First, the good: Overall, the floors look great. And they did a decent job reattaching and re-caulking the baseboards, although they did get a little scuffed and needed touch-up paint, which I believe is typical whenever you remove and reattach baseboards. However, in a few spots there are sanding swirl marks visible in certain light. Also, in some places, there are "ripples" visible across the floor, again in the right light. One day the workers locked the key in the house so I had to drive out to let them in. It was then that I noticed they had jugs of Bona Mega (matte) ready to go on the floor, when the contract called for (the more expensive) Bona Traffic HD (satin). I called Mac and he said the first coat would be Bona Mega and the next two coats would be Bona Traffic HD. A few minutes later he called back and said the workers had Traffic HD in the van and would use it for all three coats. The workers put two small dents in my stair handrail. The painted stair risers also got a lot of stain on them. I realize stain bleeds under masking tape and it's impossible to get it perfect with just masking tape, but with some care the result could have been much better. They did not even mask the center of the risers, just the edges, so predictably some drops of stain got on the center of the risers, which was entirely preventable. read more

Mac and his crew refinished 440 s.f of my hardwood floors that included the kitchen, dining room and guest bathroom. The floors had been untouched for 25 years and looked awful with wear spots, dents and scratches. Plus, there were small gaps between the new kitchen cabinets and the end of the original floor. I'm not a floor professional nor am I a carpenter, which is why I hired Mac to refinish my hardwood floors and install new hardwood floors in the kitchen. The latter project, however, unfortunately did not happen due to Mac's extremely poor communication skills. Here's what happened: - Mac came out to give an estimate. I told him we wanted hardwood in the kitchen and for it to be level with the adjacent living room (currently the vinyl flooring is about ¼ inch higher than the wood flooring in the living room). - I told Mac I wanted to refinish the floors to match the existing floor color as closely as possible. We agreed on an amber finish. - Mac sent an extremely vague estimate (see photo) - A reasonable assumption was made that "installing new hardwood in the kitchen" included removing the existing vinyl flooring because I explicitly said I wanted the floors to be flush, so I expected an estimate that would reflect this request. - We agreed to move forward, and he insisted that we move out of our place for the finish to match and be seamless. So, we rented storage pods, hired movers, and rented an AirBnB. The morning the work was supposed to begin, Mac called me to confirm that I wanted to install the hardwood OVER the vinyl in the kitchen. I told him that this is not what we agreed on and that would make the kitchen 1/2 inch higher than the living room, which would be absurd. His crew must have realized how absurd that would be that morning, which is why he called me. Mac proceeded to tell me that I didn't ask him to remove the old floor (I did and I wrote this in the notes I was taking during the estimate), and that I should have known it wasn't included in his vague estimate. He also stated that removing the vinyl would require asbestos testing which takes several days to get back from the lab, thus prolonging the project. Mac then blamed me for not telling him that that we would also need plywood to make the floors flush. As previously mentioned, I am not a carpenter, so I was relying on a professional to determine the necessary steps required to meet my request of having the floors flush. Furthermore, it turns out he was planning on using a clear finish rather than the amber finish we had agreed on, which we discovered at the very last minute thankfully. Mac refused to take any blame for these miscommunications and did not apologize once for the mishaps. Now on to the work itself. The stairs look like someone dragged a dead body down them. I'm shocked that any legitimate company would consider this to be quality work. I'm starting to think that these other reviews are bots... Again, zero communication about this, and when confronted, his response was that we "should have known" that this could happen because the treads are Fir. Had we known this could be the outcome, we would have opted for a darker stain color, but this was our fault I guess because this is apparently common knowledge that everyone possesses except us. The main floors came out great except for an old water stain that didn't sand out. I would have liked the option to replace those floorboards, but there was no communication about options for that defect either. Unless you are a carpenter or a contractor who has a solid understanding of all things wood and can make informed decisions without the help of a professional, I highly recommend you stay away from this company. read more

There is a reason Mac and his team have such amazing reviews, they were truly a delight to work with and our floors look AMAZING!!!!! We had existing red oak flooring that needed to be matched with our new red oak. The areas they patched in the new flooring with the old are seamless, there were a few tricky spots, and even those look near perfect. The baseboards were removed without any scrapes in our paint, and put back on looking like they had never been removed. After having our entire bottom floor covered in a plume of sawdust the cleanup they did as well was great. Mac personally went above and beyond to help us with the specific stain, and finish as well by coming to our house during rush hour traffic to help us make sure we got everything just right! They repaired some spots where my husband tore up some decorative posts, it looks like they were never even there. We were very happy with the finished product. I loved that they put down sample stain to help us choose the right color. We did a water finish so it was less toxic/smelly than Swedish finish and we're so happy we did because we didn't have to leave the house. We did run air filters and fans - it was a little strong when the first coat went on but after that it wasn't noticeable. Update 8/25/2020 Bumping up half a star. Mac came back out. He fixed 2 of the vents that were stuck so I could put on the dampeners. He also filled in some of the holes with wood putty oil and gave me 2 small jars for other holes to fill as I find them. He said there is nothing he can do about the swirl marks now that the floor is sealed. Same with the wood filler that didn't take any stain. It's not great to hear since the swirl marks are throughout the house. I feel another person would have pushed for some sort of resolution (fix or some partial refund), but we are at a point where we would like to simply enjoy our house and move on. Original Review The review is actually 3.5 stars but there are no halves. Mac is a nice guy and I like to see a family owned business. He sanded and stained 1300 sq ft of floors and changed 12 carpeted steps to wood. He also changed 7 of our vents to flush mount vents and added a transition piece in our laundry room. I didn't realize how much work went into all of this and the crew definitely works hard. Pros Overall, I think the floors look way better than before. Mac also removed baseboard trim under our kitchen cabinets and added 2 small oak boards under my dishwasher that were missing after I asked if he could. They covered everything and I can tell they were trying to be careful, for the most part. Little things happen, but with how much work was going on I would think it's impossible for everything to be perfect. Cons There wasn't a lot of communication when Mac and his crew were coming or going. I learned I needed to be proactive on asking about schedule. Some areas could use touch up on the stain since it never took. Some holes could have been filled where Mac said if he filled them now would just go back to infilled. I think the bigger thing that bothered me is a lot of the swirl marks that are pretty visible standing height. They end up looking like scratches in the floor which isn't great since they were just redone. Mac said it's expected to have swirl marks. I really don't buy this to be honest. Nothing can be perfect but for the price I paid, I feel like I would probably just have put all new floors if that was really the case. Mac said he would come out to fix some of the unstained areas. I haven't heard from him yet so I'll check in. I told him I can show him the swirl marks in person and see what he can do. read more
