Ron and his brother Dave have well over 70 years combined experience installing and refinishing hardwood floors. They are definitely from the old school of doing things, which is one of the reasons I decided to have Grateful Floors redo our hard woods, because they don't cut corners! They are also about one of the only floor refinishers, in our area, that don't push the water based coatings like every other contractor, and instead prefer to use the original Swedish floor finishing products since they are more durable and outlast anything else on the market today. However, they also will use water based coatings when requested. Swedish floor finishing is more time consuming, labor intensive, and requires a three day process to apply, but the results are absolutely worth it if you don't want to redo your hardwoods every five years or less. Anytime you have your floors refinished it's a major inconvenience, but Dave and Ron were very careful to properly prepare our home for the refinishing process, including masking off areas of the house for dust and informing us of each step of the process as well as what time they would show up for work etc. They were always prompt, and true to their work with a high degree of attention to detail. I would highly recommend Grateful Floors to anyone looking to have their floors refinished both for the finished product as well as their costs which was very reasonable as well. read more

Ron came highly recommended from a friend after we moved into a 30 year old house in dire need of a face lift. The hardwood floors were in excellent condition, but the blonde stained red oak wood was simply outdated and would not match the rest of the renovations. Ron went above and beyond to work with us on the color. We thought we wanted a dark walnut, but once we saw the sample on the floor, we wanted it a bit darker. He mixed in a subtle amount of black and viola! It was PERFECT. We wouldn't be happier with the finished product, which is a result of Ron's craftsmanship and attention to detail. On top of everything else, he returned one week later to install a random piece of trim that he tracked down on his own. Ron's work is second to none, and he's a nice guy to boot. Every one of my Yelp reviews thus far has been positive, as I prefer to reward (rather than bash) good small businesses. With Grateful Floors that has now changed. Based on Yelp reviews and a very clearly written email indicating EXACTLY what services were needed I chose Grateful Floors to do work in my sister's home. Ron's workmanship was adequate, however the collateral damage that came along with it was quite another story. Here are the low-points: Customer Service & Workmanship -- As mentioned previously his work was generally adequate; but for a person who considers himself a craftsman it was surprising to find that he failed to miter the corners of the trim in all of the rooms. He also showed a lack of collaboration as he became angry when simply asked what would be the visual difference between water-based vs. oil-based finishes. And that temper is the next point. Quick Temper -- Ron is on a hair trigger. He was very quick to go on the offensive even with non-threatening questions asked in a mild manner. He seemed to immediately assume that whatever question a person had they were attempting to blame him -- so out came the claws. Failure to Follow Through -- I clearly mentioned that furniture would need to be moved before the floors could be completed. In writing I told him specifically what needed to be done so there would be no confusion. He agreed to have someone available to help him move items. However once at the location his anger flared and he began to insist that a mover should have been called. He did attempt to move a few items but damaged at least one, at which time the process was halted and movers were called. Damage -- Besides marring one piece of furniture, Ron left behind an assortment of other damaged items including: damaged drywall (two rooms and a closet); forced windows off their tracks; disassembled electrical joint box THEN rewired so that some switches now work in reverse! Ron refused to offer any sort of reimbursement for the damage and of course, became angry when asked about it. Ron's general thinking was 'it's no big deal' or 'maybe the damage was present before I arrived.' I'm not sure why the experience was so much different than other Yelp comments but unless you want to deal with a constantly confrontational stance, unfinished work and a damaged interior I would steer clear of Ron. He readily admitted that he has a quick temper so don't expect that to disappear either. Now I could go on, but I won't. Without hesitation I do NOT recommend nor would ever use Grateful Floors again. read more

