I cheated on him for a while at another salon that I shall not name, but I'm back now. He fixed the other salon's mishap and I haven't looked back. He's cut my hair, bleached my hair, and toned my hair to my heart's desires and I will never leave my hair to another ever again. Brian's is an artist. He always listens to what I want and we discuss the results that I want. He knows me well, so if ask for something out of the ordinary, he makes sure that I understand what I'm asking for. A different kind of war By Enuma Chigbo…read more Indeed, I sit here typing away in my living room, feeling much lighter than I was before I left home this morning. I had a huge load on my head and was determined to dump it at all costs. My major 'accessory' to this 'dumping ground' is the Royal Clip Salon, on Pleasant Hill, Duluth Georgia. Funny a few days before this day, the Lord, who has a way of placing snippets here and there, paints a little picture in my mind. I teach Sunday School in my church, Full Truth Church of God and last week, I was directed to title the teaching for that day, "Crowning Glory." Perhaps this was His way of letting me know that this interesting load, which was trying to make my head its permanent resting place would finally be exterminated. The load in question was a weave I had sown into my hair sometime in December 2019. "How long have you had this?" Jessica my attendant asks me as she wades through this rather intriguing labyrinth. I refuse to answer, shame being the sole reason. I had met Jessica a while back. I met her for the same reason. She took out my weave and quite effortlessly too. But second time around, I was unsure of the same results for the simple reason that to the best of my understanding no one and I mean no one leaves weaves in their hair for that long. I walked into the Royal Clip Salon wondering if I would walk out with any hair at all. "I just couldn't afford to come," I say to her quite sheepishly. It wasn't just the very reasonable fee Jessica charged me, but transporting myself from my new location Cumming and back would cost an additional fortune. But, the funds came miraculously and for this reason, I find myself on Jessica's seat. Walking around the plaza, I find it hard to believe I once lived in this environment. Yes indeed, I did and two years later coming back to familiar terrain, I would feel like the perfect stranger. Anyway I put away this thought for a while even as I start putting sequences together - Crowning Glory- Royal Clip. In these sequences lie an untold story and it is indeed my duty to tell it. In this place, where I would spent at least four hours of my Saturday, there was time to do a bit of observation. The place is squeaky clean. I particularly like the stain free dark brown wooden floors, a nice contrast to white walls and black leather swivel chairs. Some of the swivel chairs are white and my guess is that the white chairs are strictly for those who come in for a haircut. As for me, I would have a good time on my black swivel chair. There is another chair that sits much taller than the rest. It's a taupe leather chair where you can get a nice regal pedicure. "Do you mind if other people help out with your hair?" Jessica asks me. Actually, she did not ask that Saturday. She asked this question the day before when she called me to reconfirm my appointment slated for that wonderful Saturday. Of course my response was in the affirmative but behind that response was a cheeky grin and silent thought on my part. "If this lady had x-ray lenses she would not be asking me that question! Anyway, Jessica embarks on the arduous task and the conversations begin. I would learn that she is Vietnamese and has lived in the United States for about 15 years, which makes me more like a newcomer. In my home country Nigeria, the nickname given in this regard in JJC, which means Johnny Just Come and please don't ask where this came from! For the very first time, I am excited about taking selfies. Before and after pictures of this 'historic' event would definitely be apt. Two ladies come in and join Jessica and somehow the picture in my mind as per the 'before' state changes from that of a labyrinth to a farm, maybe in my home country Nigeria. Perhaps the unprecedented dirt adorning the salon's black cape provided to protect my clothes may have had a whole lot to do with this. Looking at the thickness of this beach sand like dirt all did remind me of that and then my thoughts deepened even further, I began to imagine the harvesting the yam tuber, a staple crop in that part of the world. It carries a whole lot of the dirt from the ground in which it's harvested. In total shame I watched and then from the corner of my eye I watched the facial expressions of the ladies, looking for signs that betrayed contempt or disgust but I found none. For some reason, they seemed more interested in getting the job done. Somehow my eyes were drawn to the writing on the painting hanging pretty on the salon walls. The words promote silence and denounce idle chatter. In about two hours, my hair is free from all entanglements. I look at the floor and see what came out, which to my mind is enough for the full head of hair of another. To think some Asian women make tons of money this way... Jessica asks me virtually all the time if I am doing okay and that gesture makes me feel well at home. To be continued.

