I wish Missoula didn't have weird beer rules because I'd do the entire lineup here on a long afternoon if I could! There isn't a single bad beer on the list and the food is killer--making the pretzels with lye?! Like I do in my own kitchen and like I grew up on?! I'm sold. The patio space is wonderful for hanging with your family and playing card games which is what we did. It even got pretty busy and Kimber was cranking out pints and carrying food to tables like a duck on water! She was the heckin' best. I love coming to Bayern! read more

Years ago I had a friend bring me some of their beers in cans to try and I've been wanting ever since that day to visit the brewery.. well today was that day. It's a good size spot with seating both indoors and outdoors. There's a large chess game on the patio. They also serve traditional German style food but we had just eaten.. the menu did look good; definitely next time. It's a great spot putting out traditional German style brews and German brews with a twist. We ordered up a flight to try some of these different styles and everything was great. I recently got to try beer from Bayern Brewing from Missoula, Montana. Missoula is a college town and perhaps not coincidentally a big brewery city for the state. There is a number of craft breweries in this city all with their own distinctive styles. At Bayern Brewing I was fortunate to try their Dopplebock which I enjoyed very much. Having the characteristics of a dark lager yet the rough bite of a porter or a stout this malty, dark and smooth beer is excellent as we are nearing the end of the cold months of the year. We've been here twice now. While the food is good our recent visit was not. We ordered the Wiener schnitzel for lunch. When the waiter dropped it off he brought plastic forks and told us the dishwasher was not working so they had no reusable utensils. Okay, fine. Could we have a plastic knife, please? "We just have forks"' he says and walks away. There a a few problems with this. First off, it is not possible to eat Wiener schnitzel with a plastic fork. Check out the pic! You can't cut that with a plastic fork! Second, he knew they were out of regular utensils and had no knives, why didn't he mention this when we were ordering? Third, waiter was very rude and unconcerned. He just walked away. Really! How in the heck are we supposed to eat this?? Luckily, since we do a bit of traveling, I had spare set of utensils in the car. We shared a plastic knife to eat the meal. The waiter never checked back. What a wonderful place! The restaurant is called Edelweiss Bistro and is part of the brewery which is on a side street of Missoula. Plenty of parking on the street. It's beautiful inside with friendly staff and a casual atmosphere. The German food was just like Grandma made and so tasty! You have to look for this place but it's worth it!! read more

Absolutely excellent food, kind and attentive staff (working so hard- seriously these folks are a dream team). Everything here is clean and well organized, we have already recommended it to several people. The food was so good, we forgot to take pics- the German potato salad was incredible, the spaetzel (sp?) and snitzel (sp?) were so delicious. Hubby had the brat and sauerkraut and it was amazing. Definitely check this place out and try everything, best German food since I was in Munich. No lie!! I want to live here. I'm not even kidding. I was just visiting in town for a couple days. Searching breweries, a whole pile showed up! This was actually the second one we had visited this day (no judging me!). I really wish it had been our first! We only made it to the downstairs pub area, which was just awesome. Quality service and we started with a pretzel and a sampler of 10 beers. We read and talked about the ways that the different beers were made and how the met German quality standards. They were absolutely excellent. I don't think there was one I didn't like (I don't like IPAs and they don't brew them, so that worked out great!). We didn't get to sample much of the food, but the pretzel was great with the beer sampler. If you're in the area and like beer, you should stop by this place! read more

I would say the "many vegetarian options" is misleading. That being said, it is about as good of German food as you will find in Missoula, with excellent beer, knowledgeable staff, and fantastic customer service. By far the best brewery in the USA. I was stationed for over 3 years in Germany in the Army. Love real German beer. This is the ONLY beer in the US that tastes distinctly German. It is the real deal! The brewer is my hero - thank you Sir for bringing real German beer to the USA!!! My favorite beers: 1) The old Bavarian style St. Walter Hefeweizen - he got that wonderful hefe taste I have craved for so long. 2) The green label Pilsner. We've been going here for years, and it's always our favorite date night! My partner gets the jaeger schnitzel because it's just so good! Pick any item off the menu and you won't go wrong. (The fries are also top-notch!) The staff is very kind, but I want to give a huge shoutout to our waitress, Kelli, who is always the sweetest. She's super attentive, incredibly positive, and always lights up the room! Thank you, Kelli - we love your bubbly personality! Bayern has handled itself well during the pandemic, and we really appreciate the efforts to socially distance and sanitize the tables. WORST "German" food ever!!! Went upstairs to the Edelweiss Bistro for what we thought would be a nice family dinner...NOT!!! We were the only people there and service SUCKED!! We all (5 of us) ordered schnitzel and was surprised to see that the Jagerschnitzel was NOT breaded!! The pale slab of meat topped with drab colored gravy looked like vomit! I ordered spatzle as a side and was brought the kasespatzle! I brought it to the waitresses attention... NO apology... just an attitude that made us all very uncomfortable. There wasn't enough gravy to cover the serving so I asked for a little more and was told they were all out. The German potato salad looked like a wet mess of mashed potatoes!! Gurkensalat was bland. Hands down my favorite brewery in Missoula (and Montana too). Bayern crushes the local competition for great beer and produces some of the best bavarian beers I've tasted in the US. This place was ok, it seemed like it might be cool for regulars that know the ins and outs. We stopped here after a long day of travel and were very hungry. We found out that the kitchen is closed on sundays. The bar was full of kids.
