I don't typically have a problem driving to an industrial area for a high end restaurant but only if the experience wows me. I did not feel I had such a knock your socks off experience at the Great Falls Bistro. The ambiance was pleasant and welcoming although the main dining room was cold. Admittedly, the outside temperature was in the 20's but the restaurant was pretty cold and several of the guests in my party kept their coats on throughout the meal. Our waiter was very friendly and really tried hard to make the experience a great one. He had to check with the kitchen whether several menu items were available which I have no problem with but he had to check on at least 3 or 4 items. Soft drinks were ordered including a virgin pina colada for a young guest. The drink arrived and the kid spat out what he drank. The bar had mistakenly included rum in the drink despite no one having ordered any alcoholic drinks. For my entree, I ordered the 30 day aged rib steak on the bone, medium rare. The steak was tasty however it was closer to rare than medium rare. I did not complain because I don't mind steak on the rarer side but I was surprised given the hefty price of my meal. The vegetables de jour were cooked well but a bit cold. For dessert I ordered the pecan pie with bourbon infused whipped cream. The bourbon overpowered the whipped cream but was still enjoyable. Unfortunately, the pecan pie was slightly well done with a few of the pecans ever so slightly burnt. All in all, I had a decent experience and I am willing to give them another chance to wow me. I came here awhile ago with my friend and the overall experience wasn't the very best; But we decided to give it another chance last week...this is how it went: For appetizers, my friend and I had Brisket Sliders and Spring rolls; We found them to be very savory. We were served promptly. For our second course, we ordered a Dry Aged Steak and it was grilled to perfection ! My friend had a GFB Chopped Salad that she really enjoyed. The memorial service for my grandmother was one of those moments where you feel like there's a billion things to do but not enough time to do them but somehow they do get done, except eat. Great Falls Bistro filled that need and more, if you need another my aunt (Susan B) just posted recently. Being Filipino, food is one of those ways that we grieve. You gain a lot of weight during times of celebration and times of loss. The food that Great Falls provided did not disappoint. Great Falls' rolls...what a marriage of bread, olive oil and sun-dried tomatoes. If they didn't serve anything else yesterday afternoon and just kept those rolls coming, it would not have been a wasted day. I'm not a vegetable guy so I asked for more fries instead. Best...choice...ever. I loved the fries with my steak yesterday, the two complimented each other really well. The chocolate mousse parfait for desert was a special treat because not only was it good, but also reminded me of younger days. I thank Tomer and his team for being there for us. At GFB the spaciousness and well thought out design of the space is so impressive, no need to sit on top of your neighboring diners, nor shout to be heard. The servers were knowledgeable and courteous. The drinks were innovative original and not small! nice beer selection as well. The Menu is so refreshingly original! Interesting appetizers - we were a large group so we got to try more than a few, and they all shone! The waffle breaded chicken fingers and the brisket sliders are a must and the duck spring rolls are a treat! Most in our group ordered steaks for Mains all came out perfect temperature as ordered and while "Manhattan" priced, you certainly get what you paid for! The aged steaks were really done to perfection! Deserts were a whole other level.....again the originality makes dessert a challenge for those trying to diet! the peanut butter explosion should be the only thing on there ...but then the cinnamon bun and the salted caramel tart omg! I brought my parents for a special meal on a Sunday evening. We made a reservation for 6:30, got there ten minutes early and were sat down immediately. Our orders were taken pretty quickly. We received our appetizers, which were very expensive and only okay. The only ones that were good were the pre-prepared ones, like the oxtail (though the gnocchi that came with it was really bad). However, once we were done with our appetizers, we did not receive our mains for nearly two hours. The waiter did come over to apologize three times and each time said our order was fired and should be ready soon each time. We asked if they could bring out some bread for the table in the meantime, and they brought out old, stale, likely frozen rolls. They were barely edible. When we did get our food, the rare duck breast that I had ordered was well done. Furthermore, half the breast was missing...probably went into their eggrolls. My father's chicken was so hard it had to be cut with a steak knife, and my the red snapper had so much salt on it that it made the tender fish inedible. The rice served with it was mushy. My girlfriend ordered sliders (image attached), which are actually offered as an appetizer and they were nice enough to give us two extra to make it a main. Although they were most definitely not as nice as other pictures I've seen of this dish, they were okay. The brisket in them was actually pretty tasty. This really went badly when I called over the waiter to let him know that my duck was overcooked and asked him to take it