While my hair came out ok, the experience wasn't pleasant. I remembered mostly being in pain and listening to strange conversations from the dressers discussing about financial issues/litigation, etc. for professionalism, I don't think discussing about financial legal issues is the best thing to do. Also watching one of the dressers come in and then go straight to a booth and start buzzing his own hair was also odd. I was here for a haircut and highlights without an appointment. I am grateful they managed to squeeze me in. The whole appointment was about 3 hours long. I don't recall my previous balayages/highlights being this uncomfortable. The technique here, which makes sense is sectioning hair and teasing it and then applying the chemical. The teasing part was rough and I kept thinking how were they going to remove a whole head of tangled hair later? Sure enough, as they were combing the hair out, applying a lot of conditioner, I questioned if there was a less barbaric way to do this. By far the star of this place is a stylist named Jessica. IT sounds like my dresser complained that Jessica doesn't show up in time and offered me a spot with her instead of Jessica. I wasn't super picky about The outcome and was pressed on time, so I said yes. I am pretty sure I lost quite a bit of hair from the detangling process as my ponytails have been very thin afterwards. Will likely go back to something on Pleasant Hill. Saving the money was nice at first but you get what you paid for.

WORST HAIRCUT EVER…read more Cindy cut my hair way too short. I asked for 2 inches, at most 2.5 inches off. I walked out with 4 inches off my length and I cried in my car after leaving. I wore my glasses today so I had to take them off during my haircut so I was unable to see but how did TWO INCHES turn to FOUR?!? My long hair that was close to my bottom is now up above mid back. I kept emphasizing I want to keep my hair LONG. Be firm on your boundaries and what you want. I usually get my haircut once a year and now this makes me never want to even cut my hair ever again. How hard is it to just listen to what the client want?! I haven't had hair this short since grade school. I've never felt so ugly and I hated that I had to pretend this was ok. I was just really curious on what happens. It wound up taking ~4 hours where I got my hair washed, cut, primed, bathed in solvent, and then curled with the little rollers. I definitely felt cared for, but 4 hours is def a long time. I brought a book and phone charger in case I was bored. The salon inside, however, is extremely cold. I think it was like 62 degrees inside, and I got my perm done in the summer when it was hot (and I still felt that it was freezing). There's a bunch of stylists inside and people who help prepare the clients. For a digital perm, it was ~$200, and if you pay with cash, you can avoid the 3% credit card fee. They also do a traditional booking system where you call them and you get written down for an appointment on a paper book. Overall, I loved how my hair turned out. It was very luscious and soft, but I wish when I made the appointment, maybe there could have been guidelines of what not to do leading up to the appointment, same with post hair care especially for new timers. I wound up using a notes app of how to care for it. I wish I had more curls in my hair, but now I know for next time and how to ask for it to be styled. Great experience generally! This place is located inside of a busy plaza with lots to do, so if you're ever waiting on someone here, you can go to Teso or get boba/food/coffee -- any type of idle shopping!

I found Hair K by accident. It's located right next to BQ Wings. One fateful day during lunch and in between lemon pepper wings, I decided that I'll give Hair K a try the next time I needed a trimming. Ever since my first clippings hit their well swept floor that sunny day, I've never looked back. What makes Hair-K so amazing? Well, one, Johnny and his wife, Sue, know how to cut and style hair. I'm Asian, my friend is Italian, my girlfriend is Hispanic, and her daughter is part Hispanic, part Guamanean. Johnny and Sue can work and style all of us til our hearts are content. Two, at $15 for a basic cut and shampoo, you just can't go wrong. Three, Johnny's a sports fan and is pretty easy to talk with. So, there you have it. For a nice, inexpensive haircut with good conversation on the side, visit Hair-K. And pick up some BQ Wings afterwards. They also have a delicious sushi place, Cafe Japan, that recently opened up. So...This is my Go-To salon in the Duluth area, primarily because of convenience. Also, the pricing…read moreis very reasonable! However, I'm getting to the point that I may try to find another salon. Why?? For starters, the general attitude here is not good. Service is not a thing here, and unlike most salons, stylists (I've tried 3 different ones so far) are just not that personable. In fact, one of the three stylists I've tried here cancelled on me not once, but twice!! Obviously, I stopped booking with her. I also sense that they're not even that happy being there. I could be wrong, but it's the feeling that you get from these stylists. Still, the general hair cutting has been good...though, in my case, it's pretty basic. Just a straight line! I've always tipped 20%...but I'm starting to rethink this, given how the service is so minimal. On my last 2 sessions, the stylist barely said "Hi" to me. The place itself is pretty cool looking (in a grungy kinda way?), but I feel that the place may not be clean as it should be. I could be wrong here, but I've seen dust on their surface and arty structures. Also, I really don't like how they blow dry and comb your hair with their fingers. Not just a little bit while blow drying...but all throughout! It just feels a bit gross. I mean, who knows how clean their fingers are! I also hate the way they wash your hair. They actually have a separate girl that wash your hair (instead of the stylists)...and this girl is just not good! She has zero strength in her fingers...and I hate the way she even touches your hair! Possibly THE worst hair washing experience (experiences) I've ever had in ANY salon. I can't believe someone that's actually hired for this job (hair washing) does such a poor job! Despite liking the location and pricing, service and overall quality is always an issue.
