Hot cinnamon rolls on a Saturday morning? Count me in. Count those calories in too, but damn so worth it! The perfect amount of icing on top without going overboard, so soft, gooey and huge portion. The chocolate chip cookies are made with whole wheat with little drops of delicious chocolate chips...also a portion size that can be for 2 people. My absolute favorite is the coconut dessert bread. Now if you love coconut, you'll love this soft, melt in your mouth goodness. I think this location only sells it on Fridays so be sure to get it then! Challah bread is great with anything, just throw some butter on and there ya go! Prices are fair, not expensive like you'd probably think. Five stars without question because you cannot get a better loaf of bread anywhere else in NOVA. When you walk in, you get a taster of one of the four to six different types of bread they have for the day. Not a thin slice, a massive fill-your-belly slice. Naturally, they have great butters and spreads to put on the bread if you wish. Their menu rotates enough to give you many varieties throughout the week and I litterally have to fight myself from going in there every time I pass by. Is there a better smell than fresh bread baking? They have cookies, scones, and numerous other snack types of bread that are equally delicious. Okay, here goes a bread review from a glu-tard: We were putting on a tea party for some friends, and a few guests, including myself are gluten intolerant (glu-tarded) and would not be able to enjoy the traditional English tea sandwiches and pastries we'd prepared. So I googled gluten-free bread, not wanting to just go to Whole Paycheck and lose $20 on 4 muffins and a loaf of gluten-free bread. I was really surprised that a dedicated bakery would have daily gluten-free selections on loafs and muffins, but I was glad to see that Great Harvest Bread Co does just that! I headed over and snagged both items and a spare blueberry muffin to have for breakfast as a test drive. I thought the muffin was yummy if a little chewy, which can happen with the gluten-free flours. The bread was delicious though, cut smoothly, didn't crumble, wasn't overly dense and dry. I was able to make myself and glu-tarded cohort a great little plate of tea sandwiches and not feel left out. Great Harvest has one other location in Lorton and apparently hits some local farmer's markets, so keep an eye out if you need gluten-free baked goods! Note: for those with more serious issues like Celiac's Disease, make sure you talk to to GHBCo about their kitchen, because I'm not sure that cross-contamination is completely eliminated if they are using the same equipment. read more

Best. Bread. Ever. They are really generous with the free samples. They have sandwiches now and they are LEGIT. The cookies and baked goods are to die for. I've even tried some of their mixes (brownie, oatmeal, corn bread) and they are really good. Some of the breads have some really healthy grains, nuts, and seeds in them so you can make sandwiches with a bit more nutritional value. Not gonna lie though, I eat those unhealthy breads too (cheese bread, dessert bread... yummmmmm). The people are always really nice too. One teeny tiny complaint: You can't just walk in at any time and have anything you want. You can only get certain breads on certain days and sometime if you go too early a particular bread may not be ready yet. Or late in the day they may be out. I really like this small suburbia shop as it saves in me in times of need. Where Great Harvest is located there really are not many options for fast breakfast food (not from a fast food chain). I went in on a Saturday morning and asked for 4 breakfast paninis. They were kind, quick to take my order, and also friendly, and offered free samples from their bread board. It did take them what felt like an hour to make the 4 paninis but I saw that they were training an employee while preparing mine and I decided to be patient about it. I know they are hiring and so they will have a lot of training to do, and we have to let them do that as consumers. My friends and I thought the paninis were delicious. Although it is not my first time at GHB Co. it was my first time trying anything other than bread and it was pleasant enough compared to the options in that shopping center and then one across. read more

Very pleasant experience! I went in on Friday around 7am to pick up some scones. Cashier guy was nice and helpful in the selection of the scones. I got the cinnamon ones--some of the softest and most delicious scones I have ever had! There are other varieties of items such as dry soup mixes and maple syrup that would make for nice gifts. Great tasting bread-I tried the Jalapeño Cheddar and the basil pesto. Both amazing and fresh. They mill their own flour in store so that's pretty cool. They usually have an assortment of breads that you can sample -very generous sample sizes. I got a sandwich and panini too-southwestern chipotle and the chicken salad sandwich. The chicken salad sandwich is something that I would not order normally (because of the mayo) but it was recommended by one of the employees and to my surprise the mayo/flavoring proportions were perfect. So, I have been going to GHB since I was in California, because I love their bread and other products. This location is not just the worst GHB, but one of the worst businesses I have ever been in. It is not that their bread is terrible (it sure is not as good as the bread in other locations) but the service is just appallingly bad. Since I moved to the area and changed from the Lorton to the Burke GHB, I have always gotten the almost ire feeling that something is wrong with the people running this business. They have just made me uncomfortable, and until yesterday, I thought it was just me, and that not everyone is an excellent customer service person, like the Lorton owner/managers are. Anyway, I walk in with my 2 year old, and as always, nobody is behind the counter, while several customers are in front of it. A voice from somewhere in the back yells frantically "I am here, I am here, welcome to GHB, I'll be there in a second!"...I swear, I heard that three times, since I walked in...I wanted to yell back "OK, lady, just chillax,we got it...you are here...btw, what are you doing back there? I hope you wash your hands before you hand us the bread"...But I didn't. (Related side note: Read Carol s.'s review further down). A few minutes later 2 people show up, both covered in flower and other stuff, and help everybody in front of me. By the way, nobody is offered a free sample of something. They rarely do that in this location. This last time they had a few samples next to the register, none labeled, just sitting there. My turn comes and I tell the lady in the camouflage attire, backpack and all: "I would like to get the honey-wheat loaf please. And, is there any way we could slice it up, but have the slices be on the thicker side?" Answers the frantic backpack lady "Hmm. no, only one size slides"...Really? That's strange. OK. "Could I then just have half the loaf sliced and the other half as is?" " Oh, no, I don't think we can do that?" "You can't? "No, but let me ask to make sure...