back. I'd already lost my appetite after waiting two hours for overcooked food, and asked that they just take it back, and that I would instead eat from the other plates at the table. The waiter went over and talked to the manager, who came to our table. He apologized and asked if I'd like to order anything off the menu. I told him I wasn't interested. He was soon joined by the owner, who incredulously asked if I'd ordered *rare* duck. I told him that ordering duck rare is very common, and if they offer it on the menu they should know how to prepare it. The owner argued that the duck looked rare to him. As I explained to him, the duck was not rare at all. The chef had rendered the fat cap of the duck breast, and the way they butchered their duck breast left a disproportionate amount of duck fat to meat. As a result, the thin slab of duck meat should have been seared gently for 30 seconds max, which clearly wasn't done because the meat was both gray and rubbery. I would have taken a picture, but I had told the waiter to take it off as soon as I got it. I did offer to have the owner bring the duck breast back to show him, but he wasn't interested and walked off. Mind you, this is a meal they were charging over $200 for. Their only redeeming quality was the waiter. The owner is a clown with too much money to spend and no culinary or service understanding. The manager, while apologetic, had no idea how to handle confrontation and wouldn't actually admit to any fault, only apologized for our "disappointing experience". We did get free dessert though, and 20% off our bill, but at that point, I really wasn't interested. For a meal in that price range, I did not expect to have to go home and cook my own food to have a proper dinner. If you want to have a high-quality steak meal, avoid the $200+ cost of this establishment and make your own dinner at home. read more

We sat down at our table to dirty glasses and cutlery. The menus are old, dirty and have dried food caked all over them. The food was billed as elegant, and was priced quite high, however, it really disappointed and was not tasty. Several of our appetizers were not even touched because they were not edible. We asked to not be charged for the inedible dishes, but the owner just offered to wrap them up and send them home with us and charged us full price. While the atmosphere was nice, and the service was good, the food is expensive, greasy and not worth the price. A year earlier we came here to try it out. We were disappointed then, but because they were new, we gave feedback and they asked us to give them another try. Sadly, we returned, spent hundreds on dinner, but the food was just not good. I've gone with my wife several times to GFB, and the food is decent, but one thing remains consistent: the service is horrible. The waitstaff spend most of their time chatting with each other rather than ensuring the guests are getting their money's worth. I once complained to the manager and all I got in return was, "oh, so sorry." Tonight was worse than ever. We waited for ALMOST AN HOUR to receive our appetizers. The excuse was that there was a private party and the kitchen was overwhelmed. Uhm, if you can't handle the heat, get outta the kitchen? Lame. And when the appetizers finally arrived, my wife told me part of hers was cold! Are you kidding? If it wasn't our anniversary I honestly would've just walked out. What an awesome restaurant!!! Arranging funeral services is challenging enough; but trying to make reservations for my mom's repast on a Monday early afternoon was so frustrating ...restaurants are either closed on Mondays or open in the later afternoon. When Tomer heard my plight, he was so accommodating and opened the Bistro for my family's needs. When we arrived, we were greeted by the Bistro's super friendly and efficient staff. The restaurant, located in a renovated factory, offered a contemporary chic atmosphere...And the food was amazing!! Went for our anniversary. Service was beyond slow (close to an hour wait for our food), my food went to another table, the diners at that table touched the plate because they couldn't figure out why it came to them. The staff then took it away from them, after we asked if perhaps it was ours, and gave it straight to us. They wanted to leave my husbands food so he could eat while I waited. When we asked for them to remake our food we were told they have to ask the manager. No manager around. About 10 minutes later they came back out with the same plates. Heard about this thru Zev Brenner a few months ago, checked it out online and through all important "word of mouth" and based on what turned out to be unanimously positive feedback made a mental note to check it out in person the next time our travels took us near the Passaic area...which as it turns out, was tonight...as we were in a carnivorous mood we opted for the 32oz, bone-in, 30 day, dry-aged Rib Steak (yes it's for two!) with a double whammy of shoe string fries...to assuage the guilt, we opted for salads rather than the way more tempting stuff listed under "tapas"...aside from our salads being actually dressed instead of drenched in their respective dressings (makes you wonder if the usual "over dressing to the point of drenching" is a "tznius" thing?), another thing we found refreshing was the fact that GFB is one of the new breed of kosher up(per)scale restaurants that don't feel compelled to augment(or in some cases 'cover up') their menu items with sushi... understand we like raw fish and rice as