I just bought my first home and the original red oak floors were badly stained, scuffed and heavily scratched. The transformation was nothing short of amazing. The floors look new. (They are over 60 years old!) The refinishing really brought out the beautiful color and grain of the red oak. The floors are smooth to the touch. The rooms were transformed by the refinishing. I originally got three bids from refinishers. Two quoted over $1800 before any repairs that might be needed. Ron was the only one who actually came out to look at the floors to give a good estimated bid. He was friendly and knowledgeable, he is a craftsman and his attention to detail is outstanding. I had one board in front of a door that had been badly damaged, he came up with a solution that blended in perfectly with the old floor boards. I recently sold my house and needed a small patch to a damaged part of my hardwood floor. It is truly hard to describe the transformation of our 20 year old hardwood floors. Ron did an absolutely amazing job transforming one room from carpet to hardwood. He laced the new hardwood from that room into the existing 20 year old floor with absolute perfection. Ron is a true craftsman and professional. Ron and Jon were life savers. My buyers just backed out from buying my house right in the middle of a move to Chicago. So since my house was empty for the next round on the market, everyone was going to see the stained and neglected hardwood floors that my oriental rugs were covering. I called Ron based on Yelp reviews on the Friday after my buyers backed out. He was at the house that day for an estimate and lucky for me his client for the following week backed out so he got me in right away. I took Monday and Tuesday off to paint while Ron and Jon were there working. I was in such a bad mood because of the whole situation and they definitely brought a smile to my face. They were not only hard workers taking pride in their work but they were fun to chat with throughout the day. We bonded over of 70s, 80s and 90s music.. For some pet stains on the floor that were not able to be sanded out, instead of charging me extra to replace with reclaimed wood, they had the ingenuity to take out the problem boards and flip them over and the problem was instantly solved. Because I have a shabby chic style, beat up floors never bothered me but now I'm sold on newly refinished hardwoods and that will be the first thing I do in my new Chicago house. I highly recommend Ron & Jon! They do great work. Also word of warning, the oil based sealant is very smelly and the smell lingers for a while despite my repeated attempts to air out the house. I had just recently moved to Seattle and the floors in my new home were in horrible shape. They were terribly worn and had burn marks in several places from the previous owner, who was a heavy cigar smoker. I needed to get the floors refinished before the movers brought all of my stuff up. I called Ron on a Saturday and left a message. He not only returned my call, but came out to do an estimate that same day. His estimate was in line with 2 others I'd received, but what clinched it for me was when he said they could start on Monday. It was at least a week or more before the other 2 companies would start. They did an excellent job, the floors look like new and the burn marks were completely erased. They also came in below the estimated cost when it was all done. Last summer I had a relatively small job refinishing the fir floor in a large closet, and also wanted the threshold replaced. Ron came out and did an amazing job on the closet floor, and instead of replacing the threshold, he removed it and did a great job matching the finish with the floor outside the closet. I was impressed with the work and when Ron suggested doing something similar to thresholds in other rooms I went for it. In two of them he had to replace the wood underneath and again did a great job matching the finish. I would have never thought of removing the thresholds and now it looks fantastic. Ron and Jon did our hardwood floor refinish. I must say, it looks better than when we bought the house new. We had been told by the original builder the floors had a Swedish finish. So the wife and I decided we would have the floors refinished with a Swedish finish. Ron showed up on time for an estimate when he said he would. Gave a great estimate and discussed the pro's and con's of various finishes. Of course, the main downside of the hard Swedish finish is the odor as the floor cures. So you cannot be in residence for 24 hours after the finish coat. Went well. They even refinished the oak floor tread on the outside of the garage door. There had been some dings and scratches collected in the 18 years we've lived in the house. Ron and Jon made them all disappear. The finished floor was perfect. Their attention to detail is fantastic and their eye for correcting blemishes are peerless. I wholeheartedly recommend them for floor work. You can't get any better than Ron! I have dealt with contractors on several house projects, and always the results come up short - in more ways than one. He gave us a very, very reasonable estimate and stuck by it - I got other estimates and no one even came close. He had to remove over 3 layers of lenoleum (one layer that seemed to be over 50-60 years old and probably some asbestos based product). We knew there were a few layers but anticipating the work required to remove all this and the state of the underlying floors would have been difficult for anybody.