[turns to big guy covered in flower next to her] Can we slice half the loaf? [he says "no"] ...No we can't" she tells me, as if I had not heard. Now I am starting to get a little frustrated. Here I am, having driven on the post-Jonas Burke roads, willing to drop $9 on a loaf of bread, and I can't get it f...in sliced? "May I ask why?" I ask the big guy, who selects to remain silent. Lady responds "I don't know, we just don't do that"..."But why? I insist "I am actually asking you, since you were the one to decide this" I tell the big guy. " Cause this loaf cannot be sliced" he says and he shows me the mini loaf (I think it was raisin bread or something"...I clarify that I wanted the big whole wheat loaf. "We don't have a price for half a loaf"...I clarify again, that I wanted the whole loaf, I just wanted half of it sliced, and in fact I explain why I would make such an extraordinary request: so that I can use some of it for sandwiches and the other half for something else! " So"... says the lady befuddled...and making sure her disbelief was obvious: "You want us to cut it in half, then slice one half and put them in two separate bags?" If it seems like this was taking long, it was!!! I tell her "Yes! I am not sure why this has to be made into such a big deal"...She goes, "Oh, no we are not making it a big deal" frantic voice coming back "just trying to understand what you want. I have never heard of that before" .."Really? You have never heard of someone wanting sliced bread?" "Not like that. It is not necessarily a normal request"...Now, I think my temperature must have been up to boiling point. I was not normal? I was not the one behind the counter dressed in a combat suit, covered in flower and stuff, rolling my eyes on someone because they want their bread sliced; Walking to the back of the room, where someone was I guess baking (then why are you two covered in flower?) laughing and bitching about me, while I was still there. Let me tell you what's not normal chick: Your business model. Your attitude. Your attire. My coming back again. It came back to me, that every time I had been in that place before, I had been treated with contempt. Once before I had asked if the bread was fresh and I was told defensively that they bake bread every single day. Then another day, Sunday, I went in to ask whether they had any bread that was fresh, and they had told me defensively that they do not bake bread on Sundays, cause "there is no point. They never smile, they never say thank you, they never offer free samples, unless you ask for them. They never respond to my daughter who is desperately trying to get their attention (telling them hi, and bye). So here's what I am telling them: Safeway bakes some pretty good bread too. I have loved great harvest since I was a young child. They would show up to the farmer's market selling loaves of bread. In the past couple years, they have opened a store and since then expanded from just baked goods to a plethora of sandwiches and drinks. I think all of that might be overkill? The vibe in the store feels less about bread and more about everything else. I would love to see the focus go back to what they do well: BREAD! Let me preface this review by saying I am a pretty dab hand at bread baking and usually make my own loaves. But yesterday was a busy day and I decided to pick up a loaf of bread for last night's dinner - grilled goat cheese sandwiches. I was really looking for a ciabatta and hoping against hope that they would have one. They didn't - and most of the girls working there didn't even know what ciabatta was. Only one was able to answer my question - she said they don't have a steam oven (which means they can't bake ciabatta). That's fine - no big. But please train the high school girls you hire to work at your bakery to at least know that there are other types of bread you don't carry, so that when a customer asks for it she doesn't get a "What's that?" in response. Most of the breads are sweet. I ended up with an asiago pesto loaf - $9 for something I could have made at home for substantially less. But it's good if you're in a pinch. Just moved to the area and was looking for some good local places around the neighborhood and came across this gem on yelp. It's a quaint little store that looks like it's locally owned. Ended up making pasta that evening and swung by there to get some fresh bread. Well... 1 old fashion white loaf, 1 honey wheat loaf, 1 Red, White , and Blue loaf, and tons of samples later for me and the kiddies.... WE ARE ALL FANS now... the stuff is just fresh and yummy...Waiting to try the coconut and only gave it a 4 star since we haven't tried any of the sandwiches yet. I like the product but the service is bad. Every time. I waited for a sandwich today, nobody in the back making bread or sandwiches, two ladies in the front that didn't even acknowledge that I was waiting. Another customer came in and left when he saw me waiting, then I left before being helped. They said nothing as I left. Tl;dr - The service is slow but the food was so good, I'm leaving earlier for work tomorrow. So...the service is horrible, but only because the procedures have never been polished. I was in the store twenty minutes for a single sandwich, and I was the only one in the store. She wasn't rude at all, and was actually very sweet, but she was not experienced on a kitchen line and it showed quickly after a second order was called in (Two more sandwiches, identical to mine). Watching her actions, everything was prepared very well, just not quickly. However, food forgives all. When I finally got my sandwich and left (now late for work) I was wishing I had gone across the plaza to the Dunkin' Donuts, and swore that unless the food was made by some sort of wizard, I wouldn't be back. Unwrapping my grilled ham, egg, and cheese, I was taken back, at the size of this sandwich. 1 part egg, 1 part cheese, two parts ham, on two thick slices of bread. The ham was real, as in not deli-style slurry held together with meat glue, and there was about 1/4 lbs on my sandwich. Then she put a spread on both pieces of bread that looked like, could it be?