much as the next person(or cat), but enough already...it's perfectly ok to offer turf without the surf...especially if you do serve up "turf" the way GFB does... with apologies to Linda Richman our steak was "like buttah"(ok really good parve margarine), we went for medium which on a cut of that size is sometimes a challenge that many establishments tend to address by erring on the side of rare...the logic being it's way easier to go from rare to medium...clearly GFB is about getting it right the first time because our steak came to us so magnificently medium all we felt compelled to send back were compliments...juicy with flavor not fat, soft to the point where the serious serrated steak knife, that comes standard was overkill, fact, is a halfway decent butter knife could go through these steaks like, you know the rest..."mediumed" to perfection...if you haven't guessed yet, this was one awesome cut made more awesome by the flawless preparation...our double whammy of fries btw were equally impressive...why am I taking the time to give the fries a "shout out"? Simple...because many eateries on GFB's level tend to focus their formidable mojo on their entrees whilst leaving the lesser stuff like the 'lowly' shoestring fry 'side', to fend for itself. All it took was a fry or two to realize that GFB is as serious about their sides as their entrees...these fries tasted like they were supposed to...as in made from fresh potatoes not frozen...and more importantly, made to order...as opposed to being made in bulk earlier in the day then living out their day(or sometimes even days) under a warming lamp. Bottom line? When it comes to delivering great dining--and an experience to match--GFB quite simply gets it. No froufrou decor or staff with an over the top attitude, the general design vibe is boutique meat packing district meets industrial cool + the staff beyond helpful and responsive/attentive yet never cloying or condescending. You immediately sense they're there to ensure that the part of your dining experience that DOESN'T take place with a knife & fork is as impressive as the part that DOES. Bottom line? While the place wasn't full (it was 7pm on "Visiting Day Sunday", it was "jumping"--we recognized people there from Livingston, Highland Park, Englewood, Bergenfield...this in addition to seeing some fellow Monsey residents--and what we assume was a smattering of Passaic/Clifton locals...hardly a bad turnout for a Sunday in July in Passaic. As a member of the tribe, I will now exercise my inalienable right to kvetch (just a bit tho)...yes our entrees, salad appetizers & service were all first class, but they set a standard that the bread and dessert selections didn't live up to. While the rolls that preceded our meal weren't stale, they were pretty much bland and nowhere near as inspired as the rest of our dinner. Additionally, meals of this calibre, tend to leave one's sweet tooth in need of "gratification"--but that's assuming there's something there that'll properly "captivate it". Fact is, their dessert lineup was "competent" the "same old same old" standards we've come to know and love...and as it's been a while with the "molten this" and "flourless that" eventually leave...without adding a dessert or two to our tab If everything else wasn't so impressive, the "mehness" of the dessert selections could be overlooked...if not almost expected...but with everything else being so "worth the trip", one wishes they'd take a page or two from the dessert menu playbook of places like The Loft and Bison & Burbon both of whom augment the "standards" on their dessert menus with some deftly crafted ringers--basically, the kind of culinary/confectionary thinking that's definitely GFB worthy. Then again, after splitting 32 ounces of awesomely aged, prime beef (not to mention the aforementioned salad & shoestring fries) NOT being (overly) tempted by dessert could very well be a good thing. read more

Went there New Years Eve service was horrible! Took them 30 minutes to sit us with reservation! We than placed our order bottle of Wine appetizers and entrees 4 of us! The wine took 45 minutes and that is after I went to look for the owner! Another hour and half for Dinner to come together with only one appetizer and food barley warm! When I tried complaining to the owner and Manager about their service they said everyone here is in same situation that you are in! Really they were under staffed bar tender had no clue what to do and that is your answer of how you operate! Sorry I am not paying $60.00 for a steak with this kind of service! We went last night for New Years Eve dinner. The decor is very nice and the food is good. However the service was subpar. It took over 20 minutes for a waiter to come over, greet us and take our drink order. We ordered the beef carpaccio for a starter which was excellent. My husband was then served his entree, a steak. My entree, the duck breast, was not brought out until almost 30 minutes later. Our waiter initially advised that it would be out in 10-15 minutes. When 15 minutes passed I approached the manager who advised that there was a mix-up with the way the waiter placed the order, and the food would be out shortly. 