get a black pepper shaker. It's an Italian restaurant - where is the fresh pepper grinder. Oh yes, I see that you're using it in the private party room. The flavor that stuck out for me wasn't even my dish. I tried my friend's tomato chutney that was on top of the grilled salmon and it was delicious. I can imagine that must have been delicious with the salmon and risotto, but I didn't taste everything. I also brought my lil' 8 month old babycakes with me. Initially I was worried if it was baby-friendly, but they are equipped with highchairs (with trays!) and a changing table. Came here on Valentine's Day with reservations made on the Yelp site a week in advance. it was pretty crowded for good reason, but it was not loud at all which was surprising. great service, quick as well, i was surprised we got our food as quick as we did. Had the pearl of wisdom drink: amazing! bread before the meal was warm and soft with awesome Italian seasoning to dip. we also got 2 Free cannoli for the holiday which was a nice surprise. i got the Spiced clams and they were amazing after being skeptical. i was worried about the flavor and if it was going to be too spicy. it was listed as a small plate which was enough for me for dinner with around about 10 clams? maybe more? can't wait to return here in the summer to sit by the fire pit again read more

Grappa - Spicy clams - Italian Near Me - Rochester, New York

My first visit to Grappa was a great experience! I came with a somewhat large group. Despite the fact that we had reservations, we still had to wait. But the upside is that as a part of the hotel, there is plenty of room to wait with your group. The food was excellent - from the calamari to the salad to the main entrees, I was impressed. I went with Linguini and Clams in the traditional white sauce, and it was delicious. Probably the best L&C that I've had since I lived at home and my dad made it as part of our regular dinner lineup. Brought back memories. I'll admit that the place is a little pricey, but I think you're getting your money's worth. I think I had 10 large in-shell clams with a significant portion of pasta. The seafood dishes are a little more expensive in comparison to some of the others. Drinks were tasty. I indulged a little. Take a chance on "steady as she rose." It was simply delicious with the right mix of sweet and tart. Maybe it was a little too like candy...but that's kind of my thing. Location in College-town is nice. A definite benefit for hotel patrons I would say. And it's nice that there is plenty of off-street parking in the lot. It makes it much easier especially with winter snows. Despite this place being open for a few years I never had made it over here - perhaps that is because there are so many local Italian places in Rochester. We stopped in on a quiet early Sunday evening. Our server was very friendly and helpful. We started with a couple glasses of wine and some of their very tasty bread. For our mains we ordered some appetizers since we were not super hungry. The beans and greens were very good but it could have used a bit more garlic (for some that might be too much). The lobster mac & cheese had some big pieces of lobster claw meat which was a pleasant surprise - this dish was also very good. We had the worse service tonight. I have been at this location last year - the food and service was good. Today it was pathetic. We waited 45 minutes for our entrees. When the food arrived it was cold. Our server messed up our order and left out an appetizer. He didn't check in and failed to apologize for the inexcusable delay. #failure read more

We have been to Grappa three times over the last year. The first two times we were very happy with our choice. Last night's visit wiped out any good feelings we had in the past. We made reservations for 4 people a week in advance, Upon arrival (on time) we were told that we would be the next table seated. We then waited 45 minutes to be seated at a table suited for 2 people (we were a party of 4). Within five minutes of being seated at the tiny table, the 6 top next to ours emptied and we were not offered to move. It remained empty until we left. During our 45 minute wait we were not offered drinks or an appetizer. Once seated, we waited 15 minutes to catch somebody's eye and ask that they send a server. When she came over she told us that she had been serving a table of 18 people and couldn't break away to take our order. We asked for the manager and when he finally came he didn't apologize, he just said they screwed up and that basically we could lump it. The food was uninspired, not bad, but certainly not up to the standard set previously. Ultimately, they comped us for our first round of drinks but because the manager did not tell us that he was going to do that, we didn't even have the satisfaction of knowing that they acknowledged their screwups.