15 minutes later it was finally served. This is simply poor service. Not once did the Waiter or the manager try to compensate - maybe a complimentary refill of our drinks or a dessert? Nothing! In a nutshell -- avoid this place. Our group of friends goes out regularly. We don't mind spending money on good food, but hate spending it on bad food7. Unfortunately this was mediocre at best, and very expensive. The space is very cool. Tables are actually desks pushed together, so plenty of room, and no worries about anyone kicking you. Unfortunately, when we arrived, glassware was dirty, and so was some cutlery later in the meal. Out waiter was very nice, but unfamiliar with the menu. He couldn't answer questions. Appetizers weren't bad, but they were served lukewarm. For entrees, the steaks were warmer, and cooked as requested, but had no seasoning at all. The haricots, vert, similarly, tasted like they were microwaved in the bag they came in, with no seasonings added, then placed in a dish. Chocolate souffle dessert was stone cold; our waiter said he'd never eaten a souffle, was it supposed to be warm? The manager or owner did come over at one point, and we voiced our concerns. He apologized vaguely, but that was it. All told, we had 5 small appetizers (one person had an appetizer as an entree), 2 entrees, 1 cocktail and 2 desserts. All ranging from mediocre to OK. The loft is very trendy, service was both professional and friendly, the manager solicitous, tapas presentation and flavor profiles incredible. I would have never thought to come here as I do not keep kosher but ended up here as part of a group outing. The strip mall the restaurant is in looks pretty much abandoned, and I am not sure if it was a large factory prior. Anyway, the restaurant is pretty huge and I love the overall look and feel. Industrial with the original factory wood floors and exposed brick. Very open and with a large bar against one of the walls. The food is decent but way overpriced in my mind. As part of the group situation we got a pre-fixe menu with salad, chicken/fish/steak option and mousse dessert. The salad was a salad...I have yet to be blown away by mixed greens. Dressing was decent. The steak was...good. Again, being that it's kosher, and you ask for medium rare, it's crazy to have a dry plate as you cut into it. It was juicy still but didn't have that steakhouse taste with the sear and caramelization. The more well done steaks had the cross-sear marks on them which looked nice but I had to sprinkle a bit of salt for the flavor. With a steak running at $57 a pop that is a cardinal sin. The mouse is parve which means dairy free. It was very rich which in the end gave me a bit of a rumble in the belly. For the kosher folks I guess this is a good outing but not somewhere I would go again. read more

Came there with a family. Ordered some meat dishes -- only to discover that the served meat was rotten -- it reeked of aged meat that was put and baked into bread and what not. All of us had food poisoning. We called the manager -- and he apologized for the incident, but didn't even offer to waive the charges for the dish. My wife and I live in Passaic and we wanted to go out for our 13th wedding anniversary. We used to go to Abigael's a lot, but going into Manhattan has become really annoying since we have grown so old and decrepit (late 30s :) Anyway, we normally head to Teaneck for Estihana (they have fabulously great steaks!) or Etc. Steakhouse (also really, really great) but we decided to try out Great Falls Bistro after hearing some good reviews from our neighbor (although we can barely find advertisements for them anywhere -- weird). We got there at 6:45 in time for our reservation and the restaurant was virtually empty, although there was some big bash going on in the adjacent party hall. The place is definitely wacky and whether you'll like it or not will depend on your taste for location. It's in a wacky part of town, and when they say it's a factory, they mean it's a factory. It looks like they're going to film a police drug bust hostage situation next door, and when you walk in, all the servers are dressed no neatly and the ambiance is definitely something right out of trendy, retro, hipster Brooklyn. I really thought it was very different from anything I've ever seen. We were immediately seated and attended to by Brian, our star server for the evening! He looked like a contemporary Manhattan meter maid because he had this device strapped to his palm to enter our orders -- I thought he might just give us a ticket. He was really nice and made recommendations; and he didn't just say that everything was awesome -- he gave us the secret VIP low down on what people like and what's the best and what to avoid because it's either not popular or not a fan favorite. I immediately informed him that I had checked them out online and found some of the most polarizing reviews -- as you can see above and below, some people really thought the place was great while others thought it was absolutely terrible. He acknowledged that, and said that one of the worst reviews was actually his customer from the previous week or so and that he knew about it, unfortunately. I thought that was pretty honest and sincere. He got 5 points for that in my book. Brian recommended about 5 of the 10 appetizers, and we went for the oxtail gnocchi and the pastrami-wrapped filet mignon. Similar to some of the other reviews, I did find them very bland. Presentation was super fabulous and they did come out in like 7 minutes, but the filet was bathing in some wine sauce which I didn't care for at all (disclaimer -- I don't like the taste or smell of alcohol) and my wife's gnocchi was just OK (although hardly any oxtail -- but hey, it's oxtail gnocchi, not gnocchi oxtail, right?) I could tell where the other reviewers had gotten their perceptions from. So that was a strike out. I did tell Brian about this, and he did remark that it was very popular, but that he'd definitely take our comments to the owner and chef. But maybe it's just me and my dislike of wine sauce. Then we got the 32 oz. dry-aged rib-eye steak for 2 -- basically a double to triple thick slice of meat, and it comes out pre-sliced, and of course we ordered it as the chef recommends, which was medium (if you order it any other way than what the chef recommends, I sense you are responsible for your own bad choice). It came out topped with some form of thin, light onion rings, which were really great -- crisp and yet not oily. It came with a side, and we chose the shoestring fried, which were salted and peppered to perfection! The dish came with 5 dips: ketchup, wine sauce (same as what the filet had been swimming in), some fancy BBQ sauce, hollandaise and bernaise. We both skipped over the ketchup and the wine sauce completely, and the BBQ sauce was very interesting, although it seemed like there was a bourbon or something mixed in, and rather than being just a hint, it was sort of heavy -- so again, we didn't like it, although maybe that was just me. My wife is not a drinker, although she enjoys some wine, and she didn't care for either the wine sauce or the BBQ sauce, although she did remark about the kick it gave for the one or two fries she dipped in it. Wow -- was that some steak! Really, really fabulous. You've gotta determine whether you like your steak in the first 3 bites or so, because after that, the tongue sort of habituates to the taste and even if it's fabulous, I find that it becomes rote (just as it does everywhere else I've ever eaten -- Estihana, Wolf & Lamb, ETC, Smokey Joe's, Abigael's, La Marais, La Carne Grill...). And it was sort of a new experience, because I've never had such a thick steak before. I tried both the hollandaise and the bernaise and found the hollandaise to be far superior, while my wife enjoyed the bernaise much more. We even brought home 2/5 of the steak because it was too much -- but not too much for dessert, of course! We got the PB dish (great) and the tip was calculated pre-tax, which I thought was honest. My wife and I really enjoyed our meal here. Meat was very tender and flavorful. I would say service was excellent but the restaurant was nearly empty because it's right before another Jewish holiday so I don't really have impression of what happens when it's busy (we were served quickly and our food came out very fast) . Space is huge and quite interesting. I was expecting small portions like most upscale restaurants and was surprised at the large quantity of food we got. My wife and I could have probably split a main. Prices were better here than you find in the city or even Teaneck for similar dining experience I am taking one star off for the tap water. Typically, I am fine drinking tap water but the water here was bad tasting even for Jersey standards; we splurged on the Paligrino. I've already been there several times, which speaks for itself ( - ; Love the waffle chicken and BBQ brisket sliders. Desserts are AMAZING, and the cocktails yummy and interesting. Definitely recommend (esp if you're kosher! Nothing else like it out there...) read more

Oh where do I begin to describe the worst restaurant experience of my life. New Years Eve....the restaurant had no clue what they were doing. Got there at 8:30, prompt orders of drinks and food items were taken and then the wait began.....and we waited and waited....others at other tables waited as well....a busboy came and gave us water and we asked, do you know where are drinks are? The answer was "to be honest, I have no idea where they are" and walked away. Then finally after an hour, the appetizers were brought but only two of them, the third which was the red snapper ceviche did not arrive, waited 10 more minutes and then the waiter came around and brought two drinks (forgot the third) and then we asked about the ceviche and the waiter went to get it. He brought it out and the fish was nice and warm, BECAUSE IT HAD BEEN SITTING OUT FOR AN HOUR! Mains had not arrived yet and at this point bedlam was occurring in the restaurant, it seemed as if every table had someone walking over to the owner and complaining. Another hour passed and we were beyond angry and hungry...the waiter was literally cowering in the corner and would not venture anywhere near our or the other tables he was serving. We were about ready to leave when at 10:45, our food arrived! Tasted my dish which was the pan seared duck and it was awful. The other person at our table who ordered the same thing had the exact same reaction. The duck was awful. We called for the owner and he came over and he was rendered speechless. He said he didn't know what to say but could he get us anything else? We answered no because we didn't want to wait another 2.5 hours for food. Asked for the checks and it didn't come for another 20 minutes and thankfully they had removed the duck from the bill. At that point by the way, half the restaurant had cleared out. I had heard good things before tonight but frankly, I would venture to bet that the homeless man we passed on the way home ate better than us tonight. (Sorry to be mean about this) By far, this was absolutely the most horrific experience I've had at a restaurant in my life. They better get there act together. I for one am done with this place and would give a big NO to anyone who asks about this restaurant. read more
